  • Arrival day

    March 22 in Poland ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

A late flight bringing us in at 1855L. A very diligent customs procedure had us queuing for over 40 mins but we made the cut. We chose to take the public bus into Gdansk costing PLN 9.60 (£1.93). 35 min later we arrived in the centre. A short 10 min walk past a very scary looking hostel we arrived at our home for the week. A lovely apartment in a residential block. As it was quite late we quickly got on another layer and went shopping for milk and the essential pierogis for tea. A good night sleep is required for our travels tomorrow!Read more

  • First day, full day!

    March 23 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

Oh wow what a day. We started off with a walk about to find our bearings but ended up ticking most off our list! After spotting the Gdansk city sign we walked along the Nowa Motława river taking in the iconic Zuraw. Then heading to the famous Mariacka Street. The gargoyles are fascinating, adorning most buildings, coming out into the streets. Then walking down the beautiful streets we came across Neptune fountain. Heading to Dobra Paczkarnia so Brandon could get a Kirsch donut and I a tiramisu from Fit Kafe. Fueled we then headed to Glowny station to embark on a journey to Westerplatte. It is famous for the Battle of Westerplatte, which was the first clash between Polish and German forces during the invasion of Poland and thus the beginning and the first battle of World War II. We then travelled to the much spoken about Pierogarnia Mandu restaurant for some gorgeous soup and pierogis. A very fulfilling day out!!Read more

  • A beautiful day of exploring

    March 24 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Today we decided to hit the mall, hunting for bargains, unfortunately none were to be found. We caught the tram there but as the weather was gorgeous decided to walk 45 minutes back to town. A glorious walk, with many things spotted; a WW2 tank, cranes and sculptures. We stopped off at the food hall to take a look around and had a couple of drinks; rude not to. Then after a quick Netto shop we took in a sunset walk alongside the river. Another beautiful day in Gdansk.Read more

  • A day at the Beach ⛱️

    March 25 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today we caught the train to Sopot. A beautiful sunny day (15°). After scaling 134 steps we got to the top of the lighthouse only to discover it's a chimney as well as a lighthouse. Historically it was used for the baths built in 1903, they needed an exhaust but did not want to spoil the seafront so build a dual purpose building. Today it discharges fumes from the gas boiler room of the rheumatology hospital built in this place. We then took a stroll along Europe's longest pier, 511.5 metres. After purchasing some hot mulled wine (weird but it's everywhere) we sat and watched the many pigeons play on the beach. A stroll into town had us finding out about Wotjek the bear and discovering the beautiful town that is Sopot, extremely picturesque, clearly a very affluent area. Back into Gdansk we take a stroll through the town before retiring back to the apartment for a well deserved rest!Read more

  • Historical Gdansk

    March 26 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Today we visited the WW2 museum. A heavy emotional day that we had mentally prepared for. It was good to read about the war from the Polishes experiences, much of which we were not aware of. We sat in the cafe after with coffee in silent reflection, a heavy morning.
After lunch we went for a Hewelion hunt then to St Mary's to see the famous Astronomical clock made by Hans Duringer. Unfortunately photos were not allowed as it's a place of worship ( not that you would know from the mass of people treating it like a visitor centre) so I've screenshot a Google image. A little walk around the old town bought us to the Red Light Pub. Very cosy microbrewery where we met KiKi who was visiting Gdansk for the 15th time!! Dinner was in Whiskey in the Jar (Kikis recommendation). A lovely meal but maybe a bit to American for our Polish holiday. A lovely evening walk home bought us past the Gdansk city sign lighting up the night sky. A beautiful end to another day.

  • We've all been there

    March 27 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

So it would be a shame not to remember this night... Luckily I wasn't as drunk as Brandon.. I held him up through the 25 min walk to the train station as he stumbled up and down steps. Held his head as he fell asleep on the 40 min train journey and then dragged him the last 10 mins. Can't wait to wake him in the morning for our early morning breakfast plans 🤣Read more

  • Malbork Day Trip

    March 27 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today we got the train to Malbork! The world's largest brick castle is located here which is also a UNESCO site. We took a tour which included an audio set, it was very informative and extremely beautiful. We then toured the very small town which unfortunately has very little to offer. However both Brandon and I have work colleagues currently housed in nearby hotels so we took the opportunity to visit them all! A few pints and dinner later we find ourselves on the late train home! Fingers crossed we don't fall asleep and miss our stop!!Read more

  • Last day chilling

    March 28 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Our last day was chilled, full of food and sunshine. We went for breakfast at Neighbors kitchen and had an amazing breakfast. I had a shaushoka and ginger infused tea and Brandon a polish breakfast of eggs, sausage and salad. After a walk in the sunshine we went back to pack and clean so we could enjoy the rest of the day. We found a lovely large sun bed by the city sign. Enjoying an ice cream, people and boat watching we spent the rest of the morning there. On the hunt for a pint we settled into the Elephant restaurant watching the world go by then hearing parade music we looked up to see Polish Navy parading by the side of us. After a quick Google search we found out that today is Gdansk Independence Day. Unfortunately the service was in Polish but we enjoyed it nevertheless. Our day ended with us having a meal in Swojski Smak. Unfortunately the sun had got to us and we could not finish the meals but it was nice to go out.
A beautiful week in Gdansk and although we travelled nearly all of it on foot, by tram, train and bus we feel it still has a lot more to offer.
