  • Crazy trip so far

    11. maj 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

Bonjour! This will be brief...at sea for 11 days instead of 6 due to high seas and wind in port of Ponta Delgado, Sao Miguel, Portugal. Finally arrived in Brest, France this morning. More problems to get off the ship. Greeted by rain and we are borrowing Wi-Fi in a beautiful gracious hotel lobby. The wine is great!!! Brest is a very modern city with vintage touches like cobblestones along the streets. It was bombed to ruins in WWI so much of the area has newer concrete buildings. Next visit is a remaining guard tower and museum along the water if we can find it! Dan has been taking bridge lessons on board, has mastered the high ropes course and we have screamed our way down the big slides. Lots of good shows and music so far. Doesn't sound very exciting but we are having fun and look forward to more in the next 3 weeks.Læs mere

  • Southampton, England

    12. maj 2017, England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Immigration was a mess! Got off the ship after 2 hours in line. But enjoyed walking the medieval walls of the old town, stopping at a pub for a pint and drinks later near the water. Southampton was the point of departure when my dad sailed to LeHavre, France during WWI in 1918. Later in our trip we will visit Flanders Fields in Belgium and retrace the troop movements based on Dad's diaries and an old map found in his belongings. Unfortunately, our ship is having electrical/propulsion problems so we will not put in at Zeebrugge, Belgium and will sail directly to Rotterdam. Disappointed, but Dan and I will spend 2 days in Bruges later this month. Tally ho!Læs mere

Having trouble with internet connection here. Will update later. All is well. Enjoyed the day walking the medieval walls of the old town and drinking a pint or two of ale. Ship is having problems so we are skipping Zeebruge and will sail directly to Rotterdam. We are returning to Bruges later this month by car.Læs mere

  • Side trip to Delft

    14. maj 2017, Holland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Sunday morning - Happy Mother's Day to all - Dan and I took the Metro to a small town north of Rotterdam and while waiting for a bus to Delft, we popped in on a Catholic service (and to use the WC). So glad we got away from the crowds to visit the old area of Delft. Now if we can find the train/bus station again we will sail away for Copenhagen at 6 pm. Back in Rotterdam, we hope to find the outdoor Swan Market - food trucks, vintage items, etc. My kind of place! Happy Sunday!Læs mere

  • Copenhagen between cruises

    16. maj 2017, Danmark ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

While waiting for cruise 2 to the Baltics, we are doing a quick tour of Copenhagen and on a mission to find our hotel for later this month. The hop on hop off bus is a relaxing way to preview the city and stop at several places along the way. Still loved Rotterdam and Delft the best, though. Clean, friendly and love their football/soccer. The local team won the championship for the first time in 18 years. The celebration was awesome - lifeboats shooting their form of "fireworks" beside the bridge, cyclists and walkers cheering, horns honking for hours. We made sure to be out of the train station before the game ended. Coming back from Delft, we had ticket problems because the change machine was, broken and our credit cards weren't accepted because we didn't have pin numbers. Funny part is we used our card to buy the first tickets on the same line! They let us into the station but we had to sneak out right in front of a line of policemen staging themselves for the post-game celebration. Got out of there just in time and walked to the Swan Market, a local gathering of artisans, good trucks, music, and vintage goods. Dan had his first experience with European bathrooms with no privacy! I had warned him but his reaction was priceless. All is well and we still having a ball.Læs mere

  • Rostock and Warnemunde, Germany

    17. maj 2017, Tyskland ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

On our own today. Took a train and tram in Rostock to just walk around the old town. At noon we are backtracking to St. Mary's church for a short organ concert and service. The church dates back to the 13th century and is under renovation but is still gorgeous. Everything is printed in German so a little language barrier. The nave and stained glass windows must be among the highest in Europe.Læs mere

  • Tallinn, Estonia

    19. maj 2017, Estland ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Unexpectedly, rented bikes for the day to explore the old town which is high above the city, paved in cobblestones and very crowded today. Five cruise ships in town and the first beautiful day of spring weather in this area. Can't wait to get away from the tour groups to cycle through some local greenspaces. Having lunch at Mad Murphy's Irish pub, local beer and our own version of the Mad Murphy's, Pete and Jean Murphy, our neighbors in NY. Hope everyone is enjoying lovely spring weather.Læs mere
