We'd planned to visit our son and his family in Ackworth, Yorkshire, UK, in 2020, but the trip was cancelled due to the pandemic. Now that we can travel, we are staying in England for the summer. Читать далее

We went to this town because it has the same name as my sister! It is a charming market town of 30,000 people, just the right size. There seems to be a lot to do here: cultural events, history, shopping, good restaurants, golf, and a horse racecourse, plus parks and nature walks. We saw a lot of new residential development that blends with the old architecture.Читать далее

Beverley's Marvelous Minster

The twin towers contain 10 bells that chime the quarter hours and the 7 ton "Big John" that strikes the hour. The minster has a very active bell ringing group.

The interior is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in England. All the stone came from the same quarry, which is still used today for the restoration work, making it look seamless despite taking 200 years to build.

The interior was used in filming part of the TV series, "Victoria" including her coronation and wedding.Читать далее

York City Walls

We took a day to go back to York to see some more of that beautiful old city.
There are more miles of intact walls here than in any other city in England.

There were Roman walls here in 71 AD but they've been rebuilt over the centuries by whomever took power. What exists today were built in the 13th -14th centuries.

There are four main gates, called "bars" where traffic can drive through. Originally they were used for toll collecting, or for defense. The strongest and tallest one is Monk Bar, named for the monastery that used to be where York Minster now stands.

Walking around the walls gives a good view of the city, gardens, and the York Minster.Читать далее

Since the late 1890s-1900s cat statues have been put up on rooftops, eaves, doorways, and windowsills. The tradition may have started to scare rats, but no one knows for sure. In York, cats are considered lucky. There are over 20 of them, and I was lucky enough to spot a few, although I had a map of where to look.

Then in the evening, we went to an Evensong at York Minster. The singing was beautiful. Usually the singers are all male, but in this one there were 2 young ladies.

We had visited a few old churches in the past week, and in particular, one that seemed very moldy. I was coughing so much that I came down with laryngitis. I had to direct our way to the next stay with sign language! One finger means take the first exit from the roundabout, two fingers means take the second exit, etc.

We are in a beautiful two bedroom, two bathrom farm cottage rental through Airbnb. It's a short distance from the coastal town of Scarborough which we hope to see at some point. We stocked up on some soup, and are hunkering down. At least we can rest with no pets to watch over, and we are very comfortable.Читать далее

After a few days of rest, my voice came back, although I now have bronchitis. But lying around is getting boring, so we went out for the afternoon.

Flamborough Head is a projection of pure white chalk cliffs on the coast of Yorkshire, overlooking the North Sea. Many seabirds make their nests on the cliffs, including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and kittiwakes.

There are two lighthouses. The older, built in 1669, is the oldest complete lighthouse in England. The newer one was built in 1806 and is still working.Читать далее

This little village on the Yorkshire coastline used to be a smuggling hotspot. It's a beautiful bay from a distance, so we headed down for a better look. We should not have done this! It was a steep, one-lane street used by two-way traffic, mostly delivery trucks. Scary! So we got out of there and didn't see any of it.

We are in the twin villages of Marton-cum ("with")-Grafton taking care of a 1-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Mabel. She is very active and loves people of course. Everyone knows her!

We are in Marton, where there is a primary school, church, award-winning pub, shop, and village hall. In the shop are lots of fresh vegetables, meats, and a bakery. We visited with the shopkeeper and the baker, and bought a delicious cake to take home and enjoy with a cuppa!

Grafton is larger, but has fewer amenities. Both villages have converted their red phone booths into Free Libraries.Читать далее

The twin villages are small, but there is a lot of home construction going on which is great to see. Many buildings are remodeled farm houses, cottages that have been added onto, and barn conversions using a combination of old and new bricks and stones. Lucky me to be here on Open Garden Day! There were over 20 gardens on display, I was surprised how large the lots were! Many had beautiful views of the hills beyond.

There was lunch at the village hall, games and face-painting on the greens, a classic car display, music by the pub, an art show, and an afternoon tea by the Women's Institute, a women's club that has members ages 30-80! It all benefited the school, church, and community.Читать далее

Knaresborough is famous for its beautiful railroad viaduct over the River Nidd. The grounds around the castle ruins are a park, used for many things, including lawn bowling.

There is a market square with some benches to rest in the sunshine. Two statues of historical people sit on the bench. One is Mother Shipton, England's most famous prophetess, who was born in 1488, Because of being taunted for her looks, bent back, and twisted legs, she lived in the cave in which she was born. Many of her prophesies did come true, and she was famous.

Another statue is of Blind Jack. Even though he was blinded by smallpox at ate 6, he could play the fiddle, swim, dive, climb trees, play cards, drive a delivery wagon and stagecoach, and more. He is famous as a civil engineer, having built 180 miles of turnpike roads (including across bogs) mainly in Northern England.Читать далее

What are the North Moors? What are the Yorkshire Dales?, What are The Peaks? These are some questions we are finding the answers to as we explore some of the national parks in the UK. The National Park system didn't get started here until the 1950s. There are now 15 of them and they are free to enter! "Naturally" they exist to protect unique areas and the biodiversity within them, but people do live and work on the farms and in the villages.

North Yorkshire Moors National Park

Moors are shrubby hillsides with acidic peaty soil. This national park includes the largest unbroken expanse of heather in England. The cliffs and fishing villages overlooking the North Sea are a part of the National Park too.

We were glad to be able to see heather in beautiful purple bloom. The heather is maintained by sheep grazing and controlled burning, to keep the plants young, maintaining the correct habitat for grouse and other birds.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is still in use for scenic rides from the coast into the moors. It stops at Goathland Station, the filming location for Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter movie.Читать далее

Peak District National Park

We are housesitting in Thurcroft, east of Sheffield. Today we drove to the Peak District National Park, to take a peek! Wish we would have had more time there as it is very pretty. Scenes from Pride and Prejudice were filmed there.

The village of Castleton is named for the 11th century Norman castle on the hill above the town. The town has lots of rock buildings and rock walls, a brook, (called a" beck" in the UK) and a museum.

In the museum the story of 18th and 19th century lead mining history was explained. The area now has several caves to tour, including two that produce Blue John stone, a semi-precious stone found nowhere else on earth! The name Blue John is thought to originate from the French words, bleu et jaune meaning blue and yellow.

The park also has some reservoirs, which were built in the early 1900s to supply water for the industrial areas of Sheffield, Manchester, and Derby.Читать далее

We are staying in an apartment in downtown Pontefract. It is a very walkable town of 31,800 people. There is a large market place, about 2-3 blocks, with the Town Hall at one end and a church and the Buttercross at the other. The 1734 Buttercross is an old stone shelter used by people selling dairy products.

A very nice museum in a former Library built in 1904 gives the history of the town. There are stories about mining, liquorice, voting, and an exhibition about Rachel List, a Pontefract artist. She has painted at least 11 tribute murals to the NHS during the pandemic. It was a way to say "thank you" to front-line workers, and has become a source of civic pride.Читать далее

Horse racing is the third largest spectator sport in Great Britain. The first horse race in Britain was in 1622, and rules were established in 1750.

Great Britain has 60 racecourses. Pontefract's is a 2-mile oval grassy course that surrounds a large park with 2 lakes, picnic grounds, playgrounds, and walking trails. The Grandstand looks quite festive.Читать далее

Who knew that liquorice sweets were born here in Pontefract! The perennial herb came from the mid-east in medieval times, and the runners (part of the root system) were used for medicinal purposes. The soil here is rich, deep and loamy, which is perfect for growing the herb. In the 1700s liquorice garths (fields or plots) sprang up all over town.

In the 1760s, George Dunhill, an apothecary, tried adding sugar to the medicine, and the liquorice sweet was born. Pontefract Cakes are round, soft but chewy, and stamped with a castle shape. They as well as other candies are still made by the Haribo factory in town. We bought some, and even though I normally don't like liquorice, I do like these!Читать далее

This garden is on the site of a former Dominican Friary, founded in 1256. Liquorice plants were brought here by these monks for medicinal purposes. Later the land was divided up and used by small farmers to grow fruits and vegetables. In the 1950s the city started a public garden here, with many flowering cherry trees. Pontefract Castle Ruins

Pontefract Castle was built in 1070 as a "motte-and-bailey" castle: an earth mound (motte) topped by a defense tower (keep), with an inner courtyard (bailey) surrounded by a wooden palisade. Over the centuries, it was enlarged, and the walls converted to stone, becoming one of the largest castles in England.

In the 1600s Civil War between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians, this castle was under siege three times. Because of so much damage to the town during the sieges, the townfolk petitioned Parliament to destroy the castle to prevent it from happening again.

All Saints Church, just below the castle, was heavily damaged during the Civil War. The chancel was repaired and the church continued in use. A new nave was inserted inside the ruins in 1967.Читать далее
