    Barcelona

    After a delayed flight from Miami to Barcelona (which worked in our favor since our hotel room was ready when we arrived,one night stay here. Teeny tiny hotel room but clean, quiet and comfortable. Excellent Foodie tour starting with dessert-a custard filled pastry-so yummy! Then some roasted almonds at an ancient store which roasts their own nuts, then savory tapas with wine (the egg/cheese/potato thing was the best then walked to the waterfront and had anchovies, calamari, and paella as well as sangria.     Llivia, Spain in the Cerdanya Valley

    1st day with Backroads-didn't disappoint!! Shuttled to our first ride after a light lunch accompanied by some accordion music. 33 kilometers through the Cerdanya valley. Absolutely breathtaking scenery. The rain held off during our ride. Ended up at a small family runned hotel-clean and comfortable in the town of Llivia which is in Spain but surrounded by France. Nice meal in town. Ready for a whole day of riding tomorrow.Leggi altro

    Experienced a variety of weather on our bike rides today. Very cool, cloudy start riding out of the Cerdanya valley up to ride along the Pyrenees. Had some sun prior to lunch and then rode up the mountains some more. Beautiful scenery and peaceful roads. Coming down the mountain we had rain and even some sleet. All part of these trips. Had more Catalonian food-restaurants don't open until 8 PM here.Leggi altro

    Llivia to Girona

    Last day in the Pyrenees. Biked up the mountain 16 miles and then down the other side for 16 miles. Weather was cool for the ride up and warmer on the ride down. Amazing scenery! Had lunch at a convent turned into hotel/restaurant. Best meal we have had so far! Shuttled 1 1/2 hours to Girona. Boutique hotel right in the center city. Very interesting town-no time to really check it out.Leggi altro

    Riding to the coast

    Left Girona and rode 42 miles to Corda. We rode 6K up and then down a "hill" that the pro cyclist practice on for Le Tour De France-Els Angels Climb. Panoramic views from the top. Rode to lunch in Corca where we had a delicious salad and the very popular potatoes Salsa Bravas. Quick ride to our hotel in a castle with some beautiful views from our room. Dinner was in Peratallada-another very ancient cobblestoned village. Tomorrow is our last all day ride-heading to the coastline.Leggi altro

    Transition day

    Good bye to our first Backroads group. Had a lovely morning ride into nearby medieval towns then transported to Barcelona where we said good bye. Then got on a speed train to Madrid. 3 hour trip-nice scenery. Here for 2 nights. Tonight just chilled up on the rooftop and watched sunset. Curious why sunset here is so late-9:17PMLeggi altro

    Madrid in a day

    Not much time here but we had a ebike tour this morning-we could choose where we wanted to go so we chose the parks. Rode 24 km around some beautiful parks and rivers plus did couple tourist stops statutes and castles. Despite the rain, it was nice. Nice lunch where we could get a nice fresh salad. Food tour tonight with lots of tapas and wine. Our favorite was this simple potato salad made with just olive oil, garlic parsley and boiled potatoes [f course salt and pepper. I think they slipt a little mayo in it. So tasty! Then some Basque cheesecake -light and creamyLeggi altro

    Madrid to Salamanca

    First day with our second Backroads trip. Met up and drove to Salamanca, Spain. Afternoon ride was 48 KM (we chose the longer route) through beautiful rural landscapes. Saw quite a few storks in their huge nests. Cool and windy but the sun was shining. Ended at our hotel which is apparently where Christopher Columbus stayed while he was planning to go to find a route to the Indes which we know now was America.     Biking to the Douro River Valley

    Left Salamanca and drove 3 hours to Portugal. Stopped at a unique convenience store for coffee and bathroom-quite an interesting assortment of merchandise-Iberian Ham, guns and snacks. Then rode the bikes 18 miles to lunch at a farm house where everything we ate, they grew. And now we are in the country of Port wine so had some after lunch-very nice. Then biked another 29 miles up the mountains and then down to the river valley. Absolutely the most breathtaking scenery I have seen!!!! Pictures don't do it justice! Every turn, I was in awe!! Even with cloudy, slightly rainy weather. Beautiful hotel tonight-dinner in their wine cellar. Enjoyed their tawny port. More Portugal tomorrowLeggi altro

    Raiva, Portugal

    Left Vila Real and rode 26 miles up and down the mountains alongside the Douro River. We finally have some sunny, warmish weather. The views were magnificent! Lots of cherries trees loaded with fruit. Orange and lemon trees. Nice lunch by the side of the river- tasty Portugal meat sauce and spaghetti! Afternoon was 18 miles to a dock on the river where we boarded a pontoon boat and motored up (or down not sure) the river to our hotel seemingly carved into the mountainside. Very spacious room with beautiful balcony surrounded by blooming jasmine. Dinner at a Michelin restaurant which was fine but we agreed the roasted chicken at the farmhouse was better. One more full riding day and then the trip is completeLeggi altro

    Paivas Region

    Last full day of biking. Rode 45 miles through the Paivas region away from the river. Went through Eucalyptus forests which of course were fragrant. Lots of up, up, up and down, down ,down. Stopped for lunch at another fabulous family farm. Since the weather cooperated, we had a real picnic. The Rose wine was very nice! Short PM ride just 8 miles so we took the wine we bought at the vineyard and hung out at the infinity pool for the afternoon with parts of the group. Pre -dinner entertainment was some Portuguese folk music which was very entertaining. Last dinner with everyone was quite nice actually better than the Michelin star restaurant. Simple food cooked right!! Moving day tomorrow and good bye to this fantastic group!Leggi altro

    Lisbon, Portugal

    End of our trip. Left Raiva and drove to Porto. We took a train to Lisbon for our flight home tomorrow. If you weren't paying keen attention to the signs and talked to people, you could easily miss your train. Stayed at an airport hotel so pictures are the contrast from the view from our Douro hotel and from our Lisbon hotel. Back home tomorrowLeggi altro
