  • Rules are meant to be........

    October 4, 2024 in Austria ⋅ 🌫 4 °C

Had a long day on the road. Circa 280km. Incl two passes. Liam had a field day behind the wheel. By accident did the Timmelsjoch pass in the snow at -2°C on summer wheels. Slow but all credit to Liam! Lunch was Itallian ham, bread and cheese next to the road in the company of 3 cows with bells. Cooler also did it's job with cold beer for dad. He needed a beer before and after flying down the 2nd pass. Tonight Hotel Eden next to lake Lago di Garda. Hotel with a view........Read more

  • Tuscany

    October 6, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Falling in love with Tuscany is easy! Early start to Pisa and how they kept it standing for the last 650 years beats me. Lunch on the Warrior mobile trunk. Then Viale dei Cipipressi with hundreds of Cypress trees lining the road. Coffee in Bolgheri where I had to drink Liam's cuppuccino because ordering in Italian is not a Miller thing. Then impressive San Gimigiano or Medieval Manhattan with gifts for Adelé.
Tonight is the SAC midway party at Villa Casafrassi an some Dolce Vita time.
Even the dirt road is marble...

  • Tuscany to Central Lazio

    October 7, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

The poor people! I kept saying "siestog and shame". They live in marble houses on hills with Cypress lined farm roads, olive orchards and grape vineyards. Probably a Ferrari in the garage. They have no idea how wonderful it is to live in casa common people :-)
Had Breakfast in Sienna with its beatifull cathedral Piazza del Campo a tourist hotspot indeed. Then Orvieto on top of a mountain with breathtaking views of the did I mention "siestog" Tuscans.
Lunch was again supermarket rolls with salami and cheese. Baker said they were too "bambino" for us.
Lots of bad Itallian tarred roads from there till we had enough and took the highway to Rieti and our B&B.
Met the SAC film crew at dinner tonight. Wonderfull chaps from Belgium so we spoke Afrikaans and Flemish.
The Italians have less Engliah in their arsinal the further south we travel. Google translate is a great tool.
Tomorrow we head south west past Naples (optipnal) and back to the Tyrrehnian sea.

  • Lazio to vesuvius

    October 8, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Last night in Rietti we stayed over in a Guest House on the top floor with lots of stairs. As if this was not enough we had to open and close a series (4) of doors and gates with a hand full of keys and then the same story out again. Needless to say we only went out once, and that was for dinner.
Left very early as we had a long day ahead (350km). Drove through the Lazio region with its impressive mountains, hill-top towns and windy roads. Liam had a field day again and me hanging on for dear life. The Merc did its job and many other teams had mechanical issues (still have at the time of writing). A cheap breakfast was a double epresso and Croissants in Filettino, in the Monti Simbruini national park. From there we went back down the Mountain to Geata next to the coast where we had sea food for lunch.
From Geata we steamed past Naples and did not stop for Pizza as instructed. Naples traffic is not for the faint hearted, if Liam's language is anything to go by. Home tonight is a beatiful Hotel with a view of Mont Vesuvius and Pompeii in the distance. She looks dormant and I am sure there will be no fireworks tonight.
As a side note - Liam's support, to me, during this trip is phenomenal and he really sets a high bar for any young man. He's my boy......

  • Castellammare di Stabia to Scala

    October 9, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

    What a roller coaster ride!
Hotel was wonderfull and best of the trip. Breakfast at 7:30 and we hit the road straight after. The first part from Scala past Positano to Amalfi was as they show on TV really beautiful. Also Adelé's favourite place in Italy. This first stretch of 40km took 2.5 hrs by itself due to traffic! From Amalfi we turned east towards Parco Nazionale del Cilento on the OLD SS18 road. And old it was! Some places closed, broken down rallye cars and completely closed right at the end, and another 2hr detour.
Lunch was - you guessed it, supermarket sandwiches. And some fruit... Did about 320km today and got to the hotel just as the sun set over the sea.

  • North Calabria almost to sicily

    October 10, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today was a mixed bag. Started off late compared to previous days. Headed straight for Belmonte where we had some famous Gelato, before lunch :-). Most of the road was next to the sea with stunning views from up high. Then there was also what can be described as the arm pit of Italy.
Bought some baby Heinekens, lunch was as before and ended the day in a lovely hotel next to the strait of Messina. Tomorrow after breakfast we will take the ferry to Sicily and head for the finish line.

  • The finale

    October 10, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Well, best hotel of the trip was a honeymoon suite. I have no idea how, but me and Liam ended up in a room with a glass shower which is a story in itself......
Had "not so round" pizza for dinner.
Late breakfast and a short drive to the ferry that took us to Sicily (Messina). Because we had a late start we never got around to see Mount Edna from up close. Other teams noted that she was glowing and smoking all night. Something for the next Sicily visit.
We noted a marked difference in the car driver's use of indicators in Sicilly. As all Italians (yes I am generalising), they never use them for indicating a left or right turn. But on the highway they tend to indicate a lane change and then leave the blinker on for miles. General Italian style of driving will never work in Germany!
Ended up waiting (at a beach bar) for the requested arrival time to the finish line. Stunning weather all day and it was great to get a good dose of vitamin D before heading back home.
Waited till 9pm and then started the long trek home. Boarded a ferry for Genoa from Palermo at 23:59 to arrive the next day at 19:00. Then a 9hr drive back to Münster.
    Wanted to take the time:

to thank Liam for his support throughout the rallye. You really are an astute gentleman. Remember 100% responsible.....

All our supporters and your generous donations to DMSG. I am sure the money will be well spent to support people and families living with multiple sclerosis. Too early to calculate but it looks like €500 total donations. I hope....

Thank you Adelé for holding the fort at Casa Miller. You really are a GEM! And we love you so much.

The Italian people for allowing us to explore your beautifully rich and historic country.

Superlative Adventure Club for arranging a memorable rallye. Your care and pinpoint planning was exceptional. PS thanks for the medals :-)

Well done Find Penguins Tobias for a fine and suited app ;-)

The other 119 teams. Hoping you got home safe.
