  • Waiting on our China visas

    January 19, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 46 °F

Time is getting closer. Sent of our requests for China visas about a week ago. Cost us about $450 to make that happen. Going through a company that Gate1 uses (GenVisa) which allows me to mail all the docs to them and then they process it through the Chinese Embassy. Otherwise I’d be driving to Washington DC and probably spending more money to make it happen. I was a bit shocked at the cost of that visa. However, it is good for 10 years, not that I see ourselves going back and forth repeatedly to China. Saw a news article the other day indicating the alert level for China had been raised to Level 2 due to some arbitrary “exit ban” they’ve instituted which means they can keep you from exiting the country. Guess I need to start practicing my Chinese!

Also went in and selected aisle/aisle seats for us on our American flights so that we weren’t faced with a 14 hr flight having to stumble over people to get into the aisle. Usually Janet will do window and I’ll be stuck in the middle. I’ll live with that to Europe if I have to, but no way to China!!

Weather should hopefully be decent in late March/early May. Maybe mid 50’s during the day. https://www.chinahighlights.com/beijing/weather…

  • Shots and flight changes

    February 19, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌧 34 °F

Got our Hep A and typhoid shots today. Sore arms but probably a wise idea, especially for this boy.

United sent me a notification today cutting our connect time in Denver to 45 minutes on our way to LAX. Had been 1 hr 10 mins. Not good. Now we’ll have to see if they will be good guys and move us to an earlier flight. Will find out if being a United Mileage Plus member for 40 years is worth anything. United loves to cut those connect times in Denver down to 45 mins or less. Unfortunately we were using frequent flyer miles and that was our 1 option for the miles we had.Read more

  • Just a few more days!

    March 22, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 41 °F

Getting closer to blast off time! Crossing my fingers our flights work out. I tried to switch my crummy connection in Denver (45 mins - thanks a lot for moving me to that United) to go through Chicago and thought I had that all worked out till I double checked and discovered the United rep on the phone had moved me to the wrong flight going out of Chicago and now I’m on a 49 minute connection at O’Hare. Lovely. So now we we have to wait for the day of departure to see if we can get on a slightly later flight. Frequent flyer miles are involved as well, so that further complicates things.

Got our Chinese Yuan, our shots, our visas, our passports (copies of our passports! - oh yeh baby - multiplex copies of those things! - getting a new passport in Greece after getting pick-pocketed was probably child’s play compared to getting a new one in China.

Various health issues (back, foot) are making me a bit nervous - especially when looking at a 12-14 hr flight. Thank God for an aisle seat. And fortunately I’m not on one of those Boeing Max planes!

Back in a few days with further updates

  • Exploring VPN's and China

    March 22, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 48 °F

Experimenting with various VPN's in the hope that I might be able to access Facebook,Netflix, Twitter, New York Times, etc. I've been using PrivateInternetAccess and it might work after I tweaked some settings per their Help site. Also downloaded and installed NordVPN which might work as well. Chinese don't tolerate a lot of our Western idiosyncrasies. :) Found this website where you can type in a website and it will tell you if you can access it in China.https://www.comparitech.com/privacy-security-to… Of course, hopefully using one of the VPN's will make it possible. Total shot in the dark, I'm sure.Read more

    CLT- ORD

    March 24, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 48 °F

Parked the van at “The Parking Spot”. Very nice. They are a new affiliate of AAA so members get discounts on parking there and employees get even better discounts! Very easy to get to in Charlotte. Exit Little Rock Rd off of I-85 and then just a few simple turns. Better than anything I’ve done in the past while parking at CLT. Scanned the app at the gate. The attendant said Parking lot K. As soon as we parked, attendant was there to load our bags and we were off.

On board our United flight (CRJ-700) at 10:30 am saying a silent prayer we make our connection in ORD. Tried to get on later flight Out of ORD - no luck. United counter person was less than helpful (our luck). Guess a lot of Spring Breakers are traveling sucking up all the seats. On a very small plane 2-2 heading to ORD. Had to put our bags under the plane - that will not help. But hey we’re alive and it’s a sunny day!! Think I heard the pilot say it is a 1 hr 37 minute flight- if true that might help as it is listed as 2:12. Lifted off at 10:49 edt. Got a 13 minute walk to get between gates at ORD. Arranged for wheelchair to see if that would help. (Told flight attendant about our short connection and she was quite nice -said she’d do what she could to help. Came back a few minutes later to tell us the United counter person didn’t actually put wheelchair on our reservation, but she’d call ahead. ). Got the usual small pack of pretzels - cant fly w/o pretzels!

Due in at 11:58 am. Making approach at 11:12. Touchdown at 11:15. At the gate at 11:25. Just got a phone alert that connection time has increased from 49 mins to 1 hr 23 mins. Great news!!

We’re so early no gate attendant to let us off the plane. Finally off - bags and wheelchairs waiting. Heck they even had IPads on the back of the chairs with your names lit up. Nice to have someone bring you to the gate. At the gate with an hour to go! I am ready for an entire bottle of Jim Beam!

    ORD - LAX

    March 24, 2019 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

On board at 12:30. Still can’t believe we made it. Gate checked our carry-on so I didn’t have to strain my back cramming that into the overhead. Nothing to eat on this flight and no entertainment center. I think Lufthansa spoiled us. Fortunately we had our own food which Janet almost left behind in Security. She had left her flight itinerary in the food bag so security knew who it belonged to. We were already at the gate when Janet heard our names being paged over the Intercom - good thing she has decent hearing!!

Lot of great views passing over the canyons of the Southwest ! Janet is doing a great job in that window seat and then airdropping them to me so I can post them

Looks like we’re gonna get in 20 minutes early. (2:50 pm)

Los Angeles - night before departure

    March 24, 2019 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 59 °F

Got in 20 minutes early. Smooth flight - 4 hours and 1 bag of pretzels. I call that rather pathetic. Called the WINGATE to arrange our shuttle to the hotel. Very nice hotel room. Got a Travel Agent rate which made it all the better. Showed up in about 15 minutes - nice guy - told us restaurants to eat at close to the hotel, but in the end, we chose to look at Yelp and found a place about 1/2 mile away. Nice stroll in mid 60 degree weather. Nice to get off our butts from sitting all day! Went to a nice Mexican restaurant - favorited by the locals you could tell. Think we were the only Gringos I saw. Everybody was super friendly to us (wait staff and people sitting near us) and made us feel right at home. Had a few beers and some fine food, followed up by a killer Flan. Best one we’ve ever had. Coconut flan - super creamy - not watery stuff here. Delicious.Read more
