As we jumped off the Hoppa bus, ‘Oh yes, yes def Terminal 2’ I said confidently, then seconds later: ‘Errr oh no it isn’t….. Sorry’

Luckily the two terminals are a short walk from each other. That’ll teach Col to take my word for it!

Gone are the airline desks, and scowling faces of the check in staff. These days you can enjoy the considerable faff of self check in. Once you’ve acquired your octopus arms to juggle passports, luggage receipts, sticking the printed ID label on your bags, four sets of boarding passes, suitcases and your sanity, the relief of waving goodbye to your luggage is immense.

We were then able to saunter casually to security, where we’d been invited to book our ‘Going through security’ time slot ahead of time. This was a quick process, albeit with the usual undressing and extrication of a wedged in laptop, keys, liquids, belts etc.

After an eye wateringly priced Pret snack, we currently languish in the departure lounge, which invites us to buy Ray-Bans, Harrods souvenirs, craft beer and sushi. My brain cells are slowly evaporating, as I anticipate the flight ahead…..

Following a ‘go around’ after the captain aborted his first landing, we’ve emerged blinking in the bright lights of arrivals. After a pointless security scan, we trudge wearily to departures. We could be in any airport in the world, same shops, vibe, beep beep of airport buggies!

Second flight ok, we both managed some sleep which was a bonus and the ‘bland meals’ which I selected for myself ahead of time, were better than the previous flight. You also get your delicious bland food tray before everyone else, thus robbing you of that anxious wait to see if your food choice will still be available!

Oddly for the second time today (if it is still today, or is it tomorrow?), the pilot had two attempts at landing, due to high cross winds.

Lost count of how many electronic gates we passed through immigration and customs, to feel we’d actually arrived, but despite the no of people, it was fairly slick. I pasted a pleasant (perhaps slightly crazed) smile on my face to appear friendly and unintimidated by the process.

Had my first encounter with a Japanese loo. I kept it simple this time, but may well indulge in some button pressing in the comfort of our hotel…..Read more

Breakfast or lunch? After a bit of searching found somewhere to eat. Love a bit of sushi, so this place was apt.

As we’re rapidly learning, there’s an order / system to life here.

The queuing system is a line of chairs outside the restaurant. You then shuffle your bum along the chairs, as people at the front are taken to their seats.

Inside we ordered on a touch screen but were also temped by plates on the conveyer.
Every so often the waitress gets on a mic and whatever she says, the customers reply back in unison. We’re jet lagged and baffled (and vice versa) so just let it all play out!Read more

There seems to be no shortage of people happy to help us. A Korean student helped us escape Shibuya station last night (we might still be wandering around, it’s a maze).

In the Sushi bar, a kindly local tried to show us the ropes which involved making green tea (an acquired taste). Sign language is all we needed plus lots of smiling and nodding! It seems the desire to help clueless tourists, like ourselves, is strong and we’re very grateful for it.

So lots of walking, negotiating the metro system, and getting to grips with the baffle of buying tickets from a machine - think we’ve nailed that now.

•Seeing unexpectedly early cherry blossom
•Meiji Jingu Shinto Shrine
•Akihabara - electronics shopping area
•Ginza Scramble Crossing
•Finding dinner, then queuing to get a lift 14 floors down to ground level
•Looking for lost things in our luggage (and not finding them!)
•A sign that made us smile!

Completely mobbed, the opposite of tranquil and reflective. All the guidebooks suggest you visit, and everyone did just that, at the same time 😬

There were lots of folk dressed in traditional kimonos which was lovely (not as Geishas, which is what I thought at first, the latter being quite different!). I’m aware it might be a bit creepy of me to take pics of random strangers….😬

We paid 100¥ (50p) to get our fortunes told….. Mine was a bad one 😳, Col’s was good! You keep the good ones and tie the bad ones a post - which I duly did!Read more

It’s a bit out of the way, in a couple of small rooms, but then you enter and there are REAL OWLS. Lots of them, perched around the room, in a half snooze, waiting to be admired, occasionally omitting a little owly murmur.

We each partook (is that a word?) of an owl or two. Heaven.

If owls aren’t your thing, there are cat, dog, hedgehog and bunny cafes - if we’d had time I’d have visited them all!Read more

I was a bit smug in a previous post, suggesting we’d ‘nailed’ the metro tick purchasing thing. We bought two tickets, but for some reason we haven’t quite fathomed, the gates didn’t like them. Luckily Col tried again, and all was well. Had intended to buy a Pasmo travel card, but these seemed as elusive as hen’s teeth, so we had to get singles each time. Prob not the cheapest way tho’ 🤷‍♀️

On arrival back at Shibuya Station, which has multiple levels, train lines and exits, we amazingly emerged from the escalator right next to our hotel. The previous two nights we’d exited at opposite ends of the plaza.

Shibuya on a Saturday night was heaving with folk! As I lay awake in the early hours (4am ish), fighting my jet lag, I could hear voices singing, a repetitive bass line and general ‘revelry’ - and we were on the 24th floor!Read more

For night views, we headed to floors 350 & 450.

The place was mobbed, hoards of visitors corralled into groups for queuing, ticket printing, up lifts, down lifts, the glass floor terror, getting a cuppa - you name it.

Good views but for me, too crowded to fully enjoy.

Having watched Jane McDonald (one of my cultural references for Tokyo!) on her televised trip to Japan, we were keen to visit Pepper Parlour, a cafe where robots interact with you at your table. I tried to book this ahead of time, but the online reservation process was impenetrable!

Big, but not brash, a mystic narnia of techno niknaks one moment and shinto shrine to refresh your spirit (and that of the other 152,854 visitors) the next moment. Loved looking at the shop displays…..

We enjoyed the Animate shop, all things Anime, including banks of vending machines full of trinkets in plastic capsules. We both used up some small change to get a trinket thingy!

Also enjoyed Muji (minimalism) and Diaso (maximalism), the latter is essentially a £1 shop but with lots of cute bits and bobs you don’t need but want anyway!Read more

Luckily I’d done a bit of repacking last night, because after my wakeful night, I then overslept. After a smartish brekkie and ‘jamming things in our bags’ sesh, we had a few hours to wonder around.

Now at the airport, having successfully negotiated the maze of Shibuya station to find the airport train platform. We are sharing our flight with a school group. I hope very much they’ll be chilled on the flight…..

‘Smart’ airport check in - discuss:
We managed the self service boarding pass/bag label juggle better this time, but then realised we had to join a very long, snaky queue for the bag drop. We’ve been in the queue for nearly one hour, inching forward at a snail’s pace 🫤

Is it smart, I wonder, getting the general public to bag drop their own luggage, on slow working screens, whilst Qantas staff patrol to watch we’re doing things right?

Hello Melbourne, clocks forward another 2 hours 🥱

We had to make the transition from international arrivals to domestic departures, which was quite a painful process as it turned out.

Got thru passport control, and picked up our luggage ok. To exit international arrivals, we needed to clear customs, which meant joining one of the massive queues of zombie passengers, winding around the conveyor belts. A queue was bad enough, but with our onward flight a couple of hours away, we pictured ourselves still shuffling forward as our plane to Hobart took off.

Then, as if by magic, there was movement and we were quickly propelled out into arrivals proper - relief.

Next hurdle, rechecking in our luggage. Had to ask for help as the scanner couldn’t read our pre printed boarding passes. Then we had trouble with the bag drop (more help needed). We were slightly told off for taking our previous label off (how did we know?), then had to have our baggage allowance adjusted as it thought we had excess luggage.

Finally, we completed all levels of the game, hopped on the short flight to Hobart and here are - easy peasy 🥴🙃🤪Read more

The last few days have been full on with flights, jet lag and seeing as much as we could squeeze in, in Tokyo. I really enjoyed the vibe, we did a lot in our limited time, but I was ready to leave too. Tokyo is defo an assault on all the senses 😵‍💫

Hopefully a more relaxing time ahead, in the three weeks we’re here. We have 3 days in Hobart, which is a complete opposite to Tokyo! Tokyo was loud, larger than life and fast. Hobart is compact, chilled and peaceful.

Had a slow motion meander around this afternoon, did a load of washing and settled into our accommodation. Looking forward to the next few days…. Just need to catch up on some 💤💤💤💤 now….Read more

So we’re now in the southern hemisphere which means SUMMER ☀️☀️☀️

A chilled day which was much needed. After brekkie and some general sorting of stuff (which, now set free from their confines, has quadrupled in mass), our first job was to get our phones sorted with Telstra.

We’d bought SIMs the day before, then spent the evening trying to get them to work. We became well acquainted with the massively helpful message ‘something’s not right’. We were frustrated (to say the least) and had to concede a win to the SIM cards.

We marched into Telstra, took a deep breath, and recounted our woes. Turns out it’s a known issue, nothing to do with us 🫤The very helpful Luke set us up within 20 mins - happy days.

We then pottered about for the rest of the day, getting our bearings (well, Col did, I’d still get lost in a blink) and getting tuned into Hobart’s chilled vibe.

There were fishing vessels in the marina, selling their fresh catches of the day, most fish unknown to us.

Our accom is next to the University of Tasmania, with marine and Antarctic studies the main focus. Didn’t know Hobart was a pushing off point for Antarctica. There’s also a recreated Antarctic expedition hut, for a chappie called Mawson, which we’ll visit tomorrow.

Col flew the drone for some great aerial shots, then we spotted a scenic seaplane flight possibility so hoping we might get to see things from above for ourselves tomorrow……🤞🏻Read more

The waters were crystal, the weather perfect, and the coastline just beautiful.

Really interesting and thought provoking visit to Mawson’s Hut, an authentically recreated version of the real hut still in Cape Denison, Antarctica (and which is currently being restored).

Mawson was the sole survivor of an ill fated expedition, which set off from Hobart. His two team mates perished on that expedition, but somehow Mawson survived. He was key to Australia claiming 42% of Antarctica and heralded a hero.Read more

Motor home pick up day. Always a bit fraught, accom check out, taxi to depot, van admin, bags galore, getting to grips with the driving, food shop, navigation, a new space to negotiate - plus it’s been roasting hot today - so hard to think straight.

As we drove away from the depot, we were straight away reminded of the sound effects which come with van living! A cacophony of thuds, jangles, and general misconduct from the onboard equipment. Luckily nothing was broken, despite it feeling like the cupboards would be full of broken bits.

So, here we are, on our first site at Snug Beach. Nowhere near sorted yet, but I remembered the utter bewilderment of the first day from our last trip, and am staying cool (well sort of it was 34 c earlier 🥵). I’m doing my usual of pretty much reorganising all the cupboards and drawers, to make room for our bits. Feels like there’s less storage in here, so real creativity needed…..🤔

We’re in a different camper this time so a different design/layout. So with no further ado, let me we introduce you to Sheila……. She’s quite new, and welcoming, but no pushover. If she doesn’t want something in the drawer she’s already let me know!

Note the addition of a pull out step to get in and out, very welcome for this shortie, but inside the microwave and cupboards are well out of my league, so a new step has been purchased for indoor use 😂

Traveler(so far) there has been a distinct lack of hoots, bings and bongs from the on board equipment, and the side door has proven its reluctance to open in transit. So, its already looking better.

TravelerI love the camper pics, trying to imagine myself in there and how I would stow everything, it's all so clever, little places for everything. Do you have to put everything away each day before driving or can you leave things out on the surfaces? More Sheila pics needed

TravelerYou defo have to tidy and stow before each trip, there’s a checklist of things we have to do. Will do a more detailed Sheila post - with cupboard pics!
