• We Have Arrived in Sydney

    14 dicembre 2023, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

    Welcome to Sydney, Australia!

UA 101 landed at SYD 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

Since we qualified for using the Smart Gates to enter the country, after deplaning we quickly went through the two-step DIY process that included scanning our passports, receiving a pass, and going through a biometric-verification gate.

The only time we saw Border Forces Agents was when they collected our entry passes and customs forms (completed on the plane) at the “nothing to declare” gate after we collected our bags.

Then it was just a matter of ordering an Uber to take us to the AirBNB apartment in The Rocks … our home away from home for a week.

We’ll refresh ourselves and then head out to do some grocery shopping.

The plan is to stay active so that we can start adjusting to the 18-hour time difference. What we will actually do is still TBD.

  • Less Than 2 Hours to Go to SYD

    14 dicembre 2023, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

Well the flight wasn’t nearly as bad as I dreaded. No doubt due to the comfort of being in a Polaris business class cabin.

    Here’s a quick sum up.

On time departure from Houston at 8:25a on the 12th … flight duration estimated as 17 hours by the cockpit crew.

Drinks and warm nuts as soon as we were leveled off at altitude.

Dinner service soon after … really quite delicious.

A couple of movies to entertain ourselves.

Wi-fi … pretty good speed for social media, email, and internet browsing … free thanks to UA’s partnership with T-Mobile, our carrier.

Time to catch some zzz’s … made all the more comfortable due to the Polaris PJs we were given upon request.

Lost 13 December somewhere over the Pacific while we were sleeping … thanks to the vagaries of the International Date Line.

Up and at ‘em after about 5 hours of zzz’s … with about 5.5 hours to go to reach SYD.

Another movie … some writing … some photo processing.

Now, with less than two hours to go, getting ready for the breakfast service.

More when we get to Australia.

  • Whiling Away the Layover @ IAH

    12 dicembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 64 °F

Since we are flying to Australia on an aircraft that has a Polaris business class cabin, we have access to a decent lounge to while away the hours at IAH before we embark our flight tonight.

While it is nothing like the amazing THY Business Lounge in İstanbul, the Polaris Lounge at IAH is head and shoulders above regular UA Clubs. Thus, it is no hardship to spend our time here.

On arrival, we first wandered around the lounge to get the lay of the land. Since the lounge was all but deserted, we felt no compunction about leaving our carry-on bags in a couple of cozy cubbies before heading to the dining room … a very nice alternative to the buffet set up near the bar.

Must say that the food was quite good. I had read that the Polaris Signature Burger was the thing to order, so that’s what we did … with Mui supplementing it with a kale salad from the small plates section of the menu. A glass of Zin for me … a Merlot for Mui. We wrapped up with dessert … a warm chocolate chip cookie a la mode for Mui; a bananas foster mini cake for me. His was the better choice.

Tummies sated, we settled into our cubbies to while away the rest of our time at IAH. For me, that means writing and reading … and processing photos. The armchair in the cubby is a bit big for a shortie like me, but I’ve managed to make myself comfy enough. Mui went off for a bit to make use of one of the two daybeds in the quiet area … available in 45-minute increments … just long enough to catch a few 💤.

We’re settled in for what we expect will be a relaxing and uneventful afternoon … and evening. I’ll be back if something newsworthy pops up.

In the meantime, I am going to go take a stroll down the concourse of Terminal E. From what I glimpsed on our way to the lounge earlier today, the renovations that were ongoing the last time we were here are completed … and it looks much nicer than it used to be.

    Ciao for now.

  • Arrived @ IAH

    12 dicembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 61 °F

An uneventful flight brought us to IAH. Bonus … we were 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

Our aircraft pulled up to Terminal B and we deplaned via a ramp that was brought to the plane for our convenience.

The beauty of being familiar with an airport is that you know how to get from one point to another. In our case, a short stroll and a short ride on the skyway was all that we needed to get where we needed to go in Terminal E.

Now to while away the time until our 8:25p departure to SYD.

  • Aboard UA 5325 to IAH

    12 dicembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 32 °F

I don’t remember the taxi to the runway being so long at COS. It is a small airport after all. On the other hand, COS shares the runway with Peterson Space Force Base, so perhaps it makes sense.

In any event, we were in the air by 8:00a … soaring smoothly above Peterson and the surrounding neighborhoods … with clear views of Pikes Peak — our local 14er — before turning south for the flight to Houston, Texas.

We are 30 minutes into the flight. The UA app tells me that we will be arriving in 1 hour and 27 minutes. That would put us at IAH 20 minutes ahead of schedule … despite our delay departing COS by the same number of minutes.

UA5325 is aboard a Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ700) operated by SkyWest Airlines. Our seats in the domestic first cabin are comfy enough … we opted for the single seats on the port side, so Mui’s sitting behind me. There’s only a snack and beverage service since the flight is so short . Typical.

See you on the ground at IAH.

  • We Start at COS

    12 dicembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 27 °F

An early flight — 7:40a departure — means an early wake up alarm. Luckily, we are early birds anyway.

The 30-minute drive to COS was a cinch. The Avis rep met us as we were parking the rental, collected the key, and sent us on our way to the terminal.

I had already completed the “travel ready” requirements in the UA app and checked us in for both flights, so we quickly dropped off our bags and went thru the TSA Pre✔️ line in a jiffy.

The bonus for today … learning that the domestic first boarding passes for our UA flight give us access to the Priority Lounge.

Sipping tea and relaxing in a comfy chair as I write this footprint.

Twenty five minutes to boarding the flight to IAH.

  • And We Are Off to Australia

    11 dicembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 45 °F

Or we will be soon enough.

Tomorrow morning, with a flight from COS to IAH, we will begin our long travel day — or should that be days? We depart on 12 December … lose 13 December to the IDL … and arrive in Australia on 14 December.

The map I’ve appended to this footprint shows a “very” general overview of our Australia adventure. It’s a bit more convoluted than we’d hope it would be … mainly because we had to work around availability for some of the things we really wanted to do … such as the rail journeys.

No worries, though. We’ve got the basic logistics in place … the rest we will wing.

(If you want a sneak peek at some of what we have planned for our “by ship … car … plane … RV … train … ferry” adventure, you can go back and read through the snippets I’ve already uploaded. Oh, and there will be plenty of “on foot” doings as well.)

  • Weather Forecast Looking Good

    9 dicembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 32 °F

Our last couple of winter trip departures fell victim to the vagaries of Mother Nature ... to the extent that we had to make last-minute changes to our departure plans. Thus, we've been keeping a close eye on the forecast.

Since returning home from Europe on 15 November, we've had several snow events. The most recent of which was a storm that came through last night. No worries. The sun is already out and the white stuff is starting to disappear. With temperatures expected to be above freezing the next few days, the snow will be gone in no time.

The 7-day forecast is looking good. The earliest precip is forecasted for the day after we leave … the 13th ... a non-day for us since we will be losing it to the IDL on our way to Sydney.

We'll keep monitoring the weather, but it looks like Mother Nature is going to cooperate with our plans this time.

  • Choosing Meals

    8 dicembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 34 °F

    Well, that's a first!

Not in the sense that airline passengers have not always had the option to choose a special meal. They have. But the email we received last night from United Airlines [UA] asked if we wanted to pre-select our dinner for the IAH-SYD flight ... from a list of specific dishes.

We both opted for the shrimp.

We are not locked into our choices, though. The email confirming our selections said we could always change our minds after we are onboard. Who knows? We might even opt to go directly to sleep!

Online check-in for AusPan opened today. It took all of 10 minutes to complete the required information and watch the safety video. Easy Peasy.

Also received the final documents for the cruise. The itinerary shows some minor changes to our times in port. Gained an hour here … lost a half hour there. Nothing that will impact our plans ashore.

Time to embarkation is now 21 days and counting.

  • Squeezed in Uluru-Kata Tjuta

    25 novembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 27 °F

The addition came at the cost of losing the Bungle-Bungles of Kimberley, but Uluru — the iconic landmark of the Anangu — is now on the itinerary.

Our flights from Sydney to Yulara, the service village outside the national park, and back to Sydney are booked. As are our accommodations at the Ayers Rock Resort.

We are giving ourselves three full days to explore not just Uluru, but also Kata Tjuta National Park, “… a living cultural landscape where earth and memories exist as one.” Uluru is, in fact, part of the national park, and though it seems to overshadow everything else in the minds of most visitors, there is plenty more to see and experience within the park.

Next up, we need to look at the tour and activity options. And also purchase a park pass. I’ll do so over the next few days.

Oh, and of course, I need to make sure we pack our hat nets … we’re going to need them to keep the pesky flies off our face! Fingers crossed they are not as bad as they can be during the hot Australian summer.

  • KI Getaway

    23 novembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☁️ 39 °F

Kangaroo Island — KI as the locals refer to it — is one of the ports of call on our AusPan itinerary. Not sure if we’ll make it ashore, however, as it is a tender port that gets canceled more often than not.

The island has more to see and explore than one can reasonably do in one day anyway. So, we added KI to our itinerary as a getaway during our overland trip.

The only way to get to Kangaroo Island is by ferry from Cape Jervis.

The only way to get to Cape Jervis from Adelaide, where we detrain from The Ghan, is by car … because the bus service seems to be limited to once a day. But, even if that were not the case, having our own wheels will give us not only flexibility along the way, but we will also have our own wheels to explore the island.

And of course, once we get to KI, we need a place to stay.

    Ferry booking …✔️
    Car rental booking …✔️
    Accommodations booking …✔️

Looks like we’re ready for KI!

Another mode of travel — a car ferry — has now been added to our overland trip.

  • Final Itinerary

    16 novembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

As you've already read in the footprints, we had a number of itinerary changes on our 26-Day Ancient Empires & Spanish Farewell cruise aboard Oosterdam.

Some of these were self-induced ... we opted to board in İstanbul, Türkiye instead of Piraeus (Athens), Greece.

Others happened well before the cruise set sail... lost Sete, France ... but gained an overnight in Barcelona, Spain.

The more serious changes that resulted in the loss of five ports — and the gain of two ports — happened during the cruise ... all weather-related. Our losses were Kotor, Montenegro; Cartagena & Cadiz, Spain; Lisbon & Funchal, Portugal. Our gains were both in the Canaries ... Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The most important thing in travel is to go with the flow. So, that's what we did. Yes, we were disappointed with the loss of so many ports, but we took it in stride ... and enjoyed the ports that we did visit, and the eight-day crossing back to the USA.

  • Aboard UA 696 to Denver

    15 novembre 2023, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

With a late afternoon flight back to Colorado, we were in no hurry to rush off Oosterdam when disembarkation began around 7:00a. Having selected the last disembarkation group color — Gray 2 — we waited in our cabin in comfort until we heard our group called just before 9:00a.

One of the worst parts of disembarking a ship with nearly 2,000 passengers is the long lines to go through immigration. Well, today the lines moved at a steady pace, so it wasn’t bad. No wait at the taxi line either.

By 10:00a, we were at FLL looking to check our bags. Not so fast. Apparently, bags can only be checked within four hours of the scheduled departure time. Oh well … we found a quiet spot in baggage claim of all places and whiled away the time until the magic hour.

Once the bags were checked, things were back on track again. No wait at the security checkpoint. Seats available in the otherwise crowded United Club Lounge. On time boarding and departure of UA 696 to Denver.

It’s been an uneventful flight thus far … a little turbulence notwithstanding. I even netted some complimentary miles on my MileagePlus account because the entertainment system at my seat is not functioning. I have my iPad and we have wi-fi for social media, so no problem passing the hours.

Another hour to go and we should be landing in Denver.

(Yay! I even got to post this footprint while we’re still on our way to Denver.)

A change in the weather today!

Overcast and drizzly … a bit of humidity … warm. But the lack of sunshine made it possible for me to sit on the veranda for most of the day. Oosterdam went through a rain squall or two, but it wasn’t an issue on the protected veranda

The light became brighter around 11:00a. The sun tried to break through, but the cloud cover won the battle. By mid-afternoon, however, the situation was reversed and the sun was out. But our heading was such that, the sun didn’t quite make it onto the veranda.

Between his art ventures today, Mui began packing. We’re testing out a new way of packing, which we hope will make accessing clothes while on the road in Australia easier.

Mui’s Guided Painting on Canvas Session this afternoon — the theme was “looking down on a beach from the top of a cliff” — went a bit long. Nonetheless, we had our wine on the veranda before having dinner at the Lido Market tonight.

    Lake Atlantic Ocean!

That is how captain Rens described today’s sea state when he came on the P/A at noon for his daily announcement. Indeed, the Atlantic was flat calm today … at least until mid afternoon. What little motion of the ocean we’ve been experiencing since about 2:30p is really not worth mentioning, so I will simply move on.

Not that there is much to move onto. I suppose I could mention that we are now in the three digits — distance-wise — in our quest to reach the USA … and have approximately two full days in which to cover that distance.

We’re past the halfway point back to the USA!

That’s what Captain Rens said when he gave his daily navigation report at noon. Of course, we’ve still got a distance to go, but the countdown is in earnest now.

Mui stopped in at the Mainstage this morning for the Veterans Day Ceremony. He stayed long enough to see the flowers laid at the base of the podium and listen to a song performed by Cantaré. Then he had to run off to his adult coloring class. Not sure what else the ceremony entailed, but he said it was standing-room-only when he left.

Tonight we dined with some fellow-passengers from Türkiye. We met Levent, Belgin, and Melissa when we embarked in İstanbul on 21 October … they are making a permanent move back to the US … at least until their daughter graduates from University. We met Atilla & Füsun yesterday. They are on their way to South America to meet up with their son, and then they will continue to Cusco, Peru where they will stay for a while. We had a pleasant evening with plenty of conversation and laughter.

    10 novembre 2023, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ 🌙 79 °F

    Routine. Routine. Routine.

I suppose the only thing to write about is that in addition to going to the Coloring for Adults session, Mui paid the surcharge — $25 — to go to the Guided Painting on Canvas session today. The result? An impressionistic painting of water lilies. He did pretty good … and best of all, had fun.

By the way, one of the great things about a westbound TransAtlantic is that we keep falling back where time is concerned. That means that some of our days are 25 hours long. We were at GMT +2 when we boarded Oosterdam in İstanbul on 21 October. We are now at GMT -2 … with several more hours to gain before it is all said and done.

  • Atlantic Crossing: Day 3

    9 novembre 2023, North Atlantic Ocean ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

    We broke down today!

I don’t mean that in the technical sense. The ship is sailing just fine … at an average speed that will get us to Ft Lauderdale as planned on 15 November.

Rather, Mui and I broke down and purchased a one-device internet package that we will share for the remainder of the crossing. We paid for the package with the adjustments credited to our account for the taxes and fees due us for the port cancelations. No hit to the wallet is a good thing 😊

I do have something out-of-routine to write about. Tonight was our dinner at the Pinnacle Grill. It is one of the restaurants on the ship that has a surcharge. Our reservation was compliments of Guest Services … for the compressor noise we’re having to endure from the mechanical room across the hall from us.

We were seated at a two-top wanna-be in a niche. What I mean by that is that our table was barely separated from the two-tops on either side. No matter, we chatted with the others between courses, which helped pass the time.

The food was excellent … but there was way too much of it. Our appetizers — crab cakes for me and stuffed mushroom caps for Mui … with an order of “clothesline candied bacon” to share — were more the size of an entree we thought. That we shared the bacon, with its interesting presentation, didn’t really make a difference to the fact that I could eat barely half of the baked Alaskan halibut that I ordered as that too was a large portion. As for the size of the dessert orders … well, Mui’s key lime pie was a reasonably sized portion; my “not-so-classic baked Alaska,” on the other hand, could have easily fed four people IMHO.

Good thing I have some writing to do as it will be a while before I have digested the food and can go to bed.

  • Atlantic Crossing: Day 2

8 novembre 2023, North Atlantic Ocean

    Routine. Routine. Routine.

That means that we’re not doing anything that is footprint-worthy. No complaints on our part, however. We have several months ahead of us that promise to be really busy, so we’re looking forward to some enforced R&R at sea.

Nonetheless, I am going to post footprints for each day of the crossing so that I don’t leave the blog somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

By the way … we received disembarkation options today. Unlike other cruise lines we’ve sailed recently, HAL allows passengers to choose their own debarkation time … within reason. We opted for Gray 2 … the last group. Looks like everyone will be off by 9:00a regardless … unless US Customs and Immigration calls a halt to the process … as happened in Miami at the end of our Celebrity crossing last year.
