Thailand and Europe

Life invited me to quit my job, so I decided to follow life's lead ... The girls who visited me last year in the Phillippines had flights booked for Thailand this month, so I took it as a cue to go exploring again. Baca selengkapnya
  • Spirited away...

    22 Februari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

When we got to the main temple courtyard we found that there were lots of decorations and locals preparing a feast. Apparently we happened to go up there on the 650th celebration of the temple and monks from all over Chiang Mai had been invited to the celebration. Local Chiang Mai restaurants and cafés collaborated in making the feast possible. A feast which was based purely on donations which would then be offered to the monks. I felt like I had stepped into the beginning scenes of Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away anime film. What an absolute delight to taste and see so many local dishes, and for free!
We also were able to see some local music, dress styles and traditions.

The colourful offering trees are offerings tot he months which include little rice bags, and foodstuffs, sweets, to toothpaste, clothes detergent, etc. very random and creative.

    22 Februari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Not only were they celebrating the temple, but also the national Macha Budha day, a celebration which lasts 3 days.

Some of the foods we tried... Khao soi, Nam gniao (local chiang mai soups served with noodles, local mushrooms, liver, pork, etc.), a variety of local teas, like Centella asiatica tea.Baca selengkapnya

  • Bangkok

    23 Februari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Bye bye lovely Chiang Mai, hello Bangkok!

Hot and muggy, loud, busy and dirty... Bangkok is really a modern representation of urban survival of the fittest. I chose to stay near Chinatown area, not sure yet whether that was a wise choice. Anyhow, it's done!

Here's some crazy asian scenes ...

The blond chinese dude is a jewellery designer in Bangkok for the epic worldwide jewellery fair, apparently among the most important in the world. We met on our flight and happened to be traveling in the same direction.

  • Song Wat

    23 Februari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Miles, a friend from Wat Tam Wua, got stranded in Bangkok after missing his flight. So I was happy to team up with this bold, spirited and happy person! A real buddy away from home.

We had a posh and naughty asian meal in Song Wat, while sharing life dramas over a naughty bottle of white wine.

Song Wat is the warehouse trading area by the river, which is slowly changing into a hip neighbourhood full of hidden gems for sibarites and artsiness.

We then roamed around the chinatown markets. In the evening we visited Chatuchak market, the largest market in Asia. Oh hell! I managed to get some very affordable shopping in!

    24 Februari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

After breakfast at tiffany's (more like asian grandma's) we headed over the murky Chao Phraya River on a taxi boat to the Hilton pool, and when the sun disappeared we relocated to the Sheraton. Nothing like attitude to get you into these places, Miles has it on!

It's so horribly hot, sticky and humid in Bangkok that I honestly can't be bothered doing any typical touristing.

  • Bangkok Skyline

    24 Februari 2024, Thailand ⋅ 🌙 30 °C

We whizzed up to the 32nd floor of the Hilton to see the sunset and the awing Bangkok skyline at night. Also... the full moon in Virgo! Just the one which marked the beginning of the last year's craziness for me.

Below we could see all the buildings lighting and the multicoloured boats going up and down the river.

    25 Februari 2024, Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After the usual breakfast, we hit the Hilton pool again, this time with a cheeky bottle of wine. The previous day was Macha Buddha, so no alcohol could be consumed.

We did some shopping in downtown Talat Noi where we discovered a high-end New York brand workshop, very hidden amid all the chop shops and mechanics, where I was able to get myself two very beautiful and decently priced kimonos.Baca selengkapnya

  • Psychoneuroimmuneendochrinology Congress

    2 Maret 2024, Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

So off I went to the 35 year anniversary celebration of kPNI where some brilliant minds in the field were speaking. My main goal, to network. To get infected by positive, courageous, intelligent, multicultural people within this discipline. I met people from all sorts of professional backgrounds and nationalities, each with their own very interesting story.

The speakers themselves blew our minds and the organisation remained true to what they preach, a healthy lifestyle. The food consisted of healthy snacks and veggie-based balanced meals.

The best were the sitting breaks, they got us dancing, singing, doing push ups, sit-ups, squats, breathwork, body-contact, etc. All based on fighting that number one killer, sedentarism!!

I can't stress enough how invigorated I came out of that weekend. Cognitively stimulated, professionally motivated and driven, personally touched by all the amazing people I interacted with. And so I can say my mission of networking bore fruit!

  • Antwerp

    4 Maret 2024, Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

After an exhausting weekend of 300% cognitive activity, I took myself on a walking tour around Antwerp. I could feel my brain struggling to keep up with all the historic details being mentioned about this most amazing town rich in history, trade, craftmanship, architecture, canals, tunnels, chocolate, diamonds, pharma, etc.

All I can say is, Antwerp far outranks Brussels. It is well worth going and taking in some history/culture. I so wish I had been able to stay more time to see the museums!

The home exchange I was staying at was next to the neighbourhood where there is the largest concentration of orthodox jews in Europe. It suffices to say that all the diamonds pass through that neighbourhood.

  • Brussels

    5 Maret 2024, Belgium ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

I couldn't got to Belgium and not see Mailys, so I did a pit stop in Brussels on the way to Paris. So I took the train from Antwerp central, a huge and historically beautiful station built by Leopold II, straight to Brussels Central. What teenagehood memories I hold of Brussels Central station when visiting the boarding school girls!

I was able to see Mailys' newly acquired building where she lives an environmentally conscious lifestyle in community among co-owners who are her sister, partner and close friends. What a fabulous idea! And they have a garden, with compost and chickens. Admirable, right inside Brussels centre!

I was able to join her for a Korean dinner with 4 lovely friends of hers. We had so many interesting conversations, and lots of laughs!!

  • Paris Jazzzzzz

    6 Maret 2024, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

I arrived in Paris just in time to reach the next home exchange in the 11e arrondissement, very conveniently situated near Finola's flat and the musician's hotel.
I stocked up on groceries and set off to meet Finola for the concert at the famous Duc de Lombards. Quite the honour to be invited by the musicians!Baca selengkapnya

  • Paris avec Marco

    7 Maret 2024, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Marco and I were able to spend a little time together walking around Île de Paris, between his radio interview and the next concert.
We walked past Notre Dame under construction and had a little meditation in a beautiful church.

I spent some time visiting Musée d'Orsay before going back for some more jazz magic.

This time I was lucky enough to sit right next to them and almost be a part of the stage. There is nothing like feeling those vibrations moving through you and being infected by the musician's magic creativity.
There was a special little surprise with invited guest singer Cyrille Aimée (a french-dominican New Orleans jazz singer on tour in Paris launching her album). The guys happened to meet her at the airport and invited her along.
Afterwards there was a little afterparty and an after-afterparty. When in Rome... Or Paris...

  • Paris walking tour

    8 Maret 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Sleep deprived but hungry for some culture I went on a walking tour where I made a new friend from Finland to roam around with.
As usual, it was amazing to get some historical context of Paris throughout the ages. Île de Paris, Notre-Dâme, Saine Chapelle, Flower Market, La conciergrie, Le Louvre, Les Tuilleries, Place de la Concorde, etc.
After a visit to the Petit Palais we went for a tasty afternoon meal of french onion soup and red wine!

  • Finola + Montmartre

    9 Maret 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Finola is a poet and fiction writer, as well as a software programmer for Intel. She has been my idol since the age of 12, and it's so lovely to see our friendship still going strong. Unfortunately she had a writing deadline to reach during the time I was in Paris, which meant we had little time to spend together. But better that than nothing at all!
After our catch up I saw the Louvre was all booked out, so I decided to take a walking tour of the historically famous neighbourhood of Montmartre.

Once a town outside of Paris, and renowned for its debaucherous evening activity after all the agriculturers and mill workers finished their day, this current neighbourhood made its mark on Parisian history and politics in 1870 when its communist tendencies captained by the alternative and poor artists living in the area refused to be downtrodden by the national ruling power.

The moulin rouge is actually a fake and more modern represantation of the typical Montmartre mills, built closer to the walls of the city of Paris in 1870, where the more international and well-to-do part of parisian society could go to. Made timeless by Tolouse-Lautrec and other renowned characters.

  • Montmartre

    9 Maret 2024, Perancis ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Our tour guide brought us along the Bateau Lavoir, a tongue in cheek name for the very poor, small, dark, dirty, housing place where many of the famous Montmartre artists lived, among them Picasso. This place only had a sink and a toilet, no actual space for washing; and at night it creaked like a boat. Hence the ironic name "the washing boat".

We learnt where the term impressionism actually comes from and how Monet's bad eyesight was the impulsor of this movement and the key motivator of modern art.

After a visit of Sacré Coeur in the rain, I teamed up with a lovely slovenian marine biologist for a very french lunch in a typical Parisian "Bouillon", Bouillon Pigalle; more affordable, social, french food restaurants.
