  • Last day in istanbul

    September 30, 2023 in Turkey ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We had to leave the airbnb at 12 and our flight didn't come until 1am the next morning so we spent the day roaming around trying to find things to keep us entertained. We went to a museum which had an exhibit on the history of weights and measurements and Spencer finally got his hair fixed from when the incompetent barber in poland messed it up. Other than that we spent the whole day ordering tea from different bars and restaurants and then just sitting there for hours and hours.

Istanbul has been an absolute blast, I cant wait to come back one day!

  • Homeless night going to cyprus

    Oct 1–2, 2023 in Cyprus ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

Last night we had our second homeless night of the trip. Our flight to cyprus didn't land until 3am and we weren't able to find a good airbnb for last night so we slept at the airport. For the first few hours we just sat in baggage claim, I dozed off for an hour or so and when I woke up we were the only people in there which was super eerie. Eventually someone came and told us to leave so we went out into the main entrance and found that about 100 other people had also elected to sleep in the airport instead of getting accommodation! Sleeping in the foyer with all the other travellers felt way less sketchy and I managed to sleep soundly until 730 :). Spencer didn't really manage to sleep at all. We ubered to the airbnb around 745 and then waited at the beach while they cleaned it for us. The water was so great after the long night, we saw some people fishing which looked pretty fun so were gonna try find a rod to hopefully catch dinner for a couple of the nights. Were also hoping to get some goggles and find some crays. Another successful travel day, was far easier and less tiring than I expected :)).Read more

  • Chill times

    October 9, 2023 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Havent had much to update you guys on recently because we've just been vibing out and doing nothing (as you can see from the map ahaha). Spencer had an appalling cold all week so he's just been watching Seinfeld and coughing constantly and I've been taking myself to the beach and relaxing :). Ive started doing laps at the beach to get fit for Morocco which is definitely needed because I'm in catastrophically bad shape atm, much worse than I expected. Hopefully by the end of the month I'll be back to normal and ready to rip!

    Peace. 😎

  • Casino

    October 13, 2023 in Cyprus

It seems like the main reason anyone really comes to cyprus is because you can gamble here. There are a bunch of casinos all over the place and a really large proportion of the cars we see driving around are fancy sports cars. We've been quite slack so far and haven't done much touristy stuff so the other night we decided we'd go check out a casino (the only tourist attraction we know about in our area ahah). We walked because it was only about 1km away from our house and when we got close we saw there was a bunch of smoke billowing out of the top of the building, it almost seemed like it was a fire. When we got in we found out that youre allowed to smoke inside and literally everyone does but the room isnt smokey so I think all the smoke outside was literally just everyone's second had smoke being pumped out.
We weren't really feeling it at the start because barely anyone spoke English and it took us ages to figure out how to get chips n stuff but we stuck it out and thank god we did because we had a sick night! There were tons of waiters roaming around and if you call them over you can ask for anything you want to drink or eat and they'll go off and get it for you for free!! We ordered loads of cocktails and straight spirits and I also had like 5 fajita wraps. I had terrible luck and lost all my money ($20) in the first 30 minutes so I spent the whole night pretending to gamble and ordering as much as I possibly could. Even though I lost I walked away kinda feeling like I'd made a profit ahah. Spencer won about 50 bucks so he was even more stoked. I think for the rest of the trip we'll be going to the cas for a quick pretend bet and a free dinner :). Only thing that kinda sucked was that all the table games had $50 minimum bets so we could only play pokies and the automated roulette.

Had Arabic the other night, it was about $30 each to share that big banquet. Pretty expensive tbh but it was tasty

  • Castle on the mountain

    October 20, 2023 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Ever since we got here it has been my ambition to climb the big mountain that we can see from our balcony and today we finally did it! Theres an old castle at the top and I was certain we'd be able to get to it by walking straight up instead of following the path that goes around the back. Unfortunely, Spencer was really against this idea and because he had the backpack and I didn't want to carry my own snacks, we ended up taking the path. The castle was 12km walk away, and for 90% of it we were walking along a freeway, which sort of sucked. Eventually we found a trail which seemed to be a bit of a shortcut. We followed it but it ended up stopping about 500m short of the castle driveway entrance so we then had to struggle through spikey shrubs, steep, unstable slopes and tons of spider webs to get back on course. Once we were on the driveway, we learned that the castle was right next to a Turkish army base and that they don't let people walk through, you have to drive, so we spent an hour trying to hitch-hike until we eventually found a nice guy who agreed to drive us past the army checkpoint to the castle. At this point morale was pretty low due to the many hardships we had endured throughout our journey, but once we were at the castle we were well rewarded with a sensational view! We roamed around for a few hours and spent the majority of our time discussing how we were going to get back past the army base. In the end we were able to wave down a lovely couple from Denmark who agreed to drive us past the army checkpoint, they ended up taking us most of the way home. The walk up the mountain had left us completely shattered so it was a god-send that things panned out the way they did because I'm not sure we would've gotten home too easy. All in all it was an awesome trip :)). For dinner we went back to the casino, we've gone there most nights this week for free dinner, it's been awesome!!Read more

  • Last days and cool sunset

    October 23, 2023 in Cyprus ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Just a couple pics from the last few days. There's a building site next to our apartment that's really tall so we went there for a beer and a sunset, it was superb, too bad be kept forgetting to go there all trip ahaha. We also stumbled across a more touristy looking plaza area when we were roaming around looking for an extra suitcase yesterday. It was good to see that this town does have some nice tourism infrastructure, I was thinking it was a bit bleak. Getting free food was a great success this whole trip, we saved a fortune. Unfortunely we ended up getting a bit carried away on Saturday and ordered too many cocktails which meant we weren't gambling with our usual discipline. I ended up losing the $20 I had been stretching out all week but its fine it was a fun night.
    Excited for Egypt!!

  • First day in cairo

    October 24, 2023 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

When we first landed in Cairo it looked like tatooine from starwars, there was fog everywhere and everything was a muted yellow brown colour. Our flight took most of the night and morning so we hadn't slept and were extremely tired but didn't want to ruin our sleep schedules so we spent the rest of the day roaming around downtown cairo. My first impressions are that the people and traffic are quite chaotic and visually the city is very homogeneous. All the buildings are the same colour and style, it kinda seems like instead of hiring an architect all the builders just get told to copy whatever the building on the other side of the street looks like. Lunch was delicious, I had a curry and creamed rice and then went to bed at 6 :).Read more

  • Pyramids 1

    October 25, 2023 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Seeing the pyramids in real life was surreal. As soon as i got my first glimpses of them from the car I was blown away and that feeling didn't fade for the whole day. The way they set up the area is really cool, its like a theme park, you have to pay to get in but once your in your allowed to roam around completely unrestricted. There're a few guards making sure you don't climb the big ones but other than that youre free to go everywhere and do whatever you want. We spent hours roaming around all the ancient ruins, going inside old houses and checking everything for hieroglyphics. We also got to go inside the pyramids which was so cool! Once you get inside its very hot and stuffy and you have to do a crouching walk for most of it which i thought made it feel like i was a proper tomb raider. The pathways took us all the way into the centre of the pyramid and we got to see the actual tomb where khufu was buried. There was a monumental aura around the whole day which meant it was very hard to leave. For the evening we went to one of the rooftop bars next to the pyramids and watched the sunset. It was spectacular, definitely felt like a "ill never forget this" type moment. When I'm old and making a list of my top sunsets I'm sure this one will be on the list :).Read more

  • Museum and touching the nile

    October 26, 2023 in Egypt ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Today we continued sightseeing ancient Egypt with a trip to the museum. It was very crowded but was quite cool. It was filled with mummies and sarcophaguses and statues, some of which were from as far back as 3000BC! My favourite artefacts were the older sarcophaguses, theyre carved out of big singular slabs of dark rock and don't have much going on in terms of decoration but they're so striking to look at, i definitely understand why rick owens got one for his home. Other standouts were the statues of the egyptian gods (the hippo one was my favourite, she is the God of the home and parents would ask her to make sure their kids didn't get eaten by snakes and crocodiles), Tutankhamen's treasure (his sarcophegus is by far the best preserved, it's so shiny and has jewels and golden carvings all over it), and the massive mummified crocodiles. Once we left the museum we roamed around for a bit and realised that there isn't actually that much to do in cairo so we ended up just going back home. While we were roaming around I managed to touch the nile which was something I came to Egypt wanting to do. Unfortunately it's not very accessible so I had to run through a building site and touch it in a place where there was a bunch of rubbish but it had to be done.

On our last day we went to a restaurant overlooking the nile for lunch :).

A few concluding observations about cairo as a city:
The roads are extremely wide(sometimes 10+ lanes) and busy which makes walking around the city quite a nerve jangling experience.

The people in general kinda suck (always hassle you and just loiter around in intimidating groups) they actually weren't that bad to me tho because they were all a lot more interested in spencer with his long blonde hair. I found if I just walked 5m behind him I could avoid all the drama ahahah.

There are no vegetarian options to eat but the food is really really nice (kebab type stuff). One of the restaurants we went to served us a salad with the Salsa dressing in a cup, I think you're supposed to take a bite of your kebab and then take a sip of the dressing so that everything doesn't get all soggy which is pretty clever.

  • Casablanca layover

    October 28, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We had a 11hr layover in casablanca on our trip to agadir so we got to have a bit of a look around the city and it was super dope!! The air here is nice and cool and feels like down south air, it smells like fish and chips everywhere and the food is amazing :). We had some kind of slow cooked beef for lunch and it was easily one of the best meals we've had on the trip so far, and it also only cost $6! I saw a pretty sick right from the train, it was a bit fat but over head high and no one was out! Was so stoked to see an actual wave again its been so long!!! Being near an actual ocean definitely raised morale were both very excited to get in the water tomorrow :)).Read more

  • Anchor point

    November 3, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

Taghazout has been pretty sweet so far, the food is very cheap and good and our house is wayy nicer than I expected it to be :). Hiring surf gear here is ridiculously expensive so I had to buy a board, it's 6’3 x 18 1/4 x 2 5/16 which is pretty narrow but there was a bit of size today and it handled it good enough so I'm happy. The board cost me 400 bucks but fb marketplace is pretty active here so I should be able to sell it for a decent price when I leave. A few weird things about taghazout we didn't know is that they don't sell beer anywhere here, you have to go to a neighbouring town to get it and everything is cash here, there are no ATM's or currency exchanges which is so annoying. Surf was nice today it was pretty crowded but I managed to get a couple nice ones :)).Read more

  • The unthinkable has happened.

    November 5, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The swell was huge today but it was a bit windy so we went for a lago. When we got down to the point there were like 5 guys out but loads of people sitting on the rocks whistling and hooting when people got waves which was a bit intimidating. Everyone surfing was barrel dodging so hard even though it wasn't closing out. There was real potential for me to get the biggest and fastest barrel of my life so while I was waiting out the back I decided that if I got one that looked makeable I was gonna go at it as hard as I could. The wave I caught was real fast and wally so I just charged down the line, did a cutty to slow down and then pulled in but unfortunately it was a bit quick and I didn't make it ://. I was very sad that my board snapped after only 3 sessions but spencer said everyone on the beach went nuts when I pulled in and the guys next to him were like "damn that was huge!!" so I suppose what I lost in money I gained back in respect ahaha.

I feel like its also worth mentioning that the convenience store across from our house lets you buy a handful of lollies for like 17cents :))) they also sell the best muffins I've ever had so that's pretty sick.

Rip board u deserved better 😔

  • The actual unthinkable almost happened.

    November 12, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

This week the surfs been flat so we've had to find other ways to entertain ourselves. We've been watching movies n making lots of beats but we also went up to the skatepark a few times! Obviously not injuring myself was my main priority and I was being extremely careful but despite all that I still stacked it. I ended up twisting my ankle and spraining both my wrists :( I knew my ankle wasn't too bad but my wrists were really really sore that night and I was slowly becoming convinced that they were both broken. A panicked, sleepless night ensued which involved me reading through my entire insurance policy about 10 times and looking up moroccan hospitals. It's been a few days now and I'm happy to report nothing's broken and I'm almost completely better :))) phew! I would've posted this days ago but I knew how disappointed mum wouldve been if she read that I got injured skating again so I decided to wait until I was either better or in a cast ahah. Yesterday it was super foggy and cool which was really nice, we went to the point but couldn't see anything. While we were at the point I saw two dogs that were stuck together backwards. I was really worried and tried to organise a local vet to help them but I later learned that its normal for that to happen sometimes when dogs have sex so they were fine! Super gross tho!!! Last night we got some unhygienic street sandwiches for dinner where the guy just fully took our money and then touched our food with the same hands ahahaha it's all good tho I didn't get sick and it was delicious!Read more

  • We hired a car!!

    November 14, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

GOOD NEWS!!! We got a dacia sandero!! The day started a little rocky coz the car guy said he'd meet us at 930 and then didn't rock up till 11 which was super annoying and then out of spite we were very petty and thorough inspecting the car and signing the contract so we didn't really get going until 12. I drove first and it was very weird driving on the wrong side of the road and changing gears with my other had but after a while it got more normal and was really fun! We went for a surf at a place called spiders and then went to agadir to get beer. By the time we got back it was almost sunset so we enjoyed our first drinks in ages on the balcony which was superb. Our airbnb host came up to the balcony for a bit and told us that he had made us couscous the other night but when he came to give it to us we "weren't home" which sucked to hear coz I was home I just didn't answer the door coz it was late and I didn't know who was there ahahaha. Luckily he said he was going to make us more later this week :) Spencer drove for the agadir bit of the day which i found super stressful. We picked the dacia sandero coz James may loves them :).Read more

  • Drove north to check a bunch of spots

    November 15, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Second day with the car we drove north about 60kms to a surf spot that got recommended to us by the guys at one of the surf shops. The main reason we wanted to go this spot was so we could check all the bays for surf on the way. There were plenty of waves breaking the whole way up that had no one on them, mostly big fat bombie type beach breaks. The surf once again was very currenty, i found it almost impossible to get back out after I caught a wave which meant I had to walk around every time I caught anything. The spot was a right-hander but there were some sick lefts coming through occasionally, unfortunately I didn't get any of them :/. After the surf we stayed for lunch, the tajine I got was the second best of the trip! (The casablanca one was still wayyy better). The driving was the highlight of the day for sure, it was a very scenic route with lots of coastal views, the road was smooth and windy which made it super fun to drive on. Spencer got a speeding fine ($17), we suspect it was a scam coz they said he was doing 70 in a 60 zone but he was only in 3rd, oh well. For dinner we went to one of the fancy restaurants in taghazout, it was nice but no better than any of the other places we've been.Read more

  • Fun day at a gorge

    November 16, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today we went for another surf, this time at a place called boilers. It was alright, spencer was stoked with it he said it was the best surf of the trip. After that we drove abt an hour inland to a gorge called Paradise Valley, it was like a proper oasis with nice cool fresh water to swim in and lots of palm trees. The drive was amazing again with lots of great views and nice windy roads but this time the highlight was definitely the swim. There were quite a few people at the swimming area but it was actually better that way coz everyone was jumping off high places and doing cool stuff. I got to do a backflip off something high which I've been itching to do all trip :)). For the evening we went for a quick lago at boilers again and brought some beers for sunset, it was perfection :). This was our last day with the car, im so glad we got it it's been a blast!Read more

  • Too many lay days!

    November 27, 2023 in Morocco ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Things have settled down a bit the last couple of days. We don't have the car anymore and the surf has been flat so we've been chilling at home, drinking lots of tea on the balcony and going for plenty of swims at the beach. The other night our host made us couscous which was amazing, wayy better than the restaurants. We polished off the carton of beers way too quick and then had to ration the vodka which was a little stupid in retrospect because it just meant we had like 1 shot per day that always did nothing. We tried putting the vodka in the tea which was an awesome idea it tasted so good! I have a feeling most of the alcohol evaporated out tho :/. We've also been practicing our tea pouring heaps so that we don't embarrass ourselves at restaurants. It's a massive thing here to pour the tea from as high as you possibly can, the waiters are super good at it which you can see in the photo where the guy's pouring it without even looking 🤯. Honestly it's pretty ridiculous how they pour the tea coz its way too high and it splatters all over the table when they do it so my couscous and tajines always end up having a bunch of tea mixed in ahahaha. Taghazout is a bit boring when there's no surf so we've been getting a bit restless. Excited for snow tomorrow in prague!!!!!Read more

  • Brussels layover

    November 28, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

We had another long layover on our way to prague and this time it was in Brussels! It was a lovely day, blue skies, nice and sunny and all the trees were orange and losing their leaves, which made walking around the city feel very cosy and nice. Despite how vibey and comforting the city felt we still felt a bit out of our element due to the cold. It was 1°C all day and the chilly air seemed to just go right through my jumper and hit me, the worst part was how sore my hands got, they were stinging or numb the entire time. We spent the day walking down a few of the big shopping streets, checking out a bunch of landmarky looking buildings, enjoying some Belgian waffles (delicious but I had 2 and it made me feel sick), and going for beers in a few pubs. Probably the most interesting thing we saw was an "australian waffle" shop, which was the busiest waffle place we saw?!? We thought that was pretty weird coz in Australia waffles aren't really a thing and don't all the places there say they're serving Belgian waffles? We were very perplexed ahahaha. All in all it was a super duper cool day in a very lovely city. I'd totally go back but probs not this trip coz it was quite expensive. We left our bags in airport lockers for the day and when we came back they wouldnt open which was a total nightmare. Our flight was delayed so we didnt miss it but boy oh boy were we stressed for a minute there!Read more

  • Prague is great!!

    December 1, 2023 in Czech Republic ⋅ ❄️ -1 °C

First impressions of prague is that it's absolutely brilliant!! We both think it could easily become the highlight of our trip :) It snowed the day we flew here so I got up early the first morning and went straight outside to have an explore before the snow melted. It was a beautiful day and the sunny blue sky made all the snow covered buildings look so vibrant. I was having a lovely time walking around but unfortunately I bought a bag of chips to snack on which meant I had to keep my hands out of my pockets for too long which made them really really sore so I ended up having to rush home to drop the chips off. After that ordeal I knew I needed to get some warm clothes asap so I spent the rest of the day catching trams and looking in a bunch of shops all over the city. I ended up finding an awesome thrift shop where I bought two jackets and a pair of pants that all cost $9 each!! Gloves were harder to find, I ended up forking out $35 for those but they're very nice and warm :)) The next day we went out in our nice warm clothes to get some lunch, we got empanadas and a burrito then came home and had a nap. Weve found the daylight situation here is very conducive for arvo naps because it's completely dark by 4pm so it kinda feels like it's time for bed when it's still super early. After our nap I decided i wanted gingerbreads and eggnog, I was going to make make it all at home but they had ready to go stuff at the shops so I just got that. This turned out to be a mistake because the shop eggnog tasted so gross that we ended up tipping it down the sink. We couldnt end the day on that disappointment so we went out to a bar and tried some hot mead and grog (rum with hot water and lemon I think).
On our third morning in prague it was snowing again so we went out for a walk and ended up going to a rooftop bar where we sat and enjoyed an incredible wintery view and a few mulled wines. Best drinks we've had so far!

  • Playing in the snow

    December 3, 2023 in Czech Republic ⋅ ☁️ -2 °C

We were on our way out to go for an explore today when we noticed our apartments backyard was full of untouched snow! It was about 1ft deep so we decided it was the perfect opportunity to try and build a snowman. I was surprised to find that snowman building is actually really hard, I thought you just made a ball and then rolled it around until it got huge but the snow wasn't sticking very easily. In the end it took us close to an hour of compacting and foraging for accessories to finish but I was super stoked with how it turned out :). While we were in the yard I also made a snow angel. After we were done playing in the snow we went to check out a cathedral not too far from our house. It was -9° and we were covered in snow so it was a bit of a tough journey but it was so nice to walk through all the snowy trees and parks on the way. When we got there the church bells were playing which made the whole thing feel very Christmasy and special. On the way home we stopped by a fancy restaurant that looked like it served traditional czech food and ordered without looking. I got a bowl of small fried fish and spencer got a plate of raw mince, the waitress also gave us some free garlic bread which was much needed. I think she was worried we'd be mad once we saw how weird our orders were ahahaha. The food was actually really tasty all mixed together. Also, the beer here tastes like nachos which I really like 👍.Read more
