    And We're Off

    July 2, 2019 in Canada ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Having learned from previous trips that the really early morning flight is only good in theory, we booked our flight to Victoria at a much more reasonable time. We were at the airport by 8:15 and our plane left on time at 9:40 - much more palatable than last year’s 6 am flight.

We arrived in Calgary and had a layover of 45 minutes. Not much time to spare before we were on our way to Victoria. In fact, as we arrived at the gate our zone was boarding.

After a 75 minute plane ride, we landed in cloudy and cool Victoria. We got our bags and then our rental vehicle. Evan was extremely impressed by our brand new Subaru Forrester! He thought it was the nicest vehicle he had been in.

Our first stop was Sea Cider, a lovely little orchard and tasting room. We tried their “long flight” of six ciders (Evan had sparkling apple juice) and shared a charcuterie plate. The farm and tasting room were really beautiful! We bought a bottle of cider and then drove to Category 12 Brewing, where we had been four years ago on our west coast trip. We had two flights and then had bao buns from their brand new kitchen. Not a bad way to start our trip!

We picked up a few grocery items before driving to our condo in Chinatown - it’s just a stone’s throw away from the condo we stayed in last time. It is down a small alley way (which has a gated entrance) and it is small, but big enough for the three of us.

Once we had settled in, we took a quick nap and then walked downtown to 10 Acres Bistro for dinner. We began with octopus and fennel in a romesco sauce. Then Evan had the half rotisserie chicken (he ate it all); Brad had a curried chicken grain bowl; and I had the Sooke rainbow trout with ratatouille. Everything they serve is either from their 10 acre farm in Sooke or sourced locally, so it was true farm to table eating - and it was delicious!

We called it an early night because at home it is two hours later and we have a busy day tomorrow.

    Jam and Kayaks

    July 3, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The time change hit the boys a bit hard and they were up quite early this morning. Brad went for a walk and Evan watched Netflix while I slept a bit later. By 9, we had had lattes and were ready to go to Jam. We had been to Jam on our first visit and it is one of those places you just have to go back to because the breakfast is so good!

We got there just in time to beat the monstrous line and were seated at the bar. Evan knew he was going to have the same red velvet pancakes he had last time, but Brad and I had a harder time deciding. Brad got the Naan breakfast burrito and I got the Charlie Bowl (crumbled biscuit, ham, bacon, peas, sausage gravy, and two sunny side up eggs). Delicious!

After filling up, we did a bit of shopping and then got ready to part ways. Brad was off to meet with his friend Dave and they planned to check out some breweries. Evan and I, however, were off to go kayaking! We walked to Fisherman’s Wharf where we met our guide Tom. He gave us splash skirts and life jackets and then put us in a kayak. The person at the back controls the rudder, and Evan said he really wanted to do that, so despite hesitation by Tom and I, he got into the driver’s seat.

Tom showed our small group how to do 360 turns and some basic padding and then we were off! We paddled for a bit, but then had to cross the strait which is a thoroughfare for boats and sea planes. We had to wait for air traffic control to give us a signal and then we had to power across in a hurry. It was intense! Then we explored a few coves and saw sea otters and harbour seals as well as a blue heron and bald eagle. Evan did a great job steering us and powering us through waves during our two hour tour. At one point I said that the waves were tough and Evan replied, “Not too tough for us!” It was one of the coolest things we’ve done! Although I really should have put sunscreen on the tops of my hands. 😕

    Craigdarroch

    July 3, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

We finished kayaking just after 3 and we were hungry! We felt we had earned a stop at Red Fish Blue Fish, so we walked around the harbour and were happy to see a very short line. Evan has Pacific cod and I had halibut, and it was just as good as I remembered!

Feeling refuelled, we began our 2.5 km walk to Craigdarroch Castle. The walk was largely uphill, and Evan’s legs hadn’t totally recovered from our kayaking, but we made it. Craigdarroch is a huge mansion built by a coal baron and was completed in 1890. The woodwork was incredible. They had to use six train cars to bring the wood in from Chicago! The house was fascinating and many rooms had original furniture despite it being use as a military hospital in WWI, to a conservatory to the College of Victoria (before UVic was established). The castle had an entire floor devoted to being a dance floor where an orchestra would play; a huge games floor featuring a billiards table from England; and a 14 seat dining room table. The castle is surrounded by other houses now, but originally it sat on 28 acres. Anyway, it was quite the sight!

The walk back to our condo was mostly downhill, which pleased Evan.

After some R&R and quick showers to wash off all the salt, we walked over to Tacofino for a quick bite. Evan had a pork taco and a steak taco while I had a cod taco and bean taco. They hit the spot after a busy day!

    Bites, Brews, and Butchart

    July 4, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

We began our morning with breakfast at home and a quick latte at Habit Coffee before going on our Victoria Food Tour.

We met our guide, Andy, and other tour mates (two families from North Carolina and a British pair) at the Victoria Public Market. Our first stop was inside the market at Roast, where we sampled chicharrone and meatballs with a salsa verde. We were off to a tasty start!

Next, we sampled macarons from a French patisserie in Chinatown. I had the espresso and the passion fruit macarons, while Brad tried the rose and pistachio macarons. Our next stop was a little Italian bakery where we sampled focaccia with braised onions and a brioche, which was less sweet than the French kind. To slow down our consumption of food, our next location was a matcha tea store. There, the owner showed us how to make matcha and explained the benefits of it before we got to have matcha lemonades. On this hot and sunny day, the lemonade really hit the spot.

We walked for a bit before we reached the biscuit shop that would be our next stop. They make Southern style biscuits and we tried a savoury and a sweet version. The savoury has sausage gravy and bacon on it while the sweet version had Nutella and banana. Our second last location was more of a treat for our American guests than us, but the roasted garlic and potato perogies were still amazing! They came with housemade sauerkraut and confit bacon, so they were pretty special bites. Lastly, we stopped at Rogers chocolates, which is the official chocolate of Canada for the British monarchy. We tried the Queen’s favourite as the final bite of our tour.

    Bites, Brews, and Butchart (2)

    July 4, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

After the tour, we went to Whistle Buoys to grab a quick pint and watch the busker festival as it was such a gorgeous afternoon.

We then walked to over to where our car was p arked and drove out to Butchart Gardens. Evan was very excited to be back in our “sexy beast” of a vehicle. The drive took about half an hour and when we finally arrived we could not believe how busy it was! The parking lot was quite full and had several white gloves attendants telling you where to go. When we got in, we quickly realized what all the fuss was about - it was so beautiful! Butchart is basically a Disneyland for gardeners. My flower and plant knowledge is quite basic, so I can’t really comment on the types, but I will saw the rose garden was a real showstopper!Read more

    Supper at Olo

    July 4, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

On our final night in Victoria, we had to return to Olo. We had gone here four years ago on a whim and because it was right beside our condo. It has since been on the top 100 restaurants in Canada list and for good reason.

We began with BBQ sablefish collar, which was beautifully buttery. Then we shared two starters: gnocchi with morels and albacore tuna with strawberries and sea asparagus. Evan obviously loved the gnocchi, but he also (surprisingly) loved the tuna!

For the main course, I had halibut with spot prawn broth and a quinoa and mung bean salad. Evan had a cheeseburger, which sounds boring, but was quite fantastic. And Brad had a lamb duo: loin and shoulder. I imagine when we get home he’s going to want to try cooking lamb shoulder because it was absolutely delicious!

And just when you thought we didn’t have room, we shared a pavlova with sorrel ice cream and a chocolate cake with saskatoons and marscapone ice cream. What a way to end our time here!

    Tofino or Bust

    July 5, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

It was time to leave Victoria. We cleaned up our condo and then went to Bows and Arrows for a latte and a quick waterfront tour of Victoria, and then we hit the road. Highway driving in BC is not as fast (for good reason, those mountain roads are narrow!) and not as slick as MB highway driving. So, our drive felt longer than it should have. However, it was certainly a more beautiful drive than any MB drive!

We stopped briefly in Nanaimo for lunch at Longwood Brewpub and feasted on salmon burgers, seafood chowder, and a power bowl before getting back on the highway.

We made a short pit stop near Kennedy Lake to stretch our legs and climb on the rocks there. There was a glacial stream and pool that were so completely clear that it was almost hard to believe.

As we got closer to Tofino, there was construction that stopped traffic briefly. However, the roads they were working on made the actual traveling space quite narrow! I tried to get a picture, but I don’t think it does it justice. Brad did a stellar job navigating our car through the twists and turns though!

We finally rolled into town at 5ish and got to our AirBnB, which was even more spacious than the photos. We dropped off our stuff and then Brad and I went to Pacific Surf Co to pick up his wet suit and surf board. We got the board tied to the top of our vehicle and headed back home. You don’t seem to fit in in Tofino if you don’t have a surf board strapped to your vehicle!

    1909

    July 5, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

This was a supper we were really excited about (although that’s like splitting hairs for us on this trip). We watched Paul Moran win Top Chef Canada just a few months ago and when he won, we immediately booked into his restaurant.

We arrived at the waterfront restaurant and were seated in front of two amazing views of the sun lowering onto the water. The menu looked incredible and we found it impossible to choose, so our wonderful server helped us along, although I really don’t think we could have made a bad choice.

We began with albacore tuna on white radish, which was completely mind blowing! They were perfect little bites of heaven and we almost ordered another plate for dessert! We also had coho salmon gravlax with roast potatoes and morels stuffed with humboldt squid (a dish Paul made on the show).

After the starters, we shared locally caught black cod with cubes of fried tofu and gnocchi with morels. I love black cod, so that was a winner for me! The boys liked the gnocchi best, so our sharing worked out well.

For dessert, Evan had the s’mores and we shared a sea buckthorn tart because where else can you get a sea buckthorn tart?! Just like the entire meal, dessert was also amazing!

We headed home quite full and ready for bed.

    Cox Bay Surf Pics

    July 6, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today was the first day of Brad’s surf camp! We got up at 7:30 to have breakfast and then called the surf camp to find out what beach he’d be at. After a quick stop at Rhino Coffee, we drive out to Cox Bay. While Brad got his gear on, I went down to check out the beach. The tide was pretty far out, so the beach looked like it was endless. The surf looked good for some starter surfers!

I left the beach and drove to the Visitor’s Centre to grab our park pass and then went back to the condo to retrieve Evan. We decided to do a walk through town and made a stop at the farmers market to grab fresh cherries and raspberries.

After our tour of downtown Tofino, we drove back to Cox Bay to watch the last bit of Brad’s lesson. Evan put on his swim trunks as well as he thought he might go swimming - because he is crazy.

We got to see Brad ride a few waves before his lesson was done. Evan decided he would run into the water and I have some pretty hilarious videos of him running towards the water and then promptly running back out. With the water being only 12C, it was pretty chilly!

Tacofino, Hiking, and Wolf in the Fog

    July 6, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

After we left the beach, we headed back to our place so Brad could shower and rinse off his wetsuit. We packed our stuff and drove down to Tacofino where the line was long, but moving quickly. Evan had a pork burrito, while Brad and I shared a crispy chicken burrito and two tacos: cod and pork. Everything was delicious and maybe slightly better than their outpost in Victoria.

Bellies full, we drove about 25 minutes to a hiking trail that took us through the rainforest. It was raining a bit as we traversed the forest, so that seemed apropos. Evan said it was like walking through Jurassic Park!

The hike was 5 km and took us over an hour to complete. We were feeling in need of refreshments, so we drove back towards town and stopped in at Tofino Brewing, which was packed! After a wait, we decided to head back to our place and just have a beer we brought from Victoria instead.

We had been looking forward to our dinner at Wolf in the Fog since we made it months ago. We started with humboldt squid (everyone loved this dish!), shrimp toast with red onion and fennel, and grilled octopus. Then we decided to share the baked halibut which came with white beans, grilled green onions, green beans, and fennel sausage. It was perfect! Brad and I opted out of dessert, but Evan indulged in the peanut butter and jelly deconstructed sandwich (baguette, peanut butter powder and ice cream, and grape jelly). It was all worth the wait!

We walked home quite content and ready for bed!
