  • Cider

    6 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

One of the attractions of this part of Spain is the cider......it is not drunk the way one would expect from vast flagons of falling over water...... instead the brew itself is unfiltered and full of yeast..and alive! The locals have worked out that the way to enjoy this is to drastically aerate it on a ritual called 'el escanciado' where the bottle is held above the head and a thin stream of cider is poured hitting not the base of the glass but the rim....the cider shot or 'Culín' I then passed to the drinker who drinks the fizzy shot immediately. Normally the glass is shared with the dregs thrown on the ground to cleanse the glass for the next drinker.....this sticky fun tradition has been recognized by Unesco as an 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity' .....well scrumpy doesn't quite stack up now.Baca lagi

  • Somiedo

    8 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

So a terrifying tow of the caravan through the canyon to get here . Lots of hairpins and nobody (including me) seemed to be able to stay on their side of the road. Lots of 'Oh Fuck' braking. This place is magical.. surrounded by mountains on every direction.....and there are bearsBaca lagi

  • Bears!

    9 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

As we came into Cantabria we started to see rather surprising road signs warning of bears! 'Surely Not' we thought but it really does seem that these hills have the largest population of spanish bears.....we took a picture of our own bear-like pet as an indication of sizeBaca lagi

  • Estoy en Babia

    10 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This region is just over the border from Asturias and into Leon. It is so perfect with its wide fertile plane surrounded by mountains that the phrase to be in a happy place and no longer here is estar en Babia.... even though most spaniards would not have the slightest idea where Babia is.Baca lagi

  • Goodbye Asturias

    11 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

So today we headed east. Asturias has been wonderful.....is wonderful....the intense greens and lushness....I hope I have captured something of the essence of this flying over the mountains as we head out of Asturias into Lyon and then GaliciaBaca lagi

  • Slate

    12 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

As soon as we crossed the mountain pass.....not within a few km but immediately....the buildings changed. Gone were the horreos....not one seen to the south of the pass....and gone too were tiles! Not a tile to be seen but slate everywhere and not just for roofs either they are used for walls ...we have not discovered how yet but we suspect mud bricks faced with slate. They also don't build very well here....many abandoned buildings and all of them in an advanced stage of returning to the earth.Baca lagi

  • Gold!

    12 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

This is Las Medulas....we went there to see the isolated sandstone peaks. What we didn't know is this was the biggest goldmine in the Roman world. On average nearly 7 tonnes of gold was mined each year using over 6000 workers. Aquaducts brought water to the site for the separation process.Baca lagi

  • Castle

    12 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

No soon as I posted about all the buildings here falling down than we came across this castle the first bits of which date from the 700's....we were driving through this ravine and then saw this castle way up on the cragBaca lagi

  • Bayona

    14 Julai, Sepanyol

One of the most beautiful towns in Spain in our opinion but sadly crowded with tourists in the summer. We chose to go up to the moorland above the town where there are wild horses and spectacular views of the Islas Cies just off the coastBaca lagi

  • A Guarda

    14 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A Guarda and the (not very easy) entrance to the Minho are south of Bayona and on the border with Portugal. Lots of fishing here so we had a very good lunch of razor clams and prawns.

  • Tui

    16 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

This city is old....and old here doesn't mean Romans but bronze age and the Castro people. I didn't think the cathedral looked old at all but I was wrong with the first buildings being in 700 AD. Tui faces Valença with it's imposing fort across the river MinhoBaca lagi

  • Turning South

    20 Julai, Sepanyol ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

So that is our holiday nearly done....we are packed and ready to turn south from our favorite campsite at A Cañiza have spent a great afternoon with Mandy Thody yesterday

  • Lamego

    20 Julai, Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

There is a lot in this town to see but for us the major sight was Sanctuario da Nossa Senhora dos Remedios - Sanctuary of Our Lady of Good Remedy. The Baroque chapel was built over an older 14th centaury chapel in 1730 but the staircase!!!!! It took over 200 years to build. I took the video of the staircase at night so that you could not see that the Portuguese , bless them, decided that the best route for the power cables and a couple of pylons and a dozen poles was to run it up alongside the stairs!Baca lagi

  • Elvas

    23 Julai, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Well this is an interesting place. It is the border fortress opposite Badajoz and a huge 'star fortress' with a 6 km long aqueduct which at some points stands 40m high with four tiers of arches. It was of course moorish but captured in 1166 by Alfonso 1 of Portugal.Baca lagi
