Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park to Mto wa Mbu

These include the world’s largest bird, the ostrich, and shrieking colonies of dazzling yellow-collared lovebirds. Shy dwarf mongoose make their homes in the colossal termite mounds that bring a surreal architecture to a busy landscape also decorated with the ancient baobab tree. On your game drive you’re sure to see family groups of the majestic elephant, and don’t forget to look closely at the trees: you might see a leopard stretched on a stout branch, lazily flicking its tail. Look more closely and you could see a python, resting between meals. After a busy day you’ll be driven to the Mto wa Mbu to Fanaka campsite, which has a range of good facilities, and cooked a delicious dinner under a sky awash with stars.
Day 3: Mto wa Mbu to Serengeti
As the stars fade in the glow of dawn you’ll wake to a pink and apricot sunrise and be served an appetizing breakfast as a cheerful start to your adventure to the Serengeti National Park. We will drive near – but not into (yet) - the verdant Ngorongoro Crater. Our real Ngorongoro Crater adventure is later on but first it’s time to enjoy the Serengeti. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, and you can see why: the endless golden savannah is decorated with bursts of colour of flowers of all descriptions attracting the buzzing of bustling insects and the calls of a thousand different birds. You’ll spot ear-twitching gazelle and perhaps be lucky enough to witness the famed annual migration of the brindled wildebeest. Watch out also for the toughest animal you’ll ever likely to meet: no, not a rhino, but the fearless honey badger. We’ll enjoy a lunch stop on a kopje and then make our way further into the Serengeti for some more wildlife watching. You’ll rest your tired eyes and muscles in a comfortable Nyani campsite, listening to the sounds of the night.

Day 4: Fullgame Serengeti to Arusha
Be one of only a few fortunate people to glide in a Hot Air Balloon over the Serengeti Plains (available at supplementary cost by pre-arrangement). Floating silently above the awakening bush, while spotting wildlife and enjoying the amazing scenery of Africa, across rivers and over numerous small villages. We do an after breakfast game viewing drive along the Sogore River Circuit, which loops into the plains south of the Seronera River, and which is good for possible lion, Thomson gazelle, topi, ostrich and cheetah sightings. The visitor’s centre not far from the Serengeti Seronera Lodge and public campsites is well worth a visit after the morning’s game drive. This nicely designed centre, offers some interesting wildlife displays as well as a gift shop selling information leaflets and maps of the area. The centre also has a shop where cold drinks and snacks can be purchased, as well as a picnic area and information trail up and around a nearby kopje. We will enjoy a relaxed picnic lunch at the centre in the shade of the giant acacia trees. In the afternoon we will follow the Kopjes Circuit, which goes anti-clockwise around the Maasai Kopjes, which usually attract a number of lion and some formidably large cobras. Kopjes are weathered granite outcrops, scattered around the plains, most of which are miniature ecosystems, providing shade and drinking water in pools left in the rock after the rains. This makes the kopjes particularly good for spotting wildlife in the dry seasons – including lions, which like to lie in wait for animals coming to drink! Back to arusha.

Once you leave the forest sunshade, Kilimanjaro’s two peaks snow covered Kibo and rocky Mawenzi – lie straight ahead overlooking the skyline.Further on you cross a zone of open moorland with diminutive vegetation, today you gain roughly 1,000m altitude; the walk can take five to seven hours depending on your pace but always POLE POLE. Tonight for Dinner and overstay at Horombo Huts.

    DAY 3 – HOROMBO HUT
A day here provides an opportunity for you to acclimatize step by step to the altitude, Information show that an acclimatization day effectively doubles the chance of succession to reach the summit, thus the time is well spent! The day is not precisely wasted as there is several walks you can take just in the locality of the hut, but we will take the most famous walk of which most people take for acclimatization which leads you to the base of Mawenzi Peak the dramatic eastern summit of Kilimanjaro. The walk takes 4-5 hours a round trip and will go till to an altitude of 4,600Mts then you will return back to Horombo Hut for Dinner and Overnight this walk will put you in good shape later on.

    DAY 5 – UHURU PEAK
This is a long and demanding day! The guides wake you soon after midnight and you start out in darkness, zigzagging up a long scree slope by the light of your torch in the extreme cold. At this time of day the scree is still frozen – which makes it easier to walk on! After roughly two hours you should reach Hans Meyer’s Cave – named after the German geologist who made the first successful ascent in 1889 – where he found the remains of a frozen leopard. The gradient gets steeper and three hours on (this is the hardest stretch of the climb! you should reach the crater rim at Johanne’s Notch. From here it’s a short scramble to Gillman’s Point (5,685m) in time for dawn. Your reward is the dramatic spectacle of the sun rising over the ice fields and craggy peaks of Mawenzi – the profusion of colors and shapes make all the suffering seem worthwhile! For those who still have the energy and drive, it takes another couple of hours along the crater rim to reach Uhuru (Freedom) Peak (5,896m). Boma Road Moshi Kilimanjaro

    January 18, 2018 in Tanzania ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut.
Take a short drive from Moshi town to the Kilimanjaro Park Gate (1,830 m.) lies at the edge of Marangu, which is an attractive village with many small coffee and banana plantations. After completing the entrance formalities, we climb up through attractive and unspoiled forest to reach the clearing containing Mandara Hut (2,700 m.). The volcanic remains of Maundi Crater are nearby, and make a good afternoon excursion. An alternative is to rest and enjoy the beautiful forest. There is a rich birdlife at the huts and monkeys are often seen as well. [3-5 hours walking to Mandara Hut]

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The first part of the walk is a steep ascent through forest, but the path soon opens out into grassy moorland and, in clear weather, there are good views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. We climb steadily through the moorland zone, containing giant heather and occasional stands of groundsel, to eventually reach Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). Sunrises and sunsets here are often very stunning, the site is close to the glaciated dome of Kibo, and there is a real sense of being above the clouds. [4-6 hours walking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut]

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
We climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The terrain changes to screed and there is a palpable sense of high altitude wilderness. We usually reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) at the bottom of the crater wall by midday and the afternoon is free (to contemplate the summit ascent!!). The remainder of the day is spent resting and eating in preparation for the final climb before a very early night! [4-5 hours walking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut]

Day 4: Summit Day then down to Horombo Hut
We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1 a.m. so that we can be up at Gillman’s Point by sunrise. The initial climb is steep over loose volcanic screen, but there are some well-graded zigzag and a slow but steady pace will have us up to Gillman’s (5,685 m.) in about five or six hours. We will rest there and spend some time taking in the sunrise. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.) passing close to the spectacular glaciers that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent is surprisingly fast and we return to Horombo Hut for the night. [11-15 hours walking from Kibo Hut to Gillman’s Point]

Day 5: Horombo Hut – Moshi
After breakfast,we will start with a pleasant moorland walk to Mandara and then a lovely forest walk to the National Park gates to Moshi town.
The greenness and lushness of the forest is quite a stunning contrast to the summit day, and it really makes you realize how varied the scenery on Kilimanjaro really is. [5-6 hours walking]
