    Porto... hustle and bustle!

    Unfortunately Friday is here to put an end to this wonderful week. This is now time to visit Porto, the capital of the north of Portugal. Mostly known because of Port Wine caves and its picturesque houses along the Douro river, it is also a place for riverboat cruises and “azulejos”. It is famous among tourists all over the world and the complete tour should be done by walking on the highest platform of Ponte D. Luís.
    In the afternoon we headed to the Discoveries Museum, where students could understand better the importance of Portuguese sailors for the shape of today’s world. There is even a boat tour throughout the Portuguese discoveries!     Czytaj więcej

    Back to Vieira - Theatre Club

    Thursday starts again at school. It is finally time to use the scenery prepared in the workshop and watch the students from the theatre club performing on stage the short theatre play they prepared about the project. It included in the plot the partner countries, as well as the clubs it involves - photography, environment, ITC and robotics. It was dramatic the way they presented the problem of pollution affecting the water reservoirs around the planet. They also proved that together world nations can solve the problems if they get united. Afterwards students could learn how to prepare masks. They could be creative and use the materials given for the purpose.
    In the afternoon the vocational students prepared a cooking workshop for baking biscuits, fruit skewers and “pastel de nata” - traditional custard pie. So, our certificate ceremony included an afternoon snack prepared by the students involved in the project.     Czytaj więcej

    Braga and Guimarães

    From Vieira to Braga are around 30kms. This is a city whose foundation is roman, went through changes till it got the medieval look and is nowadays a touristic city. The highlight is now Bom Jesus, a UNESCO site on the hill, facing the city with a stunning view.
    From here, on this Wednesday afternoon, it was time to visit Guimarães - the Cradle of Portugal. This is another UNESCO site that depicts the way of living in medieval times. It is a place for a bit of open air history in a compact city centre full of battles and conquers.     Czytaj więcej

    Still Vieira for Theatre and Caniçada

    Tuesday was ready for the theatre club activities and the ETC theatre company brought to stage the play “Not one of us!”. This was an interactive play where students were invited to play some small roles. After the actors went away it was time to roll up the sleeves and work on the scenery that should be ready for the school play about water pollution to be taken to scene on Thursday. This was one of the highlights of the program. Funny, entertaining, but highly pedagogical, focusing the problems of adolescence in modern times.
    In the afternoon the group went to the Caniçada Dam where they could enjoy a slow journey in the Brancelhe boat. The landscape is bucolic and amongst the vegetation the group could even spot one of Cristiano Ronaldo’s houses. On the way back all these teenagers could hang around Parque dos Moinhos near River Ave.     Czytaj więcej

    Vieira do Minho

    Following the agenda for the first day the Portuguese students prepared a welcoming ceremony where they performed some of the activities they do throughout the school year, being the strongest ones gymnastics and music.
    The tour around the school facilities show that rebuilding is happening and in less than two years a new school will be ready. In the afternoon participants from all countries formed teams with a student from each nationality to get engaged in sport for team bonding and faster acknowledgement of each other. Everybody seemed to have a good time and feel comfortable with this challenge. The day ended with a kind of a treasure hunt to get to know Vieira a bit better.     Czytaj więcej

    Outra vez Joanesburgo

    Neste último dia fomos a Pretória - Union Buildings and Gardens - e, em Joanesburgo visitámos Constitution Hill e Montecasino.
    Union Buildings (Uniegebou em africanse) é a residência oficial e sede do gabinete do Presidente da África do Sul. Foi construído em 1910 e tem estilo vitoriano. Tem cerca de 285 metros de fachada e possui forma circular, com asas laterais que representam a união do povo outrora dividido e as duas línguas mais faladas do país, o inglês e o africâner.Os seus jardins estão plantados exclusivamente com espécies da flora sul-africana e possuem diversos monumentos e um anfiteatro com nove mil lugares.
    Constitution Hill foi uma prisão até 1998. Aqui estiveram presos homens e mulheres de renome mundial - Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Joe Slovo, Albertina Sisulu, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela e Fátima Meer, todos cumpriram pena aqui. Para além deles também aqui estiveram confinados dezenas de milhares de pessoas comuns durante seus 100 anos de história: homens e mulheres de todas as raças, credos, idades e agendas políticas, o homem comum e a elite. A história de todo sul-africano está aqui presente. Muitas das pessoas que aqui estiveram não cometeram qualquer crime. Apenas foram presas por serem negras e estarem na rua fora das horas de recolher obrigatório.
    Montecasino é isso mesmo, um casino com uma centro comercial envolvente.
    E é assim que deixamos a Africa do Sul, com vontade de ter ficado mais um pouco. É um país demasiadamente grande. Devemos ter visto 1% do que há para ver!     Czytaj więcej

    Hoje foi apenas dia de regresso. Antes de sairmos ainda temos uma visita pela plantação de café da quinta onde ficámos alojados. Paragem para almoço com vista para um parque com rinocerontes, o único dos grande cinco que não vimos. Fora isso, fui pesquisando os nomes dos animais que vimos durante estes três dias.     As fotos hoje dizem mais do que palavras. Apenas alguns dos nomes em inglês dos animais que não aparecem nas fotos para memória futura: kudu, waterbuck, marabou stork, hippo, steenbok, nyala, gnu, vervet monkey, warthog, baboon, lions and leopards, entre outros mais pequenos. Claro que elefantes, girafas, búfalos e impalas foram sempre mais fáceis de avistar não só pelo tamanho, mas também pela abundância! Czytaj więcej

    De Balule a Hazyview

    Hoje o caminho era o destino. Os cerca de 250 kms que separam Balule de Hazyview estão cheios de atrações naturais. Infelizmente não paramos em todas, mas temos a oportunidade de ver as Three Roundavells no Blyde River Canyon, os Burke Luck Potholes e God’s Window. Como é fim de ano nem tudo está aberto, o almoço passa a ser num restaurante de comida portuguesa, gerida por moçambicanos. Às quatro horas está tudo a fechar mas as filas nas lojas de bebidas alcoólicas são longas. A preferência dos sul africanos vai para a cerveja, o gin e o licor de marula, de produção local. Nós acabámos por brindar o novo ano com as nossas garrafas de água mineral! Mais um belo dia em África. Czytaj więcej

    Safari em Balule

    Este foi o dia perfeito! Alvorada às 5:30h, pequeno almoço às 6h, saída às 6:30h. A caminhada pela savana foi para ver detalhes. Desde caca de elefante ou girafa, passando por pegadas, buracos escavados no chão ou plantas, tudo é importante aqui. O Joe e o Steve são cuidadosos, mas muito divertidos e explicam a savana de maneira simples. De volta ao nosso acampamento podemos usufruir da piscina e de um simpático brunch antes de sairmos novamente, mas desta vez de jipe para tentarmos avistar o cinco grandes - leopardo, rinoceronte, leão, elefante e búfalo. E conseguimos ver claramente e muito perto uma manada de elefantes e uma de búfalos. Quanto ao leopardo, estivemos a olhar para umas ervas onde supostamente estaria, mas francamente, não o consegui ver. Foi um dia muito feliz outra vez! Czytaj więcej

    A caminho de Balule - Kruger Park

    Dia madrugador! Entre Joanesburgo e a entrada oeste do Parque Nacional Kruger separam-nos mais de 500kms. Por isso, as 6:30 estamos de partida. Vamos fazendo paragens estratégicas para comprar água, alguns snacks e “bushy bushy”. Ao almoço parámos em Dullstroom e comemos num simpático restaurante na rua principal, pontilhada de cima abaixo de restaurantes, lojas de souvenirs e especialidades da região - artesanato e tudo o que esteja relacionado com salmão, já que está zona é famosa pela sua pesca. Nota máxima para o “malva pudding” que, apesar de dulcíssimo, fez justiça à tradição doceira da África do Sul. Chamada de atenção ainda para a tentativa de bater o recorde do Guiness no tempo de permanência dentro de um barril em cima de um poste... o proponente já cumpriu 44 dos 67 dias que terá que ai ficar.
    Da parte da tarde o plano é chegar ao parque Krüger por volta das cinco. E assim foi. Os 13 kms desde a entrada até ao alojamento são cheios de surpresas. Poucos metros decorridos a Tixa avistou uma girafa, logo a seguir impalas e ainda zebras acostadas pelo Wolfi e elefantes muito ao longe, já na orla da piscina do nosso lodge.
    Steve e Joe, os nossos guias, são simpáticos e bem dispostos. Entre brincadeiras e piadas fazem-nos sentir confortáveis neste mato cheio de animais selvagens, com direito a mergulho na piscina e jantar de grelhados e vegetais. Tudo maravilhoso! Dia feliz!     Czytaj więcej

    Sterkfontein e o Berço da Humanidade

    Saímos de manhã para as grutas de Sterkfontein, a cerca de 40 kms de Joanesburgo. Nesta área foi encontrado aquele que pode ser considerado como o primeiro humano. Em 1947, foi encontrado um crânio quase completo, que Dr Robert Broom disse ter pertencido a uma fêmea e terá uma idade entre 2,8 e 2,3 milhões de anos. As cavernas, de formação cársica, apresentam as clássicas estalagmites e estalactites e levam-nos ate 60m de profundidade. É muito interessante perceber como a prospeção do calcário, ligada à do ouro, levou a uma descoberta mais recente na mesma caverna de um esqueleto quase completo de outro exemplar, mas com uma idade estimada em 3,3 milhões de anos. A família Stegmann, proprietária destas terras, doou as cavernas à Universidade de Witwatersrand em 1958. No local existe o Robert Broom Museum, desde 1966, que tem informação sobre os achados, assim como sobre a evolução humana. À tarde vamos para Berço da Humanidade, Maropeng, que significa “retorno ao lugar de origem” em Setswana, uma das onze línguas oficiais da África do Sul. No Maropeng Visitor Centre viaja-se no tempo até ao começo do nosso universo, há cerca de 14 bilhões de anos, até o presente. A mostra levanta questões, entre outras, de como nosso cérebro se desenvolveu, de onde veio a linguagem, quando foi o fogo usado pela primeira vez e quais os riscos que nossa espécie corre no futuro. Quando se sai do centro dá-se de caras com uma vista incrível das colinas em direção a Magaliesberg, uma das melhores vistas em Gauteng. Czytaj więcej

    Chegada a Joanesburgo

    Hoje foi dia de viagem. Começámos às 23:00 de Lisboa no dia 26, parámos em Luanda durante duas horas e chegámos a Johanesburgo meia hora mais cedo do que o previsto. Depois de tratarmos da logística - dinheiro, cartões de telemóvel sul africanos e transfer - lá chegámos à Greenfire Lodge Johannesburg. É um alojamento com o telhado em colmo à moda antiga e um toque bem africano. Tem uma biblioteca onde se podem fazer trocas de livros ou até pedir livros emprestados e depois trazê-los no regresso. A sala de estar também é simpática e a nossa estalajadeira é uma mulher forte, loura, fumadora e ossuda. Dá-nos instruções para o dia seguinte e aconselha-nos um restaurante para o nosso jantar. Chegámos lá por volta das seis e trinta e já fomos tarde. O restaurante já estava cheio e acabámos por ter que esperar. Compensou a comida de qualidade em que a especialidade são bifes. Passado pouco tempo a Mané juntou-se a nós para combinarmos o dia seguinte. Vamos dividir-nos por dois carros e fazer a visita ao Berço da Humanidade.
    Como o dia já vai longo às 10:00 é hora de recolhimento. um um um um toque bem africano. Tem umuns quartos     Czytaj więcej

    É o último dia na Sicília. Depois da habitual manhã de trabalho, passámos pela câmara municipal onde a diretora da escola, também vereadora da educação, nos apresenta os planos da autarquia e nos acompanha a uma escola profissional onde comemos uma refeição deliciosa preparada pelos alunos de cozinha e servida pelos alunos de mesa e bar.
    À tarde e ao jantar ficámo-nos por Mazara. Uma cidade dividida em quatro quarteirões diferentes - árabe, judeu, espanhol e siciliano - em que as várias culturas coabitam de forma equilibrada e sem quezílias. Um fim de dia bem disposto com um final descontraído.     Czytaj więcej

    Érice, Marsala e Trapani

    Depois da nossa manhã habitual de trabalho saímos para Érice, na esperança de que não houvesse nuvens a tapar a vista, mas não foi isso que aconteceu. Para além das nuvens estava frio e não se via um palmo diante do nariz. O almoço foi farto e a seguir a degustação de figuras de maçapão à moda do Algarve deixou toda a gente empanturrado e incapaz de comer mais até ao fim do dia. Mas ainda passámos por Trapani para apreciar a ponta mais ocidental a ilha. À noite acabou com umas cervejinhas e uma boa vonversa à moda portuguesa. Czytaj więcej

    Marsala - sal e vinho

    Depois de passarmos por Milão e de muitos transferes e escalas, finalmente chegámos a Marsala, uma cidade na orla marítima da Sicília. À nossa espera está Francesca, uma divertida professora de literatura Italiana. Os alunos do Liceo linguístico Pascasino presenteiam-nos com uma atuação musical conduzida por Vita, a professora de música, e acabámos também nós a cantar algumas músicas italianas. Da escola saímos para a Reserva Natural das Ilhas de Stagnone, onde se encontram as salinas e a Ilha de Mozia, onde foram encontrados vestígios de um cemitério fenício, bem como de ferramentas e provas da sua tradição de comércio. É um sítio onde, de acordo com Rossella, apenas os cães são habitantes permanentes. O dia está perfeito e seguimos para as caves de vinho espirituoso Florio. Para alem de toda a explicação, muito interessante por sinal, podemos ainda degustar quatro tipos de vinho. Acabámos o dia no centro da cidade num jantar no La Marinara, junto à Porta Garibaldi, na companhia dos simpáticos professores polacos. Czytaj więcej

    Our farewell to Warsaw

    And this is it... Our last day in the city is a relaxed day. The families that host our students were so kind to bring them to the train station in Malkinia. More tears were shed and after long hugs, a lot of waving and some drawing on the train window, off we go back to Warsaw and to the Jewish ghetto for a bit more insight about it.
    The rest of the day was relaxing and easy going. All went well and all our plans succeeded!

    Treblinka and farewells...

    Today the day started in a very hard way. The visit to Treblinka - the concentration and labour camp 4km far from Malkinia - reported us to the violence and cruelty of World War II. Although the camp has been devoured by the flames initiated by the Germans at the end of the war, part of the structure of the railway is still visible and the memorials meanwhile erected are explained with emphasis by the Polish students. The walk back to the museum is silent and the video we watch helps us to better understand the horrors of war. In the afternoon the ambience is more relaxed and all the teams prepare videos in the workshop organised for this purpose. The day ends up with the ceremony to deliver the diplomas, the exchange of gifts made by our hosts, a dinner cooked by teachers and parents and a cheerful party with music, volleyball and football all mixed together. Of course some tears came up as farewells happened. These experiences are always very intense and emotive. Thank you Polish team for all the care and affection. Our gratitude also goes to the families that so well took care of the Portuguese and Italian students. See you all soon. Czytaj więcej

    The UNESCO Torun

    Toruń and Krakow are the two Polish cities that were spared the devastation of war. Toruń is also considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite being about 300 kilometers from Malkinia, it was worth the visit for its imposing and architectural beauty. At every corner Copernicus is visible with its houses, statues and street names. Another history class that also makes us pay a visit to the city's History Museum.
    Before returning to Malkinia there was still time to make the famous gingerbread cookies that are also a symbol of the city.     Czytaj więcej

    Back to Malkinia!

    Our day started well! Today's class was at Malkinia Technical School and the subject was “pirogi”. It seems difficult, but it is not. We could call it steamed “rissóis”, if we were in Portugal, or “ravioli”, if we were in Italy. We learned how to do them in a demonstration in a cooking lesson at this school and then we had to put what we have learned into practice. Savory or sweet, afterwards we could taste them in the school dining room. A fun and tasty experience!
    In the afternoon, after a guided tour to the school facilities, we devoted ourselves to writing and started an article about our opinion on mobility - our working tools were Google Docs and Canva.

    Warsaw - open air history class!

    Warsaw Day! The capital of Poland is imposing. The guide that the Polish team chose was fantastic! He was able to keep our team's attention throughout the visit and made himself understood all the time, always trying to rephrase his speech to make himself understood. A three-hour walking tour of the city has led us to remarkable historical times for the world and for Europe, namely the latest and most terrible world war. Despite the massacre to which the Polish people were subjected in this war, the shock that came to our guide was evident throughout our visit when he realized that there was an even more tortured people within his own country - the Jewish people. We went through various places of interest. We saw the modus operandi of the German army, its cruelty and the destruction it has caused in the city, leading to its near total destruction. It is therefore amazing to see how the Polish people dedicated themselves to the complete reconstruction of the city and carried out a brilliant and Herculean task.
    The Soviet presence is also very evident and its biggest symbol is the imposing Palace of Culture - a replica of the palace of the same name in Moscow. From the top you can see the whole city, making the obvious exercise of recognizing the places we have been to before.
    After lunch it is fun time! Learning by doing! The interactive Science Museum brings knowledge and tests individual capabilities, increasing critical spirit and leading to knowledge in a sustained but also empirical way. From physical dexterity to the sensory part, going through pure knowledge of the laws of physics and science, anything is possible here.     Czytaj więcej

    Malkinia school and around

    The day was fantastic at Malkinia Gorna school. Teachers and students did their best to show us what they love to do in their elementary school till the ninth grade, with about 430 students. A talent show held in the school gym showed us the school's skills and the way younger and older pupils help and encourage each other in both leisure activities but also at their academic subjects. Dance, music and sport are strengths for this school which for some years has been among the best in the country. Students who presented the show said that their effort comes from their willingness to follow the examples of their teachers who are not afraid to face challenges and who show them the right path to be autonomous but also to have fun while doing it. And the proof of all this was in the show they presented for about an hour.
    After a coffee break prepared by the students' teachers and parents, it was time to get engaged in the robotics workshop and prepare the Legos that would later move across the classroom floor.
    The afternoon was spent around a bonfire in the Malkinia nature park listening to the park manager telling stories of Portuguese, Turks, Italians and Romanians who passed through his life and marked him. The Portuguese he spoke of was a hard-working woman whom he found in the Swiss harvest and who worked more than men and women altogether. His humility and life experience stuck us to his words from beginning to end. But we didn’t end up here. Alena and Anna taught us a Polish dance that got everyone moving and wanting to take a dip in the river after it's over. It was a very nice time, followed by team and concentration games, which essentially gave us this sense of well-being and group unity.
    At the end of the day there was still time for having dinner with families and students with some dance included.     Czytaj więcej
