    Sarnia, ON

    11 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We were expecting a 10 or 11 hour drive from Eau Claire to Sarnia. Because we took a non-interstate route to avoid rush hour traffic and construction in Chicago, it took us a very long, tiring 15 hours. Construction and way too many pit stops for JS also contributed to the delay. We didn't arrive in Sarnia until 1 a.m. and were exhausted.Читать далее

    Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON

    12 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

A mere 5 hour drive and we arrived in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake. Our accommodation for the next 2 nights was at Graystone Bed & Breakfast. We enjoyed a beautiful home and gracious host who treated us like family. Dinner was at The Olde Angel Inn. The historic pub and Lake Erie pickerel dinner that I thoroughly enjoyed reminded us of Scotland :)Читать далее

    Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON

    13 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

It rained non-stop all day but that didn't dampen our spirits. We visited 7 wineries, mostly smaller operations that were unknown to us. We purchased 10 bottles of our favourites to take home and share with family and friends. A walk down Queen Street in Historic NOTL would have been more enjoyable on a sunny day but the flowers were still amazing. NOTL is definitely a very manicured tourist town.Читать далее

    Lévis, PQ

    14 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

It was another longer than expected drive today from NOTL to Levis, across the river from Quebec City. Google Maps predicted 9 hours but it took us 12 l/2 hours. To avoid the greater Toronto area, we took the recommended US route through northern New York. The Quebecois treated us well despite the fact that we were too tired to even attempt speaking any French.

This photo was taken at the Quebec/New Brunswick border, an area thick with forests.

    Fredericton, NB

    15 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Since we only had 600 km to drive today, we took our time and visited two touristy spots that the Visitor Centre recommended. The first was Grand Falls Gorge which took us too long to find and was disappointing in that it wasn't so grand. We enjoyed the next attraction located in Hartland....the longest covered bridge in North America. Although we left Quebec at 10 a.m., we didn't arrive in Fredericton until 7 p.m. There were many moose warning signs so I was happy to arrive before sunset.

Our first impression of Nouveau-Brunswick.....trees and more trees! There is very little development in this area of the province so we drove through miles and miles of thick forest. The forest continued right to the outskirts of the city.

    Fredericton, NB

    16 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Before leaving Fredericton we walked along the waterfront and historic downtown area....a nice city with a population of 85,000. There was a jazz and blues festival happening in the city so this explains why I had so much difficulty booking accommodation.Читать далее

    Cornwall (near Charlottetown)

    16 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Our journey today took us to Moncton, population 69,000. Not a very impressive city so we didn't spend much time there. We were surprised how small these Maritime cities are. Next stop was the coastal town of Shediac, the "Lobster Capital of the World". JS wasn't up to the messy challenge of eating a whole lobster but he did enjoy a seafood casserole with lobster. The friendliness of the locals stood out here. We then drove over the 12.9 km Confederation Bridge connecting NB to PEI, the longest in the world crossing ice-covered water.Читать далее

Our afternoon was spent leisurely exploring the eastern region of the island. Coastal towns, lighthouses, and potato fields were aplenty.

    Central Coastal Drive, PEI

    18 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

One drive....two coasts. We had a full day to explore both the north and south coast as well as the lush inland areas. We were blessed with a gorgeous day....the temperature was 29; the sun was shining; and there was a slight breeze by the ocean. We did a circular route and ended our tour with a beautiful sunset. We saw one red fox and hordes of mosquitoes at dusk. Just can't escape those nasty insects!

This is PEI National Park near Cavendish and the town of North Rustico, one of our favourites.

    18 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

North Rustico is a fishing village with a population of 850. Deep sea fishing, kayaking and biking was available to tourists. The most adventurous thing we did was a leisurely stroll!

    New Glasgow

    18 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Lunch time! Although this restaurant was a tourist attraction and catered to tour buses, the setting was beautiful and the food delicious. I had a bacon wrapped potato pie, one of their signature dishes.....and yes, I did eat all of the bacon! JS had a lobster croissant. I had a nice chat with the owner about birding and gardening and ended up buying two birdhouses that were on sale for 50% off (not the one in the photo).Читать далее

    Inland Fields, Farms and Forests

    18 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

A short ten minute drive inland and we were in rolling hills and more potato fields. Apparently potatoes grow very well in the iron rich red soil. This was also one of our favourite regions on the Island.Читать далее

    18 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    Iona, NS

    19 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today we said goodbye to lovely PEI and pointed the Highlander in the direction of Nova Scotia. Our initial reaction on entering NS was "Not more forests!", thinking of our long, forest-rich drive through NB. But as we veered off the TransCanada Highway towards Cape Breton Island, the scenery became more dramatic.

We spent the night in a small village called Iona, located on Bras D'Or Lake, Canada's largest in-land sea with a blend of both sea and lake water. Our guest house was situated on a hill overlooking the lake/sea. When we arrived there was a ceilidh happening in the adjacent bar. Although there were only two musicians, an elderly lady beside us began playing the spoons!

    Chéticamp, Cape Breton Island

    20 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Awoke to a cloudy, drizzly day. Our first stop was at a Farmer's Market in Mabou, home of the Rankin Family. The Market had the usual wares but in Cape Breton fashion there was also music by two guitarists. Next was a whisky tasting at Glenora Distillery, North America's first single malt whisky. An l/2 ounce tasting of a 10 and 15 year old cost JS $15. It was more expensive than Scotland! For those who care, JS reports that it tasted like a Speyside scotch.

Our home tonight is a beautiful, waterfront inn on the Cabot Trail.

    Hiking in the Highlands

    21 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

We did two hikes in the Park. The most popular one is the 7.5 km Skyline Trail, which is a well manicured trail that ends in a series of platforms overlooking the Cabot Trail. JS chose not to do the stairs and paid the price by getting multiple black fly bites on his bare legs. We also did the short 1 km Bog Trail which had the best display of the carnivorous Pitcher plant that we've ever seen.Читать далее

    Sydney, Cape Breton Island

    21 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

After a long day of hiking, driving and sightseeing, we arrived at our historic bed & breakfast around 8 pm. It was very nice but we both felt it was a bit too formal for us, especially since we were wind-blown and exhausted from our full day of activities on the Cabot Trail. We didn't get to see much of Sydney so the next morning we drove to the waterfront to see the giant violin and there just happened to be a cruise ship arriving in port.Читать далее

    Louisbourg, Cape Breton Island

    22 сентября 2015 г., Канада ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We started our day with a visit to the fortress Louisbourg, built by the French in the 1700's and besieged twice by the British. JS was intrigued by the basic, underground toilet. Since it was off-season and all the university students had returned to classes, not all the buildings were open and there were very few employees in period costume. It was probably a good thing because we were in and out in less than 2 hours and were able to head to our next destination, Halifax.Читать далее
