    Day 0 - Packing / Packen

    The excitement is huge. I hope that everything works out as planned and that the weather is good. I am looking forward to all the new impressions, the people, the cities, the nature, the food, the experiences and everything else that is coming up. I'll try to share as much as I can here and bring you along with everything or let you participate afterwards. I'll try to write all the texts in English and German, but since the trip is in the US, at least on the pictures (and eventually videos) everything will be in English. I am happy about everyone who accompanies me virtually on this journey. The trip starts tomorrow! Are you coming with me?

    Die Aufregung ist groß. Ich hoffe, dass alles so klappt wie geplant, und dass das Wetter mitspielt. Ich freue mich auf all die neuen Eindrücke, die Menschen, die Städte, die Natur, das Essen, die Erfahrungen und alles andere, was da auf mich zu kommt. Ich versuche so viel wie möglich hier zu teilen und euch bei allem mitzunehmen oder nachträglich teilhaben zu lassen. Ich versuche alle Texte in Englisch und Deutsch zu schreiben, aber da die Reise nun mal in den USA stattfindet, wird zumindest auf den Bildern (und eventuell Videos) alles auf Englisch sein.     Easy, made it in time, thanks to a fast train from gate A to gate E, an intelligent passport and self-service check. The lines at the manual check were super long. Now waiting at the gate, boarding already started. I'm tired. 😴

    Boston Studio Allston Hotel

    Finally, the first hotel reached. Getting the rental car was the first adventure. The lady checked my booking, sent me to "Zone 2" and told me to pick any car with a key. What?! Okay, I went to zone 2, 2 women were opening doors of cars and looking for keys. I picked a car. One of the women came to me and asked, if she could have this one, cause she got told to pick the one with the key and it looks like only mine has keys. I told her sorry, I was first. She walked away, came back with the Hertz guy, and he showed her, that every car has keys, people just hide them somewhere. I took pictures of my car, and were about to drive. She knocked at my window. "Excuse me, can you help me with my phone?" Sure thing. We found out, that we're both German, both tired, both overwhelmed. I explained to her how to set up her SIM card and that she has no signal, cause we're in a beton bunker carpark.
    Next step: drive thru Boston. THANK YOU BERND! Bernd lent me his navigation system and it's a life saver. I think it would've taken forever without it.
    The hotel reached, checked in. It's nice, people are super friendly. Next I'll go to get some groceries and then fight sleep for a while to get on the right timezone sleep.

    Endlich, das erste Hotel erreicht. Die Abholung des Mietwagens war das erste Abenteuer. Die Dame überprüfte meine Buchung, schickte mich zu "Zone 2" und sagte mir, ich solle ein beliebiges Auto mit einem Schlüssel nehmen. Was?! Okay, ich ging zu Zone 2, 2 Frauen öffneten die Autotüren und suchten nach Schlüsseln. Ich wählte ein Auto aus. Eine der Frauen kam zu mir und fragte, ob sie dieses Auto haben könne, weil ihr gesagt wurde, sie solle sich das Auto mit dem Schlüssel aussuchen, und es sehe so aus, als hätte nur mein Auto Schlüssel. Ich sagte ihr, es täte mir leid, ich sei der Erste. Sie ging weg, kam mit dem Hertz-Mitarbeiter zurück, und er zeigte ihr, dass jedes Auto Schlüssel hat, die Leute verstecken sie nur irgendwo. Ich machte Fotos von meinem Auto und wollte losfahren. Sie klopfte an mein Fenster. "Entschuldigen Sie, können Sie mir mit meinem Telefon helfen?" Klar doch. Wir stellten fest, wir sind beide Deutsche, beide müde, beide überfordert. Ich erklärte ihr, wie sie ihre SIM-Karte einrichten muss und dass sie keinen Empfang hat, weil wir uns in einem Betonbunkerparkplatz befinden.
    Nächster Schritt: durch Boston fahren. DANKE BERND! Bernd hat mir sein Navigationssystem geliehen und es ist ein Lebensretter. Ich glaube, ohne es hätte es ewig gedauert.
    Hotel erreicht, eingecheckt. Es ist nett, die Leute sind super freundlich. Als nächstes gehe ich ein paar Lebensmittel einkaufen und kämpfe dann eine Weile mit dem Schlaf, um in der richtigen Zeitzone zu schlafen.    Læs mere

    Boston Sightseeing Start

    Short night. I woke up at 4AM. But luckily one of my favorite streamers was online and so I had entertainment. Around 6 AM I decided to start early, and checked the public transportation connection from the hotel. Next bus 7:18 AM. Got it. A daily city pass ticket costs 11$, but you can't buy it on the bus, so the driver let me in for free, and told me to buy it later. That won't happen in Germany. Now I'm waiting at the subway station.

    Kurze Nacht. Ich bin um 4 Uhr morgens aufgewacht. Aber zum Glück war einer meiner Lieblingsstreamer online und so hatte ich Unterhaltung. Gegen 6 Uhr beschloss ich, früh aufzubrechen, und überprüfte die Verbindung mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln vom Hotel aus. Nächster Bus 7:18 Uhr. Das war's. Ein Tagesticket für die Stadt kostet 11$, aber man kann es nicht im Bus kaufen, also ließ mich der Fahrer umsonst rein und sagte mir, ich solle es später kaufen.     Boston "Walk to the sea"

    From downtown I did the "walk to the sea". Passing several landmarks and signs, it goes from the State House (seat of the federal government) to the old harbor. Boston is a port city and everywhere in and around the water are small parks and sports facilities. You are accompanied by seagulls throughout. And there are many floating museums and landmarks, for example the old sailing ship USS Constitution and a WWII destroyer, the USS Cassin Young. And, of course, Red was there, too.

    Von Downtown aus habe ich den "Walk to the sea" gemacht. An mehreren Sehenswürdigkeiten und Hinweisschildern vorbei geht es vom State House (Sitz der Bundesregierung) zum alten Hafen. Boston ist eine Hafenstadt und überall im und am Wasser sind kleine Parks und Sportanlagen. Man wird durchgehend von Möwen begleitet. Und es gibt viele schwimmende Museen und Sehenswürdigkeiten, zum Beispiel das alte Segelschiff USS Constitution und einen Zerstörer aus dem zweiten Weltkrieg, die USS Cassin Young.     Boston Highlights

    As highlights I would like to mention the following things in particular:
    1. the Acorn Street, the most photographed street in America according to the internet.
    2. the Freedom Trail, a signposted hiking trail through Boston past all the sights.
    3. the Boston View, a 360 degree panoramic view on the 52nd and 51st floor of a skyscraper. With 38$ rather expensive, but great in good weather.

    over 500 pictures, over 27000 steps, over 10 hours walking, in total over 13 hours outside, over 1 hour bus drive, I've seen everything I bookmarked, an awesome cute bakery for lunch (the salad), and an Italian restaurant gem for dinner, Boston is beautiful - downtown, harbour, the beach, the people. I'm in love with a city!

    Boston Downtown

    Arriving in Downtown I was first pleased about the colorful mixture of new and old. My internet research had prepared me for this, but then to stand in front of a 2-3 story, hundreds of years old building and see only skyscrapers all around is impressive. And that doesn't happen only once in Boston.

Meine Internetrecherche hatte mich darauf vorbereitet, aber dann in echt vor einem 2-3 stöckigen, hunderte Jahre altem Gebäude zu stehen und rundherum nur Wolkenkratzer zu sehen ist beeindruckend.     Boston Castle Island

    Finally, I took the bus to Castle Island. A small bay that can be walked around completely, with an old fort from the time of the War of Independence, which was last used in World War II as a safe haven for the Navy. As a special feature, the airport of Boston is to be mentioned here, because the approach lane runs directly over the harbor and you can thus watch and listen to the big planes landing the whole day in 90 second intervals. Impressive, but also annoyingly loud.

    Zum Abschluss bin ich dann noch mit dem Bus zum Castle Island gefahren. Eine kleine Bucht, die komplett umwandert werden kann, mit einem alten Fort aus der Zeit des Unabhängigkeitskrieges, das zuletzt im zweiten Weltkrieg als sicherer Hafen für die Marine genutzt wurde. Als Besonderheit ist hier noch der Flughafen von Boston zu erwähnen, da die Einflugschneise direkt über den Hafen verläuft und man somit den ganzen Tag im 90 Sekunden Takt, den großen Flugzeugen beim Landen zusehen, und zuhören kann.     Goodbye Boston

    Time to leave the first stop. Today's journey will bring me north towards New England. I'll make a stop at a supermarket to fill the car with basics, and drive to Manchester for a short hike. Then I'll drive to Chester for another hike and the night in another hotel. Let's go!

    Hike: Tower Hill Pont Trail

    From Boston, I took Interstate 93, past many trees in red, green, and orange, north to Manchester in New Hampshire. There I had found the "Tower Hill Pont Trail". And thus a possibility to add New Hampshire as a state to my trip. The hike is about 7 kilometers long, has no special elevation changes and leads once around the beautiful lake. With luck you can see beavers and squirrels, but they are much shyer here and flee at the slightest movement. Which shows how little touristy this area is. I encountered a few locals who were all super friendly when they weren't secretly catching fish. Clear recommendation. For those interested, here the Komoot link to the hike.

    Von Boston aus ging es über die Interstate 93, vorbei an vielen Bäumen in Rot, Grün, und Orange, Richtung Norden nach Manchester in New Hampshire. Dort hatte ich den "Tower Hill Pont Trail" gefunden. Und somit eine Möglichkeit New Hampshire als Staat zu meiner Reise hinzuzufügen. Die Wanderung is knapp 7 Kilometer lang, hat keine besonderen Höhenunterschiede und führt einmal Rund um den wunderschönen See. Mit Glück sieht man Bieber und Eichhörnchen, doch die sind hier wesentlich scheuer und flüchten bei der kleinsten Bewegung. Was zeigt, wie wenig touristisch diese Gegend ist. Ich bin auf wenige Einheimische getroffen, die alle super freundlich waren, wenn sie nicht gerade heimlich Fische fingen. Klare Empfehlung.     Chester Stone Hearth Inn & Eatery

    After the hike in Manchester, I headed to the next hotel. One state over in Chester, Vermont, I'll sleep at the Stone Hearth Inn & Eatery. The car ride here was a dream. I passed up another hike to take the "through the villages" route. Scenically a dream - hilly, full of trees of all colors, but instead Trump signs bigger than the houses, huge USA flags waving in the wind, and pickup trucks. Since I try not to exceed the speed limit too much, I was honked at a few times by the last and looked at nastily. One must stand over it. After 3 hours drive arrived at the hotel I was friendly received in the parking lot by the owner and led around. The room is cute and I am now looking forward to a shower and then the delicious sounding dinner one floor below.

    Nach der Wanderung in Manchester ging es zum nächsten Hotel. Einen Bundesstaat weiter in Chester, Vermont, schlafe ich im Stone Hearth Inn & Eatery. Die Autofahrt hierhin war ein Traum. Ich habe auf eine weitere Wanderung verzichtet, um den Weg "über die Dörfer" zu nehmen. Landschaftlich ein Traum - hügelig, voller Bäumen in allen Farben, aber dafür Trump-Schilder größer als die Häuser, riesige, im Wind wehende USA-Flaggen, und Pickups. Da ich mich bemühe die Geschwindigkeit nicht zu stark zu überschreiten, wurde ich von letzten einige Male angehupt und böse angeguckt. Muss man drüber stehen. Nach 3 Stunden Fahrt angekommen am Hotel wurde ich auf dem Parkplatz freundlich von der Besitzerin empfangen und rum geführt. Das Zimmer ist niedlich und ich freue mich jetzt auf eine Dusche und dann das lecker klingende Essen eine Etage tiefer.    Læs mere

    After a night, with finally more than 6 hours of sleep, I was able to experience the best breakfast yet. Vicky received me with a friendly smile and asked what I would like to eat. Scrambled eggs, bacon, freshly baked toast 🤤 plus English tea. Next to me an elderly couple passing through. All got into conversation. Two hours later I knew all about this beautiful hotel, Vicky's children, and her life story. She is from England, and the couple loves "British Crime" and the history of England. Two hours flew by. They had so much to talk about. Now it's off to Lake George (NY), to the "Queen of all Lakes". 🤗

    Nach einer Nacht, mit endlich mal mehr als 6 Stunden schlaf, durfte ich das bisher beste Frühstück erleben. Vicky empfing mich mit einem freundlichen Lächeln und fragte was ich essen möchte. Rührei, Speck, frisch gebackenes Toast 🤤 dazu englischer Tee. Neben mir ein älteres Ehepaar auf Durchreise. Alle kamen ins Gespräch. Zwei Stunden später wusste ich alles über dieses wunderschöne Hotel, Vicky's Kinder, und ihrer Lebensgeschichte. Sie kommt aus England, und das Ehepaar liebt "British Crime" und die Geschichte Englands. 2 Stunden vergingen wie im Flug. Man hatte soviel zu erzählen.     Welcome to Lake George, NY. I drove straight to the hotel because it's pretty central and just wanted to let the front desk know I was leaving my car there, assuming it was too early to check in. The manager jumped right up and told me to wait a moment, he would check it out. One minute later he came back and said a room was ready and that was mine now. He asked me for my ID, stated I was German and told me he sold used cars from Germany to Ukraine from 2009 to 2014. Then he lived in Chile until 2019, and now lives in the US. In summer he works in the hotel, what he does in winter he does not know yet. He was born in India. A real globetrotter. He still gave me on the way to better make Couchsurfing in the future, so I could save a lot of money and would meet many nice people. He has on his Couchsurfing profile already over 150 5-star reviews and always has alcohol in the house. The man is 58 years old! 🤯 After that I went to my room, and was once again too stupid to open the door, as Bob, the janitor came jumped directly and helped me in. So I go in and out again to get the backpack out of the car. Can't get the door open again. This time Juanita, the housekeeping lady, helps me, she yells across the yard for Bob, who comes driving up on the golf cart. Before Bob arrives Juanita realizes what I did wrong and opens the door. 🙈 As always, everyone is super friendly, interested, and accommodating. I could get used to it.

    Willkommen in Lake George, NY. Ich bin direkt zum Hotel gefahren, weil das ziemlich zentral liegt und wollte an der Rezeption nur bescheid dagen, dass ich mein Auto dort abstelle, weil ich davon ausgehe, dass es zu früh ist zum Einchecken. Der Manager sprang direkt auf und sagte ich solle einen Moment warten, er würde das checken. 1 Minute später kam er wieder und sagte ein Raum sei schon fertig und das wäre jetzt meiner. Er bat mich um meinen Ausweis, stellte fest ich bin Deutscher und erzählte mir, er habe von 2009 bis 2014 gebrauchte Autos von Deutschland in die Ukraine verkauft. Dann hat er bis 2019 in Chile gelebt, und lebt jetzt in den USA. Im Sommer arbeitet er in dem Hotel, was er im Winter macht weiß er noch nicht. Geboren ist er in Indien. Ein echter Globetrotter. Er hat mir noch mit auf den Weg gegeben, in Zukunft besser Couchsurfing zu machen, damit könnte ich viel Geld sparen und würde viele nette Leute kennenlernen. Er hat auf seinem Couchsurfing Profil schon über 150 5-Sterne Bewertungen und hat immer Alkohol im Haus. Der Mann ist 58 Jahre alt! 🤯 Danach ging ich zu meinem Zimmer, und war mal wieder zu doof die Tür zu öffnen, da kam Bob, der Hausmeister direkt angesprungen und half mir rein. Ich also rein und wieder raus um den Rucksack aus dem Auto zu holen. Kriege die Tür wieder nicht auf. Diesmal hilft mir Juanita, die Housekeeping-Dame, sie schreit nach Bob quer über den Hof, der mit fem Golfkart angefahren kommt. Bevor Bob ankommt, merkt Juanita was ich falsch gemacht habe und öffnet die Tür. 🙈 Wie immer sind alle super freundlich, interessiert, und zuvorkommend. Könnte ich mich dran gewöhnen.    Læs mere

    This restaurant was recommended in one of the many Youtube travel videos I watched before the trip. I promised myself to leave my comfort zone during this trip and eat regional and traditional food as often as possible. So today: lobster for the first time ever. And it was good. I had white wine, castello del poggio moscato, with it. Super yummy. 🤤

    Dieses Restaurant wurde mir in einem der vielen Youtube-Reisevideos empfohlen, die ich mir vor der Reise angesehen hatte. Ich hatte mir vorgenommen, auf dieser Reise meine Komfortzone zu verlassen und so oft wie möglich regionale und traditionelle Gerichte zu essen. Heute also: Hummer zum ersten Mal überhaupt.
