  • Botanical Gardens

    2. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ 🌧 21 °C

Today we are being tourists and going to a number of sites around Brisbane CBD all within walking distance of our Hotel.

The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens is located at Gardens Point and is bordered by the Brisbane CBD and the Brisbane River.

Originally the gardens were planted by convicts in 1825 with food crops to feed the prison colony. Then in 1828 the botanist, Charles Fraser, selected the site to become a public garden and by 1855 the garden was established. The gardens are now Brisbane’s oldest and most mature with many rare and unusual botanic species.

The grounds are lovely , there was also a small market which we browsed though and continued walking to the The Gardens Club Café, also known as The Curator’s Cottage, for you guessed it coffee and cake. The cottage is a quaint heritage listed dwelling which was was built in 1909.

  • Old Government House

    2. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

We continued out walk to Old Government House which was originally the area that became known as Gardens Point and was originally covered in thick scrub.

In 1825 the Moreton Bay penal settlement was established on the northern bank of the river. The land nearest the point was cleared to grow much needed food for the struggling convict settlement.

In 1855, overgrown and unused for almost twenty-five years, the land was subdivided into town allotments, but the people of Brisbane petitioned the Sydney based government in protest against the sale.

After Queensland achieved separation from New South Wales in 1859 one of the first acts of Queensland's new Parliament was to provide the colony's first governor with a 'fitting' home. The building had to serve two distinct purposes as being a private residence for the governor and his family and as an official state office, it would be the hub of colonial life in the early days of Brisbane.

The newly appointed Government Architect Charles Tiffin designed the building in 1860. He incorporated a number of adaptations to the Greek revival style to better suit it to the local climate.
Tiffin was a significant figure in Victorian-era public architecture in Australia, and went on to design over 300 Queensland buildings.

The House was built by Joshua Jeays, who punted the huge loads of sandstone used for its construction down the Brisbane River from his Goodna quarry. Jeays was also an alderman in the first Brisbane Municipal Council and later served as mayor.

The House was completed in May 1862 at a total cost of £17,000.

Currently within the Old government House is the William Robinson Gallery. I was not a lover of his art work but found it very interesting. He has also won 2 Archibald Prizes both are currently in the gallery.

  • Brisbane City Museum

    2. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We wandered home for lunch and then went for another short walk to the Brisbane City Museum.

The current exhibition was interesting as it was like stepping back in time and listening to stories being told about hidden histories, myths and tales of Brisbane .
The Storytellers creates an immersive and interactive experience combining historical objects, artworks, and written and narrated histories to share Brisbane’s many identities.

Over the decades, Brisbane has played host to conflict, celebration, scandal, disaster, ceremony and transformative moments. Through fact and fiction, The Storytellers reveals the layers of Brisbane’s history, providing different perspectives and a deeper, human interpretation of our city.

Back at the Hotel now for the remainder of the day.

    Tourist Part 2 tomorrow.

  • South Bank and River Cat

    3. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This morning we were up and out by 9.45am all ready for the walk to South Bank.

Walking through the city today is like a ghost town it is a pubic holiday in Brisbane but I would have thought more people would be enjoying the nice weather.

Walking to South Bank would normally be very pleasant however this morning I was not feeling the best and my knee is very much swollen so not an enjoyable walk. It is an easy walk but I was really struggling.

The gardens in South Bank are lovely and the kids play areas seem to be well designed.

We finally found somewhere for a coffee but no cake as my tummy was still yuk.

After coffee we continued our walk. Now feeling a little better so we jumped on the free Hop on Hop Off River Cat which takes you up and down the river.

The River Cat ride was wonderful sitting back taking in the sun and looking at all the development along the river front. There are a few lovely houses but mainly high rise apartments.

Our trip took us down or is it up river from the City Hopper Terminal in Southbank under the Story Bridge to Sydney Street and then back to Riverside. Riverside has some really nice looking restaurants I think we will come back here later in the week for a meal.

We continued walking to Eagle Street Pier where we then decided it was time to head back to the Hotel which is only a few blocks away.

As I have said a few times this location is excellent for a Brisbane Sightseeing Tour and there will be more sights to see tomorrow.

  • The Clock Tower

    4. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

This morning we took a tour of the City Hall Clock Tower it is only 15min and you go up in a lift which is over 90 years old.

A few Interesting clock tower facts

The clock tower is 92 metres high, with an observation platform at 76 metres which is where the lift stops so you can take in the view. The clock tower was the tallest structure in Brisbane until the 1960s and was fitted with a red beacon at its apex to warn aircraft of this location. It was the largest public clock and most modern time-keeping piece in Australia and the clock face is almost five metres in diameter. The minute hands of the clock are three metres long and over 1,000 screws hold the white opal clock face in place.

The clock chimes are known as Westminster or Cambridge and consist of four bells weighing over three tonnes that chime every 15 minutes and a 4.3 tonne striking bell that marks the hour.

  • Shingle Inn

    4. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Once our tour was over it was time for coffee and cake in the oldest café in Brisbane. It was like going back in time coffee and cake was yum but the seating was a little uncomfortable it was like being in very small church pews. What was funny is that we were probably the youngest in the café, other than the staff, there were so many grey haired people.

In 1936 David Webster and Sons built the original Shingle Inn on Edward Street in Brisbane as part of their large chain of cafés, with a vision for Shingle Inn to be an elegant English style teahouse and restaurant, one that would be renowned for its quality products and keen sense of style. Shingle Inn quickly developed an enviable reputation with locals, and the venue became a busy landmark, with queues to buy the famous cakes regularly stretching out the door and around the corner. In the early 1970s, Shingle Inn was facing abandonment, but in 1975 the Bellchambers family, who continue to operate Shingle Inn, took ownership.

On August 3 2002, Shingle Inn closed its doors to the city that had shown it only love and loyalty since its first day of trading in the Autumn of 1936 for the last time. The Bellchambers family had been forced to shut up shop due to redevelopment. The city of Brisbane was devastated, and the decision was made to keep the spectacular interior in storage until their beloved restaurant could be reopened, ensuring every detail of the fit-out was catalogued and photographed when the time came to put the pieces back together.

On June 4 2010, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, gifting the original store fit-out to the people of Brisbane, to be restored within another Brisbane icon, City Hall, allowing future generation to experience the grandeur of Shingle Inn.

  • Raining today

    5. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ 🌧 20 °C

Last night I had a lovely catch up with Beth a childhood friend from Elanora Heights. We grew up as next door neighbours. In High School Beth's family moved to Beacon Hill we kept in contact with each other for years. Beth even came to John's and my wedding. I guess life got in the way and we lost contact. Then one day there was a post on FB back 2018 and we made contact with each other. Beth now lives in Brisbane and as this trip is about catching up with friends Beth was top of the list. We had so much to talk about and looking forward to the next time we can catch up

Today we stayed in our Hotel room it was a very wet day and by the time the weather had cleared it was to late to go anywhere. This meant we could catch up on computer work. Michael your 40th birthday slideshow is now completed.

Fingers crossed the rain has gone tomorrow so we can venture out.

  • Old Petrie Town

    6. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Today we decided it was time to explore out of the CBD. We started driving to Caboolture Historical Village but while driving I worked out that is was closed. We were already on the road so we managed to find another Cultural Village called Old Petrie Town.

The village is a little run down but is rather cute. The village has a number restored historic houses which spread across 48 acres of parklands.

A number of the buildings where closed as they have more trade on the weekend but the ones were walked through were quite nice. The museum was excellent. We watched a 15 min movie explaining the history of Pine River and the families. This was most informative especially with the added animation displayed during film.

We had morning tea and lunch at the Hotel which, in its former days, would have been spectacular and wandered around the streets looking at the buildings, some needed a little restoration but in general the set up is quite good and worth the visit.

  • Dinner with Kevin and Jane

    6. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

In the evening we took the River Cat to New Farm so we could have dinner with Kevin and Jane who have now moved from Sydney to Brisbane.

The River Cat is such a great way to get around especially as the sun goes down. The buildings and the water look incredible. Once off the River Cat we walked through New Farm Park which is also lovely to Kevin and Jane apartment to watch the sunset over the city and Story Bridge. The apartment is beautiful, the sunset was memorable and the company was great.

After a few bottles of bubbles we jumped in a Uber and then off to a very nice restaurant, the Golden Pig. We had a lovely dinner and more wine and chatting about everything. It was then time to jump back in an Uber and head home.

    Another great day in Brisbane.

  • Tamborine Mountain

    7. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today we ventured out to Tamborine Mountain.

The drive took just over 1 hour and it very pretty going up the winding mountain road. Once at the top there is quaint little village with lots of craft stores and cellar doors scattered up and down the streets. We only visited a few but we purchased 2 bottles of wine and 6 bottles of liquors to make cocktails or just to sip.

I am sure there is a lot more to do here but we really only came to check out the distilleries. One distillery Castle Glen had so many to choose from it made it very difficult we did manage to get it down to a few. It might be worth staying in one of the B and B's and stay a few days so we could taste more on our next visit.

  • Botanica 2021

    7. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

One last thing before we leave Brisbane tomorrow.

The Botanical Gardens had open air art exhibition in the City Botanic Gardens. We went thinking a small Vivid. Well it really it only had 9 installations and a couple of them were just weird no light just chalk drawing on the grass or something with weird meanings that required a lot of thought which to us meant nothing. However, there were a couple of very interesting ones.

The best one was Ripple which is an immersive audiovisual experience that is projection-mapped on the lagoon surface. The audience navigates through the physical transformation of water via a touch screen, from ice to vapour. We even spoke to the artist.

  • Goodbye Brisvegas

    8. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we leave Brisbane for Hope Island catching up with Peter and Heather.

Brisbane you are an interesting city. Lots to see and do all but 1 day the weather held out.

We enjoyed catching up with Mark, Beth, Kevin and Jane. It was a long overdue catch. Let's try not to make it as long for the next visit in Sydney or Brisbane.

Goodbye Brisvegas until next time we meet.

  • Hope Island

    8. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We are now at Peter and Heather's lovely home in Hope Island.

Not long after we arrived we went on tour around the area in a golf cart which is the main mode of transport. Heather drove us around showing so many houses up and down the many streets. We ended up in Santuary Cive for lunch and then continued driving around the one of the golf clubs for a drink. We jumped back into the golf cart and headed home through the golf course.

We chatted and caught up on heaps of things and finished the day with a BBQ for dinner.

We were really surprised how large Hope Island was. It certainly looks like a lovely place to live. There are some huge houses and their front gardens were extremely well maintained. Some of the homes are a little dated but still very nice.

Could Hope Island be on the list for our next home?

  • Another Day discovering Hope Island

    9. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

The morning started with a drive in the golf cart to Sanctuary Cove for Mothers Day breakfast which was yummo.

Then Heather took us around more of the area looking at some lovely homes. After going up and down the we headed home and then Heather took us to another section of Hope Island by car as the golf carts cannot travel in the particular area.

Again some lovely homes and also some not so great. We also drove past some the original houses in the area including a house I recognised from the 2018 House Rules program. We then continued our pleasant drive with our driver Heather to an area even she had never been to and found huge acreage properties.

Back at the house for wine, beer, cheese and crackers before heading out to another Golf Club for dinner.

Another wonderful day on Hope Island.

  • Peppers Soul

    10. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Our room was not ready so we walked to Cavill Ave which is basically right outside our Hotel for a coffee. Not many places to go for coffee, it is really run down and dead. Finally, somewhere for a coffee we then continued our walk looking in those shops which were actually open.

It was now lunch time and still no word on our room but we did have use of the facilities. So we went to Woolworths for a few basics and then went to The Hotel's "Secret Garden" and ate some lunch and read a magazine as well as playing my decorating game.

Now 2 o'clock and our room is ready. Up to the 31st floor and our room is lovely. A quick unpack and a load of washing. Then back to Cavill Ave for groceries for the remainder of the week.

Now to catch up on some computer work and then relax and I will say it again relax.

  • Relaxing Poolside

    11. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Today is a lovely day for relaxation by the pool.

Sun shining, sun lounge and a book is all you need.

We even had morning tea in the pool area before it was time for a swim. The water, once in, was very nice.

One issue with this pool is that the Hotel is so tall that by lunch time the whole area is covered in shade. This means pack up and upstairs for lunch.

Now for a walk along the beach.

  • Walk along the Beach

    11. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

A lovely walk along the beach the sand is really soft which makes it hard to walk in until down near the water. The tide is going out so very easy to walk. Lots of shells and small stones along the way.

Back for afternoon tea and resting before we go our for dinner with David and Anita.

The weather today was not great so we went for a drive to Broadbeach. Broadbeach is very nice so much better than Surfers.

After a walk around and morning tea it was back in the car to drive to the Harbourtown Outlets.

Heaps of shops and worth the drive. After a few purchases it was time for lunch. Heaps of places to choose but we went with Asian.

Back at the Hotel working out a place for dinner. We selected Pancakes on the Rocks because it is close to our Hotel. We need to pack later tonight as it is our last day in Queensland.

We have arrived on Port Macquarie for the night.

Not much to report today as we were driving all day.

Surfers to Ballina for morning tea and change of driver.

Ballina to Coffs Harbour to collect the clothes I left on our way to Qld. Then to the shopping precinct for lunch and again change driver.

Now in our Hotel very basic, I think it was Motel before change of branding to Ibis. They upgraded us to a spa suite which one would think yeh except you need a ladder to get into the spa bath for a shower. The TV is huge and apparently has Netflix but not working someone on there way to check. The location is great though Just across from the water and a short walk into town.

    14. mai 2021, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Last night we walked into town for dinner. It was about 8 min into town for a OK dinner then back to our Hotel.

Well what can I say about last night's sleep. Oh wait not much sleep, dogs barking, next door's TV going all hours of the morning, no block out curtains so it was like trying to sleep in the middle of the day as there is an outside light which does not turn off. John slept well throughout this so he is refreshed for the drive home. Hence packed, breakfast, check out and on the road by 8.30.Les mer
