Friday

A good start to a string of days that feels very long at this point! We made up for some disappointment over missing Phoenix by booking tickets to Italy for next year. That helped considerably! 🇮🇹
A dark morning, we're expecting an atmospheric river to come through starting later today. Brightened up as well by getting in some time with my glass. I like to have music on when I'm not grinding, today the Emily in Paris soundtrack. Quite fitting as we are routing to Rome via Paris. ♥️
We did end up crossing the border after all, just by car instead of air. I haven't been to Trader Joe's for years. Still a great place to shop and the crowds in the store attest to that.
I bought some wine in another grocery store and the clerk asked me for ID. As I got it out I said I kind of thought my face was enough proof of age 😅. She didn't seem to think that was as funny as I did though.
A delicious dinner in Bellingham at a Chinese buffet seemed wise. Excellent food, and my fortune reminds me to have an interesting holiday. The utter lack of any fortune at all in Brad's was a bit perturbing though. The staff laughed and said that meant good luck for him, but we didn't quite believe them.
Home with our little family all on the couch, and sipping some - what else but Italian - coffee!Les mer

Atmospheric River Weekend

A rest and relax weekend, pouring rain for most of it. So we decided to check out the accommodations. Seems very homey. Hot tub, fireplace. I'm a bit disappointed there's no pool or gym but oh well. To be fair there is some exercise equipment around, but it's rather dusty.
I got to my book club meeting that I thought I'd miss, a delayed discussion of last months book The Art Thief. Definitely recommend! We meet at the Blacksmith Bakery in Fort Langley, which I also can recommend 😊
The car started making a weird loud sound on my way home. So Brad's spontaneous activity was tightening up loose lug nuts on the tire.
Its so enjoyable having time to relax, it makes such a difference not having that pressure to fit life in around chores. Today I went to an open free access day at the BC genealogical society in Surrey while Brad played pickleball.
Met some really nice people, and found a few records to add. I love how people that are into family history search just immediately understand. They know brick walls, and they absolutely get the thrill of finding your ancestors on paper. They offer courses here so that's something to consider and of course, always looking for volunteers for indexing.
The society planning a group trip to Salt Lake City next year. As someone remarked, Muslims go to Mecca, genealogists go to Salt Lake City. 😂
We also got a house exchange request to Portugal, in the Duoro Valley. We really enjoyed our brief trip there, so we'll take a few days to consider this proposal for 2026.Les mer

Some great, calm, days

I have a Rolling Stones song stuck in my head the last few days: You Can't Always Get What You Want. It's the chorus, "you just might find, you get what you need" . That's what my last few days have felt like. Peaceful, productive.
Much of my projects are Christmas and gift related. And I'm doing a bit of very satisfying deep cleaning.
Around that, we found a great new chicken wing place, completed an annoying puzzle, and have been trouble shooting an annoying regular beep emitting from our alarm system. The company says it's not them and we can't isolate it as being anything else. A relaxing massage one day at anew place in Abbotsford helped deal with that stress.
Brad has begun a regular workout program and is a bit unwilling to interrupt his fledgling routine. Plus, poker is sacred. So this week we've been home more. Which has also given me more down time for the search for that elusive unicorn, an affordable hotel in Paris that is convenient, safe & in a preferred location! I thrive on this kind of search though.
That has worked out well, as I was contacted by a past customer from my lotion making enterprise with a special request and a big order. That was unexpected, and fortunately I had the time. He was extremely complimentary, and it was so rewarding to compound again. I have not done much of that recently.
Next several days we have some more local events and experiences we are looking forward to. And I can fully enjoy, knowing how many items I've been able to cross off the never ending to do list!Les mer

Vancouver Tourist Day

So today we are definitely acting as tourists (close to) our home town. It's a bit dreary and overcast as we merge into the stream of traffic headed westward to the city.
But some lightening and clearing are already evident as we neatly snag a prime parking spot right by the entrance to Van Dusen Gardens. It's a discounted entry with our Compass cards and no lineup.
Even in late October there's still colour everywhere, just more the trees than floral. Hardly anyone else is around as we stroll over to the Elizabethan maze first. Its even dark green walls are an appealing puzzle to us, and we take turns leading, switching every time we run into a dead end. Which is at first funny, then disconcerting. Trying to apply logic, like spatially we must be here, or attempting tricks such as make every turn left and you'll get there....didn't work.
There are only 6 of these mazes in North America. At least the permanent kind. At this time of year, corn mazes are everywhere! I like the cedars of this one though, all 3000 or so of them!
We'll have to vanquish this maze another time. There's so much more to see and explore. Large open spaces are punctuated with massive trees, and bordered with flowering bushes and plants from all around the world. Seriously beautiful here, I can't believe it took us this many years to come see.
But for now, we have a reservation for afternoon tea at the Fairmont at Vancouver Airport. We've never done an afternoon tea before, and don't know what to expect. This is a rare treat, and also a deal with our Compass cards. The floor to ceiling windows of the lounge restaurant area look out onto the runways of the domestic end of the terminal. It's completely soundproof though. A vast fireplace flickers nearby as we're seated by the window, and our waiter gives us the menu.
It all sounds amazing and tempting, and the hardest decision is the tea, as everything else is set. We deliberate carefully before selecting Cream of Earl Gray and Bella Coola Punch.
Tall silver French presses are brought to us, steaming hot and fragrant. In short order, tall trays of delectable treats are presented. We savour every sip and bite. So elegantly presented, but nothing pretentious about it. And the flavor combinations are fabulous : smoked Gouda tart with hazelnut pesto, ricotta and peach bruschetta. Incredible.
I am struck by the idea that many years ago, you could just go to the airport and take the next flight anywhere. Brad says you still can, if money is no object. But I think that detracts from the romance of the concept. I'll check the departures board on the way out, just to see.
So we leave the airport and slam directly into rush hour traffic 😅 this, we haven't missed! We inch along, back at least to the comforts of home and not a hotel. Time enough for that, as we pore over every booking site we know, continuing the search for an affordable hotel in a decent arrondissement in Paris.Les mer

The magical mystery day

Or as Brad referred to it, our metaphysical day 😅
We started off with a yoga class. Enjoyable, just what I needed with a stiff back lately. The instructor at the local community centre is really good. Her voice is really pleasant, low and sort of musical, so it's a bit of a moving meditation. You just have to give yourself over to it and go along.
Later, inspired by our afternoon tea experience, I decided to make scones and pseudo clotted cream, to bring to Cory and Nick's.
We're meeting later for tea at their place before heading to the show Mesmerica at the plantarium.
The scones turned out excellent, and we had them with rhubarb geranium jam Nicole had brought me from Paris. It was unbelievable, and I have another stop to try and fit in our quick visit there next year, La Chambre aux Confitures.
The show was mesmerizing, for sure. A choreographed light and music show which really almost surrounds you in the domed theatre of the planetarium. It's described as a visual journey, accompanied by an overall positive and uplifting message. Cory and I both experienced feeling like we'd kind of sunk into it and lost track of time. It's designed to be stress relieving, and it's successful at that.
We followed that up with a busy home day, housework, projects. I feel like I've been off work for a very long time, with a week yet to go. I found myself worrying that I've forgotten to go back to work on time 😅Les mer

Vancouver tour day #2

I spent most of yesterday canning with Cory, how fantastic to spend the day together! We made pickled apples and shallots in balsamic with juniper and peppercorns...a recipe Cory found that definitely intrigued me!
I think they turned out fabulous, from an early test on burgers last night. These flavors are going to mellow and meld beautifully.
So today, we started off at the salt caves in North Vancouver. You can get a massage in the cave, where the walls, floors and ceiling are all lined with salt. Breathing the air is meant to be therapeutic, beneficial for the respiratory system as well as the immune system and reducing stress. It's a lovely relaxing space with salt grains crunching underfoot like coarse sand and the gentle glow of Himalayan salt lit from within.
I loved it and had a really expert perfect massage. Brad has a masseuse with too light of a touch, unfortunately.
From there we crossed the always busy Lions Gate Bridge and through Stanley Park. Our goal is the Roedde House Museum. Parking in the west end is challenging to say the least, and we find a spot on Robson, having to walk back a few blocks in the rain.
We forget being cold and wet as soon as we arrive at the museum. It's a Victorian built for the Roedde family in 1893. Mr Roedde was the first book binder in Vancouver, coming here from Leipzig Germany. The architect was Francis Rattenbury who famously also designed the Parliament Building in Victoria as well as the stately Empress Hotel. The house is cozily welcoming and beautifully restored to as close to its original condition.
Being at first the only guests to brave a dark and rainy day, we are treated to a personal private tour. The docent who guided us gave background information and stories of the family. She was so well versed in this family's history and gave us tales of family scandals, tragedies and successes, along with descriptions of life in Vancouver at that time. A most excellent tour, thoroughly enjoyed.
We were eventually joined by a young couple from France on a world tour starting on the west coast of Canada, and ended with a most interesting discussion of local history and attractions with another volunteer.
On the way back to the car, I realized we were parked by the Greenbrier hotel. Many more years back than I care to count, we would occasionally stay there when visiting old family friends from Port Alice days.
A short drive and a quick stop on Granville for a late lunch at El Furniture Warehouse. Good food and prices that seem more like a decade ago make the more updated music more bearable, and we're proficiently served by a friendly young man from London.
So homeward bound through rush hour traffic again, to be greeted by a disgruntled Sam and Seven. As seniors, they really don't appreciate this disruption to their routines 😅Les mer
Going back to Italy sounds amazing! I would take that over Phoenix! ❤️ [Barb]
