    Swooped from Winnipeg to Kelowna

    7. juni 2019, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

After several weeks of planning, Linda and I boarded our noon Swoop flight to Kelowna for an amazing return fare of $119. The flight was smooth but the three male flight attendants were obvious rookies so they were entertaining to watch. On arrival at the Kelowna Airport we picked up our rental car and were happy to be upgraded to a black, sporty Toyota Camry. Traffic was heavy and slow going through the city. Once we were on the highway we encountered wet flurries around Merritt on the Coquihalla and scattered rain showers for the first two hours. Our view of the beautiful Rocky Mountains was mainly shrouded by low cloud cover. The speed limit was 120 kmh and drivers exceeded that. When first responders whizzed by us I knew that someone had likely crashed. We made it to the Abbotsford Airport by 5:30 where we had arranged to pick up Nancy. After a quick border crossing we were on our way south, arriving at Oak Harbour on Whidby Island, WA at 8 pm. On our way to a late dinner Nancy and I had a very unpleasant encounter with a massive amount of up-chuck in the hotel hallway and reported it to the front desk clerk. It definitely spoiled our appetite for the Mexican meal we had for dinner :(. (On check-out the manager discounted our room by 50% which was a nice gesture.)Les mer

    Ferries & Oysters

    8. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We had an 11 am reservation on the ferry from Coupeville to Port Townsend, a short 30 minute ride. This route was recommended to us by another timeshare owner from the area in order to avoid the horrible traffic congestion around Seattle. I appreciated the suggestion as we thoroughly enjoyed the ferry experience with scenic views and an entertaining female choir that performed sea-themed songs, such as The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond. We followed the winding two-lane 101 with mostly waterfront views. Our picnic stop was at Potlatch State Park along the Hood Canal. It was an interesting lunch break because it is a popular spot for clam digging and oyster harvesting. We spoke to some of the locals that were working hard to find their next meal.Les mer

    Oregon at last

    8. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

I had to drive about an hour on the I-5 and was pleasantly surprised that traffic was light. We made a brief stop in historic Astoria to see barking sea lions and to refuel at $3.17 a gallon, the best price we’ve seen so far. Our Camry is getting great mileage as we’ve made it this far on one tank of gas! We arrived at our destination, Seaside, on the northern Oregon coast at about 7 pm....another long day. We weren’t too impressed with Seaside, a small resort city with a lot of touristy shops. The highly rated Italian restaurant that we chose for dinner had a 1 1/2 hour wait so we settled on Mo’s, “an Oregon landmark for 70 years”. The food was horrible but the oceanfront setting with a view of the sunset was nice.Les mer

    Cannon Beach Wowed Us!

    9. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ 🌫 14 °C

Now that we were finally at the ocean we could slow our pace and enjoy the moment. And there were many special moments today. We started at Cannon Beach which, in 2013, was named “one of the 100 most beautiful places in the world” by National Geographic and I can see why. We parked at Tolovana State Recreation Area for easy access to the beach, which was massive with light, fine sand. This is the home of Haystack Rock that rises 235 feet out of the sand and is a protected marine garden. We arrived at low tide and the tide pools were teeming with sea life. It was exciting to see all the colourful creatures even if we didn’t always know what we were looking at! There were several volunteers available to protect the area and answer any questions.Les mer

    Pacific Coast Scenic Byway 101

    9. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Next stop was at the Tillamook Creamery, a farmer-owned cooperative of 80 farmers. The Creamery offers self-guided tours and cheese samples. The place was packed with people and we consumed way too much delicious cheese. It was a good thing that they weren’t also offering ice cream samples! At Neahkahnie Mountain viewpoint we got our one and only photo of the three sisters. It was a beautiful but sad stop as a young college woman had recently fallen to her death here and there was a memorial placed by her grieving mother. We made a brief stop at Otter Rock lookout where we spotted several grey whales quite close to shore. Nancy is the best at spotting whale spouts initially and then it is easy for us to follow the pod. This was a perfect end to our day!Les mer

    Finally.....Newport

    9. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

It was a very long but satisfying day when we finally reached our destination, the Embarkadero Resort in Newport, just after 7 pm. We had a one bedroom timeshare condo that overlooked Yaquina Bay and was just a 5 minute drive to the ocean. It was nice to have a kitchen so that we could prepare our own meals. Two sisters often have difficulty deciding which restaurant they would like to have dinner at....and sometimes they have difficulty deciding what food they would like to prepare for dinner and what flavour of ice cream to buy! Sister #3 finds that it is best to just walk away. However, we did agree on buying fresh coho salmon from the Bayfront commercial fishery. At $27 it definitely was a splurge but the meal was oh so good.Les mer

    Yakhina Head Outstanding Natural Area

    10. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After a relaxing morning we drove about 10 minutes north to Yakhina Head. This really was an outstanding place. At 93 feet this is the location of Oregon’s tallest lighthouse which extends out from the coastline, one mile into the Pacific Ocean. We were fortunate to be there at low tide and once again were able to explore the fascinating tide pools (at least one of us did!). The beach is made of black balls of basalt rock, making it somewhat difficult to walk on. As well as the tidal pools, the views were spectacular and the Visitor Centre had lots of informative displays. Staff were also at the seashore with displays and were helpful with answering our questions.

As I am writing this, the two sisters are asleep but snoring loudly in unison. I’m hoping I packed a pair of industrial earplugs!

    Goodbye Seashore.....Hello Interior

    11. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We packed a lot into the short time we had at the seashore and now it was time to head east to Oregon’s interior. Our next destination was only 300+ km. We couldn’t resist making one stop enroute at a town called Sisters. It is an Old West town full of unique shops and cafes. The population is only 2000 but it is well known for it’s rodeo and quilt show where more than 1300 quilts are displayed outdoors in gardens. Our destination was the Sunriver Resort just 15 minutes south of Bend. Here we have another one bedroom unit that was more spacious with a woodsy decor.Les mer

    Volcanic Wonders

    12. juni 2019, Forente stater ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We quickly learned that there was a lot to do in this area as we were in the middle of Newberry National Volcanic Monument, a 55,000 acre National park. Our first stop today was a 2.5 km drive up a narrow, winding road to the top of Lava Butte, a 7000 year old cinder cone (which I learned was created by fragments of lava thrown out during eruptions). Linda and I walked the .5 km rim trail with panoramic views and it was HOT....sunny and 32!

To cool off, our next stop was the Lava River Cave where the temperature dropped to 5 celsius inside the cave. There is no artificial lighting in the cave so we had to rent large flashlights for $5 each to walk through the 1.6 km lava tube that was formed during Newberry Volcano’s eruption. The lava tube is about 58 feet x 50 feet at it’s largest point but deeper in the cave it drops to about 5 feet x 4 feet.. We had to walk down 126 steps at the entrance and climb over a jumble of volcanic rocks. The 2 wimpy sisters turned back at about the half-way point but I carried on to the end which had the most interesting features. It was a fascinating experience and far superior to the lava tube on the Big Island in Hawaii. We had our picnic lunch near the Visitor Centre where NASA astronauts trained to walk on the moon in the 1960’s. We’ve learned a lot today about volcanoes.

    More Volcanic Wonders

    12. juni 2019, Canada ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We were on a roll so we decided to drive 30 minutes south to the 4 mile x 5 mile caldera. We were all interested in hiking a short trail called the Big Obsidian Flow. After ascending some stairs we were surrounded by huge jagged boulders of black volcanic glass. It was unique and impressive. Once we reached snow on the trail at about the 1 km mark we decided we had enough and turned back. While in this area we visited 80 foot Paulina Falls which was a very short walk through the forest to the upper Falls. It was another full day of exploration and such a contrast to the ocean setting just yesterday.Les mer
