    First night in West Yellowstone

    Arriving by about 7 p.m., we stopped for street tacos and headed too our hotel. Eric had driven for the last three hours of the trip (trying to get his hours in for his license) so he wanted to relax. Aiden, Becky and I walked out to Main Street to explore the town. Mostly souvenir shops and a few restaurants, we got an idea of what was there for revisiting later.Okumaya devam et

    Our first morning

    After traveling the previous day and settling into our hotel lodging (Yellowstone Lodge - not the one in the park, but in West Yellowstone) the night before, mostly by ourselves, we enjoyed seeing the whole crew of the reunion adventure.     Wildlife causing traffic!

    Getting into Yellowstone proved a more difficult challenge, with so many people visiting the park. However, the real backup was approaching the big meadow, as there was a huge herd of bison with a lot of little babies running around. I get it because it was really fun to see them, crossing the river and rolling in the grass. Still, there was a dedicated pull out for people to stop and see so it’s not like they had to just slow down while they were driving.Okumaya devam et

    Old Faithful delivers!

    After a ranger told Becky it was estimated to erupt sometime around 11:33+/-10 minutes, it shot up at 11:24, and was amazing, though I remembered it lasting longer in the past 😀. Still, it remained faithful and we timed it just right. A few in our party hadn't even parked yet, so I sent around my video in case they didn't want to wait for it again (and a bit of a tease "sorry you missed it!" - what is family for, right?).Okumaya devam et

    Grand geyser is truly grand!

    Erupting every six to ten hours, grand geyser is one of the cooler ones in the basin. When we got there, we weren’t sure how long we’d have to wait but we were blessed with an amazing view as it became active just a few minutes after we got there. It lasted a lot longer than Old Faithful and it was pretty spectacular to be there.Okumaya devam et

    Grand Prismatic Spring

    With biscuit basin and being closed, we called an Audible and headed over to the grand prismatic spring. We got lucky enough to find some parking on the side of the road and headed through the woods towards one of Yellowstone‘s most iconic features. It was a lot of fun to see the wind blow the steam off the pools just long enough that you could see some of the amazing colors. The fact that there is so much thermal activity here, indicating one of the largest volcanoes in the world is pretty amazing! I struggled a bit with the steam blowing across my sunglasses, fogging them up enough for me to have to stop for a minute as I walked. It was pretty fun to feel that warm steam on your face in the cool air.Okumaya devam et

    Fountain Paint Pots

    Bubbling mud, who could ask for more? This was a fun stop with a very unique feature of the park. I could have watched those bubbles forever! We ran into a nice couple from Leeds, England and had a nice chat in front of the mud, but this pretty much indicated the last stop in the park for us today. A little wind whipped and sunburnt, we decided to head back out of the park for the evening.Okumaya devam et

    Gibbon Falls - first stop

    After a gathering and bit of a drive in to the park again from the West, we headed north, out of the caldera of the ancient volcano and into the forests and mountains of the park, or as they say "Waterfall Country" - or "Bear country". Gibbon Falls was our first stop, and we got pretty lucky, finding parking for all seven of our party vehicles. Aside from a pretty long wait for the single bathroom, the stop was very relaxing. The expansive forests in the background and the serene valley where the river flowed away were some additional highlights beyond the falls itself, which didn't disappoint.Okumaya devam et

    Norris Geyser Basin

    Norris has some really interesting things about it - barren and open similar to Old Faithful area, it has some of the hottest (surface and sub-surface) and most acidic water in the world. Parking was a chore again, but we managed somehow to get everyone to the attraction. After once again waiting on restroom breaks, we began our trek around the basin, following the boardwalks around and chatting with our family (probably one of the most enjoyable thing about these reunions that photos don't really capture).Okumaya devam et

    Upper Yellowstone Falls - South rim view

    Heading across the rive to the south rim of the canyon, our first stop provided an amazing view of the upper falls. It was a short stop, but good that we did, as we lost half our party to a quick turnoff by one of our vehicles to see a bear. Those of us who stayed true to the course (or plan) still aren't convinced there was a bear, as no pictures were provided and only mere hints that someone "might have seen" one while driving the loop.Okumaya devam et

    Lower Yellowstone Falls - Artists point

    Now this stop was one you shouldn't miss - although a bit further away from the falls, it provides some awe-inspiring views of the Yellowstone River and the rugged-cut gorge that it carved beyond. Clearly a possible origin of the "yellow stone", it is no wonder it got the name "Artist Point". Photos actually turned out quite nicely here, but even then, I don't believe they do it justice - has to be seen in person to appreciate the beauty and truly be experienced.Okumaya devam et

    Brink of the Lower Falls!

    After some debate amongst party members, the majority voted for making the 600 ft. descent down the switchbacks to the brink of Lower Falls (of the Yellowstone River - official name). Short hike, but lots of altitude, it was a bit of work on the way down for the ankles and knees, but the way back up didn't feel as bad as it probably should. The view right near the edge was amazing, and to see that much water cascading constantly over the edge took our break away. We also got some great views of the crashing mist and mini waterfalls down in the gorge below, so well-worth the hike!Okumaya devam et

    Ice cream at night

    After an exciting and exhausting day, we ended up just eating what we had in our coolers back at the hotel breakfast area. However, after everyone being too tired to engage in any lively card games, we somehow convinced a large portion of the group to go check out the homemade ice cream place in town. We all piled in to a couple of vehicles and zipped off together. Flavors like Huckleberry Honey Lavender, Caramel Cookie Crunch, and Double Chocolate Orange really whet our whistles! It was cold, so we mostly stood out there and shivered while everyone got their orders and snacked a bit, then we rushed off to get back in the warm vehicles and head back to the hotel!Okumaya devam et

    Big breakfast!

    Deciding to ditch the continental breakfast at the hotel, we headed out to Yogi's Waffles and Grill - in the side of a convenience store gas station - lol! But the menu was very tempting, so we gave it a shot. It felt like for a morning breakfast place, there would be a few more people working, so I'm not sure I would recommend it if you're in a hurry to eat and get into the park. Lucky for us, we weren't in a big hurry. The food was very good overall, my family was happy, with the one issue of the chicken fingers on the chicken an waffles being a bit overly crispy, and less meat than I'm used to for that specific kind of dish. Heidi and Finn joined us and luckily their food came out almost at the same time ours did! So fueled up, we were ready for one last jaunt into the park before the long drive home.Okumaya devam et

    In the park one more time

    We wanted to head to the Prismatic Spring overlook - we only visited the spring directly last time, so we could get a great picture of the colors from up above without the steam getting in our way. As we got further in, we had another Bison encounter, which was awesome (it felt like we hadn't seen as much wildlife this year). They are just massive! And we started our hike to the overlook - the steam picture in the distance is all about the colors being reflected in the smoke, not sure if the photo captures it but in person, it was really quite cool!Okumaya devam et

    Back to the prismatic spring!

    And... it was totally worth it - postcard picture shots, and some great family "Christmas Card" additions for this coming holiday season. The platform was quite crowded, so we had to jump in and squeeze together to take our pic, but we managed a few good ones! And this represented the last stop before our 5.5 hour journey home. Oh, and we had Eric drive for the first few hours, including driving us out of Yellowstone! It was great!Okumaya devam et
