      Big-eyed little primates

      This is the Philippines tarsier. It's a very small primate living on the islands of Bohol, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. It can only be found in the Philippines. Tarsiers of two different subspecies can be encountered in Sulawesi and Sundaland. Tarsiers are only 9-16 cm long.

      We met these little guys on Bohol, where you can find them in a tarsier sanctuary. Tarsiers are an endangered species. Mainly due to habitat loss in the wild, pet trade and predators like cats. In order to preserve the tarsier for future generations, the Philippine Tarsier Foundation runs a tarsier sanctuary near the town of Corella on Bohol. The tarsiers live in an enclosed space in the forest where they're safe. As they can jump up to 5 metres, they can leave the sanctuary to hunt.

      When visiting Bohol, you often read about tarsiers being the world's smallest primates. I did some research and unfortunately, that's not true, even if it's a cute thought. The world's smallest primate is the pygmy mouse lemur, which is living in Madagascar (it's very cute, too).

      Tarsiers feed on live insects, for example spiders, beetles, termites, cicadas, ants, moths, caterpillars, crickets, grasshoppers, cockroaches, walkingsticks and even praying mantis. The cute little primates can only get one baby per year and their babies are the biggest primates at birth when considering mother to baby ratio. We were really touched by seeing those cute big-eyed creatures up close and we hope they will survive and thrive thanks to the conversation work being done.      Read more

      Das Kankanaey Volk in Sagada, einer Stadt in der Bergregion Luzons, hat eine besondere Art, den Verblichenen die letzte Ehre zu erweisen.
      Die Särge werden nicht vergraben. Sondern an besondere Plätze gebracht, die sich ÜBER der Erde befinden. Man glaubt, je höher der Sarg platziert wird, desto schneller kommt der Verstorbene in den Himmel, so erzählte uns ein Philipp. Man spricht deshalb von den "hanging coffins" von Sagada. Die Särge hängen an den Felswänden der Berge, an verschiedenen Stellen um die Stadt. Manche vereinzelt, manche in Gruppen. Manche intakt, manche mittlerweile kaputt. Da kann man dann die Knochen sehen.
      Es gibt auch andere Grabstätten. Eine Höhle beispielsweise. Das Prinzip ist dasselbe. Die Särge werden so hoch wie möglich unter der Decke platziert.
      Es handelt sich hier übrigens nicht um Leichtbausärge, sondern (weil es ja nicht schon schwer genug ist, die Dinger hoch zu bringen) um dicke ausgehöhlte Baumstämme. Vielleicht täusche ich mich und es gibt keine verrückte kletter-schlepp-Aktion, sondern nur einen richtig starken Monster-Philipp mit Armen so dick wie... Äh, naja, sehr dick eben, der die Särge hoch wirft. Der sogenannte Sagander. Vielleicht aber auch nicht.

      Abgesehen von Sagada waren wir in Banaue, wo die ältesten Reisterrassen Philippiniens sind. Cool, sowas Mal ohne Wolken, Nebel und Matsch zu sehen. Man hat sie wohl 2000 vor Jahren angelegt und sie werden größtenteils immernoch bewirtschaftet. Es heißt, dass eine Einzelperson diese Form des Ackerbaus aus der Indochinaregion mitbrachte. Diese Person muss entweder sehr fleißig oder sehr überzeugend gewesen sein. Gute Arbeit.

      In Baguio waren wir auch noch. Das ist bekannt für seine Erdbeerfelder. Und bei uns für eine der enttäuschendsten Unterkünfte. Details werden gerne erspart 🙃      Read more

      Byebye Vietnam

      Der Monat ist vorbei. In Vietnam gab es viel zu sehen und zu erleben.
      Wir haben eine Millionen Tempel und Anlagen gesehen, tausende lustige dreickige Hüte, alte Ruinen, Bambuswälder und Dschungel, in den Bergen dem Wetter getrotzt, nach magischen Schildkröten gesucht, Vietcongbunker gefunden, die Gräber der Kaiser durchstöbert. Wir wissen, wo der Reis herkommt, was das Geheimnis hinter der Koreander-Verschwörung ist, dass in Vietnam alles etwas kleiner ist und dass es hier zu viele Briten mit Sonnenbrand gibt (echt jetzt, was ist los mit diesen ganzen Engländern...).
      Die kleine Laurisauri hat sich ein Zertifikat im Flipflop-Matsch-Bergwandern verdient und ihren Fahrradführerschein gemacht.
      Ich bin zum Pho Connoisseur und Experten für vietnamesische Kultur und Legenden geworden.

      Leider endet die insgesamt sehr schöne und entspannte Zeit mit einem ärgerlichen Kraftakt. "You had one Job..." hätte dieser Post genauso heißen können. Denn dieses #&/@¢%#grrrrrr Todesgespann an COVID-Testfutzis hatte absolut keine Ahnung, wie man Testergebnisse auswertet. Verflucht seien sie! Und selbst nach toben und zetern und Beispielfotos aus Testanleitungen waren sie nicht bereit, uns das Zertifikat zu geben. Jaja - wir sind positiv. Am Arsch! Am liebsten hätten wir hier alles abgerissen. Uns blieb nichts anderes als nochmal einen Test zu zahlen, dieses Mal woanders. Danach hieß es offiziell, oh Wunder, negativ.

      Es gibt sehr nette Menschen hier, aber einige lassen einen vor Wut kochen.
      Menschlich würde ich das Land keinem empfehlen. Das Land selbst ist sehr sehr schön und das behalten wir auch in Erinnerung!

      Peaceful lake day

      Northern Vietnam consists mainly of mountains. Cute looking karst mountains covered in trees and other greens. They kinda look fluffy. Between the mountains there are valleys. Even more fluffy. Green and lush valleys where people grow rice, corn, bananas, indian shot, and some kind of reed or grass we didn't know but we think it's used for feeding animals.

      Driving through northern Vietnam feels like this: up the mountain (use lower gear, steep curvy road) - down the mountain (use brakes, steep curvy road) - through the valley and the village (drive slowly, there's so much to see, sometimes animals are blocking the road) - and up the mountain again. ☺️

      We spent a chill day at Thang Hen lake and went to Angel Eye Mountain, where we saw two buffalos wallow in the mud. It's super peaceful in those little villages. Fun fact: strawberries grow here! Real forest strawberries, just like back home! 😃      Read more

      Ban Gioc Waterfall & Tiger Cave

      We went to Ban Gioc Waterfall, also know as Detian Falls, which is located directly at the border between Vietnam and China. It is the 4th largest waterfall along a national border, after Iguazu Falls, Victoria Falls, and Niagara Falls. That's kinda crazy because there's waterfalls are huge.

      Ban Gioc Waterfall is 300m wide, consisting of a main waterfall and a subsidiary waterfall. I read that during rainy season when the water is at its highest, the two waterfalls merge together and form one big waterfall.

      After the waterfall we went to a cave, which is called Tiger Cave in Vietnamese. The cave is stunningly beautiful. There's one stalagmite they call the Lotus Stalagmite because it resembles the shape of a lotus flower turned upside-down. One thing I saw for the first time in this cave were underground terraces, formed by a a river flowing through the cave.      Read more

      Ma Pi Leng Pass

      There are many winding mountain roads in northern Vietnam. Some of them we explored by "motorbike". Here in the north, the "motorbikes" are semi-automatic scooters which really helps with the steep roads.

      Ma Pi Leng Pass is a very beautiful road connecting the towns of Dong Van and Meo Vac. When you stop near one of the villages here, you can see the clouds climbing up between the hills, flowing through the valley and continuing their way up to the mountain top. It looks peaceful and mystical.

      The road was first built by Yao, Hmong, Tay and Lolo people, ethnic minority groups who live in the mountains. Nowadays, the road is in a very good condition. There's only one big problem: landslides, probably mainly happening during rainy season. Landslide sometimes means very big rocks just fall down onto the street and sometimes it means there's a river of mud running over the road. Really wet, deep mud, not solid enough to walk on.

      The day we left the very north, there was a landslide which covered the complete road, not even SUV cars could drive through the mud. Luckily, after about an hour of waiting an excavator showed up to clear the road.      Read more

      Da war dieses kleine Restaurant-Bar-Cafe-Ding an der Straße.
      Wir sehen uns hin. Ein Junge mit Goldkette, circa sechs oder sieben Jahre alt, bringt uns die Karte. Wir suchen aus und zeigen in der Karte auf Worte, die wir bestellen wollen. Entweder sagt er ja oder nein. Ein kleines Ratespiel, was es gibt und was nicht.
      Er ist auch derjenige, der die Bestellung bringt und am Ende zusammenrechnet und abkassiert.
      Als wir gehen haben wir immernoch keinen Erwachsenen gesehen. Nur noch seinen Bruder, ca. zwei Jahren älter und ein Mädchen. Braten gerade ein Spiegelei am kleinen Gasherd.

      Die Kinder haben den ganzen Laden geschmissen. Es gab, was sie kochen konnten. Irgendwie geil 😃      Read more

      Da drüben ist China

      Weiter von Sa Pa durch die Berge.
      Die meisten erzählen, sie machen den sogenannten Ha Giang Loop. Damit ist gemeint: mit dem Motorrad einen Rundweg durch den Norden machen, typischerweise drei oder vier Tage. Die Umsetzung ist für viele: Nimm dir einen Guide für 60$/Tag, setz dich hinten auf sein Motorrad, schau ihm beim Fahren über die Schulter, lass dein Gepäck mit dem Auto transportieren. Dann hat man den Norden gemacht. Das ist abenteuerlich.

      Ist es nicht. Es ist kacke. Deswegen machen wir das nicht. Pöh.
      Selber machen ist mehr unser Ding. Außerdem nehmen wir uns mehr Zeit, setzen die Etappen wie wir wollen und fahren weiter nach Westen. Dann kann man öfter links und rechts schauen, von den Örtchen wo man übernachtet aus Tagestouren mit kleinem Rucksack machen und dann weiter der Route nachgehen.

      Es ist ein sonderbares Gefühl, am nördlichen Punkt Vietnams zu stehen und auf den Berg gegenüber zu schauen. Getrennt durch ein kleines Tal mit Fluss. Und dann beginnen Stacheldrahtzaun, Wachtürme, Überwachungskameras. Da drüben ist China.

      An einer anderen Stelle kann man sogar bis zum Zaun laufen, wenn man durch ein paar Büsche geht den Hang hinauf.
      Die Bergregion ist schön. Ein bisschen wie bei uns Zuhause, nur mit mehr China.      Read more

      Rest day = best day ❤️

      After nearly freezing to death in Sa Pa, we took the bus to Ha Giang (what a hell of a ride, 8 hours instead of 5:30, they took many detours to load and unload goods) and decided to have a rest day to dry our stuff and to recover and warm up.

      Benni caught a cold so we didn't plan anything for the day. We were super lucky with our homestay. Our host Lan was warm, welcoming and fun, what a sweet lady! 😍 She took us on a trip with her dad and her sister. We drove to a nearby village and had a picnic on the stones in the middle of the river, in front of a beautiful waterfall. Some Vietnamese guys were bathing in the river (see video 😅).

      Lan and her family were super friendly and so much fun. Her dad was a really cool guy who seemed to enjoy the trip a lot. In the evening, they invited us to share burgers with them. And everything was for free 😶. They were such a nice family. In the end, rest day was the best day! 😃      Read more

      A muddy life

      Vietnam is the second largest rice exporter (after Thailand) in the world. In 2021, 43.88 million metric tons of rice were grown and harvested in Vietnam. The main regions for Vietnams rice prodution are the Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta.

      In the region around Sa Pa, from what we've seen most people seem to be reliant on rice cultivation as a source of income. We saw lots and lots of rice paddies. Where the rice doesn't grow due to steep terrain, people plant corn. It looks beautiful as long as there's no rain or fog (we lived inside the clouds and it was raining most of the time 😅).

      But that doesn't stop people from working on the rice fields, wearing gummy boots and whole-body plastic bags to protect themselves from the wet and cold. Most of them still look like they took part in the Tough Mudder obstacle course or as if someone pushed them into the mud.

      Most of the rice cultivation work is done manually. It feels kinda crazy from our perspective. It's so much work, planting the rice into the wet fields, harvesting, drying, preparing the fields and whatever else has to be done - it's all done by people. And water buffalos. And sometimes, if they're lucky, they've got a small machine helping them to prepare the paddies.

      And in the end, they sell the rice for a very cheap price. I really can't wrap my head around this disparity between the importance of food and the little value we attribute to the people who feed us.      Read more
