    Gangneung Blues

    Another rainy day in the city of Gangneung, spent it by sleeping a little longer than usual (a favourite life prolonging pastime of mine) and then left to walk around the city some more as the constant rain and low visibility due to cloudiness was making anything else a bit pointless, but that was fine, actually it is not so bad to have a slow day every now and then, there will be plenty more days to come, and rainy days are are not the norm in dry season. I went to the local market and enjoyed the spice pregnant air and the hustle and bustle of the people, many people were up and shopping because there is a national holiday on Friday, that explains why my hotel in Donghae is a lot pricier than here, but of course, it will be higher comfort as well. The next few days should finally be sunny again :-)

    Down South to Donghae

    The Sun is out again, and boy, how did I miss her beautiful, yet potentially cancer inducing burning rays of death. If you are like me carrying about 25kgs of absolutely necessary stuff on your back and over your shoulder, while wearing black merino wool tshirts, you try to walk in the shade as much as possible. Either you get drenched by the rain, or your own body fluids, there seem to only be these two extremes. Well, it is still very warm outside, especially after sundown, possibly because of the nearby ocean. Got to Donghae in the afternoon by Bus again, and will enjoy the quiet comfort of my room here quite a lot. Not entirely sure what to do tomorrow, originally I wanted to have a look at some caves, and a park with Penis sculptures, but the locations are a bit far away, I think I will definitely get to visit the beaches and a cave that's conveniently located in town.

    Donghae Beach & Cave Expeditions

    Today's leisurely strolls brought me to the Beach where there is a famous Rock Needle and an interesting Pathway, was enjoying the Scenery from the terrace of a Seven Eleven conveniently placed right above the beach. These little Shops usually have amenities like hot tap water and microwave ovens, Intended to be used with the instant noodles and instant meals you buy inside, they usually also have a seating area inside where you can eat your purchased instant meal. Normally it's frowned upon to eat in public, sometimes it's even not allowed, better translate some of the signs because there isn't allways iconography to tell you that they don't want you to munch there. Afterwards I walked to golden bat cave that was right in town in a hillside, it cost 4000 won to get inside (about 3€) and it was pretty cool. You had to wear a helmet, and it was much needed, I hit my head several times because it was sometimes quite narrow and with a very low ceiling.     Trainride to Andong

    After a tasty breakfast at my Donghae Hotel, I took the Bus to Donghae Train Station. While Taxis are very affordable in South Korea and very convenient, I am not using them, because that would spoil me for the long journey that still lies ahead. Taxis in Taiwan and Japan are much more expensive🫰and not really an option, So I work hard on building the appropriate back muscle 💪. It was quite Easy to buy the ticket and for the distance also quite cheap at around 11€, with a stopover at Jecheon it took me a round 5,5 hours to reach Andong. I arrived close to sunset and spent the rest of the day exploring the surroundings and grabbing dinner.

    A Trip to Hahoe Folk Village

    Hahoe Folk Village, a famous Clan Village was the main attraction I wanted to visit while staying in Andong, it was a bit tricky to get there, since there was a huge traffic jam on the way, either because of Chuseok (people returning home from visiting the family) or because over tourism at Hahoe Village. I had to exit the Bus and walk for about 1 km to reach the outskirts where a really cool Mask Museum, a market and the ticket office was located, there was a shuttle bus service to the village, but I decided to walk the 1000 metres, Instead of waiting in the very long line. The village itself was beautifully scenic and there were a lot of tourists in the narrow alleys between the houses, Queen Elizabeth II had also visited in 1999 and there was a little exhibition to commemorate the event. On my way home, I witnessed Korean efficiency and service culture, the traffic jam was still there, but a bus was shuttling us to a second bus, thus cleverly circumventing the traffic jam.

    Slow days and auspicious Nights

    Today, my Journey was taking me from Andong to Gyeongju. I wanted to take the bus again, because the train connection was less than ideal, but Kakaomaps failed to mention that only 2 busses were going, and the first was already booked out. So I reserved a seat in the second bus which left at 17:50. I had to wait almost 7 hours for my bus. If the lockers still had a large compartment for me to rent, I would have dumped my luggage and returned to the city again, but they were taken and thus I spent the whole day at the express bus station. Thankfully Korean transport stations are much more convenient and comfortable than German stations, they have enough seats and dining areas to spend the time. The Bus left just as scheduled and thankfully the ride was smooth, it was almost 8pm when I arrived at my Hanok guest house where I showered and then went out again to have a look at the surroundings. That proved to be a great idea because the night was beautiful and there was an incredible hustle and bustle in the streets, it was amazing. The area around me is really cool, with lots of royal tombs and historic sites that I will explore thoroughly tomorrow.

    Gyeongju, the Golden City

    My plan for today was to have a closer look at the royal burial mounds, which dot the landscape, Explore the history and artifacts of the ancient Silla Kingdom and visit Bulguksa temple, a world heritage site. I started by traversing the Woljeong bridge, the beautiful bridge I photographed the night before, Near the entrance a kind elderly man started talking to me and gave me great advice which things I should definitely see in Gyeongju, coincidentally the places I had on my agenda. I walked to the grounds where the Silla Kingdom had its heart which was called Banwolseong Fortress, translated a crescent moon shape on a hill. From there it was not far to the excellent museum, where many of the treasures found in the area were exhibited. Among these treasures were several golden 👑 crowns, and other gold artifacts, because of these treasures, Gyeongju has the nickname The Golden City.     Bus to Busan

    Today, I took the Intercity Bus to Busan, where I used the Metro to get to the Train Station, because right next to it was the Hotel where I will be staying for three more Nights. Afterwards I will wave goodbye to South Korea (For now) and continue on to Taiwan. But back to the present, three more days to enjoy in beautiful Busan. I love the vibe of the town. After checking in, I went to the post office to buy a carton and inquire about the cost to send my Souvenirs and Mementos back home on my final day. I'd rather pay 35€ EMS cost than carrying the additional weight and volume for the remaining three months. I also asked about post cards, but they did not have any with motives, just blank ones. However, they were super helpful in pointing me towards a place where I could find them, they also printed me a map 😀 That's the amazing Korean Service Culture. The place was a cafe called Good Ol' day's and it offered the best cafe latte I had in all my time here, it had a perfect crema, the staff even drew art with milk and it almost lasted till the last sip, simply amazing, I think I will go there again in the next few days. The main attraction of the cafe however, was them offering a post card service... I have to tell you that sending postcards isn't a thing in Korea as it is in the traditional european tourist destinations, it is very hard to find a shop selling them, maybe museum shops, but they were usually expensive and very artsy, with drawn motifs instead of a real picture. This cafe however had a wall full of Postcards for you to choose, and they offered everything needed, like stamps, decoration and the pencils to write them.     Busan, the bustling beauty

    I started the day early and refreshed with a surprisingly tasty Korean breakfast, then headed right to Gamcheon Cultural Village, a venue that they call the Machu Picchu of Korea, it certainly had a South American flair. There were a dozen shops and I spent big on a bunch of beautiful made in Korea souvenirs. People were queuing for a few great photo opportunities. Afterwards I spent time at my new favourite Café again, wrote more postcards and then decided to visit Busan Tower in Yongdusan Park. Once on top I enjoyed the 360 degree panorama and waited for the sun to set. While waiting, I was suddenly greeted by a very familiar face, it was Conor, that I met many days ago in Sokcho, while hiking Seoraksan... it's funny how the world can be so small sometimes. We had a good time experiencing the tower exhibitions together and said our farewells again, once we were done. Afterwards I enjoyed the vibes of the city lights at night again, Busan is a bustling and beautiful town, I enjoy it quite a lot. Let's see what we can explore tomorrow 😉

    Meetings and Farewells

    Today was one of these rare and special days, where you have great interactions that put a smile on your face. It started slowly, I slept a bit longer and had to walk the emergency stairs down (and afterwards up again) from the 11th Floor. The two elevators were so overused that waiting for my ride to come would have cost too much time. Time I did not have if I wanted to catch my breakfast in time. Afterwards I grabbed the first Bus to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple and enjoyed the breathtaking temple grounds near the sea. The last temple I visit in beautiful Korea. Next, I decided to visit the Busan X the Sky Observatory on level 100 of the Haeundae LCT the Sharp building which is the second highest in the country. It offered some excellent views and a Starbucks, where I grabbed a coffee just to brag that I had one in the highest Starbucks in the world. (I suppose in a building, because there is probably a starbucks in the himalayas) The coffee obviously could not compare to my Good Ol' Days Café Latte, I will definitely grab a final one there tomorrow before I fly to Taipei. When I left the building, I was strolling along the beach towards Marine City where I was asked to take a picture by someone near the Haeundae Sign, I helped out, got one taken from me in return, and immediately after was asked by someone else if I would take a photo for him.
