  • Escadaria Selaron

    10 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Selaron Stairs are as crazy as the man who made them, seemingly.

Selaron himself was a Chilean born painter and sculptor that travelled around to 50 countries by selling his art before finally found home in Rio.

He began painting the steps in the colours of the Brazilian flag, plus red for his love of Formula 1. Constantly running out of money, he would sell his paintings to fund his now obsession with renovating the steps. Gathering tiles from contruction sites and other waste areas around the city originally. Then as his work became more recognised, tiles begun to be donated from over 60 countries in the world.

He said "This crazy and unique dream will only end on the day of my death", and that was what happened when he was found dead on the steps in 2013. 215 steps measuring 125 metres (135 yards) long, which are covered in over 2000 tiles.

Featuring in Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful", as well as U2 also filming there. This is clearly a work of passion, and as busy as it looks, it was actually relatively quiet compared to the high season.

  • Cristo Redentor

    10 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Another (New) Wonder of the World crossed off our list. Good thing they keep changing the list or we'll run out soon.

Christ the Redeemer standing at over 700m high he definitely has a remarkable view up there. Facing towards Meccah, he overlooks Rio itself. You are able to look up from almost any point, and unless there is a building in the way then you can see him standing there a top the mountain.

To get up there, there are multiple ways, but the easiest by far is the air-conditioned panoramic train that we took which winds up the mountain side for 20 minutes. Then, take an elevator to go up instead of the 200+ stairs. Our guide Maria knew all the tricks. We were first on the train, first in the elevator, and first to stand there with the other few hundred people all trying to take the perfect Instagram worthy picture.

Then the Cuppachino monkies came over to visit. Crawling over the side of wall at what appeared to be a terrifying fall, they were perfectly at peace showing off to the cameras.

We were told, not that I researched this, but originally it was not going to be Christ. The reason why he is called Christ the Redeemer is because Princess Isabel that we learned about in Petropolis was named Isabel the Redeemer for her actions on abolishing slavery. So the statue was going to be in that place. But she said no to that and there was only one person who deserved that place.

  • Fogo de Chão Botafogo Restaurant

    10 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Brazilian BBQ, in Brazil! One of the best restaurants in Rio. The kind of restaurant where the waiters fuss over you in-between bringing around big metal rods of juicy bbq meat to cut freshly off and into the plate. Big buffet salad bars are the norm here, is not your average sizzler though, everything looked so delicious.

I say looked, because unfortunately this is where I began to feel sick with stomach cramps. I only got to enjoy a few bites before we decided to leave.

  • Beach Walk and Marius Restaurant

    10 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Come for the experience, stay for the food.

Walking along Copacabana beach at night, people packing up day mode and moving into night mode. The beach was still alive with partially clothed beautiful people. We enjoyed the walk as the sun went down until the end of the path and turning back towards our restaurant.

Marius is unlike anything I've been to before. Every inch of the restaurant (and it's big) was littered with decorations. The ceiling, the walls and even the floor.

Sitting down they put a little flag on the table that represent the counties of the people dining at that table. I'm not a flash guy, but looking around there were definitely some I didn't recognise.

This too was a type of Brazilian BBQ, except it included seafood too. Prawns, calamari, fish, octopus and then also the meats of steaks and even wild pig ribs.

The bathroom was an experience on its own. I've never taken so many pictures in one bathroom before. Gravel on the floor, rocks in the sink, big chest like locks on the cubical doors, a wooden toilet and ice in the urinal. I was fascinated.

  • Sunrise at Vidigal Favela

    11 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

"That guy gives me the shits. He's got a 9mm and a walkie-talkie and he thinks he's tough."

That was the first sentence from our guide through the favela after getting out off the taxi in reference to a guy standing near us asking where we're going. Welcome to a Rio Favela. Just after hearing the story of a shoot out that morning where the taxi driver lived, a young guy shot in the head. What were we doing!

What we didn't do was warm up our legs, as we headed steeply up a road and then up a set of stairs into our guide's home. Meeting his wife that had been cooking all morning, just for us. As we get to the third floor of this home, the view opened up to this ironically million dollar view of Rio. There were sat and waited for the sun to rise by ourselves while we feasted on pancakes, bacon, fruit, fruit salad, cheese, ham, bread, strawberry juice, coffee, yoghurt, eggs, and pastries... Looking at each other and laughing as we say "what is even happening right now?!"

After breakfast it was time for the tour of the favela. This Favela was on the side of a relatively steep hill. Limited government services and amenities around. But the people on the windy thin streets going about their day, off to their day of work. Truely the backbone of the city but without the minimum living standards you'd expect from your government to provide.

Our guide Henry had lived in the favela for 12 years and was an activist to the community, one of the reasons why I wanted to go with him. I knew my money was going to bettering the community, not just pictures on my phone and a tour companies pocket.

We were taken to a community garden, reclaimed from a trash pile they turned this into a beautiful area of plants and pond. Not to mention the view.

Rounding out of the garden we walked up some stairs back towards the road. Just before we arrived a man came running in front of us from the street into a side ally beside us. Hanging off his shoulder a type of SMG or Uzi. Moments later we see why, as a police vehicle rounds the corner in the road.

Continuing the path through the houses on top of houses we talk about the problems and issues causing the favelas. Sanitation being one of them, as we enter a grade 1 and 2 school to the smell of raw sewage from the storm water drain beside the school.

No building code required here, as we see the fresh slapped together brickwork holding these places together. How they even stay standing makes you wonder.

We entered into a area that someone had dedicated a lot of time to make as beautiful as possible for the kids. Because the rest of the places was no where you'd want your kid to play. Brightly painted walls with art and a little playground.

Inside Vidigal is a tiny church. A church that was going to be knocked down, but before the area became a favela it was visited by Pope Benedict. He said the area was too beautiful to knock this church down and blessed it by leaving his papal ring. I wonder what he would say if he saw it today.

Cutting through an area, there were a bunch of guys sitting around. Casually saying good morning in Portugese as we walked though like it was completely normal. But each of them holding assult rifles and one of them even had two walkie-talkies, so I knew he must have been important. Later to find out he was recently made #3 on the heirachy because he took out the previous #3 for doing a poor job. Just another guy for that guy it seemed, since apparently he already had 50 to his name. Who knows if it's true or not, but it makes for a good story. The only thing I knew was true were the guns.

How good was that sun rise though? Lol

  • Jardim Botenico

    11 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Botanic Gardens of Rio de Janeiro was a huge place. Starting through the huge cactus garden with some species that were very crazy looking and three huge sheds filled with different species. Thinking of my sister as I walked through. Insectavore species had a little glass house with the different varieties.

We sat down to drown ourselves in water. It was so humid that day. But that is the moment I started to get more sick.

Walking towards the orchid house, we sit a few more Cuppachino monkies playing. The orchid variety was huge and most in flower it seemed. I big range of colours, red, yellow, white and blue.

We had to call it a wrap at that point, I was in too much pain and wanted to head to the hotel. But we did take them long route to go through as much of the park as possible.

  • Carnaval Experience

    11 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A behind the scenes tour of how Carnaval is organised inside a huge area called Samba City.

Samba City is a huge area of warehouses dedicated to the top league of Samba Schools who scored the highest points in Carnaval.

These huge warehouses are where the floats and costumes are designed, prototyped, built and rehearsed.

Because they had already started the building for next year's floats, no photos were allowed in that area. But we went up to see the area they had put together that contained last year's costumes and designs for that school.

We got up close and personal to the experience because we booked it private. Learning about the time line for the year, the history, the culture

But that's when we got too up close and personal, they dressed us up in some costumes for a photoshoot. Before attempting to show us the basics of the Samba before two professionals came out to dance with us. In that moment we realised just how much of middle aged white guys we are. Yes there is a video, no it will never been seen.

  • Rio Star

    11 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

I always forget how afraid of heights Alex gets until we board something like this. The Rio Star is easily twice the size of the Brisbane Wheel. With a great look over the city from the top. Extremely slow, it works it's way around as the sun set behind us.Baca selengkapnya

  • Boulevard Olímpico

    11 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Continuing our movements down the port area it contains the world's largest Street Art.

This area was revitalised for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games so that it could show off the cultural diversity of Brazil with concerts and events.

Walking all the way down to the huge Museum of Art that sits on the waterfront. Capturing it just as the orange and purple of the sunset hit against the side of it. Giving us a moment to stop and enjoy the view while we reflect on how impressed with Rio we are with everything we've seen and done so far.

  • Afro-Rio Vibes and Pedra do Sal

    11 September 2023, Brazil ⋅ 🌙 24 °C

Each of the places we visit we learn a little more each time. The history and cultural development over time in South America is amazing. Tonight was to enjoy the vibrancy and festivity of the Afro-Rio community here. Meeting in an area by the docks where the slaves from Africa were off boarded from the Portugese colonist boats. Today it's filled with colour, loud music, food and drinks.

The statue to welcome us to this street is Mercedes Baptista, the first black woman to join the corps de ballet at Teatro Municipal.

When we arrived it was still early, and it would have been much busier if we left when expected. However at this point I was feeling too unwell and we had to cut it short. But we walked through the streets, had a drink and something to eat as we listened to the music.

We sat at a bar beside Pedra do Sal. The birthplace of Samba. It is a rocky hill which served as the meeting place for Afro-Brazilian to get together and develop the music and the dance. Tonight it is where people would sit and watch on the steep hill and enjoy the happenings of the night.

As we were leaving we noticed people walking around selling food labelled "Brownie Magico". Unfortunately I don't speak Portuguese so I'm not sure what it was.
