Day One - No show, just travel

Today was a long one. Our drive began at 5am heading to Lafayette, Indiana. On the way we went to Pit Boss BBQ in Atlanta. On the way we stopped in Louisville, Kentucky for dinner and found out everything closed at 9. Approximately 20 hours of driving got us here and now we get to sleep in and tomorrow drive to the Chicago area for our first show.Baca lagi

Day 2 - Gig at Fioras rained out

Today we made the drive to the Chicago area. We met up with Nick Moss who was letting us stay with him. We got to hear his band rehearsing with their new bassist Rodrigo. We then hit the road to Geneva to set up and met with our saxophonist for this tour, Tomas from Germany.

We set up and were told the weather looked perfect. They told us just in case we should set up their tent covering us. We sat down and ate dinner then began o play. Within the first song or so rain came down but lightly. After this we played another and Andrew had his bridge pop off the upright. By the next song we lost power in one amp and had to call it. As we were packing up a ton of water fell from the tent covering my back. Good times. First road show complete!

After we met back at Nick’s house for bratwurst and other sides. Mark Thompson met us. He told us stories and lots of jokes. Tomorrow we head out to St. Louis for my real first road gig. This one don’t count.Baca lagi

Day 3 - Blues City Deli

Today started out well. We said our goodbyes to the Moss family and headed out to find breakfast. Our choices were Jersey Mike’s Subs or McDonalds. So subs it was. Unfortunately we all realized too late that we were about to play at a deli, so why I get this?

Getting to St. Louis was super easy and uneventful. When we arrived the crew at the deli were incredibly awesome. I got the “Thunderbird” which I believe had pastrami, turkey, and possibly capicolla. Once the doors were opened it was super packed, and people even lined up outside to see us play. Frank showed up and Doug even called to him onstage and gave him a public thank you.

After the show we went back to Frank and Jenn’s house and I got to see Rocky. He was very excited to see me. So wasn’t the dog in the next yard; it made me sad as her owners left her out at night. After chatting for a minute we decided to order some Imo’s pizzas. I didn’t like them the first time around but for some reason I really liked it this time around. We stayed up for probably two hours chatting about random things and even played some guitars.

All in all a good day. Back to the Chicago area for the next gig!Baca lagi

Day 4 - The Bullpen

Last night we stayed with Frank and left early morning. Jenn made us muffins and coffee and I played with Rocky before having to say goodbye. We couldn’t leave right away as Doug lost the keys yet again. We then made our way to Panera Bread (St. Louis Bread Company in St. Louis) and got some food. On the way we stopped at a gas station and got some snacks. I got some Wisconsin cheese and beef stick combo.

We finally got to the hotel and then met with the maker of Vero amps who took us out to dinner at an Italian place called Pesciolino Osteria. I got some kind of chicken that was similar to chicken Parmesan but it had veggies. The appetizers were great; we had bruschetta and even though I hate tomatoes those ones were super good.

We then made our way to Shorewood for the gig. We were supposed to start at 8 but landed up showing up around that time. Vero’s owner was the dude who made the gig happen and insisted we go to dinner and just relax. The show was an absolute blast, which was somewhat surprising because it was a sports bar with lots of TVs. Everyone was super into it, most especially Jeff Burgos (in the group picture). Thomas played insanely good, Doug was on his game, and Andrew as always played killer.

The night ended with Andrew searching frantically for his iPod and then a buckle from his shoe. I got some late night soda and Fruit Loops from the lobby. Tomorrow we’re off to New Glarus, Wisconsin to play their big festival. The Jimmys open, then us, then we back up Bryan Lee. Super excited for that one!Baca lagi

Day 5 - New Glarus Blues Festival

Today we made our trek to New Glarus, Wisconsin. It was a very easy drive. On the way I found the new Albanese Sherbet gummy bears at a gas station. We arrived pretty early in New Glarus to see the Jimmys play. They were really awesome.

We got ten dollars apiece for the food trucks. I landed up getting a Bratwurst and what is called a Landjäger which is pretty much beef jerky. I then proceeded to get mustard on the very bottom of my shirt.

I set up my stuff and went on. It was super hot and I went through like five bottles of water. Thomas once again was outrageous and we all played hard to keep up with all the insanity ensuing onstage. Halfway through the set we found out Bryan Lee was sick and couldn’t play the show. This meant the Jimmys would join us for that set.

The set with the Jimmys was great. We played with their bassist Perry and organist/pianist Jimmy. They played tons of slow blues and upbeat swings. One tune was a rumba that went into a shuffle like “I Woke Up This Morning.” It felt like I was playing like Sonny Freeman.

After the show we went to Tofflers and got dinner. Thomas made one or two loud but hilarious disruptions. The food was just okay.

Tomorrow we’re off to Des Moines to do a double bill with the Bel-Airs. Apparently their drummer played with James Harman. It should be an awesome show and luckily it’s only about four hours away!Baca lagi

Day 6 - Noce with the Bel Airs

Today we went to Des Moines from New Glarus. I’ve never even stepped foot in Iowa so it was exciting. Going there we saw almost nothing for a few hours. In a small town we stopped at a place called Milio’s which we quickly discovered is exactly like Jimmy Johns. In fact it essentially was, being that it’s owned by Jimmys cousin.

We stayed with a friend of Doug’s who made us some smoked pork. We got to the gig early and loaded in (they actually had backline). We only had to place a 75 minute set which was great. The sound was iffy; the bass wasn’t very present and the guitar extremely present. This was good for anytime there wasn’t a guitar solo.

The guys in the Bel-Airs were really good. Mike had a sparse shuffle that was really nice feeling. They were incredibly nice guy and we chatted with them for a bit after the show. At the end they had us join them (except me...it’s hard to accommodate two drummers).

We went back to where we are staying andante more food. They made popcorn for us and Andrew and I ate it almost instantly. Tomorrow we head to Beloit, Wisconsin to play with Dave Potter (and hopefully Madison Slim).Baca lagi

Day 7 - Grand Avenue Pub with Dave Potte

We departed at around 10:30 to go from Des Moines to Beloit, Wisconsin. We looked for food and had to go to an Arby’s. Here we had a cashier who though Doug was spelled Dug. Oh well, no one is perfect.

We didn’t do much stopping or anything. The one noteworthy thing that happened was that we discovered we had two rooms at the hotel, but only two beds. So Doug had to spend about an hour fixing that situation.

The gig was really fun. Mark Thompson was there amongst other friends. Dave Potter also sounded great. A few songs in Madison Slim walked through the door. He was incredibly nice, and when he sat in I was elated by how great he sounded. I was incredibly honored to meet him and play with him. Stephen Dougherty also sat in on drums. He sounded super good and was a great conversationalist. He is probably the top blues drummer in Chicago.

Tomorrow we play in Ohio. It’s going to be about 8 hours of driving with a time change, not only that we won’t have time to stop anywhere before the gig. So it’s literally drive and play. It’ll be a long one!

Edit: during “I’m Ready” I believe it was Andrew and I did a big build up. Well, as I went to do the roll into the four chord I tossed my stick across the stage. I somehow hit a rim or something. Someone ran up and grabbed it and proceeded to dance with it.Baca lagi

Day 8 - Natalies Coal Fired Pizza

It was a super long drive today. I slept a good amount of it honestly. But what was great was we actually made good time and we were able to go to our Airbnb before the gig. It was expected we’d have to just go straight there.

Natalie’s was cool. Their pizza was great and they had a huge stage. What really made my night was once again seeing Thomas go up to the bar and go “I’d like a beer.” They even asked him what and he jut said whatever. Apparently Germany doesn’t have a huge selection!

Our set went well and we only had to play two hours. The last part of the set Sean Carney and Albino Red sat in on guitar and sax. Both really good. We ended the night by talking to people then headed home. We stopped at an ATM right by the percussion store I got my set from 9 years ago coincidentally. We then stopped at a gas station where the dude wouldn’t let me buy something because he thought Doug didn’t pay him the dime he owed. He later found the coin.

Back at home we had some Bavarian cream puffs and I made a huge mess. Andrew loved them, I thought they were good, Thomas said they sucked. More about our place...let’s just say we brought all of our equipment inside.

Tomorrow we have the day off so we’re off to the Hagans. They have a cottage on lake Eerie so we will be staying there. We will probably also get ribs at some place we saw that looked great. No more long drives for a few days!

Day 9 - Day off with the Hagans

Not a lot to report today. We left around eleven and got some okay BBQ in Columbus. We headed to Madison to see Doug and Andrew’s friends the Hagans. It was a short trip. They have a nice cabin on Lake Eerie. We spent some time chatting while Andrew and Thomas watched the soccer game. We had had some spaghetti and meatballs for dinner which was good. We then had Buster Bars, which blew Andrew and Thomas’ minds.

Right now I’m just hanging out in the room I’ll be sleeping in. You can see the sunset from the window. Tomorrow we play in Streetsboro which is very close by. That’s all for today.Baca lagi

Day 10 - Honky Tonk House Concert

Today I woke up later than I have been and hanged out with the Hagans for a little bit. We then drove about an hour to Streetsboro, Ohio where we found ourselves in a small neighborhood. We met our host Jay who had us set up in his basement which had about 9 chairs.

We sat around for about an hour until people showed up. There was about sixteen or so in all. It sounds like a small amount but it’s all the basement could hold! We played a pretty quiet couple of sets. Thomas did even more insane sax antics (some very suggestive) and Andrew even picked up the bass. It was a surprise he didn’t smash the ceiling or light.

After I was super thirsty. People had left and the host told us to have whatever we wanted. Well, they had absolutely no beverages except fifteen kinds of beer. So instead I ate a bunch of watermelon. Not really my favorite but oh well. We just say around for a bit eating and chatting.

Tomorrow we have another day off. We’re driving back to Nick Moss’ place. On Saturday we play two shows, Thomas’ last ones unfortunately. It’s all the soccer finals that day, so I’m sure that’ll be on in the van.

One last thing. Their cat decided to bunk with me. I’m also pretty sure Mom and Dad had this comforter in the past!Baca lagi

Day 11 - Day Off

Pretty uneventful day. We just left Ohio and went back to Elgin to Nick Moss’ house. We got stopped by the police at a speed trap. Apparently there were construction cones.

On our way we met up with Steve again who tweaked Doug’s amp and fixed Andrews. We then went back to dinner to that place we went last time with him. I got chicken Picatta and some weird flan sort of thing. The whipped cream was the best part.

On our way to Elgin we watched Coming to America. We got to Nicks sort of late and went to bed. Today we’re playing Madison WI and Milwaukee. We end at 3:30 and have to start the next one at 6:00. Keeping my fingers crossed. The gas is insanely expensive in Elgin by the way (3.25).Baca lagi

Day 12 pt. 1 - Red White and Blues

Today we left early from Nick Moss’ (that’s one of his dogs in the picture) to get to Madison. We had a 2:30 start at the Knuckledown which was hosting the Red, White, and Blues fest. Some of the guys from the Cashbox Kings were there plus the Jimmys. Everyone there was super nice and understanding that we had to play and leave quick. We had an 1.5 hot drive to Milwaukee to make a 6:00 show.Baca lagi

Day 12 pt. 2 - Barree

The 6:00 show went off without any issues. EWe made it and set up somewhat early luckily. Plus it was just a super fun gig. Madison Slim showed up and watched us but didn’t play. We made a lot of money in tips. I imagine the sax antics plus Andrew holding the bass over his head and me standing playing helped a little.

After the show we ate some food together and then the manager or chef believe booked us at a super weird place called the Chalet something or other. Before we got into our rooms we got some snacks (I got a local root beer and Smurf’s candies). You gotta love the pink tile in the bathroom.

Tomorrow we’re taking Thomas to the airport and then we head to Buffalo. 9 hour drive.

A funny quote form Andrew tonight: “Hey, day you thing in January that in June you’d be sleeping in Nick Moss’ basement?”Baca lagi

Day 13 - Long Drive

Not much to put here about this one. At around 11 or 12 we dropped Thomas off at the airport then headed to Buffalo. We were actually making good time but then got caught in dead stop traffic for about an hour or hour and a half. I slept through most of it.

They asked me to find lunch. I found a place called Jason’s Deli thinking it was a local deli. Nope, big chain. But they both loved it especially Doug who got a giant salad. Pastrami was okay but I prefer it cold.

We made a few rest stops but really just kept driving until around 11 or so. We stopped at a friend of Doug’s named Jerry i believe. He lives on a reservation right outside of Buffalo (he is not Native). He talked to Doug for like two hours while Andrew and I escaped to go to sleep.

Today we’re doing a gig in Buffalo and one tomorrow in Rochester. Should be fun!Baca lagi

Day 14 - Abbey Square

This was a nice day. Once again we stayed on Lake Eerie. I got some laundry done and just hung out. For breakfast we went to Millie’s and I got some potato pancakes. Big mistake. Regular ones are way better.

Doug and Andrew really wanted to go “throw Aerobie” so we did. It’s like a frisbee but with no middle so it flies super far. Andrew found a middle school with a football field and we went over. I sucked at throwing but eventually got okay at it. Catching, though, was another story. I caught it once one like 1.5 hours. I did get hit on the forearms pretty good with it, though!

We went back and Johnny our host made is hamburgers. I got to try some horseradish mustard only sold in Buffalo which was good. Then we headed to the gig. It was at a place that was almost English themed (kind of) on the inside. Like the trim looked European.

The gig went well. Lots of people visited wanting to sit in and because they knew the band Doug let them. One dude, a bass player, actually stopped playing thinking he was giving me a drum solo but everyone kept going and Doug got so lost even he stopped. Kind of a train wreck.

The gig ended and we looked for some kind of gas station for food. Instead we stumbled upon a rest stop with a McDonalds. You actually had to cross the entire highway on a big bridge to get to it. After got one of the “all beef patty quarter pounders” as he called it and nuggets. I just got nuggets and Doug begrudgingly got a salad which he later complained had sucky dressing and no croutons. Andrew really enjoyed his meal even though t didnt have bacon and he got honey mustard, not hot. He called the nuggets “fire.” Apparently the dude working there had never heard that term before.

We got in at 2 am knowing we had to be up at 7:30 or so. I immediately went to bed. Today we’re off to Rochester. We’re doing a radio show and then the gig at the Abilene. Tour getting close to being finished!Baca lagi

Day 15 - Abilene

Today we woke up super early and drove about 45 minutes to Rochester. We stopped first at a Tim Hortons and got some food. We arrived at the Abilene early and picked up the club owner to do a radio show. We were all interviewed on the show and played some tunes (Mama Didn’t Raise No Fool, Only Time Will Tell, and Saturday Night Fish Fry). We left and dropped the owner off.

To kill some time we tried to find a place to sit around. We went to some waterfall then tried to find a local Jason’s Deli. Apparently my phone didn’t know none existed and took us to a “Masons Deli.” We at some point went to a vintage guitar shop where Andrew got a 100 dollar parlour. I got a super cheap harmonica and a grip strengthener. The harmonica sucks.

We then went to eat at Dinosaur BBQ. It kind of sucked. But at least the cornbread was good. We finally hit up the club after going to a gas station and we loaded in. It was a really nice room but not super great turnout. We played our show and quickly packed up as we needed to get two hours away.

We drove and got some snacks and drove to a “Microtel” in Pennsylvania somewhere. I was absolutely exhausted and quickly took a bed. I come out of the bathroom and get in and Andrew claims he claimed it. Oh well 😂

Now we are heading to Richmond, VA to

Day 16 - Tin Pan

We got up super early as we had to drive like 9 hours. The drive was okay but we hit some brutal traffic on the 95 where Washington DC is. Took like an hour to get out of.

We got to the venue and talked to the Nick Moss guys and set up. Patrick on drums was super nice and let me use his pedal (Speed Cobra) and Rogers snare. He even offered to let me use his cymbals but I just used mine. His sounded super good though, especially the ride.

We all got our food (I got a stupid big wedge salad) and then we had to play at 7:45. We only had to do a 45 minute set so we did some short tunes and then Nick went. At the end of his set Andrew, Doug, and I all went up to play two tunes and close out the night. One was a fast jump and I was a little mind blown I kept up so well.

One thing I have to say is Nick is super awesome. During a tune he gave me a shout out and said I must e incredibly dedicated to drop my life in Maine just to play blues in Florida. He’s such a nice dude. Plus Taylor on keys and Rodrigo on bass makes for an insane band.

After the show we all chatted. Dennis, a dude who worked for Hohner, and I all talked harps and even briefly Brad Harrison. I could tell Dennis was surprised to hear that name after so long. We then went outside and I chatted with Patrick about drums. He was incredibly nice and told me “I don’t want to sound like a dick, but you back when I first saw you play and now? Totally different worlds.” He’s all class.

We then went to where we were staying. The lady was super nice and had a nice home. She actually wrote a book about blues and mental health (she’s a forensic psychologist). We stayed up and talked for a bit then went to bed. She also had a super nice dog. Big.

Today we have another seven hour drive. We’re going to Aiken, South Carolina. Luckily we stay in Carolina for the weekend for a festival.Baca lagi

Day 17 - The Red Pepper

Super long drive today. We did maybe 7 hours or so to get to Aiken. The town is pretty nice I must say, really laid back and just full on southern. We got to the room first and then headed to the gig. Ben was there to meet us (he helped secure the gig and then a room). We set up and instantly noticed the palmettos.

People really liked us here. There was a young dude named Zach with some friends and probably his girlfriend. E got a little drunk and didn’t want us to leave. He told me during chatting that his and I’s generation were so much different. He turned 22 that day.

It started pouring big time after the gig so we had to wait it out while I checked my cases for palmettos. I didn’t mention this before but I had a nice meal. Wagyu steak with fries. A tad overdone but great sauce.

One weird thing about this area is all the girls call you baby. I’ve never experienced that before. It’s very different culturally here. You can tell there are people who love the living and some who want out hard.

After the gig I got some snacks and Andrew got two quarter pounders, 6 nuggets, and a chocolate shake. Dude is inane.

Our next three gigs are in South Carolina so the long drives are over!Baca lagi

Day 18 - First of the Greenwood Dates

Before heading to Greenwood we went out to lunch with Ben to a Carolina bbq place. It was buffet style. The food was good but I didn’t really love the sauces. I’m a little sick of all this food no lies. They had something called hash which is just all the leftover meat parts stewed for a very long time then you pour it over rice. It was like mediocre creton. After we checked out his guitar collection and made our way to Greenwood.

The ride was very short and uneventful. Doug told us he had two rooms so one of us was getting our own room. He said he had three quarters with three different states. I picked West Virginia as the coin that should win. We all picked one and mine had Harpers Ferry. Good luck I guess! We got to the rooms and then headed to the gig.

We arrived super early at the Inn on the Square where we played their ballroom. We got free food and I picked the filet mignon. We played two sets. During the end of the first one I was super sure I had seen Adam Gussow in the crowd and I was right. He asked me “are you related to the other Zack Pomerleau who plays harp?” We then got our food. The steak was great; sous vide.

After the show we stopped to get some snacks. Andrew made me try Tahitian Treat. It’s just fruit punch that’s carbonated. We headed back and I hung out for the night.

Our next gigs are on their main stage and then some local pizza place called The Mill House.Baca lagi

Day 19 - The Mill House

Today was an easy day. We all slept in and then got some food. We got tacos and I only ate two. When I get home I’m only eating salads and such for awhile. All this bbq and Mexican is just not good to me anymore! We then found a humongous football field at the high school and threw the Aerobie again for about an hour until it starting raining.

We then went back to our rooms and got ready. We decided to go to the place our second gig was at and set up as much as we could so we didn’t have to rush over. While doing so all the main stage gigs were cancelled so we sat around for a few hours. I got some pizza that was kind of not good. Makes me miss Portland Pie. I then went outside and saw a cotton candy stand selling popcorn. I got one for each of us.

We had an interesting thing happen where some dude brought in a guitar and had us all sign it for him. Ben and one of his band mates showed up plus one of Doug’s friends from Cortez who recently moved elsewhere for a job. He told us about it and his crypto currency adventures.

The gig went smoothly. After some drunk musicians talked to us for an hour and wouldn’t leave. One dude told me I must get a smaller kit like Gene Krupa (who used a big one). They left and we went back to the hotel, bringing some dude who couldn’t find an Uber after his gig.

Day 20 - Blind Willies

Well today was the last day of the tour officially. We made the ride out to Atlanta which was only like four hours, if not less. We stopped at a gas station called QT and got ourselves some snacks (Andrew and I both got pickles). They had a kitchen like Wawa but it was only open during set hours. Not as cool.

We got into town and killed some time in the Little Five Points going to a ridiculously hipster record shop. Overpriced records was all they had. Check out the KISS records they had. One was signed by Bruce and Eric Singer...not worth $150. We then headed to the gig and found the blues dance class they had gong on hasn’t ended yet.

Me and Liz’s friends Joe and Heidi showed up to the gig which was super awesome. They went with a friend of theirs named Chassidy. The show went really well and we even had a harmonica player sit in. It was packed.

We packed up and hit the road so we could make it a few hours closer to Florida. On the way we made more Herbert jokes and watched Talladega nights. A great way to end the tour. Home soon!Baca lagi

Not much to say other than I am home now. It was a really fun tour and I met a lot of cool people. I leave again in a month. Until then maybe I’ll go to the beach or something.
