  • Best. Night. Ever.

    July 17 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 91 °F

Did we do anything innovative, unusual or earth shattering?
    No.
I walked to work. I went through Bryant Park and admired how they build community in unique ways.
I noticed 90% of NYC business men wear navy trousers (that's for you, Ellen) and a light blue shirt with brown shoes.
I worked in my favorite coworker club.
I got a Mexican feast to go and meet Emily in the hotel.
    All we did:
A bed picnic using the ironing board as our table.
    Watched The Office
Watched Mincemeat clips and discussed making of the show
Laughed a lot at really goofy stuff (be chaste)
    Ate our mediocre Mexican food

    It was wonderful.

  • LE café-a non bagel day

    July 16 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

    I. Can't. Do. It. Anymore.
Today will be a bagel free day.
I am snestling up with a healthy Chia seed pudding and iced latte (hold the mocha).
Even though I'm walking on average 6 miles a day, by body is saying to try something a bit less sugars-laden.
Oh, and my body is also telling me to lay off the beet juice. My bathroom looked like a crime scene this morning. Twas a little shocking until I remembered yesterday's juicing extravaganza.
That's one way to wake up quickly!

  • Operation Mincemeat

    July 15 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Em and I went to catch Operation Mincemeat. What an amazing show!!!! This was Emily's 5th time seeing it and she filled me in on all the lore pre-show. There are 5 actors who each play a ton of roles and they were truly magical how they used costumes and stage props to help the characters come to life. And the show was so funny.... And weirdly based on a true story. Emily should know--she wrote a Wikipedia page about it!Read more

  • College Reunion Lunch

    July 15 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Julie and I met each other freshman year when we were pledging Chi Omega and have been friends ever since (minutes a few years as explained in my Badass blog that outlines our 30 year feud but we won't get into that now)
It was a beautiful lunch with her - - three hours of catching up on new news and reminiscing about old memories.
I love it how you can go years without seeing someone and pick right back up where you left off.
Plus I got to check out Columbia University where her daughter goes to school and I picked up a book I've been wanting to read at Book Culture. This book promises to wreck me emotionally and I will be shoving by the end. Not sure why this sounds like a good idea to read but I'll keep you posted.

  • 911 Museum.

    July 15 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

What a meaningful and well designed museum. I am so glad I decided to come here. And I got lucky that I was the first one in and got to experience it all on my own for quite a while. Too difficult to put into words all that is on display, but it brought back all the feelings experienced all those years ago. I was able to find the picture and profile for the man from my high school who worked on the 108th floor of the north tower. I saw the same news footage I watched that day. And I learned a ton about the timeline and recovery. There were pictures of empty ambulances waiting in a line to be dispatched before they realized there weren't enough people who lived that needed them. I remember calling the hotline to volunteer as a nurse, only to get the reply that there was no need for medical help. What an unbelievably awful day.
I'm glad I went to see this important memorial.
Oh, and I had my #3 bagel. I tasted it 1 out of 10. Would not recommend. But the squirrel sitting next to me sure had a hankering for it.

  • PIOS bagel #3 and unexpected juice

    July 15 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

I decided to look up "to rated gluten free bagels NYC" and whatever article came up first, I would go to that location.
    Pio's it is.
And it was only 450 feet from my hotel!
I preordered my now famous olive cream cheese on everything bagel. But they didn't have any coffee that looked good (I just can't do the black coffee thing right now) so I didn't pre-order one thinking I would stop at a coffee place.
However, once I got to Pio's, I was delighted to see they had a full coffee bar menu so I ordered my favorite iced mocha.
Then I saw they had gluten free black and white cookies. How new York! I had to get one.
But then I felt judged by the cashier for getting such a sugar drenched carbloaded start to my day so I decided to tack on their "Healthy Start" juice special.
The cashier glared at me even more now and set about making my drinks. The mocha was easy enough. I figured all she had to do was open the refrigerator and pour out my juice and she could be rid of me.
But then I realized why she looked pissed. She went to the big refrigerator and took out whole beets, carrots, and a handful of spinach. She then put them though a juicer until I had a full glass of bright magenta goodness.
Ohhhh... It was absolutely delicious and I'm so glad I got it and I sucked it right on down (mostly because I was afraid I would dribble it all over my clothes) . Refreshing. And healthy!
I decided to tuck my bagel and cookie into my backpack to enjoy once I got to the next stop, and sipped my mocha happily on my way to the subway.
You'll have to wait for my next story to hear my bagel rating.
    Sorry not sorry.

  • Working Girl: "It's not even leathah"

    July 14 in the United States ⋅ 🌩️ 79 °F

Before this trip, I watched Working Girl for the first time in decades. Whoa...the fashion, the huge hair, the shoulder pads, the mysogeny, and the power skirt suits with sneakers and socks. But so fun to see NYC as one of the actual characters in the movie.

I needed to work today and I wanted to get out of my hotel room and see what it's like to 9 to 5 in the city (but without the Aquanet) .
So I rented workspace at Serendipity Labs.

    Really glad I did.

I had access to two floors of all kinds of work spaces. Open tables, "phone booths" for video calls, comfy couches and all kinds of desks. And unlimited coffee, tea, and infused water.

It worked. I got a ton of stuff done today. And I felt almost like Melanie Griffith walking with swarms of New Yorkers on my way home.

But since I worked so much, I didn't stop for lunch. So I jumped into Fred's Lobster and got a warm, belly filling bowl of clam chowder.

Good thing it warmed me up because I walked the mile back to the hotel in the rain. The rain ruined my plan of going to the outdoor movie at Bryant Park in the evening but that's OK. I'm taking a Pto day off tomorrow and I gotta plan my adventures.

And tomorrow I'll remember to bring my umbrella.

  • NYC bagel rating #2

    July 14 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Ok, these NY bagels are freaking delicious. I went to sleep last night dreaming of getting one for breakfast so I followed my dreams this morning and headed to Zucker's at Bryant Park.
Was it as good as yesterday's bagel?
Almost but not quite. Today was a gluten free everything with kalamata olive and feta cream cheese and a brown sugar cinnamon iced latte.
The feta in the cream cheese made today's choice better then yesterday but the girth and mouth feel of yesterday's bagel was so good that today's didn't quite make it.
However, the aethetics of my dining environment trumped all since I am now sitting in the park by a fountain with skyscrapers in the background watching pigeons and reading my newest very favorite book of the month The Lost Bookshop.
    Ahhhhhhhh..... Life is freaking good.

  • Drunk Shakespeare

    July 13 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 77 °F

    Oh.... My... Head....
Going to see Drunk Shakespeare was the best decision of the day.
What is this marvel of theater?
Well, there are five actors who are going to perform Romeo and Julie. But the twist is that one of the actors does six shots of vodka at the start of the show and tries to keep up with the pace of the show.
    It was freaking hilarious!!!!
Not only did the drunkee get funnier and funnier, but the rest of the show was c the most amusing thing--full of clever ad-libbing, twists to the plot based on pop culture, and very creative uses of... Ahem... Sex toys.
I don't often laugh out loud during comedies but this one does the trick.
Plus, it was in a super cool library themed wrap around stage and they gave everyone whisky shots upon entering.
Which is probably why the show was so funny, now that I think about it...

  • New yawk za

    July 13 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

After a rest and a much needed cool shower to wash off my sweat from the day, I headed out to try some NY style pizza. LEDOS was a place that had highly rated gluten free pizza so I decided to give it a try.
    Was the pizza amazing?
    Nope.
But I didn't care because the place was cool and relaxing to hang in, the staff were super nice, and I had a glad of wine.
    I did!
Next, I wandered over to Bryant Park and hung out, eavesdropping on people sitting around me.
Two women were going through a dating app and one was trying to convince the other not to swipe on one guy because "he's wearing skinny jeans. Skinny jeans!!! What is wrong with him. You don't want him".
Next was a stop at a Japanese bookseller. What a cool place! Three stories of every interesting book you have never seen before, stationary, toys, and more. I could have wandered around for hours but I had to get skedoodling to meet up with Em for our next adventure, Drunk Shakespeare.

  • Central Park explorations

    July 13 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

I could have walked 2 miles to get to central park.
But why would I when I can take a subway instead.
    And I didn't get lost.
I think I should get a merit badge in being a new yorker.
The subway popped me out by the natural history museum, but my attention was on central park android the street.
    I wandered.
    I roamed through The Ramble.
    I watched a softball game.
I saw many almost naked joggers.
I swabbed my face over and over... Feels hotter than Florida somehow.
Em and I had lunch plans so I walked through the museum on my way to meet her for bubble tea and Sushi. We strolled through The Strand bookstore, scavenged through a thrift shop, and sat on the How I Met Your Mother steps.
And then we both hit a wall of overwhelming fatigue and heat.
So back to the subway and off to take a cool shower and a nap before tonight's event.
    A good day.
    But Hella hot.
    I swat a lot.

  • Best bagel ever

    July 13 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

First stop in my quest to understand what it's like to be a new yorker: get a bagel and a schmear from a deli. Check--done! Omg.... The most delicious bagel... Gluten free everything with a giant glop of olive cream cheese and a side of iced mocha goodness. Starting the day out right. The bagel was so good, I inhaled it before I could grab a photo. But just know that it was a beautiful creation. Yum.....Read more

  • The Mercer Labs

    July 12 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Em and I tooled around the city, starting with times square where is was packed cheek to cheek with people getting out of Broadway matinees and attending a giant pet adoption event. After looking at a while bunch of good NYC pups, our social Claustrophobia took over and we yeeted down to Soho. Ahhhhhh..... Much better. We strolled and Emily told me all about architectural lore and what it is like living in the city. We wandered down to the financial district and I got to see her work place. After stopping of at Oculus to grab... Ahhhhhh.. Steak tacos (yum) we spur of the moment decided to cross the street to Mercer Labs, grabbing the last tickets of the night.
Wow!!!!! So glad we did. This is an art installation museum that involves all your senses. One room was a tactile experience where you lie down on the ground in a room that the floor vibrates to the sound experience. Another room allowed you to swing on swings while watching digital art that was oddly hypnotizing. But there were two favorite rooms of mine. In one room, you were given an outline of a dinosaur for you to color in. Once done, the Engineer would upload it and suddenly your dinosaur was in full 3-D and animated. For the next half an hour, you would see your guy walking around the room engaging with the other dinosaurs that others had drawn. Super, super fun!
And my second favorite room was a blackout gigantic ball pit. Adults and kids were all swimming in, hiding in, and sliding into these giant ball pits. Emily and I dove in and laughed out way through this wicked fun experience. RIP to my newly gifted water NYC Mayors Office bottle (thanks Emily). Which is lost forever in the ball pit (sorry Emily) but super glad I was able to find my glasses after they took a dive in.
Next stop... MR. Softee ice cream and a stroll along the 911 memorial area. There was an outdoor movie playing, an amazing whimsical Animal themed climbing sculpture, and a harried security officer trying to wrangle a group of misbehaving tourists. Twas fun to watch.
Then, my "become a new yorker for the week" started. I learned how to use the subway and found my way back to my hotel.
Is it weird that I feel ridiculously proud of this?
I got back to my tiny but cozy hotel room, cranked the temperature down to 65 degrees, jumped in a cold shower, and settled in to watch a documentary about 80s music videos.
    I loved today.
