The Anzac Museum in Beersheba is a great memorial place for Aussie and New Zealanders. It has a theatre that is also a lift which when the movie finishes opens to a viewing platform over the cemetry. It was a quite moving and sad experience to visit.Читать далее

Israel -Road to the Gaza Strip

    17 апреля 2019 г., Израиль ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We went from Beersheba up close to the Gaza Border. The land here is cultivated even though it's poor with little rainfall. The Israeli's have developed technology where they treat waste water and recycle it water this area. Along with drip feeders and hot houses this area brings forth abundantly. The desert shall blossom as a rose!
On the other side of the border....
The Palestinian continually burn Garbage at the border which they hope annoys the Israeli's but none live close enough for it to bother them.
The Israeli's have a blimp in the air which constantly monitors the border and picks up any suspicious activity.

Beersheba - on the border of the desert.
It's a oasis in the desert and is being rebuilt and improved at a rapid rate thanks to its forward planning Mayor! The earth is made up of dust from Sahara Desert that falls when it reaches moisture. Also limestone dust that causes flash flooding that causes big ruts in ground and makes it useless for agriculture. Neverless, the Israeli's have cultivated this land and the plains lining the roads abound with crops if all sorts.

    17 апреля 2019 г., Израиль ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

There is a Anzac Memorial structure up near the Gaza Border to Commemorate the Aussie and New Zealand contribution to the wars in the Gaza area and the lives lost in the campaigns.
The guide's talk was overshadowed by a flock of sheep that wandered around our group as if on cue. It is very Outback Australian type landscape - even with gum trees!Читать далее

    19 апреля 2019 г., Израиль ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

The Friends of Zion Museum is so inspiring with fabulous interactive displays. It is about the 'Christian Zionist' movement and individuals who gave their lives, money and time to support the Jews and create a homeland for them.
Great gift shop with goods made by new immigrants to the country - save your souvenir shopping to buy here and support this worthy cause that continues to help Holocaust survivors, and new arrivals and their families .
We signed up as "Friends of Zion" and bought the book. Can't wait to read it!
Very moving and inspiring! Full of admiration for these brave people!

    Dead Sea

    20 апреля 2019 г., Палестина ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    436m below sea level.
Tamarisk and date trees tolerate the salt.
Donkeys are used to keep ground clear in the orchards.
Pot Ash extracted from the Dead Sea is the main export of Israel. They also extract Magnesium and Bromide from the water. The water feels oily, which is the magnesium.
Sinkholes develop when water recedes which make it dangerous to walk on due to sudden collapse.
The sea is really deep, the lighter aqua colour water are manmade and filled from a channel dug from main sea.
Very unusual place! Went for a bob in the sea - not quite our usual swim at the beach, but it's supposed to have great medicinal benefits!

    Engedi

    20 апреля 2019 г., Израиль ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Engedi is an oasis in the Judean desert. It's a wildlife sanctuary. Water springs high up in the mountains cause the water to rush down in waterfalls which are really refreshing. Saw some Ibex (mountain goats), Hyrax (guinea pig like critters) and some birds. Lots of caves around - where David hid from Saul.
The people of Engedi were famous for making "Balsamic Perfume" from a plant resin, but the recipe was kept secret.

    Masada

    20 апреля 2019 г., Израиль ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    Wow - what a place!
Herod built (well, lots of poor slaves did) a palace high up on this mountain fortress. It was his winter palace.
The Jews revolted from the Roman rule and fled here to escape.
The Romans were intent on quelling the rebellion and laid seige to the place to subdue them. The Jews were determined not to be under Roman rule again and when it became imminent that the Romans were about to break through the gates with their rammer the Jews made a plan to all commit suicide during the final night. When the Romans broke into the fortress they found only dead bodies.
How they built this place, it's water cistern, walls etc etc is astounding - what a feat!

Ben Gurion was Israel's Prime Minister. His office was in Tel Aviv but after visiting a new kibbutz set up in the Negev he joined it and lived there very modestly with his wife. He and his wife are buried in simple graves not far from their home that was known as 'The Shack'. The graves face a fantastic tavern with a fantastic view.Читать далее

    22 апреля 2019 г., Иордания ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Aqaba is Jordan's sea port on the Red Sea. Eliat in Israel is just across the water, Egypt just further down, and the Saudi border a little further down on the Aqaba side so this bit of water is shared by 4 countries. Jordan also shares a border with Lebanon and Syria.
The water was a beautiful blue and clear. It had a small pebbly sand bottom.

    Jordan - Wadi Rum

    22 апреля 2019 г., Иордания ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Desert wilderness in the mountains of Moab. Wadi (valley) Rum (high mountains). Amazing rock formations .
Got in the back of utes for an explore around.
    Went for a camel ride.
Ended up at a Beduion tourist spot where you can camp out in "glamping tents" and had traditional Beduion lunch of lamb, chicken, vegetables and rice cooked on coals under blankets.
The children of Israel wandered in the wilderness here before crossing the Jordan River.
    Great day!

    Jordan - Petra

    23 апреля 2019 г., Иордания ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Petra is one of the 7 Wonders of the World. It is a unique city of dwellings carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataeans and was an important junction for the silk and spice trade routes linking Asia, Arabia and Rome.
The ancient hidden part of Petra was rediscovered in 1812. It is a burial site and Hidden beyond a small crevice in the rocky mountain range is a spectacular series of tombs carved out of the rocks. There is also temples and churches of different eras. In more modern times people began living in these cave homes, but since the site became a World Heritage Site they have been relocated to the township outside the syc.
The site is a major tourist attraction and was full of hustle and bustle and shonky traders but it is all great fun.
We took a camel for part of the way back out . Some of the group took a donkey ride.
The Jordanians are really nice people!

    Machaerus

    24 апреля 2019 г., Иордания ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

Herod had a palace high in the hills overlooking the Dead Sea in
Machaerus. This was where he was entertaining when Salome danced for him and he offered her anything up to half of the Kingdom. She consulted with her mother and because she was discontent with John the Baptist for condemning her marriage to Herod she told daughter to ask for his head on a platter. As John was imprisoned there at the time Herod had no choice but to grant her wish and John was beheaded.Читать далее

    Mt Nebo

    24 апреля 2019 г., Иордания ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

The place where Moses was told to go to view the Promised Land. He died on the Mt, but his burial site is unknown.
You can see the Dead Sea, Jericho, Jerusalem and Amman. It was a bit hazy but you could make it out.
There is a memorial to Moses, a dipiction of the brazen serpent on the pole, and a church there.
The church has a well preserved mosiac floor depicting animals. It was deliberately covered with another mosaic to preserve it from the Iconistic movement that removed the faces of any statutes or mosaics during that time.

    25 апреля 2019 г., Австралия ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Amman is the largest city in Jordan.
It's a mix of rich, poor, Beduion, sheep pens, markets, top knot shopping malls, resorts etc.
All the housing must be faced with the white stone that is abundant in the area.
It's very clean, toilets spotless, and the people friendly and happy!
There are a lot of "guest workers" as it is polite way of calling refugees - so they do a lot of cheap manual work like cleaning.
Here is a little look at Amman life.

    Jordan River Baptism Site

    26 апреля 2019 г., Иордания ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

The Jordan River is the natural boundary separating Israel and Jordan.
Jordan boasts this spot as the place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. It fits in with the biblical account so it may have been this place.
The river is greatly reduced in water flow due to damming of the river and water being piped out at spots further up.
There was a church built here, and 4 other ones close by.
Had our Breaking of Bread meeting here.
