Today we set off from Heathrow to Madrid after a very challenging car journey , horrendous rain all the way .
Good flight with Iberia .
We successfully negotiated the Madrid metro and found our apartment which is very close to the Palacio.
Had a nice meal tonight in a local restaurant where they had a good range of tapas and some delicious jamon . Early night for us after a brief walk to see the sun setting !Read more

This morning we visted two places of interest right on our doorstep. The Temple of Debod( given to the Spanish people by Egypt) and a very interesting and opulent house called Museo Cerraibo
Then we headed down to meet our guide , went into Plaza Mayor and then on to a full tour of the Royal Palace . Incredibly opulent and interesting.
After a mini siesta we set off on our evening tapas tour with our guide Daniel . Met some nice people and sampled a variety of tapas in some very old and established tapas bars. Also tried Spanish vermouth at 17% proof ( thank goodness we only had one of those ) and a very flat cider which again is a Spanish specialty and also had very nice tinto verano.Read more

April 25 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C
Started the day by heading to Cathedral , could only go part way in as service about to start . Then headed to a convent, where nuns sell biscuits , you put money on rotating cupboard and the biscuits miraculously arrive .
Then headed down to the Reina Sophia art gallery . There we saw Picasso’s Guernica and also some Dali and Miro.
Had a walk around the Tropical Gardens but not much out in colour yet. Hot day so nice to get some shade .
For late lunch we had Churros and chocolate.
Another siesta and then off to a well known local restaurant. Wendy tried the local cocido, their specialty ,which had some suspect meat / offal and I had a whole leg of lamb, needless to say another walk was required before bed, when most of Madrid seemed to be out promenading too.Read more

Headed off to Retiro Park today - lovely park with lots of nice areas . Saw the lake , rose garden and beautiful avenues of horse chestnut. Sadly the garden with the peacocks was closed but still saw them through the railings . We then went to the rooftop of the Circulo De Belle Artes. Great views of Madrid and a cheeky refreshment was had . Went to a local quirky restaurant tonight .Read more

Slightly later start this morning . The Madrid marathon taking place .
Went to the Palacio Liria. Owned by wealthy Spanish aristocracy and beautifully furnished . Had an exhibition inside too by Joana Vasconcelos- unusual but very talented .
We then headed over to Mercado de San Miguel for tapas lunch and then a mini rest before a walk around the gardens south of the palace . This evening we managed to get a table at the trendy Radio bar on top of the Melia hotel - a lovely way to finish the dayRead more

No photos today . Got train to Toledo in anticipation of a lovely afternoon wondering around the city. The major power cut meant little we could do !

Today we properly investigated Toledo. Starting with a visit to the cathedral, a little bit of retail therapy and the open top bus ride around the outskirts of the city giving great views . On the square in front of the cathedral a very unusual piece of modern art that resembles an open sewer- most odd . Everything seems back to normal . Found a nice restaurant for our last dinner .Read more

Day 8 Homeward Bound
April 30 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C
Got an early taxi from our duplex in the Jewish Quarter ( which was very nice & incredibly good value) and then train from Toledo into Atocha in Madrid . Really chilly day . Station at Toledo very ornate . Wendy discovered the direct bus from the station to airport which was quick and only cost us €5 each . Nice time in the Iberia lounge and an on time flight into Heathrow !Read more
