Mud Crab Mission

Mud Crabs were on my list when we returned to the NT and I had a secret spot I was sure would produce. We travelled out to the remote Cox Peninsula, down dirt tracks and out to the beach which leads to a tidal creek. We did not see another person the whole time we were out there which made it feel very remote and special. We camped right on the creek, launched the boat and set the crab pots. Driving up and through the mangroves was awesome, they are so green and lush and only accessible by boat. The boys built a motocross track in the sand and also really enjoyed racing hermit crabs while we relaxed in the shade, it was hot. We all had a great time cooking fresh mud crab for dinner while watching the beautiful sunset, it was spectacular! And very tasty 😋En savoir plus

Crab Claw Island

We got a tip about Crab Claw Island, so we decided to drop in and check it out. Brett and I both thought it was an island! And you needed to come by helicopter or boat, but it’s not.

We pulled up and got good vibes, right on the beach and a beautiful restaurant, what more could you want! Apparently midges 😬.

The first night we had a glorious sunset on the beach, eating the mud crab we had caught that morning and some cheese and dip. Then we had a movie night in the tent, one of our fav things to do.

Brett and the boys got out for an early fish the second morning. It was a glass off. An amazing morning to be on the water.

They came back from their fish and could not stop raving about what a good time they had and how many fish they caught. Every flick they got a snapper, queen fish, Trevally, Mackerel or long tom.

We cooked up some of the snapper, they were delicious.

Unfortunately, I got sick! A nasty head cold, but this did not stop me from dining out for dinner and lunch at the beautiful water front restaurant.

The only downside to this amazing place was the midges. We all got smashed. Luckily we had some amazing neighbors who gave us a ton of antihistamines to get us through. Poor Lachie coped it the most.En savoir plus

VoyageurOld wives tale that I have unfortunately have tested and it’s true! Midge remedy- in a spray bottle: 1/3 Dettol, 1/3 baby oil and 1/3 metho. I didn’t use the metho and went 1/2 Dettol and 1/2 baby oil and it really worked well. We keep a bottle in van now. I’d never heard of midges before we were attacked. It’s wet and humid weather that they love and they are bite and attack when sun goes down! 🥴

Heading Back to Queensland

The trip back to Queensland was not fun or exciting like our drive to Darwin.

I was sick as a dog with a horrendous cold and a very nasty cough. No-one enjoyed being in the tent or car breathing the same air as me. We made a few stops, but I barley had the energy to get out of the car.

We hit Townsville on Tuesday for a big day of shopping, ready to get back to Babinda and head off to the Cape on Friday.

We are all looking forward to a sleep in the van before getting back into the tent.En savoir plus

After 3 long days of packing in the rain, we were ready to hit the road.

First stop, Cooktown.

We found an amazing bush camp to base ourselves for a few days, but unfortunately the rain followed us 🙁. When we went to hit the sack, we discovered the tent had leaked! Lachie’s bedding was wet and we had a few pools of water under our beds. A quick mop up and then we were ready for bed.

Sun was predicted to shine for our day out at Cooktown, but it didn’t. It rained on and off all day, so we went back to sit in the camp kitchen and get dry!En savoir plus

Day 3: Cooktown to Hann (Morehead River).

We woke up to pouring rain, just what you want to hear when you are sleeping in a tent!

We waited a while, but the rain persisted. We ended up packing up a wet tent and bedding.

We drove until we found sun! A lovely camp by the river.

The kids made some pots and caught lots of live bait. They spent the afternoon fishing, they caught jungle perch and herring.

There was heaps of fire wood, so we cranked up a big fire, which Shaun joined us for 🤣.

Ben had a major rat issue, before we left it ate through his peanut butter, mouse trap, TV and multiple other items. The rat lasted 3 nights on the Cape Trip, at Morehead River Ben went to get something from his car, we heard him and Linda yell! He had thrown the rat from the car, hunted it down and cremated it! Quick lunch stop at the sExchange Hotel, then off to find a quite camp spot.

Another ripper spot, swimming, sand, rope swing. We are set.

On the 2nd day, Odie came back from a walk where he had rolled in human shit. Poor Ben was dry reaching as he had to wash the shit off his dog 🤣🤢.

We spent 3 nights here waiting for Jared and the others to catch us up. Unfortunately, on their way the radiator on one of the cars broke delaying their arrival.En savoir plus

Pennefather Beach Camp

Day 8: Weipa Caravan Park to Pennefather Beach

What an an amazing camp, right on the beach, aqua blue water, shells and fish! And that is only day 1.

The kids set up their camp, hammocks in the shade, I walked the beach collecting some great shells (helmets, nautiluses, unicorn horns, just to name a few) and Brett got a queeny.

Deer on the BBQ for dinner and then oyster sauce and panko crumbed fish. Delish!

Lachie and Payton, braved the bugs and darkness of the night and slept out in their hammocks. Brax prefers his creature comforts and stayed in the tent with Brett and I.En savoir plus

Another day in paradise. Today was Fathers’ Day, so Brett got bacon and eggs with a waterfront view for breakfast and then he spent the rest of the day fishing.

More shell collecting today and then lazing around in the water which was as warm as a bath. Bliss

Day 11: Pennefather Beach to Dulhunty River Crossing

A massive day! Pack up, 4wD, air up, shop, shower and start driving along the telegraph track.

We were straight into it, only a few kms down the track and we hit the first big obstacle. It was so much fun, a few cars even got air and multiple wheels off the ground.

We pulled up at a beautiful creek where we could wash the dirt and dust away.

Day 12: Dulhunty River to Canal Creek

Excitement plus today! First stop GUNSHOT

We all drove in expecting to watch some daredevils take on Gunshot and then we were going to take the chicken track around. Not long after arriving we discovered there is no longer a chicken track.

After a lot of debating and watching other people tackle the drop, Brett and Jared decided to take it on. The others drove back out to the bypass rd.

Jaw dropping excitement. Lachie the dare devil even went in the car with Brett. Brax and I were on videoing duties.

As Brett and Jared both went over the edge, I couldn’t help but let out a scream. It was so scary, but they made it unscathed. Thank god.En savoir plus

Last stop was Fruit Bat Falls. As we all got to the viewing platform and saw the crystal clear water we could not wait to jump in. The water was blissful and warm.

Elliot and Twin Falls

Day 13

First stop on today’s itinerary was Elliot and Twin Falls.

Unfortunately, it was cloudy and raining, but the falls were still spectacular and the water was so warm.

We spent a few hours exploring the falls and swimming up the river and into the falls.

The kids, big and small all enjoyed the rock jumps.

Oh Faaark!

Day 13: Canal Creek to Nolan’s Crossing

We were all fresh from our swim at Twin Falls when we hit Sam’s creek water crossing, not even 2kms from our camp.

Our car was in the lead, I jumped out to film. Brett dropped into the water crossing and the car started to stop. Oh Faaark! We were stuck, the water was half way up the car and we were not prepared.

Brett and the kids climbed out the windows, Ben and Jared came running and Tom took another track around to get ready to pull us out!

The water leaked in and was above the seats, everyone was running around grabbing straps and shackles and after 10 very long minutes we were out!

Lachie opened the door and the contents of our car along with a lot of water came gushing out 😬.

The moment of truth was starting the car, it started, phew.

A quick dip to calm the nerves and wash off the sweat and then we were onto the next challenge.En savoir plus

Nolan’s Crossing

Day 13: continued

Day 13 was a long day, we left camp at 8am and we got to Nolan’s at 3.45pm. Barley 20kms from last nights camp.

Our aim was the ferry, we realised quickly we were not going to make it today.

Not a bad place to spend the night. The kids had a ball swimming, rope swinging and tree jumping until the sun set. It was our last night together, so there was a few celebratory drinks had around the fire.

When we woke in the morning, we were afraid we celebrated to soon as the car would not go into gear! Brett put it in 4WD and we were determined to make the ferry before needing the tow truck. Brett was trying his best not to stop, but a wrong turn put an end to that idea. Luckily for us, after a few choice swear words the clutch started working again. Day 14: Nolan’s Creek to the Tip!

We did it! We made it to the tip. 2 hiluxes, 2 Dmaxes and 1 Triton.

A broken radiator, a smashed sidestep and one sunken car. We didn’t fare to bad.

Now to relax for a few nights at Alau Beach Front Camp.En savoir plus

Day 15, 16, 17, 18

A few days of rest. We were all exhausted from the last few days on the Teletrack.

Brett and I had the small task of cleaning up and trying to dry the car. We thought the wet car smelt bad enough, then we discovered the eggs that had cracked, gone off and magnets that had started to grow in the bottom of the bucket 🤢, these smelt worse!!

Ben set up the TV for footy, MMA and movies. He also set up a lolly eating comp and a cold rock ice cream bar.

Arvo visits from some very friendly Brumbies was also pleasant surprise.En savoir plus

Day 17:

We finally had enough energy to leave the camp ground. We checked out a few spots, got hot chips and were back at camp to relax again in the arvo.

Day 19: Alau Beach Camp to Jardine River Ferry

The day started off nicely, Ben had caught a shark last night and the boys filleted it up this morning.

We got coffees and frappes and headed to Mutee Beach. We had planned on staying, but it was quite windy. We explored the headland and headed out to the Jardine River for lunch and a game of bowls.

As we headed back out towards the ferry, the car started to sound funny. The exhaust pipe had snapped off the engine. Luckily Ben was there to tow us to the ferry and camp ground.

Brett and Ben scavenged through the local tip to find parts to fix the car. Not what they wanted to spend the evening doing 🙁. They did a great job patching up the car so it was drivable.
