    Finally to relax

    May 20 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

    Day one, get house closed down, packed and to the airport…..now relax.
    We have 2.5 hours to wait. We sailed thru checking our bags and security and now getting a bite to eat.
    Sad to leave Calgary when it looks like it will finally get nice.

    But alas, that is what vacay is about. We are heading to London for a couple of days to see a show, and see some sights.

    Then on Saturday it will be off to Budapest. It all sounds like fun.

    What , I’m Hungry?

    Here we are just taking off and all I am thinking of is food. It is 810pm.
    First things, I was served a lovely bowl of nuts and a glass of wine! I am in heaven.
    Dinner arrives with a salad and bun! It is 10pm! I should be asleep!
    I am watching “All Her Fault”, interesting but I think I will sleep soon😊
    The flight to London is smooth the entire trip. That’s unusual. Often there is turbulence over Greenland, but not tonight. Makes for a pleasant journey.    Read more

    A night out

    May 21 in England ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

    We all got on a bus back to LHR and then switched to an Underground for a ride into London. We have tickets to “The Play that Goes Wrong” and we are hungry too so we eat at pleasant Italian restaurant just off Leicester Square seated outside. It is what I recall as being a rare day in London. Sunny sky, warm temperature, light breeze.

    After a relaxing, enjoyable meal we strolled to the Duchess Theatre.
    We were seated in the Dress Circle with a great view of the stage. Dianne and I both recommend this show, and as the name implies, lots goes wrong.
    We stayed awake for the whole show, and made our way back to our airport hotel by 11 pm. Didn’t have any trouble going to sleep.    Read more

    A train adventure

    May 22 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

    In a similar way to last night’s excursion, we made our way to London and connected to a National Railway Service to Arundel. We get to see some countryside on the two hour journey, and there is supposed to be a castle when we get there. There is a castle, so that isn’t disappointing. The Duke of Norfolk as well as his family live there today. Don’t get me started on the travesty of paying money to visit the home of a rich guy, but we’ll leave that alone for a while.

    It is a pleasant walk from the train station to Arundel. Wildflowers are in bloom and the four of us are all getting along pretty well. It is agreed that things could be worse.

    Budapest

    May 23 in England ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

    We got up early to get a 9:20 flight to Budapest. We checked in yesterday and took the only two seats left on BA864. Dianne and I were not seated together, but it is only a couple of hours… she should be fine. My seat is a middle seat about middle of the A319. Dianne has been upgraded to business class, go figure.
    The four of us Uber to our hotel on the Pest side of the Danube river. Things happened so fast this morning, and we can’t remember if we packed all our stuff so there is some anxiety before we get to the hotel. Turns out we have all our stuff. We suffer from poor memory more than poor packing.

    We take to the streets to do some shopping. A hat for Tom and sunglasses. The streets are busy with people as it is Saturday.

    In the evening we went for a stroll along the boardwalk. It was full of life, music, food, dancing and oh so many people.    Read more

    Drive around Budapest

    A morning bus ride to take in some of the highlights of Budapest. This is one of my favourite cities.

    We drove by the opera house, Heroes Square and then up to the Citadella for an amazing view.

    Vukovar Croatia

    Vukovar is a city that has been rebuilt since the homeland war, as referred to by the local people. It was destroyed in 1991 over a period of 87 days. Our guide Romina, was 5 years old at the time. Most buildings are restored, some are not and the people have preserved an artillery shell hole in the city centre. The recent history is well documented at the museum and is sobering to think about considering the current war in Ukraine and well as Lebanon.Read more

    Surprise birthday celebration for Dianne?.

    Ilok, Croatia

    We are only about 30 kms from Vukovar, but Ilok was pretty much unscathed during the home war because they surrendered quickly. The afternoon has been advertised as a wine tasting event, but you have to pay some dues and listen to stories about the heroes who saved the towns stash of wines by hiding it from the enemy in the wine cellar disguised to be smaller than it really is.Read more

    Petrovardin Fortress

    Afternoon hike

    May 26 in Serbia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

    The afternoon activity is a hike to the fortress you see in the first picture. It is a hot day, (32 degrees) and our guide likes to stop often to give us the history of the area.

    This was the slow walk hike. The 200 stairs to the top of the fortress were punctuated with three rests so the guide could keep talking.

    The pictures speak for themselves! We “hiked” for 2 1/2 hours and we learned some more Serbian history and family stories.
    It was a good day!

    Saint Sava

    Saint Sava is one of the largest orthodox churches in the world. I would suggest it is also one of the newest as the interior of the cathedral was finished in the last five years.

    Some monks from the Greek Orthodox Church have lent a piece of clothing they have. It belonged to the Virgin Mary and the Serbian Orthodox Church is using the piece to bring people to the church. As a result, this spot is much more popular than usual, with lineups outside extending to many hours. Our tour group had to fight the multitude to get in, and it seemed we didn’t make a lot of friends in the process. But as the pictures show, we did get in. We snuck in the back door.Read more

    120 steps up to the walking plaza

    We took the afternoon to enjoy a walk into town. It was a mere 120 steps to get up to the town from the port….The streets don’t seem as busy as other European cities we’ve seen. I guess everyone has gone to church. The ice cream was very good.
    The coffee shop/bar known only by the question mark symbol was called the Cathedral Cafe until the bishop forbade it in 1892. It is the oldest bistro still operating in Belgrade.

    Digging for Mysteries

    Secondly today we went to a Mesolithic Archeological site of Lepenski Vir. Lepenski Vir is a prehistoric settlement, the oldest known one in Europe. According to Wikipedia the latest radiocarbon dating suggests 7500-5500 BC. These are old bones. What I found interesting was that among all of the things discovered, there were no weapons. The skeletons unearthed showed no broken bones, and no missing teeth.Read more

    Sailing along the Danube

    We are now on our way to Bulgaria. Leaving the shores of Donji- Milanovac we are in the part of the Danube called the “Iron Gate”
    It is the Danube Gorge with Serbia on one side and Romania on the other. Interesting enough there is an hour time difference between the shores.Read more

    Remarkable rock formations on the western slopes of the Balkan Mountains. One of our fellow travellers has squeaky shoes. He has tormented us now for three days and seems oblivious to the constant noise makes with every step. If I had shoes like that I’m pretty sure it would be the end of my marriage, maybe my life.Read more

    Baba Vida Fortress is located right in Vidin. I guess you would say it is the original Vidin. From our guide we learned a lot of the history of Bulgaria and some about what it was like to grow up in an Eastern Bloc country. As she looks back on her life, she shared that it was nice childhood, she had a good education, some economic turmoil, but an enjoyable life. As with everyone, her experience is a reflection of her own ability to manage the chaos that life can be.Read more
