  • We have arrived

    January 17 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Left Mūnster at 6pm for the airport, Liam, Clemens and James. Then Jaco suprised us at the airport lounge. Bugger! I was the only one not to know about this. Love it!
Charlto joined Louis in Luanda the day before. Bugger No2!
Long 8+hr flight to Luanda got us to a very expensive VISA experience. Note to self - never apply for an eVISA. It is not required.
Rui and co collected the now team of 6 Tarpon hunters from the new NBJ aitport. Then a 4+hr drive to Camp Yeru. Police on the way, but no probs.
Crossed the Kwanza and Rio Longa rivers and was welcomed to Camp Yetu by Spyker and Marina Kruger, and Zander and Nadine Kruger and the 4 grand kids. Few beers, lunch, fisherman stories and prep for the afternoon hunting. Took the 2 boats to the river mouth.
Louis was into two very short lived fights with Tarpon and then nothing else for the afternoon. Bad day for me as the MS balance had the better of me after the long travel. Tomorrow is another day......

  • Day 3 frustrated

    January 21 in Angola ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Off this morning after reakfast. Tarpon everywhere but no hungry ones. At least 6 rods in the water all the time but no luck. Very frustrating indeed
Oh did I mention Clemens caught a shell. And Liam looks like Rudolph from the sunburn.
Kept our heads up and ended the eve with a good meal. Tomorrow early doors.....

  • Day 4 - Desperation to success

    January 22 in Angola ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Frustration turned to desperation with Liam and Clemens catching crabs for bait. Liam caught a bird by accident whom was happy to fly off after the incident.
And then success for Jaco. A nice 1+m Tarpon for Jaco on fly!!!
Clemens had a massive Angolan Dagwood for lunch.
We celebrated Jaco's catch with a few Rums. Bliss.....
Louis was also awarded with a Camp Yetu certificate for his Grunter of day 2 in the camp record books.
Earlyish eve and the overall mood is much better in the group.

  • Day 5 - Mixed bag

    January 23 in Angola ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Good morning and afternoon sessions though no fish for me. Charlto hooked into a 13kg Corvina in the morning session which we had for dinner.
Fished the northern bank today but the Tarpon had other priorities. Did what I could but no luck.
Tomorrow we go again. Maybe the evening rain changes things......

  • Day 2 - Excited

    January 24 in Angola ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Not a good day fishing for all, though Louis caught a new lodge record Grunter on fly and Liam caught a Baraccuda.
All got sun burnt and Clemens and Liam needed some TLC with natural Allow from Marina.
Pork Chops for dinner and hit bed.

  • Day 6 - The Atlantic ocean gives

    January 25 in Angola ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Morning session was not good as always! Got a serious suntan.
Afternoon saw Liam with a good Baraccuda and then Clemens landing a Tarpon As HIS FIRST EVER fish caught. I was sight casting to Tarpon to no avail.
Celebrated both fish in the evening at dinner.
I decided to not go out in the morning to save my energy. I will be out in the afternoon.

  • Day 7 - Big fish

    January 26 in Angola ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Big Snapper in the morning for Liam and a massive Corvina for Louis late afternoon. Liam the Baraccuda slayer continued all day.
In general fishing was not good at all, bar the few fish that did come out. Luck of the draw I guess.Read more

  • Day 8 - Early doors and bliss

    January 26 in Angola ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Went out at 6am just after sunrise. No luck apart from Liam the Baraccuda man.
Biggest epidemic of fish fever I ever saw. Tarpon all over in the river mouth. Everyone casting at them to no avail.
Afternoon session I really enjoyed. Had my good friend Johnny the chair as company. Wonderful fly casting conditions but no Tarpon around. Loved it!
Louis hooked into a bus that first took all his line and then broke off. He was rattled. Tomorrow is another day......

  • Day 9 - Last day fishing

    January 27 in Angola ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Set off after breakfast into a windless scorcher on the beach after exchanging goodbyes with Louis and Charlto.
No action in the morning although Liam was chest deep in the surf till 11am. He really set his mind to it.
I went back to the river mouth and cast a few flies to seemingly nothing.
Went back late afternoon and both Liam and Jaco got stuck into two nice Corvinas just as the sun set. They were pissed off to leave the beach shortly after. Beach patrol only allows 6:00-18:00 fishing. Stole an hour anyway and left after dark at around 19:00. Me and my trusted friend Johnny stayed at the river mouth and cast more flies at a Tarpon-less river.

  • Day 10 - Last day/words

    January 29 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 0 °C

Because we had to leave for the Airport at 15:00 and still needed to pack, Only Liam and Clemens went out in the morning. It was by now evident that the sea was not in a "giving" mode in the morning so L&C came back empty handed.
Packed, had lunch and a quick nap and waited for Junior the driver and his Toyota Fortuner. Said our goodbyes to the Kruger and extended family. Everytging did not "keep going well for the Toyota" in the 4.5hr drive to the Airport with the first gear not operational. Pit stop to check the oil levels and carried on. Made it in time for check-in and boarded at 10pm.
All in all I really enjoyed the time at Camp Yetu, aka "Fokkolgevangdam" for me, with good friends and family.

I set out to realize a life dream in catching a Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus) on Fly. Maybe I raised the bar too high all those years ago when created this dream, read every available piece of literature, history and scientific books on Tarpon. I realized that one should chase your dream sooner rather than later. DO IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN! They say MS is not a handicap per-say. I wish I did it sooner........ J
