    I'm All Packed!

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 52 °F

We woke up very early in the morning to pack up for our trip upstate to Syracuse. We're driving up to see the New York State Fair so it should be a fun trip. I love when we have these weekend getaways but, because of the dogs, they don't happen as often as we'd like. I've got my Chewbacca backpack packed up and ready to go. I really like taking Chewie on trip with me. He seems to be a real attention grabber because I always see people looking at him.Read more

  • Ready to Leave

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 52 °F

We're just locking up and getting ready to get going. Even though we didn't pack our bags until this morning we still managed to make it out of the house very early.
Kathy likes to bring her pillow with her because she doesn't like to sleep with the hotel's pillows . She thinks that the pillows are dirty. I don't have a problem with them though. She only brings her pillow if we're driving though. If we're flying to our destination, her pillow stays home. That's understandable though. While flying, your a lot more limited in how much baggage you can bring with you. She does have a small travel pillow that she sleeps on the plane with. She uses that at the hotel too. It's quite small but she'd rather have that then use what the hotel offers.Read more

  • And We're Off!

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

We're going to drive to Syracuse in Kathy's car. I was a bit surprised by that because we usually rent a car for long rides to avoid putting so many miles on our cars. I guess she figures that Syracuse is not all that far of a drive and it will save us the cost of having to rent a vehicle. I don't mind it either way. I'm just happy that we're on our way. I love road trips!Read more

  • Crossing the Throgs Neck

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

In no time at all we were crossing the Throgs Neck Bridge. There's no traffic so far. I hope that trend continues.
The Throgs Neck Bridge connects the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx to the Bay Terrace area in Queens. The name “Throg’s Neck” or “Throggs Neck” is derived from John Throckmorton, who established his colony in the area in 1643. In referencing the land, both spellings of the name, with either one of two “G’s,” are accepted. However, the older and more established residents (pre-1960’s) generally tend to go for two “G’s.”
On the other hand, the Throgs Neck Bridge is definitely spelled with one “G” thanks to master builder, Robert Moses, who wanted to save money with sign costs. According to Bronx Historian, Lloyd Ultan, the name change meant less paint had to be used on all the signs.

  • Under the GWB

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

There was a bit of traffic to get on to the George Washington Bridge but once we were past the toll lanes, we were able to get across quickly. I would have preferred to take the more scenic route on the upper level but that's where all the trucks are required to go so there's usually a lot more traffic there. So, while the lower level may not be as picturesque, it's almost always faster.Read more

  • More Tolls

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

We passed through New Jersey quickly since there was no traffic but it felt long since there's nothing of interest to see as we drive through, just straight flat highways stretching as far as the eye can see. Nothing in New Jersey caught my eye as we drove through.
This is one of their many toll crossings. It's right on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania by the Delaware Water Gap. I guess New Jersey wanted one more chance to grab some money from people driving through.

  • Welcome to Pennsylvania!

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

We're in Pennsylvania! This is the third state that we've been in today. The drive through Pennsylvania is long but at least the scenery is more interesting than New Jersey. In Pennsylvania we've got mountains, a lot of fog, and plenty of trees. I like to visit Pennsylvania. There's so much to see and do here. We really need to make a trip back here sometime.Read more

  • Breakfast Stop

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

We stopped for breakfast at Perkins in Mount Pocono. Strangely enough, right across the street from Perkins was the McDonald's where I had breakfast when I drove up to Niagara Falls. I guess Mount Pocono is a popular destination for breakfast. I'm glad that we've stopped though. I'm starving! It's really good to stretch my legs for a bit too.Read more

  • Breakfast is Served

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

We've been to Perkins several times already but never for breakfast. We had nothing to worry about though, their food was great! One nice option that Kathy liked was being able to get tater tots as her potato choice rather than hash browns, home fries or french fries. They were nice and crispy too, exactly how she likes them. We'd definitely come back to Perkins for breakfast again!Read more

  • Breakfast With My Honey

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

My breakfast was also very tasty. I got scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns, and the biscuits with sausage gravy. I love having the biscuits and gravy but it's, sadly, a vacation meal for me because it's almost unheard of in New York City. I wish that at least a few restaurants back home served that but I haven't found any yet. Hopefully, one day, this great dish will catch on.Read more

  • We're Here!

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

After we finished breakfast, Kathy wanted a break from driving so I agreed to spend some time behind the wheel. Unfortunately, while I'm driving I'm not able to document our trip. It was uneventful though and there wasn't much to say or show. I was happy when we finally arrived in Syracuse.
Once we got to Syracuse, the first thing we did was go to our hotel to check in and drop off the bags. Unfortunately, we couldn't check in because the Marriott Courtyard didn't have any rooms available for early check-in. It wasn't really a problem for us to check in that night but we felt bad that we wasted our time driving to the hotel when we could have gone straight to the fair.
The drive from the hotel to the fair grounds was horrific. It was only a few miles yet it took us more than 40 minutes to get there. Once we finally got there, it took another 40 minutes just to park the car. I'm really surprised that the New York State Fair is such a popular attraction. I hope that the fair is going to be worth all of this traffic!
Looking at the map, this fair is much bigger than I had expected it to be. I hope that we have enough time to see everything!

  • Brand New Cows

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

One of the first things that we saw as we entered the fairgrounds was the cow birthing area. We didn't see any cows being born, but all of these calves were born in the last day or so. Being newborns, I'm surprised by how big they are already and that they are able to walk around so well.Read more

  • Baby Calf

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Among those 350 dairy industry volunteer attendees at the fair are local dairy farmers who deliver cows from their herds to this birthing exhibit. The cows are carefully selected for health, temperament and when they will give birth at the exhibit under the watchful eye of a veterinarian and herdsman present around the clock. The cows are kept comfortable in one of two large pens at the exhibit, an effort that includes managing traffic flow of fairgoers, who are asked to be quiet and respectful to the birthing cows.Read more

  • Brandon the Calf

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

This baby cow was really having a good time. He was running all around the pen and looking around at everything. I really liked his playful spirit. I wish he would have close enough for me to pet him but he was too busy exploring everything around him. The blue collar around his neck said his name was Brandon. I hope he's always as happy and spirited as he is now.Read more

  • New Cows

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Some of these cows were so new that they still had traces of what looked like umbilical cords or placentas hanging off of their lower bodies. It didn't look very nice but it's a natural part of life, I suppose. I'm just surprised that the handlers or vets that were taking care of the cows didn't clean that up a bit more. Maybe it's like the belly button of a new born baby? That just gets clipped and, a couple of days later, just falls off. Maybe it's the same with cows?Read more

  • A Cow of a Different Color

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

All of the baby cows we saw walking around in the pen were variations of black and white patterns but this one was different from the rest. Not only was the color so different but this baby cow was content to just sit and relax, unlike the other calves who were wandering all over. I don't know why, but this looks like a female cow to me.Read more

  • Lemonade Stand

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

This lemonade stand looks just like the ones in the game Rollercoaster Tycoon. I haven't played that game in such a long time but, after seeing this lemonade stand, I'm thinking of starting again. These big lemons were all over the fair and all of them seemed to be doing great business. I never realized that lemonade was such a popular drink.Read more

  • Big Cone

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

This big ice cream cone is another food stand that seemed to be all over the fair. I really like soft ice cream, and would have enjoyed a chocolate cone, but the lines at all these big cones were so long. Eating snacks at the fair is such a popular pastime! I was expecting all the foods here to be so expensive but $1 is a great price for ice cream. I wonder just how "mini" the mini cone actually is?Read more

  • Poutine!

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I haven't had any poutine since we've been to Montreal. I was really tempted to get some from this food stand, especially since there was no line, but I decided to wait a bit and see what other food choices I had available to me. I'll probably be coming back here later, unless I find something even better. To beat poutine, it would have to be something really good!Read more

  • Alligator or Shark?

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

Finally, a food stand that's selling something different and original! At Chester's, you can have your choice of alligator or shark kabobs. They have more common choices like corn dogs and home-made potato chips too. I remember having alligator meat when we went to New Orleans and loving it. I'm not ready to buy food yet because I want to see everything that's available before I decide but I'm definitely going to remember this place.Read more

  • Corn Dogs

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Kathy was starting to get a bit hungry and decided to get one of those foot long corn dogs. She picked the bacon corn dog because she thought it sounded good. I was surprised by her food choice. Although I eat corn dogs a lot, I've never seen her eat one. I didn't even think that she liked them. Maybe, since we were at the fair, she wanted to try something different and new.Read more

  • Gators Like Chips

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

The bacon corn dog that Kathy got was very disappointing. We were expecting crumbled bacon to be running all through the corn dog batter but what we got was a normal foot long corn dog with a single slice of bacon wrapped around it.
Did I say a normal corn dog? This one was quite beneath the standards of what I've come to expect from a corn dog. The batter was crispy and well done, just the way I like it but the meat inside was not very good. The hot dog tasted very cheap, as if it was not made from quality meats. The meat was an odd reddish color too, making me wonder exactly what sort of meat that this corn dog was made of. Eating together, we finished it. Not so much that we enjoyed it, more that we were just so hungry. The food at the New York State Fair is not getting off to a good start.

  • Ice Cream Cow

    September 2, 2017 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Cows and ice cream seem to both be very popular subjects at the New York State Fair so I guess it was just a matter of time before someone combined the two ideas. The purple cow is so bright, colorful and unexpected that it can't help grabbing your attention. I definitely want some ice cream today, but not just yet.Read more
