    Merdeka Square

    April 13 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We walked from Chinatown across the "River of Life"; a city core industrial area that has been rehabilitated and there was a nice walkway both sides; surprisingly deserted feeling with no cafes open for an iced coffee which we were in need of already! We carried on to Independence square where Merdeka was proclaimed in 1957 when the British agreed to an Independent Malaka (precursor or Malasia) after the first democratic election with the People's Alliance Party getting more than 80% of the vote. The large square of lawn used to be the cricket field for the nearby Royal Selegnor Club next to St Mary's cathedral. We had an ice cream/iced coffee break at a nearby McDonald's; It's interesting how fast food adapts to the culture with fast food Nasi Lemak on the menu.Read more
