  • Louvre Eiffel Tower and the Seine

    July 10, 2022 in France ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Kicked off the rucksacks and travelled by metro around the city to The Louvre, saw beautiful Greek Roman and Eygptian statues. Then sarnies under the Eiffel Tower escaped the sun to find shade by the Seine sketched and watched people Tango!Read more

  • Back home and best bits

    July 11, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

On Friday 9th July 2022 we caught a bus from The Tommy Wass at the top of Dewsbury Rd in Leeds and travelled by train, tube, car, metro, taxi, boat, tram, bicycle and foot to visit 6 countries and now we're going home again.

Paris, Barcelona, Milan, Venice, Salzburg and Munich.

Were on our final journey home setting off from Munich at 8.27am and heading to the Eurostar at Brussels. Then continuing up to Leeds in one day hopefully arriving home at 22.57.

We've drank our body weight in water. We've been bitten and stung. We've massaged aching feet, laughed and cried.

The best meal was the beer garden in Munich.

The second best meal were the waffles in Salzburg. The best food overall I felt was Spain from Tapas on a rooftop pool to Nachos on the beach, a pokesalad at a bar and spagetti Carbonara in a restaurant.

Travelling has been a laugh but we've learnt lots of important things firstly how lucky we are to be able to do something like this. Learning to communicate in different speaking countries were the collective language is English. This has made our travelling a bit easier but its isolating when you don't know what people are saying. However, you will learn more by trying and making a fool of yourself than doing nothing at all.

At the hostel yesterday we sat down and wrote our best bits of the trip:

    The highlights have been:
The Louvre seeing sculptures of Mercury, Diana and Shekmet.
    Sketching by the Seine.
The rides at Eurodisney Hyper Space and Indiana Jones rides.
    Just the atmosphere of Paris.

Finding our way to the hotel in Barcelona and feeling warm and welcome.
    The rooftop pool.
    Swimming in the sea.
Super moon rise over the sea.
    Carla Ballestero (singer).
    People.
    Gaudi Park.
    Food.

Shopping at Lidl on a Monday morning in Milan.
Meeting a nice Argentinan woman traveller.
    Milano Centrale Station.

    Atmosphere and apartment in Venice
    Guggenheim museum
    Wandering over canals
Traghetto Gondola across the grand canal.
Swimming in the sea at the Lido beach.
    Music.
    Food.

Salzberg heights walking up lots of hills and feeling healthy.
Waffles and Aperol spritzer at Hellbrunnen.

Swimming in the river at Munich.
Eating a slap up meal and downing it a with a 2 pint glass.
    Cycling around Munich
Visiting MUCA- Museum of Urban Contemporary Art
    Food.

  • Gard de Lyon to Barcelona Sants

    July 12, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

After a slow start of packing and eating breakfast we said au reviour to Plug Inn hostel and started the first interior journey of our trip from Gard de Lyon to Lyon Part Dieu and then onto Barcelona. It was 20 minutes late so hopefully we'll still have time to change.
We managed to catch the connecting train 🚆 14.35 from Lyon to Barcelona 19.35. Our journey was 5 hours long but felt like a couple of hours as we were so distracted by our surroundings, it seemed to contract time.
Coming out of the station Barcelona Sants the day is still light and 29 degrees. We set out on foot, found the main tree lined pedestrian avenue which would lead to our road: Carre de Paris. The seats outside small bars are being filled with people drinking cerveza: a mix of generations chatting underneath an urban canopy of green plane trees. We visited an air conditioned supermarket and stocked up on bread cheese and ham and even walked three blocks more before we realised we'd past our hotel! We're now settled at Sunotel tired and showered watching Shrek. We will visit the pool in the morning ... very different experience from the last hostel. Updates on Barcelona tomorrow but so far this place is wonderful, friendly and warm. Bon noche.

  • Barcelona rooftops and moon rise

    July 13, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Mas Que Nada is playing at Sunotel, why would you go anywhere else? Its 31 oc and the hotel has its own rooftop pool and hot tub the latter seeming futile but the former, a welcome plunge. Looking down 7 floors you can see the plane trees line the road below.

Down on the street people are going about their daily business. It's been 6 days and we've accumulated 3 persons worth of laundry, so we follow google map grid system of Barceliona 2 blocks down and found a laundromat with fab acoustics.

Then the second half of the day involved walking again, this time along the playas. I had read somewhere that on a full moon the locals gather together and celebrate the moon on the beach.

As we walked over the sand there was no moon in sight the sun was setting and the sky looked hazy.

The evening paned out like pretty much like every evening in an outside resturant: chatting eating and drinking. Just then the moon began to rise above the sea line. It was red at first and everyone gasped and began to run to the waters edge. It was a lovely moment with locals without any language barriers to understand we were sharing the same experience.

  • Switching hostels and tour bus

    July 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We switched hostels today because I didn't book enough time at one place in Barcelona originally.

However, it worked out well because we got to see another part of the city. Urbany hostel sits along a main open road which intersects three main thoroughfares. City planners are engineering all three into one junction near us at the moment, which is a major piece of work.

Urbany hostel has definitely a younger vibe: I think I'm dampening my kids style. We had enough food to last us through the day after the cossol breakfast we (I) smuggled out of Sunotel. And found a supermarket to buy some ingredients for food tonight.

We boarded a sightseeing bus tour which took us past iconic places like Sagrada Familia the largest unfinished Roman Catholic Church designed by Francisca de Paula del Villa when he resigned Antonio Gaudi took over and made it into the elaborate gothic design.

We melted in the 4pm sun on the bus driving through streets, at one point the jasmine trees hung over the open top bus filling the air with its sweet perfume. We couldn't have attempted to see this on foot!

Back at the hostel we visited the rooftop bar (no pool this time but an amazing 13 floors up view of the setting sun light over the city. I enjoyed a Caiphrihna and felt I was in Brazil again.
Another busy day. Hopefully we will make it to the Gaudi Park tomorrow.
