    62 mile ride today with full packs and 1,600 ft assent. We rested at Montour, a small town of 300 where the Mayor stopped mowing the grass to greet us and even unlocked the bathrooms for us. Iowans have been very friendly. Multiple road closed issues on our attempt to get into our destination city of MarshallTown - nearly forced to take the highway in. Due to Road Closures and Water Over Road issue. A manditory stop for bike parts in town and pick up an equipment package we had delivered to the UPS store.Les mer

  • Des Moines day off

    A day for R&R. Taking the day off for rest and washing everything and probably need more deodorant. Walking around town towards riverfront and came across Rotary park. The artwork of a fishing pole and bobber is really something. Another huge rainstorm this evening while visiting local establishments. Crossing fingers for nice weather tomorrow.Les mer

  • High Trestle Trail Bridge

    56 mile ride after a much needed day off. The goal this week is arrive at Omaha. So far, the rest stops are just too darn nice. Yellow oasis trailhead included perforated picnic tables, bench swings fresh water and a bike repair station.
    Stopped for Italian pizza at Flat Tire Lounge located right next to the trail. A nice convenience. The High Trestle Bridge over Des Moines river is over 1/2 mile long. Is a unique design, views and nighttime lighting.
    Temps this week are expected at 105 degree feel like temps so will need to watch it.

    50 mile ride today under mostly flat conditions and increasingly warmer weather. Crossed the Des Moines river as well as the Racoon River. There is a Heat Advisory until tomorrow night. We are currently cooling at an ice cream bar in Coon Rapids, IA. About a mile from camp. The goal this week is Omaha for rest and supplies before heading onto The Cowboy Trail.

    51 Miles with 2,156 ascent. Rolling hills under very hot conditions, high humidity and high winds and gravel roads. As a cow affectionado, you should of seen my face after seeing Albert the largest bull was cowtriffic. A bit tuckered out to add anything else.

    65 Miles with 2,800 ascent. Rolling hills with 16 summits. Improved riding conditions with cooler weather after the storms came through last night soaking all our equipment. Visited the Golden Spike monument driven by Abraham Lincoln for Union Pacific Railroad. Arrived in a new state Nebraska, Omaha. Yeah!Les mer

    36 miles on an Extreme Heat day. Shorter mileage to be safe and avoid the afternoon high temps. The country farms included more cattle ranch and a bit less corn fields. Stopped at Elkhorn coffee shop to cool off in Scribner, NE. Lots and lots of gravely dirt roads with increased difficulties.Les mer

    Late start today after a large storm last night. Wind speeds 50 to 60 mph with a large storm front battering the tent until midnight while i held the tent poles from collapsing.
    Today, started along The Cowboy Trail. This will lead us across Nebraska. First impressions is a well made trail. Although the wet gravel, a slight headwind and increasing elevation made it challenging. Camping at Neligh with a county fair this week.Les mer

  • Cowboy Trail - O'Neill, NE

    43 miles today with 300 ft assent as we follow the cowboy trail which is an old train bed. The campground is the site of the Neligh county fair and many horses and cattle. Waved at a single cyclist on the road today. We talked to a rancher with his crew along the trail. He enjoyed comparing ranch work with the challenges of riding across the country. Many bridges across Elkhorn river and new to us - Prairie views. All in all, a good riding day with Chris and Ger.Les mer

    51 miles with 400 ft assent on the Cowboy Trail from O'Neill to Bassett today. Increasing views of prarie and less crops. The trail was rough in spots and we had to dodge many badger holes and thousands of grasshoppers.
    We camped at Rock County Fairgrounds in Bassett. The evening was the Rodeo. Kids riding sheep. Horse barrel races and Bull riding. My first Rodeo.

  • Valentine, Nebraska - Sandhills region

    65 mile day with 600 ft assent along The Cowboy Trail, a rail-to-trail conversion with a crushed gravel surface. Generally well-maintained but watch out for loose gravel and sand and goat head thorns. Scenic areas include old train bridge across Niobrara River and Long Pine trout bridge. Vast 20,000 acre Ranch farms along the ride today. A southerly wind was welcomed, a new rider Nate from Texas joined at days end, who is on a solo cross country ride.Les mer

    37 miles today with 1,000 for ascent as we climb past 3,000 ft above sea level. We have completed The Cowboy Trail and will be heading west and north now. Will be on road deck for a few days toward the Mickelson Trail. We entered the Mountain Time Zone with showers in the area. Our new riding friend Nate joins briefly for the day then continues.Les mer

    55 mile ride today with 1,800 ft ascent. The city of Gordon is 3,500 ft above sea level located in the Sandhills of Nebraska. It was a nice ride on US RT 20 with prarie views and many Cattle Ranches on both sides. Western Prarie conditions appear very dry compared to central and eastern Nebraska. There was a strong headwind and hot heat along the way, so pleased to have a hotel in Gordon to cool down.Les mer

    Much better riding weather today with temps in the 80's, we accomplished 58 miles with 1,754 ft ascent. Crossed into South Dakota- checkmark on that goal.

    We stopped for lunch at Oelrichs, SD. The town was all dirt road. The Black Hills Saloon Company offered lots of local color. I made a new Sioux Indian friend when we stopped for lunch, I think his name was Ahanu. He cursed and laughed alot. Also a couple of Sioux indian kids rode horses bareback past the saloon.

    Camping at Sunrise Ridge in Hot Springs after a very pleasant day riding and exploring with the team.

    Bo's wee day out and a bike ride in the countryside of South Dakota. 57 miles with 3,227 ft assent on the Mickelson Trail in South Dakota. Reaching an over mile high elevation of 5,859.
    A morning greeting by a flock of buzzards. Miles of trail riding on the Mickelson Trail, past fields and into the black hills. Water available on the trail, turkey roaming the woods. Many Rock formations including one that looked like a toad. Past the Crazy horse memorial. We passed a Mile high of 5,859 elevation and celebrated with a Rattlesnake brat dinner.Les mer

  • Gold mining at Deadwood, SD

    47 mile ride on the Mickelson Trail with 2,245 ascent. Elevation peaked at 6,212 ft. Challenging through the black hills with two peaks and a long downhill toward Deadwood. There were four train tunnels and over a hundred bridges. We had a trail angel Jason who assisted on the decent and shared a beer at the finish. Camping at Whistler Gulch a former mining town. Deadwood with lots of motorcycles in town. Having dinner at Jacob's brewhouse.Les mer

  • Casper, Wyoming

    57 mile ride from Douglas, WY to Casper, WY with 1,700 ft ascent. Last overnight at Douglas was camping along the N. Platte river and site of the state fair this week. We cycled to Casper via a combination of paved and dirt/gravel roads. Traveled past many ranches, historical site and mule deer. The ranches were set up so cattle and horse could roam freely for grazing. They were up close and thankfully friendly.
    As a note, the Narrow Path Team will continue as I need to pause my ride for personal reasons. Planning to meet back up in Bozeman, Montana in a few days.

  • Welcome Bozeman, Montana

    Welcome to Bozeman Montana. I am a couple of days ahead of the NPT team. Stopped at The Gear Wizard for some needed bike repairs. A short ride to College M Trailhead. There are trails available for hikers to climb the mountain. Interesting squawking bird a black-billed Magpie. Visited a nice Rotary Pavilion. Finished at MAP brewing with a nice view of the mountain range.Les mer

  • Lewis & Clark expedition campsite

    28 mile ride through two canyons and elevation 5,500 ft. Triple Tree trail with Prairie Dogs and a chirping bark. The canyon flats followed the river with challenging climbs between. Historical marker of July, 14, 1806 when Captain Clark expedition and Indian guide Sacajawea camped. I very much appreciated the Lemonade stand on the way back to Bozeman.
    A note, I lost my dog Dillon, he was very sick. Miss ya little buddy.

  • Sypes Canyon dirt roads to Reese Creek

    Cooler temperatures allowed an enjoyable 40 mile ride with 1,800 ft ascent along the canyons and valley north of Bozeman. Planning to rejoin the NPT team on Friday. Stopped by the small Reese Creek community center in Springhill Valley area. The mailboxes along the canyon hills looked like bird boxes. Many of the ranches have older looking century type buildings. Nice views from an Elk ranch.Les mer
