Sun Oct 2, 12:30 pm: Leaving Home

    2 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

I am finally on the road. Only 27 hours after I was supposed to be traveling!

First leg: Sunnyvale -> Los Osos by minivan.

But first, I gotta stop for gas. Filled up the tank and it was exactly $100.00. That's a good omen, right?!Leer más

  • Sun Oct 2, 3:45 pm: Highway 46

I took the scenic route to enjoy the view.

  • Mon Oct. 3, 6:00 am: All Aboard!

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 52 °F

The alarm went off ungodly early, but I had enough time for one last pre-trip COVID test (negative!) and a made it to the train with plenty of time to spare.

I was quite confused about picking which side of the train to sit on, because the car is connected so that all the seats are facing backwards. But I eventually got situated on the west side of the train. Once the sun comes up, I should have some stunning ocean views, even if I am looking at where I've been rather than where I'm going.Leer más

  • Mon Oct 3, 8:00 am: Pacific Surfliner

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Leg 2: San Luis Obispo -> Los Angeles by train

It turns out that I was confused about the train seat arrangement. Half of the seats face forward and half of them face backwards. By switching from the swoopy new car (named after Montana de Oro!) to an older train car, I was able to find a good seat on the west side facing forward. I'm going to chalk the confusion up to the incredibly early hour and lack of coffee.

This train route hugs the Pacific coast for about a hundred miles. The scenery isn't exactly stunning, but it is amazing how close you are to the water!

  • Mon Oct 3, 12:30 pm: Lunch in LA

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

We pulled into LA about 20 minutes late and I was absolutely starving because I had been up for hours with nothing but a little pastry on board the train to eat.

Fortunately the train station is about a 5-minute walk from an LA institution! This is the home of the French dip sandwich.

I walked back to eat in the private lounge in the train station that is reserved for sleeper car passengers.

  • Mon Oct 3, 1:30 pm: Olivera Street

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

I had a 7 hour layover, so after lunch I decided to explore the area around Union Station.

Union station is right across the street from the original main street in the Pueblo of Los Angeles. It exists today as a historic market.

However the roads nearby are no longer really paved with bricks but rather just painted with brick shapes on asphalt.

  • Mon Oct 3, 2:00 pm: Chinatown

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

A few blocks away from Olivera Street is LA's Chinatown. It seems smaller than San Francisco's, but still has some interesting landmarks. And it even has a statue of Bruce Lee.

  • Mon Oct 3, 3:00 pm: More LA Wandering

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

After Chinatown I headed over towards Little Tokyo. That was a bit farther away than I'd expected, and I wasn't really dressed for walking in the LA heat. So by the time I got to Little Tokyo I was tuckered out and was disappointed to find there wasn't really anything that interesting. Maybe I was only on the edges and needed to venture more into the neighborhood. But as I said I was tuckered out. So I just headed back to the train station to wait for the boarding.Leer más

  • Mon Oct 3, 6:00 pm: Southwest Chief

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Leg 3: Los Angeles -> Chicago

Around 5:00 we started gathering to get ready to board the Southwest Chief. Once I got to my little roomette I swiftly got my train shoes on and got myself situated to be comfortable for the next 2 days.

One unusual thing about this trip, is that my room is not in a standard sleeper car, but in what they call a "transition sleeper car". This means there are both passenger cabins and crew cabins in this same car. We are the first car behind the engine.

We pulled out of Union station right on time at 5:55.

  • Mon Oct 3, 10:00 pm: Barstow

    3 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌙 75 °F

I had dinner in the dining car (I forgot to take pictures of the food). When I got back to my compartment, my little bed had been all made up and was waiting for me.

I had terrible connectivity issues on this stretch of the rails so I couldn't upload my entries from this afternoon.

Our first and only fresh air stop of the night was in Barstow. I was expecting someplace hotter. And maybe someplace with more stars in the sky. But at least there were real bricks on the ground.

  • Tues Oct 4, 7:00 am: Morning in AZ

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 48 °F

As I slept we went through the rest of California, and almost all of Arizona. I didn't sleep great, but I never do the first night on a train. I was hoping that all that walking and such an early morning yesterday would have worn me out, but it didn't work well enough.

Suddenly they announced that it was now 8:15 a.m.. because we had crossed the border into New Mexico and are now on Mountain Time

  • Tues Oct 4: Amtrak trivia

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 50 °F

When I re-boarded the train in Gallup, I got on at the very last car. My sleeper is the very first car after the engine, so this gave me a nice walk through the whole train.

If there are no cars attached after the last passenger car, you can look out the back window and see where you have been. Sometimes there is a baggage car or some other car that passengers aren't allowed into as the last car on the train and so you can't see out the back window.

Fun fact: all trains that leave LA have a clear back window view, because the LA train station is a one way station. Trains either have to back in or back out, they can't go straight through. When a train is backing up, a crew member stands at the back door and radios to the engineer about obstructions and other issues that might arise. However, I have been on trains that left LA and then later had other cars attached at the back. So you can't be guaranteed the view out the back door for every train that originated in LA.

As I walked through the coach section, I realized that one of the cars was brand new, and one was much older. Amtrak is rolling out the new cars one at a time , so often trains have a mixture of old and new. Just like on the Pacific Surfliner where I started in a new car and I ended up sitting in an old car. Unlike on the Surfliner, The outsides of the cars do not look any different. However, the insides are very much improved. The new seats are leather while the old seats were cloth.

  • Tues Oct 4, 9:00 am: Breakfast

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

After Gallup. It was time to head to the dining car for breakfast. Due to the time change, breakfast was going to end an hour earlier than normal. Unfortunately, they were out of the quesadillas, which I haven't yet tried, so I went with the old standard: French toast.

Note that the coffee creamer is "made from cow's milk." I don't know why, but that just tickled me.

  • Tues Oct 4, 11:30 am: Albuquerque

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Albuquerque is long stop for Amtrak. It is on the order of 45 minutes. Which means you have time to go explore a little bit. However, if you don't make it back to the train when it is time to go, it leaves without you. There's a full size grocery store on a block from the train station, so if you are in coach, you can stock up on food. Or if you need to stock up on New Mexico chilies you can go there, as well.

We pulled in a little late, so I went for a very brisk walk for about 20 minutes. And then I loitered on the platform for over half hour, because we pulled out even more late. They have vendors selling jewelry and blankets and other souvenirs on this station platform. There were only a couple out today. It looks like there may be many more on the weekends.

  • Tues Oct 4, 12:00 pm: Train Station

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

The local Albuquerque train (that just operates within the city) is called the "Rail Runner". And it has a picture of a roadrunner on it. A very southwest pun.

There were also some private rail cars parked on a siding. I guess you can rent them and have them hooked up to an Amtrak train and go places in private style.

I took a picture of the back door of the train from the outside. Also, it it appears that Albuquerque is where they wash the outsides of the windows so hopefully we will get great views.

  • Tues Oct 4: 3:00 pm: Las Vegas, NM

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We had a very brief stop in Las Vegas, NM. Since nobody was getting on and nobody was getting off they just stopped the train, opened a door, looked out, and made sure that there wasn't a last minute passenger running for the train. Then we started up again.

I went to go look out the back door again. You just get a different view of the world from that angle. Now I'm sitting in the observation car. This is actually my first time sitting here on this trip.

Just when I think we are leaving the mountains and heading into the plains, we see some more striking mesas.

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

This is the last stop in New Mexico, and the last fresh air stop during daylight hours. The next fresh air stop will be in Colorado, but I'll be eating dinner so I won't be able to touch ground in Colorado. We will be in Kansas the next time that I could leave the train, but it will be in the middle of the night so I highly doubt that I will. That is another state that I will likely not set foot on.

This was a quaint little town with more genuine brick walkways.

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

As soon as we left New Mexico and entered Colorado, things started to get much greener, with the occasional brilliant yellow of fall colors. There's no orange or red yet. Just a hint of yellow to let you know that as summer is ending.

Sunset on the high plans is very impressalive.

And now, just at twilight, we can see rain falling on the plains in the distance.

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

It turns out I was wrong about my dinner reservation time, so I did have a chance to get off at the Colorado fresh air stop in La Junta. So now I have set foot in Colorado on this trip.

I must say that of all the Amtrak stations I have been in, the La Junta station looks most like the lobby of a prison.

While I was out there, I took the opportunity to take a photo of my window from the outside. Of course there's nothing in the window that shows that it's mine but I know that it is. Trust me.

    4 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

When we crossed into Kansas we lost another hour as we are now on Central Time.

We stopped briefly by these enormous grain silos. I tried to get a picture in the dark but as you can see it did not come out very clearly.

Once again I forgot to take pictures of dinner. I had the salmon. It was good but I think the steak the night before was better.

  • Weds Oct. 5, 8:00 am: Hello Missouri

    5 de octubre de 2022, Estados Unidos ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

As I slept, we passed all the way through Kansas. I actually slept pretty well, I tended to wake up when the train stopped rather than when it was moving, unlike the night before. That said, I was kind of groggy when I first woke up and forgot to take any pictures.

We had a long stop in Kansas City, Missouri. We were supposed to leave at 7:30, but it was after 8:00 before we finally rolled out. And then I rolled out of bed and headed off to breakfast.
