Life in La Jolla

I had been procrastinating about starting the blog as I feared I’d run into technical problems, and I DID need Amr to find a box to tick to actually start…but now up and running so here goes!
The leaving of Australia wasn’t as fearsome as we’d feared and all our tests, passports etc were in order ….phew….we had agonised so much and all was well. Cleared US customs so quickly and were driven very luxuriously down to La Jolla, arriving so early that Michael was out having breakfast, anticipating us to arrive an hour or 2 later! All fine - let in by Anita in her dressing gown - the lovely neighbour over the road. So good to see Michael, and Lisi, who had been in Panama with James, arrived in the evening, leaving James socialising with cousins and enjoying Spanish immersion in Panama. So for the moment it is just the 4 of us, like back to the pre children era! Cami is still in Pennsylvania- she has a summer internship with Nanoware. She is doing really well there from all reports, and she returns home on Friday and will have a week to relax with friends before school goes back. James comes back on August 16, just in time for school.
We have plunged straight into social life here. On Saturday it was Ben’s 40th birthday party. Ben is a Farrell cousin - son of Peter’s sister Keryn. He has been living here for a long time now, originally working for ResMed. He is married to the lovely Jeannine and they have 2 boys Sam 2 and Max 3 months. Lovely afternoon party in the backyard - a whole pig on the spit (or had been!) and yummy food…and then the Olympics were on and Oz did itself proud in the swimming! A great Ben style laidback event!
Then Sunday a dinner with Damian Vale, a Sertori cousin of Jess, Liv and Ted and the many others in the clan. He has been living and working in the US starting March last year- so he’s had a total covid experience and not seen Australian travellers coming through, or family and probably can’t even return for his sister’s wedding in November….anyway he is a lovely boy (man - he’s 30!) like all the other Vales, and we met at a Japanese restaurant. Peter F also there (he had flown in from Texas, and was at Ben’s party) and of course as usual he brought along a stray person that no one had ever met (Herb, who he had been playing golf with that day!)…he has this infuriating habit of bringing odd people to family occasions…it was a great dinner anyway, and we will see Damian again before we leave.
Next week Michael and Lisi have a holiday at Whistler from Monday to Friday which will be a lovely break for them, and Amr and I will hold the fort here, with Cami and Nico the dog.
I had been dreading the summer heat here, but had forgotten how cool La Jolla can be with the sea fog and walking fairly early is very pleasant, especially with the sea breeze. But I had also forgotten how feeling cool doesn’t stop the sun and am a bit sunburnt…stupid, must slather on the cream. But we have maintained our walking ready for France, and Amr also swims in the high school pool daily.
I think I’ve chatted on too long but this is really an experimental start to make sure everything works! I will add photos, and post more news, but probably not every day while we are here. When we get to France it will certainly be daily! But meanwhile we are SO happy to be here, and are enjoying being with Michael and Lisi.
Almost forgot to mention that I gave Michael and Amr haircuts!! And so successful we have ordered the clippers to use as we travel!Weiterlesen

A Week Away

Suddenly we realise we’ve been here for a week! Still enjoying and grateful for our freedom, reading what is going on in Oz with what looks like continuing lockdowns - hope you are not going too crazy.
We’ve had a lovely week….after the social whirl of last weekend, we have quietly been pottering and exercising…we have been checking if we need testing before our flight to Europe, and it seems as if we don’t which makes us very happy, as one clinic that we approached charged US$299 each!! We could have shopped round and found less I’m sure, but it looks as if fully vaccinated it will be fine. (And I believe there are testing places at the airport if an emergency)…anyway, here’s hoping.
Have been doing a bit of cooking, but last night we went to a fab meat and whisky restaurant - Huntress. Lisi had seen it mentioned online and decided to try it…a great success. We shared an enormous tomahawk beef, and Lisi and I started with an amazing Penang curry lobster soup…wow, just delicious. And tonight we are going to the Country Club for dinner…pretty fantastic life.
Special events during the week were Jess’s 20th birthday and we had a lovely FaceTime with her. Can’t believe it….And another special event was Peter and Louise became grandmother and step grandfather…Louise’s daughter Emily had a baby girl. Will include a photo of her communing with Emily’s sister Isabella in London!
Cami is now on her way back to San Diego…arrives late tonight so won’t see her till tomorrow. So she will appear in next post.
Just writing again to keep it going…nothing dramatic, all good.Weiterlesen

More La Jolla Life

Our quiet life continues. Saturday was a big event for Michael and Lisi..the annual Jewel Ball. It is a big fundraiser held at the Beach and Tennis Club, a year of hard work by volunteers and a very glamorous event. The Theme was 007 this year. Lisi took Amr and me down to see the venue on Saturday afternoon…fantastic setup, and you could see the effects even without the night and lighting.
We saw Cami for the first time on Saturday too! So grown up since 2 years ago…she is out and about catching up with friends for the last week before school starts. Lovely to see her and get to know the grown up Cami. I think right at this minute she is at Papa Peter’s apartment using the wifi there for some school work as she is having problems here (though it seems to be working fine for our purposes).
Sunday our usual day of walking and Amr swimming. Moo barbecued hamburgers for Sunday night dinner…then Monday departure day for them to leave for Canada. Afternoon flight and all smooth till they got into a terrible traffic jam driving from Vancouver to Whistler…a motorcycle accident closed the road for several hours…but from the texts and photos today, all is good there now, and they are now happily ensconced for a few days. Returning Saturday after one night in Vancouver.
Dinner with Anita and Brian last night. We are now the minders of Nico and he follows me round like a shadow as the current carer! He is very cute. Today Amr and I went to a terrible movie at the Lot in La Jolla. Sci-fi tosh, and can’t believe I sat through it!! Called Suicide Squad. Don’t see it! It was very comfy sitting in the reclining chairs while we watched though!
Good luck to Liv for her HSC trials!! We send vibes and have to remember the time change…English today.Weiterlesen

More than 2 weeks gone

We’ll it’s now Saturday morning here, and all very peaceful. Cami stayed overnight with a friend last night, and hasn’t surfaced here yet. We have only glimpsed her this week anyway, as she is busy catching up with friends, and fitting in some work she has to do for school, which starts after the summer break next week, and I think college applications, for which it seems they have to write extensive essays!
Amr has taken a bus to the mall to go to the Amazon store there as his kindle keeps saying he needs a new battery, and Nico and I are peacefully here minding the house. I am making a lasagna for Michael and Lisi’s homecoming dinner (at request). Nico has had his morning walk so he is content except for the worry of the mailman who he barks at daily. Walking Nico twice a day means ascending this VERY steep hill each time, plus again when I go for my own walk!! Good practice at hills, but this one in their street is very extreme.
Nothing really to report from the last few days. Michael and Lisi in Canada and having a great time at Whistler and last night in Vancouver. Now waiting to board their plane home. Arrive here about 3.30pm. Yesterday we went to another movie!! This time it was good, and we enjoyed it as well as the comfortable chairs! It was Respect, a film about Aretha Franklin. Well done, though quite long. It has been very hot these last few days. No morning fog to start the day, but straight into searing sun, and walking up and down to the village (only about 3.5 km) a very sweaty business. I think I’ll skip my walk today, and do some yoga poses instead. I must do something about my hair…it was long before I left and overdue for a cut, but of course hairdressers closed…am a bit intimidated by the thought of a La Jolla hairdresser, but the alternative is managing it in French in France…must decide soon as it is driving me mad!
On Monday James returns, and for the first time we will all be together! I’ll try and find some photos, but not many. One of me doing yoga with Nico watching, but will look on Amr’s iPad for more…Weiterlesen

Continuing in La Jolla

Not a huge amount to report this week. Three weeks today since we arrived unbelievably! It has been very humid when walking, but have managed it most days - have to keep ready for the big walking which will start on Monday week!!
We have had a full house for the last few days. James arrived back on Monday, with Nando - a Panama cousin - now almost 30, but I first met him when I first minded Cami and James in 2009! He is now an architect. He flew back with James who is strictly a minor. So James reoccupied his downstairs room, with Nando on the sofa down there. We moved up to James’ old room upstairs. School started yesterday, so morning chaos waking up and getting off in time! Cami drives James which is handy…their schedules don’t always coincide, specially during Covid, but they do now. And Lisi drove Nando to the airport for return to Panama this morning.
Trying to remember individual events…yesterday evening we went over to Anita and Brian’s…they were participating in a trivia quiz by zoom. Brian is active in the Cambridge alumni on the west coast here, and it was Oxford/Cambridge teams versus Harvard/Yale. Rather fun, but via zoom it was a bit long and involved, and the questions were rather esoteric as you can imagine…anyway, fun to see. Michael and Lisi were at a dinner…it has been a ResMed board meeting week.
But that is now over and we embark on quite a social few days. Tonight we go to a concert - a bit like symphony under the stars, except since our last visit San Diego has build a permanent concert shell for these events. Will have photos next time. And today I am bravely having a La Jolla haircut!! Lisi says her hairdresser is very down to earth and will do whatever I want, so here’s hoping…I have to do something - my hair is falling in my eyes, and there are many weeks to go!! Photo will also follow!
Then tomorrow Ben and Jeannine will come over in the afternoon for a drink, as last chance to see them before we leave. Didn’t properly catch up at Ben’s party so that will be lovely. Then it is a BBQ at the beach club with people we know…also fun.
Sunday we have a dinner with all of us plus Peter F and Tama!! So will be able to give first hand report! On Tuesday we have a final dinner at a Mexican restaurant- probably won’t have many Mexican meals in France, then we leave on Wednesday.
I haven’t got photos of Cami and James properly yet…their lives are rather rushed and chaotic, but will definitely get some before we leave. James is as handsome as ever, taller than me and eats like a horse! Mostly meat and rice! Cami is beautiful and also grown - about Lisi’s height I think. Only one rather lovely photo of Lisi and Nico.
P.S. now back from haircut! Lovely hairdresser, and feel so much better…photo of the new me, plus some photos that I got from Lisi of James and Cami this week, and of James in Panama…AND great shot of Pete and Cathy on Sunday on Pete’s birthday.Weiterlesen

Last days in America

Well, in 24 hours we will hopefully be flying to Europe! A slight feeling of stress, as covid certificates etc required, but we have checked in online, and let’s hope all goes smoothly.
We have had a busy and lovely last few days. On Friday it was the concert - Beethoven by the Bay. Great all Beethoven concert, and the new shell now built is fantastic…and great acoustics. We sat at a table, had a meal and listened…just perfect. And very pleasant weather…last time I remember it was cold, but no wind this night.
Then on Saturday there was a BBQ at the beach and tennis club. Lots of food and lots of fun with friends of M and L that we now know quite well (as well as you know people who you only see every few years!). We had been going to have a drink with Ben and Jeannine before, but the days got mixed up and Saturday didn’t work for them, nor Sunday for us.
On Sunday it was a dinner with Peter and Tama, at an Italian restaurant. Very pleasant and drama free! Tama seemed nice, only comment is that she had trouble finding gluten and dairy free food on an Italian menu, and ended up having a salad. She is very skinny.
Yesterday we ate at home…Michael cut us some beautiful sashimi from the tuna he had caught on his Mexican fishing excursion recently and it was delicious. And Lisi made a very tasty Panamanian dish - pollo con bolo - chicken and corn and many other yum ingredients.
Amr and I have been walking (and he swimming as well) and hope we are ready and fit for our upcoming serious spell of walking! It is still so humid, but have checked Burgundy and weather there looks delightfully moderate…phew…
Just about to leave for our last dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Peter F called and said was there a chance for a meeting before we leave, so he will come too, and Amr and I will walk down to his apartment for a drink first and meet M, L and kids at the restaurant at 7.30. Tama is back in Houston.
And we FaceTime-ed with Sonny for his 5th birthday on Sunday!!
Tomorrow the adventure begins, and I will post daily!! But may be a bit erratic during the travelling day…Weiterlesen

Paris at last!!

OMG, we are in France, and the whole procedure was so easy…we are SO happy! Leaving the USA at LAX was straightforward - we didn’t need to have a covid test once we had shown our Australian covid vaccination certificate, and all our worries were unfounded. So the flight was uneventful- very efficient and Lufthansa! At first we thought it would be quite empty, but it did gradually fill up, but we were able to move to have an aisle in the middle with no one next to the middle person…but each row had people…and the second flight from Frankfurt to Paris was totally full. Anyway, all easy - we officially entered the EU at Frankfurt and had to show what we were doing in France (he even scrutinised our walking itinerary!) but friendly and easy…and not particularly worried about covid status (just how long we would be in EU). And the second leg to Paris was just a domestic flight…
So here we are, ensconced in our Ibis hotel near the Gare de Lyon and all is perfect. This afternoon we had a reconnoiter to find the Gare de Bercy which is very near the Gare de Lyon, but we’d never seen or heard of it before. But that is where trains leave for Burgundy and the Dordogne…so we bought tickets for Saturday (Amr is very good at those ticket machines) for going to Vezelay and the start of our walking programme!!!
Having achieved that we wandered towards the Bastille area, and had a beer first, then a meal…I had moules with frites, and Amr had beef tartare and we had salads…so perfect, we just couldn’t believe that here we are, Paris acting normally…we need to put on masks walking into the hotel, and when in restaurants they ask for our “passe sanitaire” and are totally satisfied with our digital Oz vaccination certificate….that was one thing that we wondered about, but obviously non French are welcome with whatever certificate they have…so all GOOD.
What a life…we are not all in it together - we are in Paris!Weiterlesen

A Perfect, Peaceful Paris Day

What a lovely day! We planned just to wander round, not achieve anything or seek out culture…it’s now 10.50pm and Amr is already asleep beside me, so I can’t ask him to remind me of memorable things, but here goes…
First, very importantly Amr went out to get a bottle of freshly squeezed juice. We found this small grocery that has a squeeze machine and you fill a bottle as the oranges squeeze and pay by size of bottle…perfect for us squeeze-aholics! So then we set off, had delicious pastries as only the French can do, and coffee, and meandered along the river towards St Michel, stopped at Le Petit Pontoise, a little restaurant we love and often go to (found originally for us by Cathy many years ago) and booked to have dinner there tonight. Then continued on, saw Samaritaine, a department store - used to be very run down but now totally renovated and gorgeous. Went in and I got my Chanel refills for my travel perfume! Can only get the refills alone here, everywhere else you, have to buy the whole thing, so it is always my Paris mission!
Then we kept wandering - bought a baguette and some plums which we ate on a bench in the Tuileries, then walked in from the river towards Place d’Opera and had coffee/hot chocolate at a favourite cafe there.
After a cruise through Galeries Lafayette we went up as far as Concorde then crossed over and went down the Left Bank turning in at the Pont Neuf to go to another favourite square - Place Dauphine for rehydration- beer and Campari …then by the time we walked further down the river it was time for our dinner at Petit Pontoise at 7. Lovely dinner, they have never let us down - starters were a snail cassolette and an artichoke and Parmesan tarte tatin which we shared, and Amr had fish and I had kidneys for mains…so perfect…and before you ask, Paul, we had a Pinot noir from Burgundy (to get us in the mood as we will be there tomorrow)! Walking back was so beautiful - it doesn’t get dark till almost 9 and lovely sunset looking back at Notre Dame - still being repaired after the fire.
Now back and must sleep…felt a bit fuzzy at some stages during the day, but now unfortunately not too bad…half a pill and reading my book should fix it. I’ve probably forgotten some tidbit I meant to say…but will now add photos.Weiterlesen

ReisenderI’m so envious it all looks wonderful and without the usual hordes of tourists, what a great time to be travelling. Can’t wait for Burgundy.

Vézelay, and Day 1 of our French Camino

It was quite an adventure getting to Vézelay. We planned a 10.33 departure from Paris Bercy, which entailed a change at Auxerre to get to Sermizelles, which is the closest station to Vézelay, from where you take a taxi - 10 kms or so. So we left with plenty of time to wheel our bags to the station, stopping for breakfast at a cafe (coffee, croissant/baguette, juice). All perfect, and the train left at exactly 10.33 and we were impressed and thought “how Swiss”…then, after about an hour or more, suddenly at a station everyone seemed to get out…didn’t hear any announcement but obviously something was afoot…so we got out too and realised that everyone was moving to the front section which was the part continuing to Auxerre…so we all crammed in, with bags (it is Saturday so many people off for the weekend and having fun). Only about 15 minutes to Auxerre, and when we enquired about the train on to Avallon (via Sermizelles) found that it in fact was a bus - luckily we asked or we would have waited on the platform for ever…so we all boarded the bus which drove us through the gorgeous countryside to Sermizelles - a tiny place. There was one taxi there, which other people were hopping in, but he said he’d come back for us in 15 minutes which he did, and we finally got here!
Booked into hotel which was expecting us, and large envelope with maps and instructions waiting in our room, plus booking at a restaurant over the square - to which we are going now, so will continue later…
Now back from dinner, and will try to remember the whole day…but before I forget, I must add things that I forgot to say yesterday about Paris - one is that while Paris is busy it was delightfully not crowded..partly could be that Parisiens leave in August, but there were noticeably no Asian or American tourists (and we were probably the only Australian tourists!)…it was unusual hardly ever hearing any language but French, and not fighting crowds in all the popular places. And another thing is the mask situation…obviously it is mandatory to wear them inside in public areas. It would drive us crazy at home (which I think is happening now, and maybe even outside) but here we have to behave, and it is very casual (and totally tokenism)…everyone has one handy in their pocket, on their wrist, under their chin…and uses it when necessary, or borrows one when dashing inside etc….totally useless, as they are reused and reused…but seems to be part of life…so weird and totally unFrench! We are almost used to it…???
Anyway, here we are in Vézelay on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. We were last here in May 1999…we walked up the one main street to the basilica right up on the top of the hill, and it was gleaming white - cleaned from the grey stone it had been 22 years ago and just sparkling. We soon saw many fancily dressed people congregating and realised that a wedding must be about to happen so stood with the many other (French) tourists to watch. I think the invitations must have specified to wear a flamboyant hat as it looked more so than Melbourne Cup day! After that spectacle we did some wandering, but much of that we will do tomorrow when we have the whole day. Another thing I forgot to say about yesterday was that our “wanderings” were over 17 kms, so more than our first day of real walking will be..so good practice. Then we looked for camino signs and finally found them and feel reassured…had been slightly wondering if we would be plunged into a difficult signage situation …but hopefully not! More tomorrow as Amr is going to sleep and he promised to keep awake and read this and make sure I put everything in…oh yes, we lit a candle for Ira in the beautiful St Madeleine basilica…and we have just had a lovely first pèlerin dinner…will include photo of the entrees- a beetroot “tartare”, and poached eggs on little rounds of baguette with a sauce of meat/wine/mushroom (sort of juices of boeuf Bourguignon)…weird but delicious! And we had a carafe of Burgundy wine, not named but Paul will be glad to know that they were Paul-approved glasses!Weiterlesen

Peaceful Sunday in Vézelay

Another perfect day. Lovely breakfast at the hotel - buffet of all the good things - cheeses, prosciutto, boiled eggs, cereals, croissants, juice, coffee…this is a reasonably modest hotel, but this is probably a better breakfast than we may have at many places on our pilgrimage!
After that good start, we went to the Picasso museum where there aren’t many actual works of his, but really a collection of Christian Zervos’ memories of him - he was a friend and admirer of Picasso and there are many letters etc …interesting. The museum is in one of the stone buildings with walls a metre thick . In fact Vézelay is just a line of these stone buildings, centuries old, occasionally there is a gap between buildings, but mostly joined. And the one main street leading up to the Basilica. I said how beautifully it has been cleaned, and will include a photo showing some side areas where it has not yet been treated and you can imagine how the whole building looked 20 years ago!
Amr and I walked round the perimeter of the walls at least 3 times today…such a beautiful walk view in all directions. Being still the weekend there were many visitors. This reminds me a little of Conques during the last French camino, which is also a picturesque town on a hill with a magnificent basilica - and also a favourite venue for weddings! A lovely place to have a weekend getaway. One success during the morning was that Amr was able to buy a walking stick! His old one had broken and he planned to buy a new one, but rejected the opportunity in Paris saying he would get it in Vézelay…I did warn him that I didn’t think they would have pilgrim shops, and there aren’t (like St Jean Pied de Port, or even Le Puy)…but coming out of the museum this morning I spotted some in a nicknack shop just by pure luck, so he doesn’t have to start walking stick-less. It is even a collapsible one that he can pack in his bag!!
Another funny thing to report is that in the square (not actually square) in one section there were 11 Maseratis all parked together. Quite weird…could there have been a Maserati conference?? Anyway, they have all gone now.
After all this gentle activity we went at about 5 pm to a Cave de vins de Bourgogne and had a beautiful glass of local Pinot noir. While there we perused the instructions for walking tomorrow with slight trepidation! They sound so detailed and complicated and we hope there are markers that make these instructions superfluous…but it is all part of the adventure, and we just know that we have to be at Asnois at 3pm to have a taxi ride to our hotel which is in another town! The man at the wine Cave said that both Asnois and Clamecy (where we spend the night) are both lovely towns, as is everything round here, so we can’t go wrong really. All will be excellent! Dinner tonight at the restaurant at the inn where we stayed in 1999…Amr plans to have the tête de veau!! Details later.Weiterlesen

A little addition

We have now had dinner, and a few small things to add. Amr did have his tête de boeuf and I had a salade de Bourgogne- a beautiful bowl of leaves with ham, cheese, pickled onions and mushrooms, and topped with a poached egg…yum. And of course a pinot noir in glasses like ours - not Paul approved, but familiar. I finished with a crème caramel. The funny thing was that the French are inclined to bring their dogs to restaurants…in Paris this is very elegant, but tonight there were 2 dog tables. One with 2 big dogs, and another with 1 medium. The trouble started when the 2 big dogs were leaving and the 1 medium could not control himself…we were laughing to hear the owner saying “çà suffit”….anyway finally he settled down, then another came in, and sat at the table next to us…but this time it was not so much fuss…calmer vibes perhaps…. We were in the outside covered area which is very pleasant to sit in, but we were cold…maybe jet lag after 4 days, or the strange weather. It is delightfully cool, not really summery, but when the sun peeps out and it isn’t windy can get quite warm, then it gets cold again. Some people were in t-shirts and others in down jackets, so maybe it’s not just us! When we walked back we noticed a clear sky and were shivering! Tomorrow may have showers, so we will be prepared for anything. Tomorrow is day 3 of our programme, but our first walking day. We finish on day 51, and have a total of 42 days of walking - having 5 towns where we have a rest day. So tomorrow is the beginning….Weiterlesen

We Did It! First Walking day was Great.

We are now at Clemecy, a gorgeous little town, where we spend the night. We walked to Asnois and had a taxi ride to here - and we now understand why, as Asnois is tiny has no place to stay at all…not even a cafe that we could see.
Anyway, we set off still with a little trepidation, and to our joy the signs were quite good, and the written instructions and maps which sounded so complicated were actually helpful and mostly quite accurate! Phew. We were in theory wishing we were following the familiar red and white markers of the GR, but we are getting used to the blue and yellow Compostelle markers. Only once when we were walking through and round a field of sunflowers did we doubt our directions, but when we studied the maps again we discovered that in fact we were right, and found the little path leading us out and on to Asnois.
The beginning when we left Vézelay was through forests, very pretty. The weather was perfect for walking - cloudy, cool at first, then a glimpse of sun occasionally, and now even lots of blue sky. After lots of forest we came to the edge of the trees and had an amazing expanse of open fields - sunflowers (which are now at the stage of facing down and dying, but the fields still look yellow) and stubble of grain crops, rolled up hay, and some cows. Not a sign of a vineyard….I wondered if we had left the wine country…but no, when we drove with M. Rollin, our taxi driver, we passed many many vineyards and we are definitely still in the wine country! We had texted him in French to say where we were waiting for him, and I think he thought we understood more than we did. We got the gist, but sometimes the details went over our heads. There are several rivers and canals here, all very picturesque.
After settling into our room at the Hostellerie de la Poste, and doing our washing, we have wandered round a bit…some amazing ancient looking wooden buildings….absolutely nothing in these small towns is new or modern…I find it just so charming.
Anyway, here we are, having a beer in a bar, relaxing and feeling very good. We walked only about 16 kms for the walk and it was very comfortable. We have dinner at the hotel, and tomorrow our friendly taxi driver collects us at 9 am and drives us to Saligny where we continue our walk, and our bags on to Varzy where we spend tomorrow night. (We miss a few kms between Asnois and Saligny but that is fine!) So all is going smoothly, and we are ecstatic!!Weiterlesen

Second walk, now at Varzy

Before I recount our quite eventful day, I have to mention our dinner last night. We were staying at a small town hotel, not posh but just how we like it. We had “demi pension” so dinner was part of the deal. Last night was one of those surprises that happen from time to time on our pilgrimages…instead of the usual tasty and hearty menu de jour we were treated to a fine dining experience! I mean in the food, not formality…we even had a choice - I started with a gazpacho made of melon with prosciutto and mint leaves in it, Amr had sardines, we both had ocean trout for main (with fish knives) with an amazing beetroot sauce and some vege froth - MasterChef worthy - and for dessert Amr expected a chocolate cake and I expected a plum tart - well they both were also works of art - deconstructed little mounds of yumminess. I’m not saying it very well, but will put in photos…it was all a treat!
So we set off this morning at 9 am - our taxi man drove us to Saligny, and we set off from there, the route marked well. I was carrying the pages of our guide (we just rip out the ones relevant for the day - they are helpful mostly, but sometimes complicate issues, but we feel more secure with these as the markings aren’t always visible, and are impossible when walking through fields or along a road with hedges and no posts or trees…anyway, after about a kilometre I found I had dropped the notes..they had fallen out of my pocket, so we retraced our tracks and found it, but I was in disgrace and did feel bad, as it is very frustrating to go back…and after that Amr was worried that my phone would also fall out…a bit of a tense time for a while! But we couldn’t stay tense as we went through such magnificent countryside. Again rolling fields of stubble, and today we saw fields of a new planting of some vegetables - perhaps cabbages or beets (I’m thinking Spain) in the ex-stubble fields, and there was also some new corn fields looking very green and vibrant. And still the many fields of drooping sunflowers. Memorable moment was seeing a street “rue du temps perdu” in a small town Cuncy-les-Varzy, and also passing a pilgrims’ wash house as we walked up a long hill.
We still didn’t see any vineyards, except again in the short taxi ride to Saligny…where our man pointed out several new vine plantings only 4 or 5 years old, and some even younger ones. Our walking was a little fraught as we weren’t always convinced we were on the right path, the blue and yellow signs are not as distinctive as the red and white GR ones. And I have to mention that yesterday we saw not another soul walking, and today we did meet 2 women taking an afternoon stroll (who were able to confirm that we were on the route de Compostelle) but this is a total contrast to the camino through Spain, and even the French one from Le Puy, where there were not many but some others. It is the time when people go back to work and school etc after the summer, but September is one of the busiest times in Spain. Probably full of retirees like us! Anyway, that is probably we get a bit stressed when unsure as there aren’t others to follow!
It was a fairly comfortable 16 kms, though some long uphill stretches, and we arrived in Varzy at about 2.30. Found our B and B and this is another special and different experience. Our hostess is Jacqueline, an 82 year old delightful woman, who welcomed us and offered us a very appreciated beer on arrival. Her house is an 18C building, once a post office, when horses brought the mail, and is large and rambling and with a lovely chaotic garden where our washed clothes are drying in the sun and breeze - (she also asked if we needed any washing done so you can imagine our delight - we both stripped off all our clothes and it is done!). We have the upstairs which has 2 bedrooms - we have a choice, and more little rooms where we could make tea, and a bathroom - with a handheld shower where you need to sit in a small square bath - I decided it wasn’t the night to wash my hair. The whole place is full of knicks and knacks, probably reminiscent of her colourful life…she has lived in Algeria, Vietnam, Cambodia according to Amr who had a long conversation with her…she speaks only French and mostly we get it, specially Amr who is better at listening and understanding than me. She is making dinner for us so that will be fun and an experience too….different from yesterday! Will as usual add a separate entry with more photos, too many good ones from today.Weiterlesen

Easy beautiful walk to Champlemy

A lovely easy walk of 10 kms today, under cloudless sky, about 15° when we started, but now 24°, and a light breeze. Perfect. But first, dinner and breakfast with Jacqueline. We came down for dinner at the appointed hour and found there was a dining room - as chaotic and cluttered with mementos on every surface as the other rooms. The table was set for 2, but she would sometimes join us for a little wine or cheese…there was a TV on which we liked, to hear the news and get our ears attuned to French…so it was a proper dinner - some amuse-bouche to start (tiny endive leaves with little goodies in them), melon and local prosciutto-type meat, a veal, mushroom and potato casserole (also a local specialty), cheeses and fruit salad enriched with some nameless liqueur! Local wines, not famous but lovely to us - and we had to change to red when we got to the cheeses. She sat and chatted and was quite delightful and we felt very spoilt. Went upstairs to our “suite” and had to close the door as her white cat likes to come up and explore. This morning breakfast at 8.30 and again the royal treatment. …there were croissants, pains au chocolat, baguette, brioche, home made jams, fresh fruit, bowls of really good coffee…what a perfect start to the day, and she insisted we made up a baguette with cheese and ham for our lunch, and as we were leaving popped a bag of tomatoes from the garden in our bag!! Had them at lunchtime and they are the sweetest and tastiest tomatoes I’ve had in a long time…so each day is a new dining and accommodation experience…
Walked off feeling very leisurely knowing it was to be a 10 km walk. Visited the 12C church in Varzy, S. Pierre, and it’s famous triptych on our way out, then followed a fairly well marked way. No agonising today about directions. We walked at first through lots of forest and now and then came out into the sweeping fields - still drooping sunflowers, corn or freshly ploughed…so soothing and beautiful. And now and then there would be the white cows - Charolais, famous in this region. We actually met 2 walkers today!! Going in the opposite direction, a Polish man and French woman, heading to Vézelay. Otherwise we were alone.
Arrived here in Champlemy at about 12.30. Found a stone bench and had a break and lunch in a shady spot right beside the said cows, who all came over and stared at us the whole time we were there…it almost felt intrusive!! We wandered into the town (another tiny place) and saw a cafe actually open (also an agent for La Poste) and had a coffee/hot chocolate…
We had an indecipherable map of where to find our guest house, but from the cafe saw a chambres d’hôtes, and a 35 on the building just opposite- we had seen no street names - but guessed that probably was our place, and it was…we went over and were welcomed and expected. Our bags were waiting, all perfect. We have a big light airy room, sort of a family room with a double bed, and 2 singles. Windows looking out to the garden, where we may go and sit and read later. So again, all SO good.
Tomorrow is a 21 km walk, the longest so far, but normal or short in our other Caminos…so hope we find it easy still!! We end up in La Charité sur Loire, but have a transfer to Arbourse to start the walk. What luxury! I guess it would otherwise have been 31 kms…. Anyway, now relaxing, Amr is doing some yoga to stretch, and I am feet up on the bed writing up the day..Weiterlesen

Now at Charité sur Loire

First, last night’s dinner…lovely little, slightly bird-like, woman was our hostess, and there was one other man also staying and having dinner. There were several others, but not dining (they appeared at breakfast)…we were in this beautiful ancient house - pre revolution (i.e. late 1700s) and will add photo - Amr was drooling over the chair but that wasn’t as old! Anyway, we started with a large bowl of lentil and vegetable soup (also with ham)…delicious, but it could quite happily have been my whole meal! But of course it continued - a plate of fish, with a tarragon sauce and carrots and potatoes, a cheese course and a dessert of semolina with fruit….I’ll have to do a heck of a lot walking to not gain weight!! Anyway, it was lovely, and also breakfast with the usual fresh croissants and coffee etc etc…
So we set off, knowing this was the longest day so far. And I was mentally writing this as we were walking, a beautiful, calm, easy even if long walk…as the first half, or maybe third was just gorgeous - the usual expanses of vineyards (yes, vineyards today), drooping sunflowers, corn and stubble or ploughed fields as we walked along gentle paths, and then went into forests. The forest walking was gentle as it was shady and mostly level with small ups and downs. It was a serious forest area, and we passed a sawmill, and passed many huge piles of logs waiting to be hauled away….BUT it went on and on, and the shade became unrelenting sun, and it is a hot day…
We stopped at approximately half way for a break and lunch and felt rejuvenated, but suddenly the last 10 kms seemed endless (to me), I think Amr was fine! I have to admit that my SI joints were killing me - my legs, hips and shoulders were fine…I did some forward folds to stretch them from time to time, and we got here fine. Actually it was funny, as we were in the town, which is larger than most from the last few days, and we saw a bar that was open and Amr said let’s have a beer here, and I said let’s get near the hotel (which we knew was on this street), and there was our hotel “Mille et une Feuilles” ..so we each had an enormous beer, checked in and now have had showers, done washing and feel revived!
Today was a lovely walk really, despite my complaints…it is as far as we will be walking, so I will accommodate and am very positive! But I may take some prophylactic anti-inflammatories! Now off to explore and fine the Loire!! We have never seen it before, and we need to find a little place for dinner as not included tonight…life is good!Weiterlesen

Beautiful Guest House at Villquiers

As usual, I must finish yesterday before launching into today. Charité-sur-Loire is a charming town, and after showering and regaining our equilibrium (and in my case taking some anti-inflammatories) we went down the Main Street that led down to the Loire. A large river at this point…we walked across the bridge, and realised that we had only got to an island in the middle and that there was an equal expanse yet to cross! That is how we walked out today, so we didn’t go further last night, but we did spy an eatery that appealed, outside beside the river…and have to confess that it was a French style Italian pizzeria! Shameful, but we saw their salad lists and really wanted a light meal after that rather large ones we had been having. By 7 when they opened there was a little crowd waiting, but we got a table outside and were very happy, with the stunning view back to the town. I think this must be quite a place to visit, as there seemed to be tourists, not just us! It is charming and historic like almost everything here, and again I think I read 12C buildings - probably church and walls.
So back to our hotel - the 1001 Leaves refers to books, not trees, as you will see from photo. One funny thing - everywhere has its peculiarity - but this was the toilet…I challenged Amr to flush it…there was a notice saying to push the white button and hold…with an arrow…but I couldn’t see any button. Amr finally did find it almost totally hidden on the side of the toilet bowl itself, and after a few seconds of pressing there were sounds of rushing water..! Part of the travel tapestry! I am relieved that we worked it out…
So we set off this morning at about 8.30. We didn’t want to be late as we had to be at a town, Couy, at 4 pm to be picked up by our hosts tonight to be taken to their guest house - off the track. We had tons of time, but didn’t want to feel pressed, and it was a 20 km walk. I was a bit nervous after getting the back aches yesterday, but after a good night’s rest (and the pills) all was absolutely fine today, so have my confidence back…phew. We did make sure we had breaks etc, which we needed, as by the afternoon it got very hot again.
But setting out it was just gorgeous, cool, partly cloudy and we walked through the usual farmland with ploughed fields and the ubiquitous sunflowers, still far from being totally dead and black that they have to be before harvest. Then through more forest, with piled up logs and deliciously cool. We came to a town which actually had a cafe open - a rare event in these small places - so stopped for coffee and hot chocolate. Then set off through more fields and it was almost like the meseta in Spain. Endless farmland in every direction, and we were walking on very rough almost invisible grassy paths (that is not like Spain!)…no markings possible here and we did sometimes doubt if we were on the right track, but we’d suddenly end up in the right place…we are getting quite good and relaxed at interpreting the signs and instructions. Anyway, after emerging from tracking through the endless fields we found a small town with a shady bench to stop and have lunch…finished off the bread and cheese and apple that we had…and then set off on the last leg rejuvenated and quite sprightly, compared to yesterday, but it was hot.
Of course we were early - I think a little after 3, but we planned to sit and read and relax till being picked up at 4…but of course Couy is tiny and no open bar, and the only seat in front of the church, our pick up point, was in the sun…so we were delighted when our (again) lovely hostess turned up, in a ute, and drove us here to their gorgeous place. It is a farm, with guest rooms, just charming and we are the only people tonight so can spread out and wander round freely. Dinner at 7, and I know it will be a delicious home cooked meal…she has already said there is a soup with vegetables from the garden…but I know there will be lots more.
Tomorrow we get dropped back to Couy and walk 15 kms to Brécy.Weiterlesen

ReisenderAre there any mask or Covid vaccination requirements in your hotels along the way?

ReisenderOfficially masks required inside in public places, but in guest houses we don’t think of it…Monique, our hostess last night wore one to hide a skin lesion that had been treated! Our Oz covid Vacc digital certificate is always accepted, if they ask for it, which they don’t always.

Another Beautiful Day - now at Brécy

Actually, we’re a bit beyond Brécy, but will come to that later! The day started with a lovely breakfast - the usual croissants, coffee etc, but also a pot each of home made yum yogurt and a loaf of brioche warm from the oven.. We were driven back to Couy to start walking from where we had left off. Luckily we had studied our notes and realised that Couy to Brécy was 20 kms, not the 15 mentioned in the itinerary, so that was not an unexpected nasty surprise!
We started off in the usual beautiful cool morning at about 9 - at exactly 9 actually, because the 9 o’clock church bells rang just then! We went through the pretty farmland, but still the vast expanses of grain crops (we discovered sorghum) not many cows and no vineyards. By about 11 it started getting hot, but we made easy time and we’re at Villabon, the half way mark by about midday - stopped for coffee/chocolate, Amr found a supermarket to buy fizzy water and cheese for tomorrow and all good. We found a shady park to sit under a tree and eat the baguette and cheese that Monique, yesterday’s hostess had given us, and also sweet tomatoes out of her garden.
Started the hot afternoon, a stretch beside a country road, not busy, but had to walk on the uneven grassy edge when cars came, then blissfully diverted into the forest and had several kilometres of shady beautiful walking through tall trees. Then back to the road and the last few kms into Brécy. This vast countryside is so like the meseta as I said before….and it is also very flat, can’t complain at all about trudging uphill, just flat and very straight roads or paths.
So we arrived at Brécy at almost exactly 21kms, and felt good, we had arrived. Walking past the Mairie lots of decorated cars and we could see that a wedding was on - Saturday afternoon. But we couldn’t find an open bar for a beer before we found our accommodation. So we consulted the map to show where we had to go, and the D12 was highlighted for an inch or so…so we turned up the D12 which was the road we had been following quite a lot of the day, and expected our BandB would appear soon, but no…after getting confirmation from 2 different people, we finally found it 4 kms from Brécy!
But the good parts are a) we made it without feeling bad walking-wise - added up to 26 kms total, and b) we are at another divine, though completely different, guest house, with another characterful old lady, who expected and welcomed us, and had been expecting us to call from Brécy for a lift! (She will give us a lift in the morning!)…we had a beer, and a shower, and dinner will be in 20 mins and can smell delicious smells. There is also a Dutchman, travelling round on motorcycle, here for dinner, and also a family out till midnight at a family festivity.
This is an old (16C) house, beautiful thick stone walls keeping it cool, charming in lovely garden. We converse totally in French and get most of it…except with the Dutchman..(we thought he was a Pom till he told us) who knew that some crazy Aussies were expected. Another colourful day!Weiterlesen

At Bourges for 2 days

Thank god for Marie-Solange, our last night’s hostess! After our long walk yesterday as promised she drove us this morning, whizzing along these country roads which she obviously knows like the back of her hand, and we didn’t have a clue where we were going till she stopped in the middle of nowhere and said this is the chemin, it is 10 kms to Bourges and there is the cathedral in the distance! So we found in our notes where we were, and walked on through fields and then the suburban outskirts of Bourges and arrived. It again was SO hot, after 10.30 we were wiping drops of sweat from our brows, so the 10 kms that we didn’t have to walk were magic! It was 31° when we arrived, and now at 8.45pm it is still 26°…
Anyway, I must relate the details of last night. First, the accommodation…our room was very small, and opposite was the Dutchman, Edwin (presume that’s his name - Marie-S called him Edwina)…normally we would have shared a bathroom with him, but she said we could use another one where people weren’t staying. So we discovered the complicated arrangement of rooms upstairs! The family had 2 rooms with lots of beds and an allocated bathroom. Then we went along to an area with a kitchen area, with a shower stall about the size of a telephone booth (Amr could just manage without waving his arms widely), which led to a bedroom with 2 big wooden double beds, end on end, on one side and on the other side a big antique wooden wardrobe, a toilet and a wash basin!! We said that was just fine, and let Edwin have his own space, but have to admit it was weird to sit on a toilet in the middle of a bedroom…and while there I noticed a door in the wall next to one of the beds. Goodness knows where it led - thought it was the end of the house!! So it was a fun and slightly weird night. All the cupboards were full of chaotic pillows, blankets etc, and the “kitchen” was equally disorganised, but did have a fridge which was handy.
So dinner was lovely, except too much food as usual. Beautiful salad with the usual delicious home grown tomatoes, a veg quiche/frittata (which would have been quite enough) and a dish of chicken and potatoes. M-S had a little wine with us, and a bit of food, but said she had her main meal in the middle of the day…but we had a lovely time chatting to Edwin who is now wending his way home to Amsterdam…and amazingly, we helped him with the French - usually Dutch are so multilingual- but French was not his forte and we interpreted for him a bit!!! And M-S chatted solely in French - no English at all. This morning a breakfast laid for all, but we three were appointed at 8, and at about 8.30 children appeared from the family who obviously wanted to have breakfast, but wanted us to finish first (? Covid?)…so we did…
Started walking at about 9.45 and for a short while it was pleasant, before the heat. But we were so happy that we didn’t worry…the distant huge cathedral gradually came closer, and we arrived here about 1.30. Came across a market which we wandered into - fruit and veg…Amr is drawn to markets - yesterday when we were hot and bothered and not yet at Brécy he wanted to explore a junk market in Villabon and I would rather have had my teeth pulled…but today it was ok because we were at Bourges..but we didn’t stay long, and instead looked for a bar! A beer was very necessary and being Sunday, and a bigger town, lots of bars were open. At that point, being so hot and sweaty, we decided to go straight to the hotel before we looked around at all. So Amr used his Google maps to guide us there - this town is just a network of little cobbled streets, not long distances, but I would get lost very quickly. Anyway, successfully found our hotel Christina, bags here and room ready! Perfect.
So after showering and relaxing we set off again - still in the heat - and found our way to the famous, enormous and beautiful St Étienne cathedral and marvelled. Impossible to get good photos as it is too massive, but you can get the idea. Looking at restaurants we passed we realised that most do not do dinner on Sunday, so finally found one in the square near the cathedral which did and ate there…it was doing a roaring trade as think it was one of the few places available, and like Vézelay, Bourges is a popular place to visit…we saw quite a few French tourists with maps. So now back at hotel, Amr pretending to read but falling asleep and all is well. Rest day tomorrow…Weiterlesen

Quiet rest day in Bourges

We really have had a quiet day, as it is too hot in the afternoon to do anything! I so hope this Indian summer ends soon…. It was lovely getting up this morning with no time constraints, had the usual satisfying breakfast, and went out on the town again. Pleasantly cool till the sun is overhead, and we found our way up to the cathedral again, and are learning the maze of streets. Even though this is quite a big town, it was very quiet on a Monday morning. We don’t know if it’s covid, but certainly the lack of tourists would be. In some ways it is lovely to be free of groups being guided round, but that means that lots of places are closed. After a coffee break we sat on a shaded seat in a park near the cathedral and read kindles.
Then back to our room to blob and have baguette and cheese and relax even more. It is nice to intersperse days in guest houses where you are very involved with the hosts, and feel responsible for being a good guest, with impersonal hotel days where you come and go and no one cares!
So we roused ourselves again and found another shady seat in another spot near the cathedral for more kindle moments, and listening to podcasts in Amr’s case. While there I actually did see a group of retiree tourists being taken in a little train to see the sights, but not foreign tourists. Maybe we are the only ones!! Then we went at 5 o’clock to have a beer, much needed, despite not even having walked much, and found that they will be open for dinner tonight - they were closed yesterday…we had spied some nice salads on their menu…so we will return there soon.
Yesterday we lit a candle for Ira in the cathedral - specially for heaven-sent wishes for operation on her wrist and nose today, and she is back and sounds on email as chirpy as ever, so we think it worked. And another personal mention is we are very proud of Liv who did really well in the HSC trials…and those poor kids still have to cope with the very uncertain details of the actual HSC. Anyway, good on Liv!
So off to dinner soon, and tomorrow we walk about 15 kms to a guest house, so will see what new experience that brings! Will try and get most of the walking done before the heat sets in.Weiterlesen

Another unique day - St Florent sur Cher

A perfect start…a taxi arrived on the dot of 9 at the hotel to take us on the first leg of our walk today (dropped us off at La Chapelle St Ursin) and took the bags on to today’s accommodation. So we set off, not too hot yet, and a little breeze and some very welcome forest walks. There was a bit of suburban walking at first, and an industrial zone. One memorable part was walking past a munitions factory…a huge area, with barbed wire fences for miles…anyway, at one stage we heard what sounded to us like a shark alarm, and we laughed and said they’re about to blow us up…and sure enough there WAS the sound of a huge explosion…but on we went and came to Villeneuve Sur Cher, about 9 kms. No cafes open, but we found a shaded picnic table by the river for lunch…perfect.
Then we had to strike out from the chemin. Our lodging tonight is in St Florent sur Cher, about 5 kms off route, and we set off along the road - only made the day’s total to 16 kms, and this was planned, not a surprise! It was getting hot by now, so we were SO glad to arrive at the town…a woman stopped her car to ask us if we were walking the chemin de Compostelle and was quite excited as she had walked parts of it, and even offered us a lift, but we were almost there, she said take a left down the hill and it sounded easy. All we knew was that we were staying at a gîte called Le Faisanderie.
That was when the complications started (we probably should have taken the lift!)…we turned left into rue de la faisanderie, and it was a street with houses, but no gîte…we asked some people and they said it was a long way (our hearts dropped)…but she only meant about 10 mins walk thank goodness, but we ploughed on getting discouraged as no sign…another woman said yes, keep on, in the forêt, and we followed the path and found a beautiful huge estate, with closed gates, no sign “Le Faisanderie”….at this point I sat in the shade under a tree, and Amr called the number of the place…yes, this was the house, were there animals - yes we’d seen 2 horses wandering round, and some dogs…yes, this was right - shed phone her son in law who was minding it with her daughter (she herself was on holiday)…so Roman came and welcomed us, lovely and even spoke very good English, and Anna his partner who is German and an English teacher. She is cooking dinner tonight.
But the amazing thing is the accommodation. That is - ours. It is a huge estate with garden, woods, various separate buildings, animals and 2 peacocks just walked past as I’m writing this. (At the moment we are sitting beside the pool, having cooled off with a beer)! There is a small row of bedrooms like a gîte, which is apparently full tonight. But our place is a little separate gypsy caravan!! It is quite amazing as you will see…tiny and perfect…complete with bathroom, and even a kitchen area! Another unique experience….so happy!Weiterlesen

More conventional today - at Issoudun

It is almost 4 o’clock and still so hot…it says 29°, feels like 31° on the app, and certainly feels like it. But am sitting up in a conventional hotel room in Issoudun, very nice, Amr is doing yoga and I must do some yin as I felt a tingle in my SI joint again…the thunderstorm is predicted for about 7 pm and I think it will be a relief and cool everything. I gather there has been a very cool and wet August and most people are delighted with the hot burst…but not me. It was good to get moving again after our lazy rest day in Bourges. It was better to be walking and doing something, than not getting the energy to get up when you don’t have to! But today we were very clever we thought.
Our instructions were to walk from St Florent to Issoudun. We had walked more than 5 kms off the track to get to St Florent from Villeneuve, and from Villeneuve to Issoudun added up to about 23 looking at the instructions…total of possible 28 kms…so we called the taxi to get a lift back, and he was the same taxi that was booked to take our bags anyway, so no problems. And a bonus was that, as it was going to be so hot today still, we got the taxi to drop us at a closer town - Chârost - so we only had to walk about 17 kms by the time we got to the hotel - Les Trois Rois. Thank god, because I’m still boiling.
Last night remained a delight..we had dinner outside by the pool…salad and a veg tart (all from the garden of course) and chicken and potatoes, goat cheese and melon. Just divine…still light till 8.30-9pm. We found out that the main house was once a Royal hunting lodge in the days when kings and princes went hunting. Now such a peaceful oasis.
Went back to our little caravan after dinner - amazing how everything worked in that small space…Amr had to watch his head with one low beam, but otherwise all you could want..perfectly functioning bathroom, even a TV! It took a while for the cool evening air to enter and cool the place down - but Amr annoyingly fell fast asleep at 9.15!! It took we till after 11, because firstly it was much too early for me, and also I had to wait till the air got deliciously cooler…that is one thing here…there is usually just a big doona on the bed, so it is all or nothing…no chance of a light covering.
Breakfast again outside by the pool and we hopped in the taxi with our luggage at 9 am. Uneventful walk, but still the vast fields in every direction, with occasional clumps of trees in the middle. Got a little off track on our way in through a boring rather industrial part, we cut across a field as we could see the main road we would soon need…came across a big supermarket and bought supplies for lunch, and for tomorrow, and walked on an sat in a little square on a shady seat, and found we were exactly where we should have arrived, from a different road, by the correct route. Easy to find our hotel, and now showered etc will go and explore before the storm…Weiterlesen

Neuvy Pailloux - cooler and easier

First I will relate the end of yesterday, Wednesday, as again we had one of those surprise fabulous dinners. First we looked round Issoudun which was a more bustling small town than we’d almost seen anywhere. Shops were open and there were people visibly doing things and bars open in the main square. We tracked down our walking route out of town for this morning, not difficult, and then sat in the square for a beer. Still extremely hot.
Dinner was 7.30, and in our little hotel. Arriving at the dining room we could see we were in for a treat. Immaculately set tables, Paul approved glasses, and lovely menu. I started with a “taboulé”of tuna, quinoa and herbs with an amazing sauce, Amr had carpaccio of tête de veau, we both had pan fried whole trout with amazing vegetables (note in the photo the little plastic bird that is in fact a lemon squeezer) (and don’t note my face which was still blazing from the heat). On the list for desserts and fromages there was “omelette norvégien” and I asked what it was, imagining some cheesy eggy thing, but she said meringue, and it turned out to be a sort of mini bomb alaska!! (I guess that’s where the Norwegian came in)…So we shared one! Such a lovely way to end rather a hot and less interesting day.
So this morning we set off before 9 as we wanted to arrive at Neuvy Pailloux by 2pm, as Cécile had warned us that the hotel reception would be closed between 2 and 5. Easy, as only about 15 kms, and it turned out to be an easy and pleasant walk. It was still more of the same open plains - ploughed fields, sunflowers and today some rapeseed for the first time. But the difference was it was cool!! It did rain in the night, though not thunder, and the temperature had dropped to a very pleasant level, and there was mostly a high cloud cover - made all the difference. The directions were clear, and the signage good. We had to turn off the true path at Thizay - a small town, and come 2 kms off track to here and our hotel. I think it is the only place between Issoudun and Châteauroux where we go tomorrow, so will have to walk the extra kms back to the track, plus the 21 km on to Châteauroux, so a longer day tomorrow, but we know and will take it easy.
Meanwhile we are having a wonderful afternoon of leisure in our big, airy room, catching up on reading, emails, news (Amr!) as the village of Neuvy Pailloux is tiny, and we have already seen it. Dinner here tonight. They were doing a roaring trade at lunch time, but I don’t anticipate an experience like last night (this hotel is on a big main road), but you never know - this is France.Weiterlesen
