    Agadir, Morocco Day 1

    May 16, 2022 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

After 26 hours of travel we made it to our destination! There were two flights, the first was from Detroit to France and then from France to Marrakech Morocco.
We drove from Marrakech to Agadir, passing through crowded towns filled with infrastructure unlike anything in the US.
We are staying at the Robinson Resort, it is very luxurious.
We went to EMAA (business school) today. It's culture and the way the students learn is much different than college in the United States. The students are men and women, and speak Arabic, French, American (some speak all 3)!The business school offers a bachelors degree (3 years) and a masters degree (5 years).
EMAA was hosting danish students so we all gathered at the university to get to know each other. Members from each school presented information about their home/school. We ended with ice breaker games/group activities.
The danish students are younger, most being 16-17 years old but they are all incredibly smart and mature. Prior to this I didn't know much about the danish culture, so this was a great experience.

    Morocco Day 2

    May 17, 2022 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

Today we started with by͏ going to EMAA, we picked up some of the students there and headed to a hospital in Agadir. Here we got to meet with some volunteer health care providers and talk to them about their experience here so far. The hospital was nothing like what we have in the united states. It was many small separate buildings, but not connected. For example, there was one building for pediatrics, a different for laboratory, and another for radiology. Upon entering, we walked past quite a large group of people waiting outside to be seen. There wasn't a waiting room indoors, so these people were sitting outside in the hot weather. It is very sad to see this, and I hope they get the care that they need very soon.
In the evening we shared tea with some of our Moroccan friends, sharing tea with their friends and family is something they do every day. You can tell this time makes them very close, I loved being apart of it. We watched an incredible sunset before heading back to the resort for the night.

    Morocco Day 3

    May 18, 2022 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

We started the day attending a conference at EMAA, its focus was research in management and economics. One speaker discussed what is needed to finance start-up businesses in emerging economies such as Morocco.
In the afternoon our group went to the Souk. It is a extremely large shop, similar to what flea markets are at home. It was filled with so much stuff from health and beauty products, to food, home supplies, jewelry and so much more. This was a bit overwhelming for me, I'm not a huge fan of shopping anyways but it was definitely a different experience.
In the evening we went on a tour of a new medical/education facility; Agadir SIM. The facility was very new, and had brand new simulation technology for medical students. It was state of the art, and super fun to get to see their learning tools up close.

We started off the day attending EMAA, and heard more talks about economics and development. In the evening we had some free time, so I went with a few U of M students to explore the city. I didn't know anyone before this trip, it has only been 4 days but I feel like we are a family already! Being fully immersed in a different culture has been incredible, and it has been fun to experience this with other students.Read more

    Morocco Day 5

    May 20, 2022 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

We started the day by going to Crocodile Park. Similar to a zoo, it had over 300 crocodiles! I really enjoyed this. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. He spoke Berber and taught us some words in his language!
In the afternoon we visited an orphanage. This was a surreal experience, and extremely emotional. There were 6-7 boys who currently live there, they were very young. They were singing with a volunteer when we got there, it was nice to see them enjoying their time with him. I cant imagine the pain and sadness they feel being without their family. The organization does a lot to try to get them into school so they can have a good education. It was a very eye opening experience, and one I won't forget.

    Morocco Day 6

    May 21, 2022 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Today some of the Moroccan students from EMAA took us o a tour of Agadir to show us places that they go to with their family's, friends and other students. The tour started by bringing us to the top of a mountain area which overlooks the whole city. It was an incredible view, I didn't realize the whole city sits on the shoreline. After this they took us to a large mosque, it was absolutely stunning. The design was unlike anything I've seen before. From the steps, to the doors, and the overall building design it was an incredible sight to see. We went down town for some food and shopping, and even got to ride on a boat for a short time. The students were so kind, and it was really nice being able to see their favorite spots in the town.
In the evening our group and the group of students/facility had dinner together at the Robinson. It has only been a few days but I feel like I have really got to know a lot of people!

I can't believe it is already our last day in Agadir, we have explored so much and met so many new people but I feel like we have so much more we could do! Going to soak in everything today and enjoy every second.
En’Dea, Deangelo and I went to the ocean early this morning. We hungout with some other students and then made our way back to the room. We got ready then went to the pier in Agadir. We went to a restaurant one of the Moroccan students recommended, and I had the best pizza!
Later in the evening we were on the board walk, there was so many people out during the sun set. The area was very welcoming and we had a lot of fun.

    Morocco Day 8

    May 23, 2022 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 72 °F

Today we traveled back to Marrakech. We had lunch on a rooftop in the city, it is extremely hot here! To get here our bus had to drive through some tight streets filled with shops and a lot of people, it was very busy and super fun to experience. The students brought us to a museum that displayed much of Marrakechs history, there was a room that was fully simulated and included things like mountainous terrain, astrology and other physical aspects of the city's transformation.
I can't believe how fast time has flew by this week, I wish we had more time!

    Morocco, heading home!

    May 24, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 59 °F

All I can say is wow, what a week. This trip was unbelievable, we did so much in such a short amount of time. This was my first time abroad, and I was a bit anxious at first but the second I got here all of these worries were gone. Being immersed in a different culture was nothing short of incredible. The Moroccan people are so kind, driven and hospitable. Everyone I met made me feel so welcome and at home. It is clear that their family/community is such an important part of their life. The students that we met are extremely smart, motivated and friendly. I will go into more detail in my paper for the class, but goodbye for now!Read more
