    Queenstown/Wanaka

    Next we arrived in Queenstown, the adrenaline junkie capital of NZ. We spent 2 days here. Initially the weather was pretty poor and we went on a tourist boat showing us the different parts of Queenstown, including the million dollar district where the average value of all the properties was over 1 million dollars! That evening we went to a fancy ice bar where everything was made of Ice, the temperature was -5 Celsius. It was great fun. However we were only allowed 30 minutes in the bar and I don't think either of us could have done much longer! Next day we jumped straight into the adrenaline life style going on a jet boat which was great fun even better that Susie didn't get sick! And I did the Nevis Swing, the largest canyon swing in the world...I couldn't persuade Susie to join me on that! We also went for a slap up steak dinner that night, because we felt we needed to be spoiled a bit more.
    Next day we travelled to Wanaka a slightly more laid back version of Queenstown. We went to a old school cinema where the seats were sofas and you could take wine and dinner into the cinema with you which was a cool experience. Here we also went to Cardrona ski resort to do a days skiing! It was great fun the resort was a lot smaller than any in Europe but the weather and snow were great!    Okumaya devam et

    The North

    Our final stint in New Zealand. We spent a lot of time sight seeing - the highlight of which for me was Abel Tasman which was very pretty. Doug had two flights - the first was a scenic flight over the glaciers and mount cook in a helicopter. The second was a flight for whale watching where he managed to see a sperm whale. I bowed out gracefully of both flights as I felt I'd already done enough spewing on this trip. We took a day trip over to the north island to revisit Wellington and went back to the museum to see the Gallipoli campaign which we missed last time. We also did a wine tour in the Marlborough district and had a lovely spa day at Hanmer SpringsOkumaya devam et

    FIJI

    After New Zealand we spent 10 days relaxing on Fiji. Firstly we spent 5 nights on the island of Mana. Here we relaxed on the beaches and snorkelled. We had a boat trip to the island where castaway was filmed but unfortunately when we got there they were doing more filming so we weren't allowed to set foot on the island. Another day we visited cloud 9, which is a floating bar in the middle of the ocean - this was great fun. We made some great friends on this island and all the Fiji locals were great fun. The rest of the time was spent exploring the mainland but to be honest this didn't compare to the islands. Im afraid this will be the last blog post for a while as we now fly to Australia to work and earn some much needed cash!Okumaya devam et

    AUSTRALIA - Sydney

    After working for four weeks in the outback (Broken Hill) I joined Jane and Laura in Sydney for the first of four weeks travelling up the East Coast of Australia. We spent the first week exploring Sydney while Doug spent an extra week working.
    We spent a large amount of time seeing the sights of Sydney, including the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.
    We spent one day being ladies of leisure and went on a wine tour of the Hunter Valley.
    We also spent a day at the zoo and plenty of time lunching and drinking wine.
    At the end of the week we met Doug, picked up our hire car and started travelling up the coast...    Okumaya devam et

    Fraser Island

    From Sydney we started our travels up the coast. Our first stop was Byron Bay, the surf capital of Australia. None of us had surfed before so we decided to get a beginners lesson. It was great fun even though I spent most of the time falling off!
    Next stop was Brisbane - here we visited Australia zoo (Steve Irwins zoo) the highlight was definitely holding Koalas and feeding Kangaroos.
    We then headed to Rainbow beach where we started a three day tour of Fraser Island. Unfortunately this is where the rain started (more on this on my next blog post.... it has been never ending!). Despite the rain we had a great time. To get around the island you had to drive 4x4s along the beach (which acted as the main road for the island) so there was lots of getting stuck in the sand and splashing in the sea. We visited lots of pretty places and the famous ship wreck. On the way home it took an hour to drive back to the boat and we were driving as fast as possible as the tide was coming in. In the end we only had a couple of meters between the sea and the end of the beach - 10 more minutes and we wouldnt have made it! Safe to say our guide was getting a little nervous at this point and kept telling us to drive faster over the walky talkies!    Okumaya devam et

    Whitsundays

    After getting stranded in the town of Gin Gin due to roadblocks because of the rain we finally made it to Airlie Beach. The first day here we went on a jet ski tour. It was great fun even though I feared for my life when Doug was driving - I think he forgot I was on the back most of the time, or just assumed I'd fallen off and was using it as the perfect opportunity to have some time away from me!
    The next day we set off on a sailing boat around the Whitsundays. The boat was very basic and having around 30 people staying downstairs got very warm but the tour was great. We visited Whitehaven beach which has been voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - and it did not disappoint! Other than this we spent most of the time snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef which was fantastic.    Okumaya devam et

    Cairns

    On our way up to Cairns we stopped half way to spend a day on Magnetic Island. We finally got a day of lovely sunshine and had a great time exploring the beaches. The girls decided to go on a horse trek which was amazing. We rode down to the beach, then took the saddles off so that we could swim in the sea bareback. The horses loved it too!
    Cairns was our final stop - we mainly just relaxed here. Doug went on a trip to the great barrier reef which he said was great but I gave it a miss as I felt that might be one boat trip too far for me!
    We then said goodbye to Laura and Jane and headed to Darwin for 8 weeks work. With an average daily temperature of 35 degrees we hoped the clinic was well air conditioned!    Okumaya devam et

    Working in Australia

    A quick post to write about our time working in Australia. In September we worked for a month in an RSPCA clinic in Broken Hill. Broken hill is a small city in the outback, pretty much as far away from any other civilisation as you could get. On our first day working here we were brought in a baby kangaroo to treat - luckily the nurses knew exactly what to do as this was our first time even seeing one! We saw many more along with a baby emu too. It was very strange working here - the next town was 4 hours away, so if the clinic didn't have space to see a client they would have to travel 4 hours for another vet! If we wanted to refer a case it would be at least a 7 hour drive to the nearest city!
    Next we worked in Darwin for two months. It was a little busier but so warm! Average daily temp was around 35 C, but the worst part was the humidity! It meant we spent most of our time inside under the air conditioning but we braved a few days out to visit Kakadu and Litchfield National Park. We were also invited to their Christmas party which was a cruise on a yacht - a bit different to British Christmas parties!    Okumaya devam et

    Melbourne

    From Darwin we flew to Melbourne for Christmas! We did another house sit here to save money. We were very lucky only being 10 minutes outside the city centre. Melbourne has countless nice cafes and restaurants. We had to exercise real control to stop ourselves becoming even more blubber filled. Being standard Brits we needed our turkey roast for Christmas dinner and rather than fall out over cooking it we went out for a meal and spent most of the time feeling sorry for the solo eaters close by. We also went to see the fireworks at new year. The rest of the time was spent relaxing, site seeing and eating. Visits to the Eureka sky tower, botanical gardens, the beach, the tourist tram and the Australian moving image centre were all done, along with a trip to the Wallace and Gromit museum. The highlight though being a visit to the 90,000 seater Melbourne Cricket Ground for the third day of the Ashes Boxing Day test. Even Susie enjoyed it (or so she said). Unfortunately after 5 days the end result was a draw!! The highs and lows of cricket!!Okumaya devam et

    Melbourne to Alice Springs

    From Melbourne we started a 10 day tour up to Alice Springs. This was a chance as Ben was nice enough to point out to us to make some friends for a change. The first part of the journey was along the Great ocean road stopping at the famous 12 Apostles. I hated it.....there were too many tourists with their stupid selfie sticks all pushing for THE photo that might mean they get an extra 5 likes on Facebook making 6 in total. On this leg we also visited the Grampians and Adelaide. Which both of us agreed was a lovely city as far as cities go.
    The next leg of our journey was up to Alice Springs. We gained some people on our tour taking the number 14. We were very lucky with the other people on our tour who were all lovely meaning the experience was even better. We also changed our guide who turned out to be a good laugh telling us lie after lie meaning we didn't know quite what to believe. At least 5 times a day shouting oh my god guys look, look to the left....there's a tree!? But it all added to the fun. The temperature along this leg was close to unbearable averaging about 40 degrees!
    Noticeable stops along here included Cooper Peady a small town, only there because of opal mines. Here 70% of the locals lived under ground because it was too hot! We also stopped at Kings Canyon, Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), and the famous Uluru (Ayres Rock). All of which were amazing, the favourite surprisingly being the Olgas. Due to the extreme heat we often were getting up at 4am to avoid the midday sun for our walks. Although we did get to see some amazing sun rises. We also spent 3 nights swag camping. Basically a waterproof sleeping bag allowing us to experience the proper outback. Camping around a fire in the desert no electricity, or toilets. Something I enjoyed. Susie enjoyed the experience but wouldn't do it again, the worst point was a scorpion crawling next to Susie's swag. The big brave tour guide had to save her...(and me).     INDONESIA - Bali

    Our travels in south east Asia started in the island of Bali. The first day we spent on the beach relaxing - here I managed to get burnt through clouds, a parasol and factor 50 so that was brilliant.
    The next day we had a tour around the island - this involved watching a traditional Indonesian dance, visiting temples, rice terraces and a coffee farm. The coffee was special as it was made by feeding it to an animal called a luwak, waiting for it to poo then using the beans from the poo - lovely!
    After this we visited a monkey sanctuary. It was great fun - as soon as you looked as though you might be opening your bag they jumped on you. Doug loved it but I was a bit nervous - eventually I let a little baby monkey sit on my shoulder though.    Okumaya devam et

    Bukit Lawang

    After a day of travelling with two flights and some pretty interesting public transport we arrived in a place called Bukit Lawang. Right on the edge of the rainforest either side of a large river with battered wooden bridges to cross. No obvious roads it was just scooters or walk.
    The day after arriving we set out on our 2 day trek to see Orangutans in the wild. It was a bit of a detour to do this but with this is only 1 of 2 countries in the world where it can be done. The trek was difficult very humid a lot of sweat, no real path so it was very slippy! Parts were more like rock climbing and abseiling!! We got our reward by seeing Mina the worlds most dangerous orangutang. Well known for attacking humans, all of our guides had scars from bites and scratches from her. We managed to get close enough to get good pictures but our guides had to distract her with themselves and in the end told us to run!! We also managed to see some other wild life as well!!
    At night we camped by river under a shelter. In the morning we were visited by another favourite orangutang of our guides. This one christened Jackie!! She was trying to raid our shelter for food. She was harmless according to the guides but they wouldn't give her food to encourage her to return! One time after our guides moved her away from the shelter she decided that she wanted another trophy! ...... Susie!! Luckily being harmless she basically went over held her hand and hugged Suse! She had to go for a swim to clean her knickers after!!

    THAILAND - Krabi

    Next stop was Thailand and we started in Krabi which is a very popular place for tourists due to its stunning beaches. We made the most of this and basically just lazed around on the sand for most of our time here.
    We visited Railay beach first which was lovely but absolutely rammed with tourists. It's very popular for rock climbing but looked a bit too extreme for us to give it a go.
    The next day we went on a day trip to Hong Island where we did some snorkelling and kayaked around the island.
    We also visited the Tiger Cave Temple which was high up on the mountain so we had to walk up over 1200 steps to the top, we did get a good view of the city when we eventually got there.    Okumaya devam et

    Ko Phangan and Ko Tao

    Our next stop was two islands that lie to the east of Thailand. The first was Ko Phangan which is famous for its full moon parties. Luckily me and doug managed to time it just right so that we missed the full moon party - we both agreed we are just too old for that kind of nonsense. Instead we explored the various beaches around the island. We had the 'smart' idea to hire a scooter to drive ourselves around. I have to admit I hated every minute of it - there isn't any set rules on driving on the roads, it's basically just push and shove to get out of junctions, so it wasnt the most enjoyable day. The next day we got a traditional Thai massage which was one of the most painful activities we have done on our travels - Doug even had to ask the lady to stop at one point.
    Next we travelled to Ko Tao where Doug did a days diving experience (I chose just to stick with snorkelling for now). He really enjoyed it and is considering doing his Padi now.    Okumaya devam et

    Bangkok

    Next we spent a couple of days in Bangkok which is the backpackers capital of the world. There was lots of night markets and bars to visit. The first night doug tried one of the local delicacies - a scorpion! It wasn't one of his favourite dishes.
    During the first day we visited various temples and the famous grand palace which was very popular.
    The second day we visited the floating markets. These were made as many people used to travel to work via the river in boats, so many locals would sell them things on the way past. Now it's just a tourist attraction but was very cool.    Okumaya devam et

    CAMBODIA - Siem Reap

    From Bangkok we headed into Cambodia for a whistle stop tour. First stop is Seim Reap, home to the famous Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world and according to Cambodia is the 7th wonder of the world, but we have heard that an awful lot on our travels. When we arrived it was amazingly impressive having been built nearly 1000 years ago! Unfortunately photos struggle to do it justice.
    There are many temples around Siem Reap. So one day was dedicated to Angkor Wat, and the next day to the others. Including one that was used to film the new Tomb Raider. Again even these small temples were amazing and we struggled to see how these people so long ago managed to build them. It was fair to say though at the end of day 2 we were templed out!
    Think we will take a break from temples for now!!    Okumaya devam et

    Battambang

    Next we spent a couple of days at Battambang. The first day we hired a Tuk Tuk and visited the prize attraction - the bamboo train. This is effectively sheets of bamboo that are used in the town to transport rice on a railway track. However due to the popularity of this for tourists, the locals found it hard to find time to transport the rice. Therefore a month before now they made a new bamboo train outside the town purely for tourists. This made the experience very strange as it felt like there was no real concept. We arrived, were quickly ushered onto the VIP seats ( I don't know why?) and enjoyed a 10 minute journey before turning back and heading home. Very surreal!
    Next we visited the bat caves and enjoyed a lovely sunset where at the end the bats started to fly out for the night. Apparently millions fly out over the course of an hour, we only stayed for 15 minutes or so but it was pretty cool! There was also yet another temple on the top of the hill to visit.
    The next day we visited a school which was set up to help children living in poor conditions. It was amazing to see all the talented artists and we watched a show to see all of their amazing skills, from hula hooping to dancing.    Okumaya devam et

    Krattie

    Next stop was Krattie. The reason we came here was to see one of the worlds only fresh water dolphins. We went out to the river on a boat to see them. It was very good but I'm afraid trying to photograph them proved difficult, but you can just about see them in the picture so you get the idea.
    In the afternoon we went across to a little island 5 minutes away called Koh Trong and rented bikes so we could cycle around. We really enjoyed being away from the town and the tuk tuks and scooters. It was great to see some countryside again!    Okumaya devam et

    Phnom Phen

    After Krattie we returned to Phnom Phen. In total we spent about 2 days. We did the usual walk around the city seeing the classic independence monuments and royal palace etc. The most interesting and depressing thing we did was go to both the S1 and killing field museums. I was aware before coming to Cambodia about a civil war about 30 years ago, apparently we were both completely ignorant to the extent of the genocide that had took place during and after the civil war, after the Vietnamese war. I won't go into too much detail with the risk of it sounding like a history lesson and many of the things we saw we didn't feel right taking pictures as we our guide lived through this and had lost half of her family as a result.
    Long story short the S1 museum had been turned into a concentration camp where any person deemed to have an education was tortured usually until death because they were possibly US or Russian spies. If they didn't die there they would be transported to a 'new home' (the killing fields) where they were killed. As guns were too expensive it was usually by spade/pick axe/rough leaf or wood edge. In total 3 million people died in 5 years. Two million actively killed and another million be starvation or similar. This was over a quarter of the entire population of Cambodia.
    Very educational but not the nicest place to go. The pictures show just some of the remains they have found from the killing fields, the prison and one of the 'rooms' the victims slept in.    Okumaya devam et

    Ho Chi Minh

    Next we crossed the border into Vietnam, our first stop was Ho Chi Minh or Saigon. With more people in this city than the whole of Cambodia it was a bit of a shock going back to the urban life style and placing your life in danger every time you tried to cross a road! Apparently it's best to close you eyes and just walk, at least that way you don't see the near misses.
    We went on 2 day trips from here. One to the Mekong delta which is meant to be amazing... we were both underwhelmed. Maybe we should have gone for a 2 day tour which a lot of people were doing. We felt it was more aimed at selling us things rather than showing us the delta. The best part was getting a boat ride through the small canals of the delta which had some nice scenery.
    We also went to the Cu Chi tunnels which were used in the French/American Vietnamese war. We both found these amazing. Three floors of underground tunnels 3, 7 and 12-15 meters underground. With places for people to live and in total all the tunnels combined were over 200km in length. We got to go down into the first floor. It was hot sweaty and small, not something I would want to live in for years at a time.
    On the last day we wandered around the city itself looking at cathedrals etc, we also went to the museum dedicated to the Vietnamese war. Again apparently we are uneducated on the topic but I'm fairly sure this was a one sided view if things. However there was a lot we hadn't really appreciated before. In particular that the wars within Vietnam had lasted about 30 years non stop which included the French colonial war and the American wars which had been back to back. There is a particular anti American feel about the place. On the bright side, there are baguettes and crepes on every street corner to eat!! Susie was happy!    Okumaya devam et

    Da lat and Nha trang

    I have combined two places we visited next for reasons that will become clear. We decided to go to Da Lat mainly to do a 'secret tour' we had read about. We wanted to do this tour on Chinese New Years Day so decided to email beforehand to check that would be okay. 'Yes, no bother' was the reply. However when we got there we were told of course the tour would not be running as everything shuts down for New Years! So basically we had a day in Da Lat drinking coffee and visiting the only attraction that was open which was the flower gardens.
    We moved on the next day, it was then that we realised that Chinese New Year does not last for one day, but 10 days! And during this time most tourist attractions shut down, the rest are double the price. Buses were packed and so expensive! We visited Nha Trang next, a popular beach resort. Again, everything we tried to do was closed, and it rained so the beach was a no go. We managed to visit some mud baths which passed the time.
    So by the end of this week we were pretty fed up with Chinese New Year and there was still another 3 days to go!    Okumaya devam et

    Hoi An

    From the previous destinations we seem to have had a bit of a upsurge of fortune, or we just went to a place we really liked. We arrived in Hoi An on another night bus, these are shite in comparison to the South America busses. Bunk bed like seats with bugger all room and no on board toilet. Personally this was a issue for me having the bladder the size of a child, or a prostate problem (not sure which) I was constantly on edge. I needn't have feared though, as the bus consequently stopped what felt like every hour meaning time to sleep was restricted to a minimum.
    Anyway Hoi An, we could have spent an age here. The centre of the town was dedicated to bicycles and pedestrians only, meaning we didn't constantly feel like we were going to die! The town centre itself was very picturesque with little alley ways which were lit up by coloured chinese lanterns at night. We spent a good portion of our time here wandering the streets looking in small shops. We also went shopping!!! Hoi An is also famous for tailors! I was determined to get at least 1 suit. Turns out I got 2 and Susie an outfit as well! It was difficult to decide first where to go and what to pick with countless numbers of fabric and over 400 tailoring shops. In the end it took only 2 days to get measured up and our clothes made from scratch at a fraction of the price it would have cost at home!
    Here we also took bicycles and went around to neighbouring villages such as the vegetable village which was pretty much a giant vegetable patch for a village green. Also the pottery village where they made all sorts of ornaments out of pottery, and Susie made a rather rubbish jug (I think it was a jug anyways?)
    Lastly we went on a tour to the coconut islands where we were taken around in a bamboo boat, which was surprisingly good fun. After which we did a Vietnamese cooking class. This was also a highlight for us. Mainly because there was food, and a lot of it. It also tasted amazing so Susie has volunteered to cook you all some traditional Vietnamese food when we get back. Me being a man/child I like to burn things, so the chef let me flambé our rice pancakes. So in summary Hoi An - a definite highlight of our Vietnam road trip so far!!    Okumaya devam et

    Phong Nha

    Next we visited the national park and world UNESCO heritage centre Phong Nha. Due to the price of tours we reluctantly decided to hire a motorbike again to visit this but I'm pleased to say we enjoyed it way more this time due to the roads being much quieter.
    The scenery was lovely and we visited a couple of caves. The first cave, paradise cave was very impressive - it was over a kilometer in length. The second cave, dark cave contained a mud bath and was also where we did some zip lining, kayaking and fun water activities.    Okumaya devam et

    Halong Bay

    Another night bus and another rubbish nights sleep. I think we are done with them, we possibly have 1 more in north Thailand (hopefully not though).
    Halong bay supposedly another highlight of Vietnam, and we weren't disappointed! The bay is made up of over 1100 islands. We opted for a 3 day 2 night cruise as we felt any shorter and it would be rushed, and we were happy we did. The boat itself was brilliant in comparison to all other cruises we have done so far! The scenery was amazing. Over the two days we went kayaking, to a pearl farm and to another cave. The kayaking and just sitting on the sun deck of the boat with a beer in hand looking around were the most enjoyable parts.
    There were only 2 downsides. The first was that unfortunately people here don't seem to care where they throw their rubbish, meaning most of it ends up in the sea. Sadly it certainly scarred this amazing place. Secondly, karaoke here is like their favourite thing in the world. Being British we don't normally get involved in such things (unless a few drinks are consumed) so we don't normally mind. On a confined relatively small cruise boat hearing Vietnamese people murder every good song was not enjoyable. They may like karaoke but god they are crap at it!    Okumaya devam et

    Next we travelled to Sapa for a couple of days. Here we did a 12km trek to see stunning scenery mainly composed of rice flats. You can see from the pictures they create flat areas on the hills in order to create more space to grow rice. We also visited some communities who live in the countryside.
