    1. elokuuta 2019, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Today I've been to the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. While most tourists have apparently never seen a crooked chair before, I stumbled into a less crowded room and got to see 42 paintings for the price of one. Oh, and I spotted how every Geography teacher should dress for lessons on cartography.Lue lisää

Instead of spending £50 on a guided tour, I grabbed my Oyster card and started walking into random directions. There's always something to see, although many attractions concealed themselves from the hundreds of cameras pointed at them. But as unfortunate as all the construction may be, it also fuels the city's development, ultimately pleasing the eager eye with a mixture of Old and New.Lue lisää

If you ever want to be one with the past, feel mystic energies flowing through your veins, and experience an untouched wonder... then you should probably not go to a place that one million people visit each year. Despite the fact that I got the impression of being driven around Stonehenge as if the tourists were cattle, I enjoyed the day trip and got some photos to share. Plus, I learned that the place had multiple phases with different constructions.Lue lisää

    8. elokuuta 2019, Wales ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Don't worry, I won't try to write anything but the name of Wales' capital in Welsh. Instead, I offer some impressions of the Cardiff Castle, the Cardiff Bay area, the Cardiff Market, and the National Museum as well as the Millennium / Principality Stadium. (It does look like a ship, doesn't it?) Also, huge thanks to the two cyclists Geoff and Jeff with whom I had a lovely chat on the jetty. I also met Stewart and John, twice, who introduced me to all possible conspiracy theories (and somehow still allowed me to take their picture, which I will not put in this gallery of course).Lue lisää

  • All kinds of art.

    11. elokuuta 2019, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

My time in the unexpectedly compact city of Liverpool can be described as a wild mixture of all things artsy. I came across several murals as well as contemporary art in the Tate, before I experienced my first ever comedy show in the Hot Water Comedy Club right next to my hostel. It was amazing, but the history Liverpool has with Germany led to quite some banter with the host when he involved me in his warm-up bits. Luckily I was allowed to stay and had a blast! All five comics were great and the 100+ attendees rewarded them with lots of positivity and cheers. On a final note, I celebrated National S'mores Day despite not yet being in the United States, and discovered my new favorite sweet.Lue lisää

  • Oh, the festivity!

    14. elokuuta 2019, Skotlanti ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

The bus ride to Edinburgh took nine hours, which is about the amount sleep I got throughout my three nights at the snoring-infested hostel room. But the capital of Scotland was restless itself as the monthlong Fringe Festival lured so many tourists onto the streets that even the sidewalks became congested. Still, my visit to Edinburgh came with two highlights: The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and hillwalking up to Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park. This needed to be celebrated with some fine Scottish cuisine: a deep-fried Mars bar!Lue lisää

  • Beautiful Northern Ireland.

    17. elokuuta 2019, Pohjois-Irlanti ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

I was not prepared for the constant and often very quick weather changes in Northern Ireland. Not only did I get completely drenched twice during the Giant's Causeway day trip, I also caught a cold. So you better value these pictures here after all I've been through... But in all seriousness, the Giant's Causeway was amazing! The other stops of the tour, e.g. Dunluce Castle or the Old Bushmills Distillery, did not find much attention due to my clothes' undesirable state of wetness. The next day, my guest family took me to see Castle Coole as well as the Marble Arch Caves in the southern parts of the country.Lue lisää

    21. elokuuta 2019, Irlanti ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

I've got five minutes until boarding starts for my flight to Toronto, so let's make this a quick one. I didn't spend much time in Dublin and because I still have the Scottish cold, I didn't go sightseeing a lot. Most pictures here are from the Trinity College Campus where I got a room for the two nights. Huge thanks to Nancy and Elisa who decided to stay a week in Dublin (hopefully experiencing more of the city than I could) and tolerated me for a lovely dinner and breakfast!Lue lisää

  • Canadaargh where am I?

    21. elokuuta 2019, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Due to heavy winds over the Atlantic the plane had to divert to Greenland so it can refuel. So.. hello from Greenland?
Edit: Apparently we are *not* in Greenland. We landed in Canada, though not where we wanted to be. Also, I don't know how much using mobile data is costing now that I am in Northern America. So.. offline now!Lue lisää

  • To Toronto!

    25. elokuuta 2019, Kanada ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

An exhausting flight brought me to Toronto, Canada -- the first location of many on the Northern American continent throughout this journey. I was immediately struck by all the skyscrapers when the bus dropped me off somewhere in the city and had to adjust to the sudden shift in urban landscape first. After all, I enjoyed my stay here and can't wait for the upcoming cities to impress me even more!Lue lisää

    28. elokuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

My first of many stops in the US brought me to Washington DC. The peaceful walk across the National Mall turned violent when I noticed that I am trying to traverse a city built for cars on foot. I decided to watch a movie in 4DX (and don't want to return to the normal cinema experience ever again), use two days to explore the major sights, and thereby save my strength. Luckily, I was also able to do some research for my State Exam thesis already, i.e. representations of the U.S. Territories such as Guam.Lue lisää

I have crossed the halfway mark of this journey! Right now I am sitting at my hotel's rooftop bar in New York City and watch as the skyline slowly embraces the night.

  • I see NYC.

    1. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

I did not get to spend much time in New York City, but it was enough to take two expensive sightseeing tours and make the best out of the even more expensive hotel. (The three nights here equate to a sixth of my entire accommodation budget for over 60 nights!) In true Paul fashion, I dedicated one day to the New York Public Library. There I worked my way through 12 books over the course of 5.5 hours, ending up with 555 pages I can take back home for my State Exam thesis. But I am taking so much more with me, and it will only get more throughout the second half of my journey!Lue lisää

  • Weird Austin.

    5. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

I visited the way too hot Austin for a few days as it is probably the city I know the most about. Following a local production company called Rooster Teeth for many years, I recognized all the streets, sights, restaurants, and oddities as if I had been here before. Also, I didn't plan on doing so, but I actually got to visit Rooster Teeth and be part of the live audience of my favorite comedy show called On The Spot. Definitely a highlight! As the "blueberry in the tomato soup", Austin defies the conservative Texan stereotypes. To do my part for "Keep Austin Weird", I didn't edit any of the photos for today's footprint. Or maybe I am just in a rush to get to the airport? We will never know.Lue lisää

  • Le et la à L.A.

    9. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

I shared my hostel room in Downtown Los Angeles with some French guys and a Russian, so the conversations became pretty multilingual. On Saturday, I took an extensive guided tour to the highlights of L.A. on which most of these photos were taken. (No chance to go sightseeing on foot!) We started with a panoramic view from Griffith Observatory, went to the Hollywood Sign and some murals, the Walk of Fame, Beverly Hills, and Venice. The tour ended at Venice Beach and Santa Monica. The last photo is the view from my room at sunset; DTLA itself is rather uneventful on its own. Every once in a while, you can spot some film productions, but that's it. Better get a hotel near the beach next time (it's a one hour drive with the metro from here!), but I still have some ocean ahead of me on my trip, so I don't think that I missed out on something.Lue lisää

  • Paradise, Nevada.

    12. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Sin City, City of Lights, Las Vegas, call it what you want: The place where everything goes (out of your pocket) and everything stays (in the casinos' pocket) is actually Paradise. (It really is. Look it up!) Despite understanding the principles of this spectacular machinery, I had to come back after briefly visiting in the summer of 2018 with the Geography excursion. (Yes, I tried my luck on the tables. And no, I did not win anything...) As it turned out, this year's excursion ended in Las Vegas at the same time I was there. Thankfully I could join them on their trip to the Valley of Fire State Park. The pictures can barely grasp the fantastic landscapes and the excitement I felt to be a part of this. After some hiking, the students went back to Vegas for their final day of the excursion while I joined my professor on a special mission for two more hours. Without a doubt, one of this journey's highlights!Lue lisää

  • Settle in Seattle.

    14. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

I have spent less than 48 hours in Seattle, and I honestly wish it would have been more. My stay in the hilly north (with a great view on the downtown area) started with seeing Zedd at the WaMu Theater. The show was amazing and my ears were ringing the entire next day. Somehow I managed to book my journey in a way that this was the only concert of an artist I knew. After a good night's sleep, I explored the city for a while, bought a jacket for Alaska, spontaneously went to see a movie, rode the Monorail to the Space Needle and headed back to the airbnb to get some rest before the early flight to Anchorage.Lue lisää

    18. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌧 11 °C

I had a fantastic time in Anchorage and wish I could have been here longer. I had a luxurious airbnb suite at the coast with a lovely view. Never thought I would enjoy the sea that much. One day, I took part in a tour through the Far North Bicentennial Park on a fatbike. The oversized tires let us move through the terrain easily. While we did not encounter any bears, we stopped twice for moose, keeping our distance for careful observation. I also enjoyed some fresh seafood which was quite a delight and a welcome change to the otherwise less nourishing US-American cuisine.Lue lisää

  • Aloha O'ahu.

    24. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

My stop in the middle of the Pacific was the longest one of this journey. Too bad, because my hostel room's air conditioning unit was broken. As I had no interest in sleeping in a sauna for a week, I switched to a hotel after the first night. And these are expensive... Despite using up my emergency budget to pay for the way better accommodation, I still got to enjoy the island of O'ahu a fair bit. I'm not a beach person, so I went to the University (twice), visited the Zoo, and became a Zoo exhibit myself when I got into a cage to swim with sharks. Without a doubt one of my most memorable experiences of this journey!Lue lisää

  • Pleasant San Francisco.

    29. syyskuuta 2019, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

It is the last day of my journey. I have spent most of the last stop's time in the suburb-ish city of Pleasanton to get some rest, but I have been to San Francisco as well. There I mostly walked around Chinatown, explored the Museum of Modern Art, and went to see a movie. One evening in Pleasanton, I got to go to the Homecoming Football game. That was one of the weirdest events in the last two months as I only ever knew such things from the movies and did not expect them to be just like that. But well, now I've got a bit more than an hour to get ready to head to the airport. The last 24 hours of my trip will be solely spent in airports and airplanes.

Thank you!
