We booked this trip on February 5th after the difficult decision of where to go was solved by literally spinning the globe lol! First it was Algiers -nope- then Toronto - nope- and finally Portugal! So when booking the flights, we realized that it was a 13 hour layover in Madrid. The airline would not allow an extended layover for a couple days, so we decided to just go to Madrid and figure out the rest from there. So we booked the flights with American Airline miles. This gives us extra legroom and access to the airline lounge in Dallas.
Two days before our flight, we get an email from American that they expect a really bad storm to interfere with flights on Tuesday and Wednesday. So Monday morning we decided to call and change our flight from 12:38 pm to 6:20 am ugh! We didn’t think our 12:38 flight would make it if de-icing all day delayed flights. As it turned out, we either would have been very close or missed the Madrid flight. I got a notice front the airline at 4:54- welcome to DFW when boarding for our Madrid flight started at 4:30!!
Great seats! Not the pods but preferred which at the bulk head was the best! Seats also reclined an extra couple of inches. We both slept 4-5 hours.
Taxi has a standard set rate of 33euros from airport to the city. The boutique hotel we chose is wonderful!
Wonderful little boutique hotel that we booked, is right in the center of all museums, plazas, cathedrals and many, many tourist and local restaurants and shops. We can pretty much walk to all attractions within 2-30 minutes.
We had lunch at our hotel which was really our breakfast after a nap and shower at around 2:30. Jillian called at her regular time (7:45 am EST) and woke us up. Good thing because sleep really felt good at that time. Nice little restaurant with a glass floor. Beneath our chairs you can see the remains of an old city wall from the 12th century! The building was built in mid-late 1800’s.
For brunch, I had eggs and ham (prosciutto) over potatoes which turned out to be fries. Really tasty! Rod had ham croquettes which are very popular here. With a little mustard, he really enjoyed them.
We headed outside to walk the streets around us. No streets are straight but that is to be expected when heading up to Plaza Mayor, a central and very large square. At the center is a large statue of horse and rider. We didn’t take an up close look but will another day. Surrounding the plaza under all the columns are little shops and restaurants….even a shop dedicated to the little ducks jeep owners gift each other!!
Heading back to the hotel we had passed an Irish pub earlier that we decided to stop in for a beer. A young couple from England invited up to sit and visit with them and another young traveler they had just met also from England. Lydia was from Spain so was our temporary translator with the bartender. Josh and Lydia had been classical ballerinas from age 3 and lived away from their families from age 11. They met in Bulgaria while dancing and after several injuries decided to quit and both went to school to become nurses. Both work in the ER. They were in Madrid to meet her brother and celebrate her 30th birthday. It was a very nice little encounter!
We meandered back down our street but decided to have one more bite to eat. It’s 7:15 pm by now. So tapas are the popular thing here and a must do. We had artichoke with ham, shrimp in garlic butter, battered and fried calamari, mixed croquettes-so smooth and creamy! And a spinach omelet with eel. All are very small plates so although it sounds like a lot, it was a good sampling.
It’s been a great first day! Weather is in the 40’s with a slight breeze. So I’m glad I we brought appropriate clothing. Also we have decided to stay her until Sunday. Then head off to Toledo and maybe rent a car and go the coast or take the train somewhere else.

Cooking class đđđ
13. helmikuuta, Espanja â
âïž 8 °C
We had a slow start this morning. Rod was up from midnight to 4 - just couldn’t sleep. On the other hand, I was up and down to use the bathroom but was out each time immediately. So at least one of us had a good night!!
Our cooking class for paella and tapas started at 11 am. So at 10 we took a 15 minute taxi ride to Chef Loleo kitchen. We were 30 minutes early and since we didn’t have time for breakfast, we found a grocery store/market where we purchased bread and Iberian jambom- like prosciutto but better (as per Loleo). Then we found a table and chairs to sit and eat. Not exactly ideal but it worked :-).
Loleo greeted us with a glass of wine in her beautiful space: private dining room for 20 and her spacious white kitchen. After washing our hands, we started by making a Russian salad: basically a very good potato salad. I didn’t realize you cook potatoes with skin on to retain flavor. Also you always start cooking veggies in boiling water to retain flavor and meats/bone broth in cold water to pull out flavor and nutrients. We also added a hard boiled egg, pickled vegetables and tuna (packed in oil from a can!) it was very good! The round mold made for a very nice presentation!
Tapas gets the name from people who would put a cover or ‘lid’ on the top of a glass of wine to prevent dust and bugs from falling into it. They started to put a piece of bread with some kind of delicacy on the plate and ‘tapas’ as we now know it was born.
We made croquettes that were so creamy, it was like silk on your tongue! The trick was to continue cooking the rue until it was smooth and silky - it slides off the spatula when ready. Then when forming the croquettes, you use two spoons to make a quenelle. Then dip in eggs and rolls in crumbs. Deep fry in olive oil and there you have a delicious croquette! They can be made from seafood, oxtail, mushroom, left over chicken, beef or even turkey. đđ
Next, Loleo started exposing the truth about paella - a special rice - never long grain as it does not absorb liquids. Only three items: rice, vegetables, seafood or meat - finely chopped and not very much. There is a specific pan they use although it doesn’t much matter as long as the rice and broth do not come up higher than an inch or so. Once all ingredients added, paella is cooked on stove for 8 minutes, into a hot over for 8 mins, one minute on stove to get a crust on the bottom of the pan and 10 minutes resting. NEVER stir the rice. It breaks the body of the rice. A good paella has an even amount of crusty rice from the bottom and softer rice from the top.
This dish was followed by steamed cod and veggies. Cod is very tender so after veggies were cooked, the cod was placed on top of the veggies. The kernel on the toothpick was cayenne. Too hot if left in. The toothpick ensures you can pull out the pepper before eating. Fish was steamed about 10 minutes. Amazing!!
So background on cod…I’m not sure why this merchant decided cod would be a good idea, maybe a change of diet, well… the merchant didn’t understand the language of the seller well and while he thought he was ordering 10 lbs, he received 10 tonnes. As it was Lent and Catholics were not allowed meat or fish, as the story goes, the merchant went to the pope and asked that cod be allowed to be eaten plus a little $$ encouragement , the pope agreed and voila fish was allowed during lent đ
Loleo had been in the wine marketing industry before taking her training to be a chef in Madrid. So she has an extensive knowledge of the wine industry. The French wine industry needed more fermentation to make their wine. Spain could produce a wine with good fermentation but then the flavor was too strong. So the French would buy the Spanish wine and blend it to make a palatable wine đ·.
Loleo gave us suggestions for great restaurants in another area of the city not so touristy. Sure to be a great gastronomy adventure! She also suggested taking the train to the south of Spain through Cordoba and Seville. Then rent a car to go along the coast….
We headed back to the hotel via metro. Stopped at a coffee shop for a croissant and figure out exactly where we were lol!
Pretty great day!

Lansers on the Loose ...Wow! I love all the things you learned about the origins of tapas and cooking paella and differences between French and Spanish wine industries! Also, would highly concur that you should head south towards Seville! We didn't get to Cordoba ... went to Cadiz instead ... but Ronda was a highlight!! The gorge is incredible!! And we rented a car and drove from Malaga (also lovely) towards Valencia and stayed in L'Albir! It was heavenly! It sounds like you're in for a fabulous adventure!! Looking forward to following along! âšïžâšïžâšïž

MatkaajaThanks for the encouragement â„ïžâ„ïž. We had thought to go to Toledo and rent a car from there but Loleo said that taking the train from Madrid south would save us several hours of pointless driving. So good to have confirmation!

Tour?? And the unexpected!
14. helmikuuta, Espanja â
âïž 15 °C
We booked a city tour with two options: modern tour and historical tour. It started at 10 so we booked a breakfast at the hotel for 8:30. It was a very nice surprise! Lots of options but they also offered fried eggs and toast. Fancy breakfasts are a write off for me. My belly is so sensitive in the morning that any deviation can cause issues an hour later. But for Rod it’s a nice opportunity to try something more.
Once we finally got out the door to the tour, we were a few minutes behind. We weren’t sure how it worked but it started at 10. So we hopped in a taxi instead of trying to figure out the metro and got to the bus in plenty of time. However, I really needed to pee and since the tour buses ran every 15 minutes, we decided to head over to the public bathroom. Well that was more than disgust đ€ą!!! So we went over to Starbucks.
While I was I the bathroom, someone knocked on the door. So when I came out I saw this woman standing and waiting at a bar seating area, I asked if she was waiting for the bathroom. She wasn’t but we got into a conversation that led to meeting her husband, to sitting outside Starbucks to visit, to going on the first tour, to lunch, then the second tour and even meeting up later to have dinner together!
Tour was from GetYourGuide for $26 each. So it wasn’t crazy waste of money but we won’t used this tour group again. The audio didn’t line up with the monuments and unless there was a red traffic light, it was a steady drive by. Going past buildings is one thing but you need a few moments to see a fountain /statue. They mentioned cathedrals but oops none in sight. There is an Arch they compare to the one in Paris, Arc de Triomphe, but it was on a second pass down that street that we actually saw it. Plus the numbers on the map didn’t match the tour audio. But!! We had a great visit with our new friends, the weather was nice and we saw the city!
Glen and Nereda are from a town near Brisbane. Same age as Rod with two girls 41 and 43. Married 45 years. We had such a great time!
For dinner? Octopus was the winner. Rod had cod and Nereda had pork. I had oxtail that I thoroughly enjoyed! Glen had the lobster that we all agreed was exceptional!
Another great day!

Lazy Day!
15. helmikuuta, Espanja â
âïž 15 °C
Very lazy day. With the black out / sound proofing of this room we didn’t wake up until 9:53 am!! I am sure that has happened since I was a teenager! Rod watched his YouTube shorts as I checked out tours - nothing available today or was excessively expensive - checked out trains to Toledo, which I did book for Monday morning, did my Bible study, balanced our checkbook, checked in with the kids, watched tv and eventually got showered and dressed to go out to eat at 2 pm.
Loleo, our chef from the other day, had explained the eating schedule of the Spaniards … toast or fruit at 7 am, coffee and croissant at 11 or 12, large/main meal at 2 pm, coffee and snack at 6 pm , tapas at 10 pm. However as I write this, home is 7 hours behind us. So maybe we just have not adjusted to time zone here.
When we finally get out to find a place to eat, so is EVERYONE else!! It took us a bit of walking to find a place that didn’t have customers standing in line outside the cafes/bars/restaurants. The one we did get into was upstairs and evidently patronized by locals. Food was pretty good. However tipping is not expected nor mandatory but for the second time, the waiter expected a tip. They tap on the tin plate they bring the check on. I looked into when we got back. That won’t happen again. Rather rude!
Rod was feeling a little of a scratchy throat and had gotten a chill the night before from sitting outside for dinner. So it was good we just stayed in all day. Around 6 we went down to the hotel restaurant and got a plate of Iberian jambon - Spanish ham- bread and tea pot - they actually gave me a small kettle to boil water for tea. So we went and watched a movie.
Around 10 pm we headed out to a cafe and had two tapas: smoked salmon and avocado toast and toast with grated tomatoes with garlic, glass of wine and cheesecake and carrot cake for dessert. Came back and watched another movie and here it is 2 am - ridiculous!!
Take care and love to all♥ïž♥ïžLue lisÀÀ

Lansers on the Loose ...Ha ha ...the joys of time changes! We also experienced the line ups at 2pm. And then, after that, you are lucky to find anything open before 6pm!! It's nice to have a lazy day! Hopefully Rod feels better soon!

Sunday tasks and Crypt/Cathedral
16. helmikuuta, Espanja â
âïž 18 °C
Today was a day of tasks and a last ditch effort to go inside at least one history site! We accomplished both!! We started with a very nice breakfast at our hotel. They offer a great selection of sliced meats, cheeses, yogurt w/toppings, cereal, and toast as well as eggs /bacon/sausage, coffee, tea or juice for 13Euros. Then off to the main train station to figure out how to get where we need to go tomorrow with our luggage.
Four blocks to metro/subway, three stops to the central train station. Then it was a series of small errors to find our way to the out of town trains. Best thing we found along the way was a charger that attaches by magnet in the outer case of my cellphone. So it can charge en route! Once we got things somewhat figured out, we headed back to the hotel. We had purchased a 10 ride metro ticket for 6euros when we arrived in Spain. We can both ride on the same ticket. So far we’ve used 6 rides.
Once back at the hotel, we packed up the dirty clothes and went off to find a laundromat. It was a ten minute walk. 5 euros to wash - includes detergent, softer and oxygen- not sure what that’s all about - but 30 minutes later it was ready for the dryer. Another 34 minutes and laundry was done. Yes I mixed jeans with shirts and underwear and socks ! That’s typically totally against my grain but gotta do what you gotta do lol! While waiting for it to do its thing, we got coffee and a snack from a local coffee shop. This laundromat was right I the square where they have a Sunday market - no food just all kinds of clothing, jewelry and artwork.
Once ‘home’ again, headed in the opposite direction to visit the crypt and cathedral. The palace was closed.
Crypt was disappointing in that the dates of the deceased were from the last 30 years or so. The side chapels had historical importance but nothing in the main area.
The cathedral was beautiful but not as ornate as I would have expected.
We headed back down side streets where we stopped at a restaurant for dinner. This time we had smoked salmon with cucumbers, radishes and chopped dill pickles. And roasted chicken and potatoes. Both were delicious and not terribly adventurous but that can wait for another day!

Toledo

Today we arrived in Toledo. Our practice run yesterday definitely made today easier. We still made a few wrong turns at the train station but we had plenty of time to have breakfast at the terminal.
I forgot to mention a few things as just quick notes. Banos is a much needed word! Bathroom / toilets! I am please to confirm that so far all the bathrooms in restaurants and even the train station have been clean and all regular toilets. No holes in the floor!! Hopefully that is consistent through out the country and our travels! Also I definitely brought the correct coat. Many people have the same type as me!
We have discovered that this really is a great time to visit. March is considered high tourist time as summer can get as hot as 48C =impossibly đ„” hot! Everyone heads to the coastal towns to survive! And return in late August or September.
Once we arrived in Toledo we took a taxi. 5 euros and a 500 ft incline, we arrived at our hotel. Another great location! Easy access to the plaza for our first tour.
This is a UNESCO world heritage city stuck in the 16th century when the capital of Spain moved from Toledo to Madrid. The three factions of Arabs,’ Jews and Christians all have a stake in the history’s here. Buildings often have the structure of a mosque, used as a church and decoration inside of the Jews. For several hundred years they coexisted very peacefully. However at the end of it, the Jewish quarter was completely flattened and the Jews were forced to either convert to Catholicism or be killed. So some families chose to convert. One such family had a coat of arms created and is still hangs in the building they built as a church. It has the structure of a mosque used as a church. But now used as a discotheque. University also uses it to display art.
The next tour we took was supposed o underground. After an hour and no underground, we just continued down the path to the cathedral when the leader turned the corner. And what a cathedral it turned out to be. I think we just say the most remarkable cathedral ever!
Every inch of this cathedral is carved! Absolutely incredible! Pictured can’t do it justice. The building has columns rising up 300 feet! It is massive!
We finished off the night with dinner at a very nice restaurant. Croquettes are a specialty here in Spain and here I thought it was a Dutch treat! Tonight Rod had a deer and manchego cheese and an oxtail croquette. I had a burger. I know really lame but their options were really limited because the main menu was not available until 8 pm and it was only 6. I have belly issues when I eat too much rich food and I have to take lactaid for any dairy. So choices are limited. Rod also had apple pie that has a layer of chopped almonds under the layer of apples. The southern part of Spain and particularly Toledo is know for marzipan-almonds.
This is the origin of Toledo steel. 90% of all the swords used in lord of the rings, the hobbit and game of thrones all were made from Toledo steel!
So that’s it for today. We will take the train back to Madrid and catch a high speed one to Cordoba tomorrow. Not sure if we will stay there or continue on to Seville.
Love to all!Lue lisÀÀ

Off to the South of Spain
18. helmikuuta, Espanja â
âïž 17 °C
We started off in Toledo after a good night rest. Inexpensive hotel in the heart of Toledo, exceptionally clean, small room but good bed, friendly staff and a great stay! Also I forgot to note that the streets are incredibly narrow and meander all over. Like Pittsburgh, that’s either going up, down or around a corner. Larger vans have quite a challenge to navigate through. You have to be on continual watch for a vehicle coming and find an alcove to get out of the way or suck in your belly to avoid being hit!! This is a UNESCO world heritage site and they work very hard at keeping it alive as it was in the 16th century!
We took the train back to Madrid because there are no high-speed trains that go directly from Toledo down to the south of Spain. Once in Madrid, we got on a train going to Cordorba. (We cancelled the train tickets to Seville.) However, the Scottish fellow that sat with us was heading down to Málaga. He sang the praises of this city so we decided to extend our ticket while on the train to go all the way down to Málaga instead of stopping in Cordoba. Funny thing was that I had made a suggested schedule on Sunday and it actually had us going down to Málaga today anyways!
The high speed train only took a total of 3 hrs to get all the way down to the south of Spain from Madrid - center of Spain. We passed olive trees, areas where pigs roam free to eat acorns that flavors the meat to make ‘Iberian’ ham. We didn’t see almond trees but they are plentiful here and this southern area all the way from Toledo is known for almonds - marzipan!
Chris, the Scot, retired to Cortes de la Frontera. It’s a village of 1200 several km from Malaga in the mountains. The town was painted all blue for the opening shot of the Smurf movie!! The theatre company offered to paint all buildings back to white but the town decided to leave it blue! Chris has a sister married to a Spaniard and they live in Malaga. He says within their community of 1200, there are expats from many different countries!!
Once in Malaga, we found a catamaran tour that started in 30 mins. We ran down to the pier and had a relaxing cruise around the harbor for an hour. So good to be here at a lower tourist time. Otherwise the boat would have been packed. Next month it starts.
We walked through a park that separates the main roadway from the pier. There were various statues every 100 feet or so. Very nice!
On our way back to the hotel, we wandered through the many interconnected streets. We stopped at an Italian restaurant for dinner. I think they allowed us to dine without reservations due to it being only 6 pm and not later when the real dinner hour starts (8-10pm).
Kelly, our server from Venezuela, started us with fresh bread and a glass of wine. Rod is enjoying the whites this trip. I prefer red. Then instead of a separate plate for the oil for dipping, the plate that had our napkin and utensils was meant for the dual purpose of dipping olive oil. We shared octopus salad and excellent fresh tagliatelle pasta with mushroom sauce. Kelly treated us with some limoncello- my personal favorite!
Feeling quite stuffed and tired from the day we headed back the hotel to relax and watch movie. Around 9 we headed out again.
Also at this time, there are celebrations like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Small groups of people in matching costumes would pass with some beating on a drum. Each group had its own style of costume. This continued till about midnight. We saw four of them.
We are on the northern edge of the historic section. So there are lots of narrow streets and historic sites near us. Lots of shops, pubs, restaurants and many more English signs than in Madrid. We went back to the Roman amphitheater that we had passed earlier and found a rooftop bar nearby from which to enjoy the view with a final glass of wine.Lue lisÀÀ

Such a great day! We started with breakfast at a place that the front desk clerk recommended last night. It was ok but nothing of note. It really only got better!
We had looked up ‘three perfect days in Malaga. There were suggestions for Picasso’s museum and an automobile/fashion museum. However I saw a Picasso museum in Brugge Belgium but I wasn’t a fan. And we aren’t really into cars regarding if they are vintage or not. So we went onto the next suggestion of visiting the Alcazaba fortress.
We stopped at the interpretive center before heading up to the fortress. The Roman Amphitheater was at and below ground level. It was really cool!! We met a lovely elderly couple from Belgium at the top. We visited briefly before having a drink at the bar. Great view from the top! Wonderful wine and olives!
Once we got down, we didn’t book a tapas tour but decided to do our own. So Rod said we would stop at the bar we came to. It turned out to be an oyster bar. Oh so good!! We had six oysters and then smoked eel!! Maybe the best we’ve ever had đ. They paired it with caramelized onions and soy sauce. So so good! Along with great white wine!
There are always homeless asking for money. So when we came upon a fellow doing caricatures, we decided to stop and have ours done lol! Better to pay someone doing something than just giving someone money. So 20 mins later, it was completed lol! Fellow was China. He’d travelled extensively. So not so sure he fits the ‘homeless’ status but we supported someone working.
As we walked left then right, then left again we met a couple whom we spent the rest of the day with and have booked an excursion to Ronda with tomorrow….hopefully we have the same tour! They took us to a bar where they have barrels of beer, wine and vermouth. Wine was too sweet for me. So Rod mixed my sweet red with his dry white and it was pretty good! Then o had a glass of vermouth. It was really good! I had no idea I would even like it!! It almost tasted like Coca-Cola !
As it was close to 5;30 and neither of us are on the Spaniards schedule of eating at 10 pm we headed off for dinner. Joshna and ‘Bob’ (he has an Indian name that is difficult to pronounce. So he goes by Bob) were looking for Italian food. So we returned to the same restaurant we went to last night.
Great dinner and great conversation. The hostess basically asked us to leave after 3 hours lol!
So we have booked a tour and another night in Malaga. We stopped at a grocery store to get bread and ham for breakfast. Water and snacks for the excursion. We have the taxi booked so we are ready for the morning.
As a bonus, the front desk clerk is working on a tourism degree. She is from Morocco and lives here in Malaga. Hannah speaks perfect English. She gave me her contact information. So when we are ready she will set up a tour from Marrakesh :-).

Ronda and Sentinel de las Bodegaa
20. helmikuuta, Espanja â

Rod did not sleep…at… all! I was rather restless and too warm but still managed several hours of sleep before our early alarm to catch a tour by 8:05 am.
Today we are off to Ronda where bull fighting originated in 1784. And to Sentinel de las Bodegas where the village is built into the rock hillside.
Our first stop in Ronda was to a cathedral/convent dedicated to Saint Teresa. Apparently dictator Franco kept Saint Teresa’s mummified hand for 40 years as his good luck charm. Another place has her arm ?!? So people like to go in to see it as it may bring them good luck.
Ronda boasts the first and largest bull fighting ring at 66 meter diameter. However it has the smallest capacity for spectators. They only have one bullfight per year; the first week of September. For this occasion, women dress up in traditional dress to honor the tradition.
Ernest Hemingway and Orsen Wells were both good friends of Pedro Romero, the person who started the bullfighting. However they didn’t like each other. So to respect both, the statues point away from each other.
Pedro participated in 5000 bullfights with no injuries!
There are 27 varieties of wine from this area. One was from a monastery that the barefoot monks made. Later they sold the monastery and the wine is still made there.
Ronda has a population of 34,000 and NO traffic lights. A bridge from 1785 separates the old historical are from the new. It needs repairs due to vehicle traffic. It has shifted.
The smaller Roman bridge down below in the valley is from 125 AD. No repairs required! Such amazing construction!
We walked around from new to old and old back to new. On our way up the opposite side of the 1785 bridge, there was a huge class of VPK kids … so cute! Someone called out ‘Liam’. So Spanish Liam’s are a source of entertainment also đ€Ł
We had a lunch of chicken satay with basmati rice, octopus - very tender, and croquettes- spinach, mushroom and something else. It was all really good!
When I came out of the restaurant rest room, Joshna and Bob had bumped into Rod. They did the Sentinel tour this morning and were about to have lunch and then the Ronda tour we should get back to Malaga about the same time. We both leave tomorrow so we hope to have a visit this evening.
Another 30 min drive to Sentinel de las Bodegas. Incredible architecture! We had the good fortune of entering a resident’s home to look at the architecture for 1euro. He and his wife raised 4 kids in this ‘tiny’ home!
We tried the sweet orange wine that Spain is also known for. It was sweet but not like brandy.
Bus ride back was an hour and 50 mins. We walked back to hotel. Somehow amongst all the little narrow streets, Rod gets it right numerous times that we just end up on the corner beside our hotel! When we got back, Joshna text a location for dinner.
Our phones and internet connection have been a source of frustration this trip. We had just moved to a new phone service that was supposed to have an international calling plan. Thank goodness I had the company’s phone number in my recent calls from setting it up. The agent told us that apparently we had already used whatever allowance we had. So we purchased additional time and headed off for dinner.
We had great tapas - a chef’s choice mixed plate of chicken wings, peppers, paella, crawfish and something else. Another order of salmon ceviche with avocado and mango and plate of octopus (very tender) over potatoes. A few drinks and great conversation ensued! Joshna and ‘Bob’ live in New Jersey just across the border from Philadelphia. So we will definitely spend time together in the US.
Once we got back to our room, it was time to book the train to Granada, book a flamenco show - recommended event thanks to a friend from Pittsburgh. They are moving to Spain in the summer and had a great visit here last fall. He provided various suggestions for touring and helped me secure a hotel in a recommended area!!
Another beautiful day completed! Thank you Lord for all you have provided!

Like on a game board where the goal is just have wonderful experiences and avoid the road bumps, we got the detour card. Today was pretty much a bust.
Rod wasn’t feeling well from the moment he got up. Lots of indigestion and his feet were really painful. And I got up thinking I’m finally at the end of my medication and I was feeling really well… not to be!
We got the 80 minute train to Granada and took a five minute taxi ride to the hotel. Rod was really miserable by now and just needed to get off his feet. The manager/owner was so gracious to get our room ready four hours early. I ran out to get a sandwich but it tasted nasty so I didn’t eat it. About an hour or so later I went out again to get a sandwich from another place and one bite I was done. By 4 pm I was not feeling well. I wasn’t sure if it was sympathy for Rod or my own real issues. I won’t bore you with details suffice to say that by 8 pm, By then Rod was feeling a little better having slept all day. I was really sick and only V relieved my distress. (Octopus from the night before.)
I had booked a flamenco dinner and dance experience for 6:45 pm. I decided to email and ask if we could reschedule for Saturday explaining that my husband had, oh yes!, food poisoning. They were so gracious to say yes!! So Saturday night we will go.
Our detour included missing all the great sites of Granada!! Before our room was ready we walked around for maybe 20 minutes. There is a university right behind the hotel. We walked around for a few minutes and then went down a few streets. Old town is very similar to other ‘old towns’ in that streets are narrow, curvy and intertwined making it challenging to remember all the left and rights!
The building where we are staying was built in 1886. They restored the building over Covid and the spacious apartments are a combination of old architecture with original floor tile and new stylish cabinets and finishes. Very comfortable and I have to say Spaniards are so clean!! Great place to take refuge during our time of distress.
I have limited photos for today so I am only posting our pics from the cathedral in Toledo. It was so impressive!Lue lisÀÀ

It was still a rough night being up every hour to drink a sip or two of chamomile tea and pee…. But thank you Lord for a settled belly! However my face was achy probably from retching so hard the night before! Rod is still dealing with a lot of burping and very low energy. We had eggs and toast in our apartment, showered and headed out for a bit of site seeing.
We had a good visit with the owner and his daughter as we were leaving the hotel. He had travelled extensively for work and they moved 14 times! They have two daughters. The 17 yr old we met was starting at maid/janitor work as he started her in the family business. He had worked corporate for 25 years and started this business just as Covid hit.
On the way to site seeing we stopped at a pharmacy and got a rehydration juice box. Tasted nasty but necessary to get our systems back on track.
Luis had suggested Ferdinand and Isabella tombs that were located a few blocks away. So we followed his advice into the cathedral (photos allowed) and then the building that housed the tombs. No photos are allowed in there.
Another absolutely spectacular cathedral! It would have to be if it was the king and queen of Spain’s cathedral!
It was good to walk around. And totally contrary to my belief that we do not even enter McDonalds, Burger King or Dunkin’ Donuts, or Starbucks when in Europe, a plain burger sounded just so good on a tender tummy. So we violated our rule and indulged in a McDonald’s burger. Mine completely plain, just burger and bun. Rods was a Big Mac without cheese and lettuce. Still relatively plain. We returned to the hotel to rest. We have a great event planned for tonight.
We took a taxi to Restaurante Flamenco Cueva La Rocia for a flamenco dinner and dance. The streets they have to navigate by car instead of horseback with all the tourists is something else!!
We were early so we walked down the street to get a view of Alhambra, the great Moorish palace. It is the #1 tourist site in Granada. You have to get tickets weeks to months in advance. Even without tickets you are free to walk the grounds. Disappointed to miss it but it is what it is!
We booked the early dinner and basically had the restaurant section to ourselves. It is built in a cave so they have various tunnels two for flamingo dancing one for dinner. We had a choice of appetizer entrée and dessert plus they gave us a tapa of crusty bread, avocado spread with an anchovy on top. We liked it although I know many don’t prefer anchovy. Anchovy, sardines, octopus, squid are all very popular here. Oxtail is traditional and one of my favorites. Gazpacho is also traditional and that was my appetizer. It was good but after being sick I didn’t want to have something too acidic. Rod had the hot vegetable soup which he preferred to mine. For entree, Rod had steak and I had oxtail. Both were really good. Dessert was leche /milk cake with whipped cream and flan like Rod’s mom used to make. Again both were delicious. All accompanied by a glass of red wine đ·
Since we had paid for dinner and show, we were led into the dance đ đș cave.
They gave us the first seats next to the performers: two men and a woman who provided music and singing and three dancers. This specific show is all spontaneous and improvised. You could see from the way the performers interacted that they would challenge each other to faster, slower, longer til the women had sweat on their brows! They tap and land so hard I was afraid of getting my toes stepped on lol! Very impressive! Their footwork was amazing!
In all a pretty good day considering our health challenges. Tomorrow is a travel day back to Madrid. We booked tickets for 11:13 am so we don’t have to be up crazy early.
Love to all đđLue lisÀÀ

Rod is still struggling with an upset belly and no energy. He was up most of the night. We did laundry at the hotel for free yesterday but we couldn’t figure out which option would be best to dry the clothes without shrinking everything. So the somewhat damp clothing was hung up around the apartment and dry by this morning.
With a breakfast of scrambled eggs, toast and tea, I got us packed up and apartment cleaned up the way I like to leave it, we checked out and walked to the train station a little more than a half mile away. We got a little confused because even though I have an eSIM card, our gps does not work well. So we asked two elderly gentlemen for assistance. They actually walked us to the station. And those boys could really walk!!
We are now sitting in the forward position on the train to Madrid. You never know when you book if it will be forward or back facing seat. You can see the seat back but you don’t know which direction the train will be traveling. There were only 6 seats left so options were limited. This is the slow train as Granada is not on the fast track route. So today is 3 hrs and 32 mins.
We have booked the same hotel as our previous visit. We know the metro and how to get to the hotel as well as the surrounding area. Having not been well the last couple days, we wanted something familiar. There are still so many sites to see and hopefully get a good paella yet! We have been hesitant to order one after having taken the cooking class. Loleo told us what a true paella should have and as she explained most are made with tourist in mind, that is what we have seen.
Funny thing on the train. I used the bathroom / water closet đŸ. However as is typical for most European bathrooms, it can be a guessing game as to where the button is to flush the toilet. I seriously searched for it and could not find it. I finally went to Rod and asked him to quickly go find it lol! Didn’t want someone in there after me without having flushed!!đł He came back a moment later and explained it was down near the floor by the sink section with a label of WC on it. I had looked at this button but it was in an odd place and not near the toilet? So weird. Some engineer with another great idea đ€Ł
We went for a walk after we got checked in. On our way back we decided to stop for croquettes at the sister hotel/restaurant of our hotel. These were ham croquettes and were very good. We also enjoyed a glass of wine and olives. Best olives yet! We went and made a reservation at a very highly rated restaurant on Trip Advisor. It said that it was the best paella - this is according to tourists and not necessarily locals!
So at 7 pm we returned. Was it the best paella? Waiter recommended scallops, bread and seafood paella … and apparently was a very good salesman because several of the other tables also had the exact same meal!! The paella we made was better only because this one was too salty and I don’t think we were hungry enough. It was expensive compared to other dinners and not something we would return for. We stopped at ‘Guilty’ on our way back for a cookie as dessert. Nice end to a good day.
Rod is feeling much better ! So thankful!

Lansers on the Loose ...I had a similar experience somewhere trying to find the flush button! It was on the floor too. I've also had my hands covered in soap and then couldn't figure out how to turn on the tap!! đŹ someone came to my rescue and pointed to a floor buttom. đ„Ž

MatkaajaItâs like an escape room! Canât leave til you find the flush button lol!

Lansers on the Loose ...We struggled to find a good paella anywhere in Spain intelligence we got to San Sebastian and learned that paella originated in the Catalonia region. So, you might need to head that direction to get an original (not touristy) paella!

MatkaajaYou are likely correct. Also the private chef we met when we first arrived suggested another area of the city, Ibiza. So we will try that out. This is our last day in Spain. So one more try đ

Today was relaxing. We had breakfast at the hotel. For 13E it’s a good option. Plus I get fried eggs the way I like them but usually can’t find. Rod ordered sausage this morning. Who knew a hot dog would be the Spanish version of a breakfast sausage lol!
We bought another metro pass. 6.6E for 10 rides. We went up 4 stops to find the indoor Mercado de la Valleheos (Mercado is market.) It sounded wonderful where you can buy fresh fruit, meat, fish, vegetables etc or from one of the prepared food vendors. However it was Monday and obviously a down day! Such a bummer! We walked back to metro and stopped for a chicken and sauce empanada. There were many choices but many with cheese. It was pretty good. And we also stopped for a chocolate croissant- or rather Rod supported my craving lol!
On our way back through the metro, they had a museum for the underground sewer system. There was an exposed tunnel that was the remains of the Roman sewer system. Unfortunately it was closed as well. We have really tried to get an underground tour but very few exist.
Rod went back to the hotel while I stopped by the restaurant where I had had the oxtail stew Cordoba style. I was using my ‘translate’ app to have a conversation with the host. He finally asked what I was using and downloaded the app also lol! I really needed a meal and Rod wasn’t interested in food. So I took the meal to go. The restaurant is just a block from our hotel. The stew was delicious! They use ginger and cloves in the gravy. Unusual but so good!
At 5:30 pm we headed over the gathering point to meet our tour guide and the rest of the group. 10 in total. All of us from the US plus a dad and daughter from Paris.
Dani started the tour with tapa and drink at Casa Labra. We learned that the salt cod was soaked for 2 days before using in a recipe. It was excellent! Best cod we’ve ever had đ. Vermouth on tap is also a tradition. They mix it with grappa and water. I think it tastes like Coca-Cola. We also tried the specialty local cheese manchego which is a mild goat? cheese. Salut!
El Escarpin was our second stop. Here we had the traditional Spanish omelette. It had potatoes, peppers, zucchini, carrots and peas. Then they sprinkle a dusting of chorizo on top to give it that reddish tinge of color. They paired this with their local cider. They have a particular way of pouring - which I think they needed a little more practice or maybe we need to try doing it to see how difficult it really is lol! You only get a two or three ounces and have to down it in one shot! Salut!!
We walked down past the palace which we had been at last week. The palace has somewhere between 2800 and 3200 rooms! No one has been able to confirm the number. Plus there would have been hidden passages and rooms! Beautiful at night.
We walked to a square that has a Muslim 15th century building, a 16th and 17th century building hosting that era’s architecture. Pretty cool!
Our next tapa stop was Meson del champinon. The mushrooms are stuffed with chorizo and sauce is sunflower oil, garlic and parsley. Delicious đ We also had passing peppers roasted and salted. Not very hot. We’d had them before in Malaga and liked them. The drink here was a type of sangria - cheap red wine mixed the Fanta lemon đ. So good!! They like to drink lots but not get inebriated. This establishment created this amazing tapa!
Our last stop was Casa El Abuelo. Here we had the original owner’s creation of garlicky shrimp. I’m thinking ‘what’s so special about garlicky shrimp and the we had some! It reminded us of escargot except they seldom if ever use butter.
Spain produces 60% of all olive oil. They export to Italy. If the label said packaged in Italy, it was produced in Spain.
We also had a great ham croquette and sliced tomato either olive oil and garlic. Dipping homemade bread in the oil from the tomatoes or the shrimp is a must do!!
Here we had ‘grandfather’s’ wine. A drier wine than the drop a bit of honey in to sweeten. It was sweeter than we normally enjoy, but it was a good end to a wonderful tour.
Favorites for the night: Rod - cod and mushrooms. Barb - mushrooms and garlic. The summer drink- of wine and lemon was the best.
History is always interesting but too much to remember. With Toledo being the capitol until Charles II moved it to Madrid in 16th century, Madrid was just a small village outside the main fortress with a daily market. One of the monarchs would have cathedrals torn down and replaced with grass to create a square for people to gather. The graves under the cathedrals were lost.
The sculptor and Galileo were friends and the sculptor had a problem he needed help with. The stallion rising up on his hind legs had a problem with getting it to stay up. Galileo determined that if the front of the sculpture was hollow and distributing all the weight in the back legs and tail by forming a triangle, the sculpture would stand up. The tail is a little longer than reality but required for the correct dimensions.
One thing we did notice I was that a lot of places play American music. And other than street musicians looking for donations, none of the bars had live music. Possibly because the bars are so small and a band would take up valuable customer space.
It was a beautiful evening. Weather in Spain has been around 40-45-60 F depending on the day. But the cooler weather with a jacket worked well. Definitely a good time to be here!
We had a 20 minute walk back to our hotel. Time to get packed and ready for flight home tomorrow!Lue lisÀÀ

We had a reasonable flight time of 11:13 am. So we left the hotel at 8 am by taxi. I didn’t know that the Madrid airport is the second largest coming in behind Charles deGaul in Paris. For being so large and busy security and passport control was very efficient. We headed up to the lounge to have breakfast and wait for our flight time. We used up our remaining euros by purchasing Spanish candy for the kids and a some snacks for the flight. We always gift our flight attendants with a bag of Lindt mixed chocolates is honor of Lyndsey’s best friend, Cecy, who is an international flight attendant with United. Sometimes but not always, they treat us back with a free glass of wine and the toiletry bags.
Rod didn’t want anything since his belly has been such a mess so they gave me not one but two little bottles of red wine lol! It was half way through the flight so time to drink and sleep it off lol!
So the flight is seven hours. As I got up to use the bathroom, I discovered that our back section of the plane is pretty much empty! Every row has a max of two people. Most are only one and most are stretched out on all three seats sleeping. So although we don’t have ‘preferred’ seating, we certainly are not cramped for space.
Good flight to Miami with 3 hours left to get to Pittsburgh!
We had dinner at Chili’s. Good to have a good old American burger. We enjoyed our time in Spain but not the food so much.
Flight was delayed 90 minutes after we had boarded. However the pilot made up 45 minutes flying up to Pittsburgh. After being up for basically 24 hours, it was so good to get into our own bedsâșïž
Thank you Lord for safe travels!Lue lisÀÀ
