We have arrived!

Finally arrived in Bangkok and checked in to our hotel. Once on wifi, realized we apparently missed Snowmageddon back home, so this trip was amazing timing on our part! It was just starting to snow when we left.

Flew China Eastern for the first time. Wasn't sure what to expect as the reviews were mostly really good or really bad. All in all, I have no complaints! Well worth the $700 round-trip airfare! 😊

I'm 5'2" but had plenty of leg-room. Sharon will have to provide her own opinion this! Each seat was provided a new pair of headphones, and there was individual in-seat entertainment. There was a mix of movies, including recent Hollywood releases. They even had games which were pretty fun and helped to pass the time.

Foodwise, it's airplane food. What do you expect?? On the first leg, from Vancouver to Shanghai, we were served 2 meals. It wasn't bad but was served cold/lukewarm. My only wish was for it to be hot. Aside from that, the shrimp on rice in corn sauce was good, as was the pork pasta. They also served warm buns, but it came after they had served the meal. Would have been nice if it had been served at the same time. We also got a tuna sandwich as a snack between the meals, but it definitely wasn't that interesting. On the 4 hour flight from Shanghai to Bangkok, we got a single package of crackers. No comments on it as I didn't eat it.

Finally arrived in Bangkok! We had pre-booked a transfer and after a little while, Sharon spotted the sign and the nice man waiting for us. Quiet drive to the hotel but thankful that there was no traffic at 2am! Couldn't wait to check in and get some rest. No complaints about the hotel! We had booked a holiday escape package that included a room upgrade and it definitely was that! Views from the 24th floor (highest floor the elevator goes to!) at 3am. Can't wait to see this view in daylight after some sleep.もっと詳しく

Yep, we went to a mall. Seemed like a chill, relaxed thing to do that didn't require any thinking. Didn't find any cute dresses that would be suitable for visiting temples (which require you to dress modestly and cover up your shoulders and knees), but it did have an amazing section with stuff made by local artisans, such as jewelry, pottery, glassware, beauty products and household decor. The bottom floor was an incredible replica of a night market and there was so much "street food". One of the upper floors had an incredible range of restaurants, all with delicious sounding dishes. If I hadn't been full from breakfast, the hardest thing would have been deciding what to eat! Stopped for a drink at Fallabella, to rest, relax and enioy the view. Overcast and smoggy and surprisingly bright, and then the sun came out and it got REALLY bright and hot very quickly. Still operating off little sleep, so it was time to go back to the hotel for a siesta before the street food tour tonight.

We also learned that it was cheaper to pay the taxi by meter instead of a flat rate (75THB vs 200THB), and even though we were paying by meter, he still wanted cash upfront. (Which we definitely didn't do. How were we supposed to know how much to pay when we hadn't reached our destination?) He turned out to be pretty nice and taught us that a woman says khob kun ka, which means thank you, and a man says khob kun krub.もっと詳しく

Gosh: After much walking and discovering the city, I have noticed that the train stations are the tidiest locations in the city! Clean floors, so clean that entire families would be sitting on the floor if the stations eating!

Gasp: We took a tuk tuk and I need to tell you that these folks are fun! They will swerve in and out of the traffic, back and forth and still allow the vespa’s squeeze by if there is space since they are smaller and they can fit in the tiny spaces between the cars and us! Incredible!もっと詳しく

A Chef's Tour: Part 1

This was a really great tour, fun and informative and our guide Andy spoke English well and was lovely about weaving in stories and history on our tour. This was mostly an introduction to street foods on Yaowarat Rd., along with a few brick and mortar stops. Most of the food was Chinese, rather than Thai, but most of it was super delicious!

1. ginger soup w/crispy cracker, black sesame paste balls, gingko nuts and tofu: very gingery, lightly sweet

2. dumplings filled with chinese chives and magic sauce (sweet soy, vinegar, chili, garlic)

3. pork leg with vegetables (similar to sauerkraut, some type of pickled greens); chili oil and garlic on side. tastes like comfort food

4. peanut sauce. soup w/ginger, cabbage, bean thread noodles, egg, green onion. very light and clean tasting, mild flavoured. peanut sauce really makes it delicious

5. chicken skewers, satay sauce, side salad. I don't like ordering this at home and only end up with it when other people order it, because the chicken is almost always dry. This is nothing like what I get at home. The chicken is super moist, marinated in coconut milk overnight, grilled with charcoal. peanut sauce is spicier and less sweet than back home. salad is refreshing with a vinegary kick, very lightly spicy.

6. herbal drink: pennywort, kind of tastes like spinach and carrot (It was refreshing to have in the heat. I didn't love it but I also didn't hate it. It was just something I tried but I wouldn't have it again.

7. shrimp dumplings

8. Thai green curry with rice and fried slices of Chinese sausage. This green curry tasted nothing like I would get at home. The fried slices of Chinese sausage are a brilliant addition, adding some crunch and a bit of sweetness and saltiness.

9. soy sauce ice cream: tastes kind of like caramel

10. green mango with shrimp sauce: a little coconut sugar on the green mango for sweetness as the green mango is tart. shrimp sauce is salty and spicy (green chilis) and also has some cilantro. Hands down, the BEST thing I ate all night!もっと詳しく

tom yum soup: the original! distinctly taste the salty, sour, seafoody. chili on side

water mimosa: garlicky, sweet, spicy. very good!

river prawn: grilled, firm meat. seafood sauce: garlicky, spicy (red and green chilis), salty, lemony, little sugar

kind of like a chinese donut with pandan leaf custard

fresh mango juice

mango with sticky rice. mangoes here are different. smooth, creamy, not stringy

A day of wandering

Amazing day wandering this beautiful city. Started with a walk towards the river with a confused look on our faces and a tuk-tuk driver picked us out of the crowds and convinced us to take a long boat ride instead of the hop on hop off boat. The private boat was a nice experience, two temples later, Pretty sure we spent too much on the longboat but the experience was worth it.
Wat Pho what is next on our list and it was outstanding! The weather is starting to be quite hot at this time of day so the shaded areas were most welcome. We were lucky enough to experience the monks in the temple with their chanting and the Buddha's were everywhere inside of the complex. We also learned that the Buddhas with the flame on top of their heads were the ones that reached divine wisdom where are the other buddha’s we’re their protectors. After that we were more than happy to have a beautiful lunch in an air-conditioned area.
We tried to gain entrance to the Saranrom Palace but it was closed for the day so the kind gentleman helped us to get a tuk-tuk to a number of different areas starting with the tall Buddha at the golden mount. Then we received some excellent advice and details from a volunteer who had spent time in British Columbia as well as Alberta. We visited a export centre which had one week no tax per year for sapphires and rubies mined out of Thailand. That was 195% tax savings! Then off to the suit makers and we both are having beautiful suits made, yippee! By this time our tuk-tuk driver was tired of our company and chose to deliver us with a pout on his face to a metro station which was completely on the other end of town! Still with smiles on our faces we took the train home to prepare for Jay Fai, our Michelin chef experience!もっと詳しく

We were picked up today at 9:30 for a private tour of what used to be the capital city. Ayutthaya was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam from 1350 until raided by the Burmese in 1767. The city was never rebuilt. You could see evidence of the war between Burma and Thailand on these ruins. It was explained to us that the Burmese had cut the heads off all the Buddhas in the ruins and surrounding areas as well as burning the city to the ground.
The historical significance of this city is felt by the way the tour guide explained it’s history.
It was nice to see the changes from the city to the countryside.もっと詳しく

Boat was so sweet he offered to drop us off at the market on our way home instead of going back to thehotel. After a brief drive back into the city we were stuck in traffic again. The traffic can be quite heavy during the peak hours with 🚗 🚙 🚗 cars, tuk tuks and Vespas 🛵 zooming in and out of traffic! It can be a little intimating to say the least.
We finally arrived at one of the main gates of the market to grab a map, which is seriously needed if you plan on managing any kind of search for something specific! There is apparently over 3000 stalls in this market to navigate. After a short while you begin to realize that you are still seeing some of the same things over and over again. The one really confusing item was tie died items!!! When did that come back in style? It was everywhere! I was walking around by myself with a 🍺 in hand, too funny. I managed to get a skirt so I do not need to suffer further in the heat to see the temples and a rather pretty moonstone ring. Yep, that was it! Three hours & 3 🍻 beers later with ice cream in hand I was done. Coconut ice cream with palm seeds, peanuts, some kind of jelly and corn, yes you heard that right, corn! I figured if they thought it was good, I may as well give it a try. Off to the train for a relax before we head out again.もっと詳しく

Klong Lat Mayom Floating market

We had a wonderful morning of relaxing with a late pick up at 10:30 for the floating market. Our driver was named kittichat but he asked we call him Boat, which was a good chuckle because he was going to be out boat tour guide. After 30 minute drive we arrived at the market and boarded our paddle boat. Quite happy to be on this type of boat because as we were waiting, a long boat steamed by at high speed into the market for another tour company. Not sure how you get a good tour at high speed 😳. Another advantage of the slower boat was that were got to go through a lotus field which was truly just breath taking!
We were taken through narrow water ways, seen how some of the locals lived and even were fortunate enough to see a water lizard!
Once our tour was complete on the water we entered the market by foot to see all the food sold and created there. Of course, once done touring we all chose different items to try and share. The heat was so stifling that we shared a few beers to cool off.もっと詳しく

We had a nice relaxing morning with our spectacular break fast yet again. This has been a an amazing hotel for a number of reasons. We were upgraded up on our arrival, not only on level but many, right to the top! Top floor, great service, good area with access to metro and the breakfasts were amazing. I will miss the food.
We arrived at the airport early since we were picked up early because they were s a afraid the traffic would interfere with our timing. A bit of relaxing then our plane arrived with a beak on the front. Yep our plane was painted like a bird but to me it looked like a chicken! Then to really top it off, the insignia on the tail looked like an egg with a beak for the yolk... too funny. There was an inflight magazine that had the logo “Let’s NOK serve you”. Flying into Chaing Mai I noticed that the landscape was quite different. There was more farming communities and they were mixed with residential areas. Rice fields and farms with rows of trees 🌳 🌳🌳. I have to find out what kind of trees, just curious. What kinds of nuts or fruits are they harvesting on these farms? We arrived to our hotel located in a back alley, not the best location it seemed at the time. After settling in, out for a walk we went. The feel of this city is quite different. After a bit of walking we were both trying to figure out what the attraction was to our second city. We both felt like we were in a Mexican city with an Asian feel to it. A bit confusing it was as we began exploring because it felt like we may just be in the wrong area. We headed straight for a tourist stall only to be told there were no maps and she was only selling tours plus her English was spotty at best. I opted for a tuk tuk to get us to the old city because I was getting frustrated. We were charged 100 baht, which seemed reasonable to take us to a gate of the old city which we later discovered that we were located only 1/2 a block outside of another gate to the old city! Not my smartest move. We walked quite a ways and at times felt a bit uncomfortable as it felt like we were in a bad area of town. We bought a tour for the day after tomorrow to see the highest mountain in Thailand, Karen mountain tribe and more. Heading back to the hotel to rest and eat. Well guess what? Pretty much across the road from where we are staying was a entire grouping of different street food stalls! First super was pad Thai and skewered vegetables with 🥓 bacon. They really love their pork. Teresa says that Thai food at home will be spoiled forever since the Thai food here is so excellent!もっと詳しく

I was unsure if I would go or not but after a short relax at the hotel and a beer 🍺 I figured out and remembered that I could sleep at home. Get up Sharon! Ticket bought and the bus to pick me up was on its way. So surprisingly, out of the 10 guests on the red bus only 3 were men! Here I thought I would be the only female, too funny 😂.
We arrived at the arena and I had purchased ring side seats and could choose, my car mates headed up to the higher seats...lol To my disappointment the boxers were quite young, teens at best I believe. Don’t get me wrong, the fights were still quite violent but there skill was of high quality. So there was never more than 5 minutes between fights of 5 rounds, if they made it that far. Out of the six fights, there were two knockout’s! Very happy I was able to enjoy the experience.もっと詳しく

Just a great day

After a lovely breakfast of fruits and an omelet that they make quite rare if you will. Not sure everyone would eat them but they are delicious 😋. We both did our own routes today so I can only tell you what I did.
I had a great day but there was a lot of walking involved. Wandering through the streets of any country has always been one of my most favourite things to do. Stop and go. After a quick snack I headed straight for the three kings statue which is attached to the national museum. I had planned on a massage but I just was having too much fun wandering. The museum was great! Very informative with well set up rooms decorated like the information they were trying to convey.
A stop at a super cute cafe proved quite entertaining since I sat beside a fountain and pond with koi. I enjoyed my beverage while enjoying their curious company. As I walked about the foundation they followed. They literally jump over top of each other, was fun to watch and feed them.
Lunch was exceptional at the Bam Boo Cafe trying something different. Then went wandering again to the street market out of the old city. I find the markets the same except I found Thai sausage and I was waiting in line when the biggest cockroach, the size of a small mouse, ran from under the table that was serving the meats! Appetite was suddenly gone. Heading home to meet up with Teresa for supper and rest before my next event... Thai boxing 🥊.もっと詳しく

Karen tribe

We were told that this tribe came from Mayamar and Burma and that the Karen tribe we visited had 5000 occupants. With a number of different tribes living on this one mountain, we were shocked to learn that there were 14 different religions. They were quite friendly and mostly harvest coffee, rice and when the rice harvest is over they switch to vegetables 🍅 🌽 🌶. They create their own arabica coffee for Starbucks, which we had the opportunity to sample and buy if we wished ☕️. The ladies were making textiles and we were told a small scarf would take about three days to complete. A blanket for a gift about 3 months to complete. A very close knit community...to much, lol!
Their homes were all built on stilts, some with windows and some without and the views were beautiful.もっと詳しく

Wachirathan waterfall

This waterfall is beautiful and quite large. The mist being created by the falls were giving us rainbows 🌈🌈 from different view points. We were also going to be eating lunch here as well. Lunch consisted of a number of different dishes, most of which were not hot at all. I think they are catering to the tourists so after the exceptional food we have been having it was almost a little bland but still lovely. The company was good too with our tour mates since we were eating family style.もっと詳しく

The interior was filled with oddities and skins of various animals. It did not stop there... various sexual statues, chairs made of water buffalo 🐃 horns and enough conch shells to fill a small ocean. Pretty sure he had a rather large sense of self as he is depicted throughout the complex in paintings, carvings,etc. He is considered one of the mist important painters with international acclaim, with studies over seas and the examples we got the pleasure to view were beautiful.もっと詳しく

Picked up by our driver early to depart and Charlie I have learned is quite a chatter box. We stopped on our way up the mountain for a view shot of Chiang Mai and you can seriously see that they are struggling with air pollution. Our first stop is a mountain temple. We stopped at hot springs, yes you heard me right hot springs! Like it is not hot enough, there was also some shopping and mountain coffee ☕️ which was a bit bitter today because the girl mixed the medium and dark blends. Still tasty though.もっと詳しく

Blue temple

This temple was so beautiful it is actually hard to describe. The interior in all its splendour was simply breathtaking. The exterior work with the blues and golds seemed to almost blend with the sky.

White Tenple

We started the day getting up early so we could see the white temple with the morning sunlight by Teresa’s suggestion, best suggestion ever! After our main shots literally about tenth in line to gain first access in front of a bus load of tourists. So beautiful it is hard to describe. From the first entry on the bridge that leads to the temple with hands reaching out to the dragons, it feels surreal. Then upon entry it feels like other temples but if closer attention is paid to the paintings there is a very distinct story being told by the creator of the temple, which has been built solely on houses own funds. So much so that I bought the book to better understand his thoughts of his creation. The interior at first glance is religion based but in the back wall there is Micheal Jackson, minions, predator, twin towers being destroyed by 9/11. More than you can possibly even absorb in one viewing.もっと詳しく

A day relaxing

A little time by the pool after walking the city this morning. After a lunch with a street vendor we are both unsure if it was the food or a lack of proper sleep that has made us both feel a little under the weather. Get a good nights 💤 sleep.もっと詳しく
