Sarina is in the start of the cane growing area of North Queensland. The triumphs and mistakes are well shown with the biggest mistake of all on huge display. Buffy the cane toad represents what can go wrong when inadequate research precedes a decision to import exotic animals.

The murals show illustrations of the old way of harvesting sugar cane. Totay it is all tractors fueled by copious amounts of diesel fuel.

Shops here still use older style displays to attract attention from potential customers.Meer informatie

Wintermoon Festival.

As you all know, what happens at Wintermoon stays at Wintermoon. I can't possibly break 25 years of tradition, so if you want to experience one of the best festivals anywhere, you will have to buy a ticket.

Camping at Lake Proserpine

Lake Proserpine is quite a spectacular spot. We can stay here for up to 72 hours. This morning we woke up to a mist covered lake with the most spectacular views you could wish to see. Yesterday presented a very nice sunset.Meer informatie

Lake Proserpine

We have camped here for two nights. It is a very pleasant and quiet place through the week but I was told by the cleaners it gets very hectic over weekends.

This morning there are many small birds in the nearby forest. We can mostly hear the many different calls. We know the high pitched Sunbird chatter and some of the other small birds. Every now and then we catch a flash of flight from one tree to the next.

The sun has just broken over the fairly high hills to out east. The warmth is very welcome on our legs as we enjoy our pre breakfast cup of tea and relax before we pack up to head to our next camp.Meer informatie

Camp Kanga

Camp Kanga is only a couple of kays down Crystal Brook road from the Peter Faust dam. It is nicely kept and turns out it is run by Lions clubs. During the year there are many school excursions to here with lots of dormitory accommodation.

Its nice to be camped on nice well manicured lawn grass. There are no prickles to hamper barefoot walking. There are good showers, shady areas, sunny areas and of course laundry and camp kitchen.

There are only several camps here at the moment and we have a nice spot where we can keep the batteries charged from the sun. Pam is hoping the kangas show up later.Meer informatie

Proserpine River

Running beside camp Kanga is the headwaters of the Proserpine River. Here it is a burbling brook not more than 30m wide. This morning we made our way to the river to take a look.

There were quite a number of birds but the most impressive sight was the many pretty water lily flowers along the stream. Apparently school groups are allowed to swim in the clear shallow part of the flowing river.

Not very far upstream is the Peter Faust dam, built in the nineties for extra water storage and a degree of flood mitigation. It seems that a reasonable flow is released continuously to take fresh water to the towns of Proserpine, Airlie Beach, Midge Point and many surrounding areas. Water from the dam also is used to irrigate sugar cane when the farm storage dams and wiers are insufficient.

Up above the dam is now a huge lake that is popular for fishing the stocked dam and water sports. There have been no recent sightings of crocodiles this far up but it is certainly not impossible or even improbable that they could make the 30k journey.Meer informatie

Glen Erin Farm Stay

3 days at this nice farmstay. The grounds are nicely mowed and there are not a lot of campers.

An excellent vantage to view Bowen. We took a walk along a rough unkempt walking track for more great views out to sea then back towards the harbour.

Just north from Flagstaff Hill is the southern end of Kings Beach. It is quite an interesting view from here, seeing the lighthouse from the same elevation as the ships would. Hopefully they won't see this view since we were on land.Meer informatie

Muller's Lagoon Park, Bowen.

In the middle of the town is Muller Lagoon. A project to handle recycled water, this is an area with lots of birds and turtles. It seems someone must feed them because as we walked along dozens popped their heads above the water and began swimming towards us. Not typical turtle behaviourMeer informatie

We found a dirt track a bit north of the Brisk bay township and drove in carefully until we were nearly at the shoreline. A tidal creek with a fairly clear bank went off into a dense stand of mangroves. We observed turtles swimming past with the outgoing tide. Every now and then a fish or two could be seen.Meer informatie

Bowen Jetty

The old jetty was completed in 1866. Built to make unloading of supplies less dangerous and more efficient for the day. Ships anchored well off the shore and transferred their load to and from drays taken as far out as possible at low tide.

The jetty had a rail line out so freight could be loaded between ship and wagons. This would have been a lot easier and quite a bit safer.Meer informatie

This is as far north as we can go via Bowen shores. To get any further north we would need to head up the highway. That's a tomorrow journey. For now we will return to town and check out a few of the many murals.Meer informatie

A fantastic mural on the water reservoir tanks. It is indeed very challenging to get good photos. Luckily the area has been mowed but some detail is impossible to capture.

There is a very good view over the town looking south from the road.

As you drive around the town there are some very good angles from the distance. There is more to see if you drive up the hill though.Meer informatie

The Art of Bowen Murals

There are many fabulous murals to be enjoyed around Bowen main streets. They would be best enjoyed walking around for the most part but we were running out of time. It became a drive/walk/photograph.

We captured quite a few but there were some we missed. I suspect the guide was a bit out of date as some we found did not seem to be on the list.Meer informatie

Last Night at Glen Erin.

This is our last night here. We had a huge day at Brisk Bay and around Bowen. There is quite a bit to do and we reckon a revisit might be needed in the future. Many more walks around the places we visited today.

We are hoping the Catalina memorial will be finished next trip with a real Catalina on display. The museum is another place on the wish list. Two days is simply not enough time to see Bowen.Meer informatie

Charlie's Hill was the site of an advance warning radar station. The very thick walled igloo bunkers are still largely intact but the wood is nearly all gone. Evidence of comms towers, radar supports and possibly generator blocks are still there.

A bit south of Giru is the bird hide. Normally this area has a lot of birds, but with the recent rain birds have scattered quite a lot. There were still a few around though.

Castle Hill by Night, Townsville.

Castle Hill is an awesome vantage point to view the city of Townsville by Night. There are several vantage points to the side of the car parks that offer fairly decent views.

As usual, the best views on offer require sacrifice, effort, and a degree of danger. The 250m summit track is enough to give normal people a pulse of adrenaline in broad daylight. At night with a smartphone led for light, some would say it is verging on crazy. The railing is very old and the path rough. I was rewarded with excellent views. The seaward side has several more vantage points way up an incline and a fair way down over the top. Once again, one might say, views to die for. Hopefully never literally.

This is a recommended visit, but suggest a decent flashlight.Meer informatie

Magnetic Island is only a few kilometres off the coast at Townsville. A short 20minute ferry ride and you are teleported to this island paradise. There are lots of walks, eating places, coffee shops, pubs and numerous walks.

There are a few shipwrecks to check out. For some there is swimming, snorkelling and numerous water activities. If you are bored it would be your own fault. Our day passed quite quickly and soon we were on the return journey to Townsville.Meer informatie

This morning we are up and moving very early, headed for the Townsville common. There are supposed to be about 360 different bird species there.

Surprise! The road has been graded yesterday. It's a stark contrast to the drive in on Thursday. We can comfortably cruise in at about 30kph.

The tower offers a good view over the open wetland area. At only 30m off the road it is very easy to access. Today there are not many birds.Meer informatie
