    After a hot steamy night at the Gold Coast it was an early start to head to the airport to begin the first leg of our adventure. Ann and Patrick dropped us off and in we went to board our Scoot flight to Singapore. As flights go it was very comfortable and seemingly quick.
    We booked in to our accommodation, hotel Destination in Beach road. Had a bit of a relax then headed out to Chinatown for a look and some dinner. It's nearly Chinese New Year so there were many decorations around. We had some lovely dumplings, fried rice and noodles.
    Even though we were tired, we pushed on and went to Gardens by the Bay for the light show. Such an amazing place and so many people out and about on quite a pleasant evening. Fatigue got the better of us, so we headed back to the hotel for a refreshing shower and a nice sleep.    Weiterlesen

    Singapore day 2

    Ahhh what a lovely cool, comfortable night's sleep. Pathetically first things first we all checked our electronic devices then got ready for the buffet breakfast downstairs. After brekky we headed up to the rooftop pool to check out the view and pool facilities, very nice.
    We walked up the road to Kampong Glam and had a look around there before we tried to get a transit pass which proved to be more difficult than we thought, so we got a taxi to Gardens by the bay. This is the most magnificent place. We went on an audio trolley tour for 20 minutes which was great cause it was sooooo hot to walk around and Jan has a dicky knee. Next stop was the Cloud forest conservatory. It was amazing and so cool with a big waterfall and tropical plants including ferns and outstanding orchids.
    Time to have some lunch and a relax in air conditioned comfort.
    We then went on the walkway over to the Marina Bay Sands hotel and shopping centre. Hmmm a bit nice!!!! But I think I'll have to stick to katies and Jacqui E for my fashions!!!!
    Off to the airport to shower and relax and freshen up after an exhausting day out in the heat. Next leg of our journey starts at 10.50pm. UK here we come.    Weiterlesen

    UK day one

    14. Februar 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 4 °C

    Next leg of our journey was on Norwegian Air. We boarded the plane after a freshen up shower at Singapore airport. We got fed at the beginning of the flight then settled down to get as much sleep as possible. We all managed to get some sleep, before we were fed again.
    Finally we arrived in the UK. Mary and Aaron were there to meet us and after a coffee we headed off in the hire car to their house in Solihull. It was a fun drive with one stop for breakfast. Had a little drive around Mary and Aaron's previous neighbourhoods then we arrived at their house and as we got out of the car it started to snow. How exciting!!!! After some food and drink we had a bit of a sleep to get over our jetlag. It was cold and rainy which we enjoyed as we just had some fish and chips for dinner and enjoyed each other's company.     UK day 2- Birmingham

    We had a good night's sleep and up reasonably early. No snow today but beautiful fresh sunny day. After brekky and shower we all got into the car and Mary and Aaron drove us into Birmingham with commentary. Going through all different types of areas from the less wealthy suburbs to the posher places. We drove through Bournville where the Cadbury factory is and the village that Mr Cadbury had built for the factory workers when the factory first began in 1824.
    Continuing on into the town centre. It was icy cold in the wind and we had a nice warm cup of coffee then had a walk around town.
    Back in the car and out of Birmingham into the country, so pretty with the winter trees. We ended up at a pub, the Crabmill in Henley-in-Arden, to have some lunch. A bit more of a sightseeing tour around some beautiful heritage listed country estates with magnificent scenery. Back to Mary and Aaron's getting quite weary. Mary and Geoff went off to IKEA to buy a chair while they had a big enough car to fit it in. Jan, Aaron and I had some toast and relaxed in the warm house.     UK day 3- Cotswolds

    16. Februar 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

    Today the sun was shining and the skies were blue, so we headed off to one of our favourite parts of the world , the Cotswolds. We drove through some beautiful countryside and cute towns and eventually ended up in the Cotswolds. A drive through 3 picture postcard villages, Buckland, Laverton and Stanton. OMG so many photo options, it almost looks like a movie set in a British movie or TV show. Broadway was the town where we had lunch and a walk through the main street and popped into sweet little shops. One place was an old Georgian style building with homewares and furnishing, the building was just amazing and you could imagine it in its days as a home for some wealthy people. After our walk around we drove through some more countryside dotted with sheep ready to pop with little lambs. We saw a fox heading into his lair and beautiful pheasants in the fields. Another stop was made at Broadway Tower where the view was just devine. We saw Deer around the tower and it was quite icy on the hill but sunny. Drove on to Chipping Campden where we had afternoon tea in a sweet little tea rooms, another walk around into some more cute homewares and decorating shops then back on the road for a bit more of a tour, taking advantage of the beautiful day we had. We drove through Blockley, Bourton-on-the-Hill and Moreton-in-Marsh. Back home to Solihull.Weiterlesen

    UK day 4- local day

    Just a lazy local day today. Catch up on washing and shopping. Geoff and I walked into the town centre, about 25 minutes. It was cool to start but warmed up as we walked. We had a shop around then Mary and Jan drove in and we all had lunch in Touchwood shopping centre. Geoff and I walked back then Aaron drove us to get some fireworks but it was closed. Pie and veg for dinner tonight then off to bed.Weiterlesen

    UK day 6- to the Lakes District

    Today we are driving up to the Lakes District. We packed the car and headed off around noon. The weather is rainy today so good day to be in a car. We had a lunch stop at The Fitzherbert Arms in Swynnerton. Amazing food and a gorgeous pub. We continued on our way getting to our most gorgeous accommodation around 5pm. Poor Geoff got a bit car sick around the winding roads. We spent the afternoon and evening just adoring the cottage and surroundings, it's like an episode of escape to the country.Weiterlesen

    UK day 7- Lakes District- Stone Cottage

    Beautiful morning watching some rabbits in the back garden, sooo cute. Had a lovely bacon and eggs breakfast. Geoff and I set off for a walk through some fields and at the base of the hill, past some beautiful cottages. There was one group of cottages called Crookabeck. A lot of these cottages are actually self catering B&B's. We arrived in Patterdale, which had a pub and a post office and shop. We continued on to Glenridding which is a bigger village at the bottom of lake Ullswater. On the walk back to Stone Cottage we ran into Aaron who was walking to Glenridding. Back to the cottage where Jan and Mary had just returned from a walk. We waited for Aaron then went for a drive around Ullswater lake to Pooley Bridge and had a coffee and a walk around. Another quiet evening after a beautiful sunny but cold day at the Lakes.Weiterlesen

    UK day 8- Lakes Disrict- Beatrix Potter

    A lovely drive through the Lakes District over the pass and into Bowness on Windermere, had some morning tea and a walk around the shops. We caught a ferry over lake Windermere to Near Sawrey where Beatrix Potter lived. A walk around the village and noted many things that inspired drawings and stories in her books. We looked in the house and her garden.
    We drove to Grasmere and had some lunch and a walk around, bought some gingerbread unique to this part of the world. Back to the cottage for a lovely night sitting around the log fire.    Weiterlesen

    UK day 9- Stone Cottage, Lakes District

    Another beautiful day here in the Lakes Disrict. After breakfast Geoff and I set out on a walk to Brotherswater. More stunning scenery and many photos to be taken. We went through Hartsop and then along the walk by Brotherswater, very nice indeed. Through a sheep paddock and a campground to the Brotherswater Inn where we had a hot chocolate and enjoyed the view. Back on a track on the other side of the Water heading back to Deepdale where stone cottage is. Just made it back in time to join the others heading into Glenridding to have some lunch at Inn on the Lake. Great food and another stunning view of Ullswater. After lunch the girls, Mary, Jan and I went to Windermere and Ambleside for a bit of a look around the shops. Back to the cottage for another evening around the log fire.Weiterlesen

    UK day 10- To York

    Regrettably we left Stone Cottage and headed off to York. A last look at Glenridding and we had a Lakeland icecream because Aaron says it is the best. It was very nice and we got some strange looks as it was only 2 degrees!! Off we went travelling through the Yorkshire Dales, quite beautiful and remote looking. Stunning paddocks and most magnificent stone fences covering many miles. We stopped at Grassington a lovely town in the Dales and had a walk around, quite cold. On we went and drove through Harrogate, a beautiful city with lovely stone houses very pretty. We finally made it to York and got to our accommodation which is a refurbished apartment in a big building that was once a county hospital.Weiterlesen

    UK day 11- York

    24. Februar 2018 in England ⋅ ⛅ 0 °C

    Geoff and I went off together today and walked around the streets of York. We found the Shambles and there was a market going on there. Eventually after just walking around a bit we found part of the wall and started to walk on the wall and ended up around the York Minster. After a bit of a walk around the neighborhood we decided to line up to go in the Minster. We saw Mary and Aaron and she said use our tickets but we got busted and left. Met up again with Jan, Mary and Aaron for lunch. Geoff and I went for more of a wander about and ended up at the York castle museum. That was very interesting with a realife Victorian neighbourhood as well as other exhibits, fashion through the ages, kitchens through the ages, WW1 exhibit as well as the sixties and the prison cells of the past.
    Wandering around in the late afternoon we saw many stag and hens party groups and the girls had very skimpy clothes on for such cold weather. Back to our accommodation and relaxed for the evening.    Weiterlesen

    UK day 12- York

    25. Februar 2018 in England ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

    Geoff and I went to the Jorvik centre this morning. This is a museum over a Viking site which was discovered when they started building a shopping centre in the 1970's. The museum has a glass floor at the start where you can see some of the actual dig site. They have recreated scenes from the Viking village pieced together from the artefacts that they unearthed. They found about 40,000 relics in the dig and are on display in the museum.
    We walked to the pub where we met up with Jan, Mary and Aaron and some of their friends for a lovely lunch at The Whippet Inn. Nice lunch with great company. Mary and Aaron stayed with their friends for further drinks while Jan, Geoff and I went home via some souvenir shops. Another relaxing evening at our accommodation    Weiterlesen

    UK day 13- Back to Solihull

    Wonderously there were snow flurries this morning while we were packing up to return to Solihull. It is so cool to see the snow. We firstly stopped at homebase (bunnings), to buy some taps for Mary and Aaron's bathroom. On the road and we drove through quite a bit of snow, Jan and I were loving it. It stopped snowing closer to home but about 5 minutes after we got home it started to snow quite nicely, it was like it was just for us. It got very cold and more snow is forecast for tomorrow. A lovely evening around the fireplace keeping warm.Weiterlesen

    UK day 14- Head to Gatwick

    Happily we woke to a winter wonderland having snowed over night. It was soooo beautiful and we were very excited, unlike the locals who were moaning. We packed our bags and set off for Gatwick Hilton hotel. We went through many snow showers which was really cool. Maybe not for motorists in other areas that were affected more. We took a little side tour and drive through Windsor and stopped to take a couple of photos of the castle. Jan finally got her Castle!!!!! We arrived at Gatwick Hilton and sorted out our bags before we had our last meal together.Weiterlesen

    Day 15- Gatwick to Singapore

    After a very hot night in the Hilton Hotel and I mean temperature wise 😜, we met Mary and Aaron and walked over to the departure terminal. We said our sad goodbyes and started the long journey home. It all started with a delayed flight. We had the exit row seats so we had plenty of leg room however I did not get any sleep at all. Geoff managed to get some sleep and Jan was like me tried but with no luck. We arrived in Singapore and got straight into our room so we showered and slept for about 5 hours. We got up and went out for dinner at the Kampong Glam. Jan and I had a 40 min foot massage and 30 min body massage, just heaven. Back to the hotel and up to the rooftop, lovely view and Geoff had a swim.Weiterlesen

    Jan slept ok, but Geoff and I were awake a lot through the night. Eventually we got a few hours sleep before we went downstairs for breakfast. Showered and packed then went to the Botanical gardens. The gardens are a world heritage site. We went into the national orchid garden which was very lovely. Next stop was the flower dome at Gardens by the Bay. Just beautiful. A quick bite to eat then we headed out to the airport. A comfortable wait at the airport just chillin, walking around, some last minute shopping and some nice Vietnamese for dinner. Finally on board for our last leg of the journey.Weiterlesen
