  • Junee NSW

    2 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We really only came here for the visit to the chocolate and liquorice factory, but it is a very nice town to visit. The main street is typical of a town of its size with a well presented nature strip. All the necessary facilities and a bonus wetland boardwalk only one block away.

Last visit here we checked out the haunted house. No ghosts that we saw but probably through suggestion I did feel like there could be spirits present. It is billed in the brochure as Australia's most haunted house. A visit to Junee is worth the time.

  • Marrar, NSW.

    2 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Another of those small country town that are gradually declining. This town is well kept and seems to have a great community.

The Pub is quite busy, probably partly the Friday night session but apparently there is a huge raffle being drawn with quite a decent prize.

We are camped in a lovely park quite close to the railway line. We are not expecting too many trains though. It is not grain season and the passengers trains don't run often.

Waking up a little later the next morning with near perfect weather. Beautiful sunny morning with gentle cool breeze. Probably does not get better. The people here obviously take a lot of pride in their town.

In the evening we prepared our food and put it in the Shuttle chef. This clever pot is vacuum insulated and will keep food hot for many hours. This job was simple though. We had roasted butternut and Kent pumpkin and part cooked it.

Only an hour or so in the shuttle and it would be fully cooked. Last step is to simply add milk and use the stick blender to create a lovely pumpkin soup. Power for the blender is from a battery that is recharged by solar panel. We are getting good at adapting everyday devices to run from solar.

Just a quick drink at the Pub we thought. Around two hours later we got back for quite a late supper. We chatted to local farmers who were passionate about what they do. Even had a invitation to have a look at a modern wheat farm next time we stop here.

  • Brewery Flat, Narrandera, NSW.

    3 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We had a very short drive this morning and decided that this camp would do us for a relaxing afternoon. Tomorrow we have another short run as well.

We are literally camped by a billabong. The only thing is we won't be lighting a fire. Our Billy will be boiled on the stove. We have decided to put out the solar oven to cook a piece of corned beef. The sun is out with scattered cloud. I am expecting the oven to reach 160 degrees easily. Solar cooking is a good way to reduce our usage if gas.

The area here is fairly quiet with only the sound of a few cars on the highway a couple of metres away. Cicadas and crickets all around D. Expecting more birds later. The ducks that were here when we arrived decided to move away until they worked out if we posed any threat.

While we were having lunch mother duck and daddy duck wandered out from their hiding place in the reeds with 5 baby ducks. Only 20 metre away they were unconcerned by our presence and roamed around foraging. Eventually they ducked back into the water and swam away. Later they returned a couple of times. Not much cuter than baby Australian wood ducklings. There were also pacific ducks visited not too far away.

Even with a late start we managed to cook our meal in the solar oven today. The scattered cloud certainly slowed the process but there was sufficient energy to get the job done.

  • Jerilderie

    4 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

We had our last camp in NSW on our way to Melbourne, here in Jerilderie. Here it is all Ned Kelly. Everywhere you look, Ned. There is a walk around and Informative boards all around.

The park in down has been well set out and nicely maintained. Since we were here on Sunday there was very few places open.

The camp is right on a river with a short 550m walk to the town. We will return here again.

  • Excelsior 1917 Big X motorcycle

    6 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

The Excelsior motor manufacturering company was number 3 in America. Only Indian and Harley Davidson sold more motorbikes at that time.

Costing $265us this 1000cc bike was trimmed in drab olive with a large X in gold and silver on the tank. It had 3 speed transmission. With its huge motor and solid frame I wonder how painful it would have been to ride.Leggi altro

  • Steam motorcycle at Shepparton Motor Mus

    6 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

I am not sure I would be comfortable sitting atop a steam boiler that has potential to fail catastrophically. This example is a replica of the original, built as closely as the few photos and illustrations allowed.

The original was built by Sylvester H. Roper around 1867-1869. Roper was a prolific inventor who had also made steam powered carriages that had been seen driving around Boston. He also had quite a few patents jointly and on his own.

The steam bicycle had been pitted against professional riders of the day in a velodrome. None could outpace the contraption that had recorded speeds of 40mph. (64kph)

Perhaps the most enduring historical fact was when he died while riding the steam motorbike. The bike started to wobble and he fell sustaining head injuries. A later autopsy found he had suffered a heart failure but it was uncertain if he had died before the fall or not. Either way he was to remembered as the first recorded motor cycle fatality. Since the steam had been turned off there is some thought that he may have realized he was not well.

  • Sustainable Living Festival

    11 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

There were many exhibitors here this year, each with some connection to living sustainability. The pictured lamp has been designed for developing countries to reduce usage of kerosene. There are many heath issues linked to using kerosene lamps in villages. This solar charged light is brighter and safe. It only requires a few hours per day in the sun to recharge its battery.

There were plants, displays, presentations aplenty to keep visitors busy for the 3 day event.

  • Goulburn River, Murchison.

    15 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

We were not certain why the steps here run right down into the water. Perhaps when the river is lower it connects a river walk?

Certainly a nice walk down to take a look at the point where the river crossing punt was. This was a toll crossing. One shilling for a person to cross would have been expensive. 2 shillings for a horse and rider. There were even rates for herds of cattle, sheep and bullock teams.

This point in the river was the easiest crossing for a long stretch so I suppose people wanting to get from one side to the other had the choice of swimming across or paying up.

Those days the technique was to strip down to shorts and pack everything into an oilskin bag or saddle pack. This was secured to the horse and then off you went. Hoses are surprisingly good swimmers and in flood waters will easily swim across a fast flowing creek with a horseman hanging on to their tail.

One might wonder in these days of risk driven workplaces, just how anyone survived day to day as recently as one hundred years ago.

  • Murchison

    15 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

On the trip from Melbourne to Mooroopna, you have the choice of returning through Shepparton or via the small town of Murchison.

Part of the same council as both Shepparton and Mooroopna, this place is very well cared for. The parkland runs quite a way along the side of the river, with businesses along the other side of the road.

The bakery here was very busy normally but while we wee here a bus load of tourists had arrived for lunch. We ate here and then had a short walk over to the river.

One interesting thing we noticed on the way out of town was that there were three churches all side by side. One stop worship for all comers!

  • Coco Bend, Moama

    17 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Perhaps we should have called this our billabong tour. We have often been camped beside water or quite close to nice wetlands.

Here we are camped a few metres from a small lagoon. It looks like an old Lagoon or billabong that has been landscaped when the park was built. Birds are visiting frequently and enjoy the large trees. Ducks often fly in and do an exploratory run looking for interesting things to eat.

Not having any requirement to be connecting to 240 volt power definitely has its perks. We are away from the main van parking area yet still handy to the amenities. Today we are collecting some solar power to run our washing machine.

  • Campaspe River, Echuca

    18 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Echuca is the area where 3 river systems connect. The Murray River from the alpine country makes it way down to the sea near Adelaide SA. Here it is joined by the Murrumbidgee from the North East and the Campaspe from the south.

Right on the high bank Campaspe, the Echuca branch of the Beechworth bakery is located in one of the old buildings. Here one can enjoy a coffee and breakfast while gazing over the river from the back deck at the bakery.

This morning is different though. On the bakery balcony there is a band playing. Part of the Riverboat Festival peripheral entertainment, we are being treated to some pleasant music while we relax with our breakfast. Soon we will head back over to the main festival area to enjoy the last day of entertainment.

The Riverboat festival has been completely booked out this year for the second time since its beginnings. Anyone thinking about coming here for this audible treat needs to book tickets and start planning early.

  • My wife thinks I'm asleep

    18 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

I am sitting here in the warm afternoon sun, listening to music sung in native tongue. I don't speak this language so I can only imagine.

Love of place, love of family, love of country. The culmination of 80,000 years of survival living in the harshest country on earth. A massive explosion of technology that bewildered an ancient people.

Now they adapt to modern music and add a new experience. A group of very talented musicians creating a backdrop to a crowd pleasing sound.

Stanley Gawurra is a great indigenous artist from Melbourne. Originally he was living at Darwin.

  • Yarrawonga

    20 febbraio 2018, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We decided to stop at Yarrawonga for breakfast. The park here is very nice and this morning the temperature is almost a little too cool.

Visiting children must love the water area which features splash area and water slide. There are good walking paths that seem quite busy with people out and about walking dogs.Leggi altro
