  • Wagga to Broken Hill

    29. maj 2021, Australien

A bloody long day. 11 hours and 870k of very open land and boring drive. Bloody cold start in Wagga this morning, took about 10 or 15 minutes to defrost windscreens etc. the ice on bonnet finally melted about 11am. We never saw the temp above 14 today. We do not intend doing this distance in a day again. I just needed to get bank on track with the schedule due to Vic lockdown. Off to Port Augusta tomorrowLæs mere

  • Broken Hill to Port Augusta

    30. maj 2021, Australien

After the hard slog yesterday, today was a bit of a leisurely stroll to Port Augusta. Staying at the Port Augusta sports club RV park ($7 per night for fully self contained vehicles). Had a quick look around the town. To be honest we could have skipped this place snd not missed anything. I have attached some random photos of the towns on the way and the countrysideLæs mere

  • Port Augusta to Ceduna

    31. maj 2021, Australien

Up at sparrow fart again, stunning dawn over Flinders ranges. About 30 mins out of Port Augusta came across the edge of Cultana Military training ground and appeared that an armoured or cavalry exercise had just been completed. The low loaders were turning up to pick up the Abrams tanks. Only 460+k to go today to Ceduna and ended up being a bit of a painful drive . Strong winds buffeting the side of the van causing a bit of wallowing. Slowed down and all was good. Played havoc with the fuel economy though. Topped up with the jerry to make it to Ceduna. 100l and 470k we get to Ceduna with about 20k left in the tank. We stayed in the Ceduna Foreshore Caravan park where I last stayed in 1989 when towing my parents van over to Perth. It has been done up now and a really nice park with double concrete pads. Had lunch at the Oyster Shack (it was recommended) and was great. Dinner at the foreshore hotel. Planning to get to Eucla tomorrow and stay at the old telegraph station. Hoping for complete off grid with no one around, clear skies and awesome star viewsLæs mere

  • Ceduna to Eucla Old Telegraph Ststion

    1. juni 2021, Australien

Left Ceduna about 8am, relatively boring drive except the bloody wind. Filled up at Nullarbor otherwise we would not have made it to Eucla. The roadhouses and Motels look the same as they did 40 years ago. Between Nullarbor and Border Village we experienced really strong winds and rain. This was where the road was closest to the Great Australian Bight. Border a town we got the third degree from the police even asking for fuel receipts to show we came via Broken Hill. All good though and they were very polite. Every copper on duty that I heard were either from England or Scotland. We headed down to the free camp at the Old Telegraph Station at Eucla. When we arrived only one other van in the site. 3 more arrived soon after. Really nice sites, you have your own area surrounded by dunes and quite secluded. The only shame tonight is we cannot have a fire as the wind is quite strong. Karen spotted the International Space Station ( or a UFO) ripping across the sky. Played around with iPhone 12 and GoPro taking night star shots. Really impressed with the iphone12. The photos attached to this are from. Iphone12 on a Mini tripod with 30sec exposure. I will keep playing am with both GoPro and iPhone. Unfortunately rain has come through, not heavy but enough to stop us sitting outside and it is getting cold. Heading to Balladonia or nearby tomorrow, about 500kLæs mere

  • Eucla to Balladonia Roadhouse

    2. juni 2021, Australien

Pretty boring drive today, Eucla, mundranbila, Madura, cocklebiddy, Caiguna then stopped at Balladonia Roadhouse and caravan park. Quite a cold day with squalls of rain. The only bit of interest is we are still on Australia’s longest stretch of straight road, 147K (90 MileC. Balladonia’s claim to fame is it was closest to where Skylab debris landed in 79. The local council issued a $400 littering five to NASA, apparently still not paid. Heading to Kalgoorlie tomorrow. I have never seen so many caravans in my life. • A Day in Kalgoorlie

    4. juni 2021, Australien

Spent the day looking around Kalgoorlie. First stop the SuperPit lookout. The pit is massive the massive trucks looks like worker ants. The museum of the goldfields has a vault downstairs that houses some very impressive gold nuggets. Next was Hannans Tourist Mine. Well worth the visit. Not quite sovereign hill but some really good exhibits. Had to visit the Kalgoorlie Two Up School. Still a ramshackle tin circle shed. Had lunch in the exchange hotel, food pretty ordinary. Visited Hay St, only one of the original Tin shed brothels left. We are off to Wave Rock tomorrow then Perth. I have been recording notes and a blog on my gopro but the microphone is crap. Will

Arrived at Wave Rock about 1pm. Lucky we did as we hadn’t pre booked. The place is now booked solid. The caravan site was a bit ordinary to get into, had to zigzag between low trees. Getting out tomorrow will be fun. I enjoyed the rock but way too many people. We came out again at night and played with the iPhone 12 nights shots of the stars with wave rock in the foreground. We used a variety of light sources for effect. Slowly getting betterLæs mere

Day 13 dropped the van off for the 10,000km service today and pick up tomorrow. Having a nice night in a hotel in the City. Had brekky in Fremantle then drove back to the city via Cottesloe, Obh, Swanbourne, Mt Claremont ( I grew up here ), Claremont , Dalkeith (jutland pde, mega rich houses). It was good seeing the old stomping grounds. I am really surprised the dodgy Davies road flats still exist and look as dodgy as they did in the 70s. • Paynes Find

    10. juni 2021, Australien

Day 14 - Off to Paynes Find

Caravan service was finished at about 11am, by the time we got there and connected up, we departed Perth about 12.30. 420k to Paynes Find and we wanted to be there by nightfall. On the way we passed the only Monastic town in Australia, New Norcia. Would have loved to spend more time exploring here but had to keep moving. It bucketed down for most of the way, only clearing up about 100k from the destination. Paynes Find is the closest town (not really a town, more of a roadhouse with a few accomodation dongas spread around) to my grandfathers first station - Thundelarra. We arrived at 6pm just on dark. The other reason why we wanted to get here tonight is we presented a copy of my grandfathers wedding photo to the owners of the Tavern/roadhouse. The wedding photo included Tom Payne who Paynes Find is named after (see photo in this section). Thundelarra is no longer a working sheep station but now a state conservation reserve. We have been emailing the ranger over the last year planning the visit and were intending to present another copy of the wedding photo. Have not been able to get hold of the ranger and it appears all roads to Thundelarra are now closed due to the recent cyclone and heavy rain. We will head to Yalgoo tomorrow then assess. We may have to skip Thundelarra this trip , bugger. More photos of Paynes find in the daylight tomorrowLæs mere

  • A Day at Thundelarra

    11. juni 2021, Australien

    Day 14 - a day at Thundelarra
Busy day. The Paynes Find Thundelarra road was closed due to the storms but the Ninghan Yalgoo road was open. It was raining when we left Paynes Find but cleared up as we approached Thundelarra. Just to put Thundelarra into perspective it was a sheep station owned by my grandfather and his two brothers from approx 1902 through to 1919, my father was born here on Feb 29 1916. It is no longer a working sheep station but part of the Karara range lands eco system. Bloody fantastic to see the homestead, schoolhouse and other buildings still standing. We presented the ranger with a framed copy of my grandfathers wedding photo from 1903 and a copy of the Beaton History (Land and Gold by. Ann McEvoy). Thanks Ann, some of this history would have been lost of it wasn’t for your efforts. By now my sister Christine, her husband Roger, their daughter Claire, her husband Phil and their children Have joined us so we have a mini convoy.
Funnily enough our cousin ( I have never met her) Madeleine Mackay (daughter of my fathers sister, Margaret) was here at Thundelarra only 4 days ago.
One of the buildings here is the oldest still standing shearing shed in WA. We spent a few hours looking around then headed to Yalgoo for the night spot. Pissing down again. The weather gods have not been happy with me. Visiting Yalgoo Museum tomorrow as it had family memorabilia there. Off to Cue tomorrow, only a short 200k drive (on sealed roads) to comtinue the family exploration.

  • Yalgoo Museum, Cue and Walga Rock

    12. juni 2021, Australien

Day 15 - Yalgoo Museum, Cue and Walga Rock

We commenced the day visiting the Yalgoo museum. The cot that grandfather built and has been passed down to
Grandchildren (Jill) is now housed in the museum donated by my Aunty Jean. Tgg hi e wedding pictures, certificates and other bits belong to Tiny Hope, my grandmothers cousin. I remember meeting Tiny when growing up. She lived in Yalgoo for many years and even in the 1960s had dirt floors. Headed off to Cue 200k up the road. Got to about 40k out of Cue and got stuck behind massive overloaded trucks carrying massive ore trucks up to the mines. The load was 8 m wide.

Dropped van off in the caravan park snd headed out to Walga Rock. It is the second largest monolith in Australia and has the largest collection of Aboriginal rock art. The interesting one is the drawing of a sailing ship that does not look like the other drawings.
We had a climb up the rock as it is only 45 m high, still a hard slog though. Stunning views.
I got some really good drone footage, just need to edit and post it. We were going to visit Big Bell Ghost town but getting late and would be dark by the time we got home so will visit tomorrow

  • Old Cogla Homestead

    13. juni 2021, Australien

Day 16 - Old Cogla Homestead.

Today is the day I have been looking forward to. Visiting the place where my father spent his teenage years. The old homestead is approximately 55k from Cue WA. Karen and I left Cue early and stopped just past Nallan homestead to play with the drone waiting for the rest to catch up. A Toyota Ute drive slowly past, stopped, backed up and pulled in. Out popped my cousin Desmond Beaton who I haven’t seen since mid 70s. The rest of the crew arrived and Desmond led a convoy to the old Homestead 40k down the dirt track (actually smoother than some of the highways I have been on). Glad Desmond was leading as we may have overshot it. It definitely wasn’t as it was 6 years ago when Jill (my cousin ) visited, no timber or corrugated iron anywhere. Des worked out that someone (maybe council) had dug a big scrape and bulldozed all the corrugated iron, timber and bricks from the chimney into the put and filled it in. Don’t know why. Found the front steps under a big bush that was not there 6 years ago. The back steps are facing the same way as the front, but we guessed that the excavator or dozer moved the back steps.

One of the other reasons to visit was to revisit the bent Mulga Tree. To recap ( and I will add the old photos), the first photo taken was in 1926 with my father (Ron), his sister Jean and Uncle Peter. The next photo (same people) in 1937 (or there abouts). My brother Reg, my sister Lyn and I recreated the photo on the tree in 1974. My other sister Chris with the tree circa 2006 and my cousin Jill (daughter of Jean) in 2015. The tree has not changed.
Unfortunately another task was to spread my cousins ashes (David Thomas, brother of Jill and son of Jean). Dave passed away Jan 21 aged 84. He loved the Bush and Cogla. He was born in Meekatharra hospital so it was decided that Cogla (the tree) was the most appropriate place to spread his ashes. Prior to the ceremony there no wind at all, it was very still, as soon as I put the urn down next to the tree the wind picked up. It was commented that maybe it was Dave saying good spot snd get in with it ( he was. Not one for ceremony) We had the ceremony at the tree and spread his ashes recording it so we can share with his partner Christine, brother and sister (Peter and Jill), cousins and nieces and nephews who could not make the trip. Ceremony completed we wandered the site (very disappointed they buried the remnants). I put the drone up and we identified the outline of the house, house yard and tennis courts. I will put some old photos of the house from 1937 and photos from 2015 for context. My Cousin Desmond was the last owner of Cogla Downs ( he sold it in 1979), to give you an idea is size, Cogla was about 700,000 acres. From the old homestead to the new is about 80k (still on the same property). While my family went back to Cue, Karen and I went on with Desmond to visit the second shearing shed of Cogla. This shed is 40k from the old and 40k from the new homestead. This was built in the late 50s/early 60s using pipe, steel and corrugated iron from the abandoned town of Big Bell, nearly 100k away. It should be note that this area has been sheep properties sine the turn of the century. They are all now either cattle stations or a mixture of working cattle station and tourist stays. Apparently the wild dog (dingo mixed breed ) is out of control. Des was raised on Cogla, the son of Uncle Alec and the last Beaton owner of Cogla selling it in 1979. He was telling us stories of bush life that wound probably never happier today. The two room tin shack on the photos we lived in by Bert Price and his wife Mavis. Bert was a Tobruk Vet from WWII. Today we would call it PTSD but back then these bloke just went bush. He was a loyal hard worker but occasionally he would go on a weeks bender with his Irish mate from the neighbouring station Thundelarra. During these times it is believed sometimes Mavus would go into the bush to escape Bert (only a guess). Once she didn’t come back. Her body was found two weeks later. Apparently when she went bush a huge rainstorm came through and she may have got disorientated.
It was fantastic catching up with Des and listening to the stories (Des you should write them down before they get lost forever).

We farewelled Des, he headed back to Meekatharra via Yarrabubba while we headed back to Cue. From Cue we drove out to the old Big Bell Ghost town. The only thing left standing ( not pilfered but the station owners) is the shell of the pub and the church. Putting the drone up provided a good view of how the town was laid out.

It was a full on day and I am glad I hog back k out to Cogla and the old tree. Pleased that we got to spread Dave’s ashes at a place he loved

Day 17 - Cue to Yuna

Uneventful trip. Stopped just out of Yalgoo to check out Jokers tunnel. Could not walk in as the floor was under about 6 - 8 inches of water and made the whole tunnel a mud pit.
We stopped at a free camp at Yuna. There is nothing in Yuna. The pub is shut and there is no general store. We corralled the vans to provide some shelter from the southerly winds. The winds abated about 6pm so managed to get the FirePit out, woohoo. Off to Monkey Mia tomorrow

  • Day 19 Monkey Mia

    16. juni 2021, Australien

Day 19 - Monkey Mia. Had a great day. At the first Dolphin Experience at 07:45am. There was over 100 people there. Should have waited for the second experience at about 09:30 as there was only about 40 people. You can go to multiple sessions so we did first and second. Last time I was here in mid 70s you could feed the dolphins all day. Apparently this was really bad for the babies as they could not suckle in the shallow water and there was a 50% mortality rate. Also you are not allowed in the water (unsupervised) within 50m of them. Apparently they can catch our diseases.
Went out to Shell Beach and Eagle Bluff for some great views. Finished the day sitting on the beach having a few drinks watching the dolphins swim a bit further out. A bit cold for swimming. This would be fantastic in Summer
