    The Tip

    We all piled into James’ car and drove firstly to the Croc Tent and then to the Tip for the obligatory photo (or 20) standing next to the sign saying “You are standing at the northernmost point of the Australian continent”.

    Couldn’t buy fresh bread at the Bam Bam Bakery as the baker had an accident and wouldn’t be back until Wednesday. Fortunately we managed to get a fresh loaf from the campground kiosk’s kitchen so were able to have hamburgers for a late lunch back at camp.    もっと詳しく

    Somerset

    Police pulled into the campground this morning telling us that a few cars had been broken into last night - we were safely locked up.

    Drove up towards Somerset and stopped at 2 WWII plane crash sites. On to Somerset to the point and memorial sites.

    Customs House

    Thursday Island

    8.00am we all boarded the MV Torres Magic ferry for the 1 hour and 10 minute trip to Thursday Island. We hadn’t booked a tour but once onshore we were approached by Mutty to be our guide at $40pp.

    He took us to Customs House, crayfish holding tanks (Annette bought a tail for their dinner), pointed out all the schools, the cemetery which included hundreds of Japanese graves (young men who died while diving for pearl shells - mostly unnamed graves with just a white post marking the graves). Wandered through the Green Hill fort which was constructed between 1891 and 1893 as part of the Australian defence in the lead up to Federation. It was erected in response to the British Russian scare of 1885.

    Once off our “bus tour” we had lunch at the Grand Hotel and walked the main road until it was time to catch the return ferry back to Seisia.    もっと詳しく

    Musgrave Roadhouse

    Long day of driving, about 550kms of mostly gravel and corrugated roads.

    Unpowered camping out the back of the roadhouse with about 10 resident freshies (and many turtles) in the creek.

    Last supper at the camp kitchen

    Mareeba

    After the last bit of dirt road and then winding roads we arrived in Mareeba - much cooler here. After refuelling in Mount Molloy Charlie noticed a tinking sound that he associated with a leaky exhaust. So we stopped to investigate and found a hairline crack in the engine pipe. So after many phone calls to Toyota and other repairers we decided it was best to get to Cairns to replace the pipe.

    Sadly this would be our last night with Annette and James and enjoyed spaghetti bolognaise as our last supper. 😢    もっと詳しく

    Cairns

    Looks like we will be here longer than we thought so the only remedy is to find a nice hotel to stay at. We have booked into the Ingenia Caravan park (for 1 night) which is huge but extremely well equipped and maintained - busy due to school holidays.

    For the next 5 nights we are at the Hilton on the Esplanade.

    Checked into our room around lunchtime on Sunday, dinner at Ollie’s on The Waterfront then a soaking bath - bliss!

    Monday and Tuesday we explore Cairns on foot and by Tuesday afternoon the car is fixed!    もっと詳しく

    Kuranda

    A day trip to Kuranda - lots of tourists due to school holidays and the P&O Pacific Encounter cruise ship being in town. The road up was slow due to stop and go sections where they are still repairing the road from the landslides from December 2023.

    Walked into the Barron Gorge Falls lookout and the Wright lookout with distant views of Cairns. Lunch and window shopping - more stores seemed to be open this visit, 2 years ago it was very quiet.

    At 4pm the ship departed with lots of onlookers, but the fun continued on board with the flying fox as seen in the attached video.    もっと詳しく

    Millstream Falls

    After another hearty breakfast and a quick last minute shop we are back on the road.

    Travelled south west on the Gillies Range Road, a very picturesque green valley then a very winding road that climbs up to 882m above sea level.

    Richmond

    A new town for us to visit on the Flinders Highway whose catch cry is “You’ll Dig Richmond”. Richmond is a town on the Flinders River (the longest river in QLD) known for its lake, fossils and gold mining heritage. Cattle farming and tourism are the biggest industries in the shire.

    On our arrival we did the heritage walk around the town, viewing the signs depicting yesteryear. Visited the replica of Cambridge Downs homestead and Kronosaurus Korner which is reportedly the most complete marine fossil and dinosaur collection in the world with 1500 specimens which covered Richmond over 100 million years ago.

    We have camped on man made Lake Fred Tritton and the skies are clear and weather is mild.

    Mt Isa

    Interesting stay in Mt Isa - 2 people had their wallets and car keys stolen from the campground at around 4pm - the thieves were back at about 3pm so a bit of shouting with campers on patrol.

    Next day visited the fascinating underground hospital built after the bombing of Darwin in 1942, when there was a real fear that Mount Isa with its rich mineral resources would be next. Given that Darwin Hospital was also bombed, there was also genuine concern for Mount Isa Hospital. This prompted a discussion between the then regional District Hospital Director and Superintendent of the mines. Over a period of 15 weeks, miners drilled, blasted and mucked out a series of four timbered tunnels into the side of the hill. Three run parallel to each other and the fourth intersects them, creating a capital E shape. These determined miners volunteered another four hours of gruelling labour after working eight hour shifts in the mine. The completed hospital included separate male, female and children’s wards plus a surgical theatre, delivery room and dedicated maternity ward – all fully stocked with linen and medical equipment.

    Thankfully Mt Isa was never bombed and the shelter became a temporary dormitory for nurses, a store room for hospital equipment before eventually closing in the 1960s. It was discovered in 1989 by some inquisitive kids.

    After 1926 with Mt Isa’s rapid population growth caused an acute housing shortage, so tent houses were built - one remains today as part of the museum.

    The Kuridala Hospital was purchased by the Mount Isa Hospital Committee for £400 for removal to the Mount Isa Hospital Reserve in July 1931 - it is now the Beth Anderson Museum.    もっと詳しく

    Leaving the deep red Selwyn Ranges and back into the flat arid desert that surrounds Mt Isa and 190kms further west and we’re at Camooweal for the night.

    Camooweal proudly declares itself ‘Gateway to the Northern Territory/Queensland’. The road from Mount Isa to the town, known to locals as ‘Tojo’s Highway’, was built during World War II with American funds and was originally designed as a link between the southern states and the theoretical ‘front line’ in the Northern Territory.もっと詳しく

    Sandover Highway - Austral Downs

    Crossing the border into NT and turning south on to the gravel Sandover Highway (this section is named as Austral Downs Rd). The Sandover is a 4x4 only track that generally runs south west to the tail end of the Plenty Highway and then on to the Stuart Highway about 68kms north of Alice Springs.

    Sandover Highway

    We arrive at an intersection which marks the official start of the Sandover Highway - so far we have only seen 2 cars both of which were station workers, however, we came across numerous wrecked cars. This part of the “highway” doesn’t look like it has been graded in quite a few years.

    Plenty Highway

    Very cold start to the day - 4 degrees - so breakfast by the campfire, then an inquisitive visitor (a wild horse) while we were packing up.

    Back on the track and finally after 700kms of dirt we reached the Plenty Highway (single lane bitumen) where we stopped for lunch.

    Exit the Plenty and then south onto the Stuart Highway - 130kph speed limit. Arrive at Alice Springs to top up all provisions in record time and then off to Trephina Gorge on the Ross Highway.    もっと詳しく

    Trephina Gorge

    We booked 3 nights at the Gorge campground within the Trephina Gorge Nature Reserve which is approximately 78kms south east of Alice Springs. Rhett, one of the camp hosts, greeted us on our arrival as we set up for our stay. The only facilities are a drop (smelly) toilet and tap water (no showers) but a very peaceful spot with lots of bird life.

    On our second day we moved campsites to avoid being downwind of the toilet. Before lunch we did the gorge walk which was a steep rocky climb and then down into the sandy riverbed.

    This afternoon we did the Panorama walk which was very steep but with spectacular 360 degree views of the gorge and surrounding valleys.    もっと詳しく

    On our way out of the gorge we stopped at the 300 year old ghost gum and then turned off on to the very rough and slow 4km side trip to the rock holes, where we walked up to a lookout.

    Corroboree Rock was the next point of interest - this is considered a sacred site to indigenous men. Jessie and Emily Gaps are situated further along to road and worth a quick stop.もっと詳しく

    Binns Track

    After our scenic route out of the East MacDonnells Ranges we had a quick lunch and topped up our fuel in Alice Springs. Then we began our slow trip home by avoiding the Stuart Highway and leaving Alice on the Roger Vale Drive (part of the Binns Track) due south past the airport towards the aboriginal community of Santa Teresa with its large wooden cross on the hill overlooking the small township.

    Once out of aboriginal lands we started to look for a campsite off the road which we found near the Train Hills on Allambi station. Lots of small grasshoppers and a few flies which disappeared once the temperature dropped. Once we set up and had the fire going we returned Samthony’s call and spoke to them for almost an hour about wedding preparations!    もっと詳しく

    Mac Clark Conservation Reserve

    Acacia peuce or waddywood is one of the rarest and most striking trees that grows in the Australian arid zone.

    Found in only three locations worldwide, it survives at Mac Clark on a stony wind-swept plain where the average rainfall is 150mm.

    The only other places it is found are Boulia and Birdsville in Queensland.

    About 1,000 mature trees are protected here and some are fenced to protect them from cattle.

    The site is subject to ongoing scientific research.

    Waddywood is an extremely hard wood that was traditionally used to make digging tools by the local Aboriginal people. The trees can grow to be 17m tall and live up to 500 years.    もっと詳しく
