    Off to Alice again

    May 27, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    After Fiji trip.
Left Melbourne this morning after spending the night at Ben's place. We picked up Lauren from Jimmy's as she was catching a plane back to Woollongong too.
We also dropped off hire car then Steve flew back to Flinders this arvo.
Got into Alice at lunch time, settled into hotel Aurora, got some groceries to take out to Utopia then chilled out in room.
It was quite cold when I got off the plane.

    The big drive

    May 28, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I get picked up from hotel at 8am by Ian from RAHC. He was the driver who drove me out to Ampilatwatja last year and he remembered me 😊.
A bit of a chilly start but clear blue skies.
We drive about 3 hours up the Stuart Highway to turn onto the Plenty Highway then to the Sandover Highway. Stuart and Plenty are sealed but the Sandover is dirt until you get to Alparra then it is sealed again for about 20 km to the Urupuntja Health Clinic at Utopia. It then turns dirt again. Road conditions were actually pretty good.

When we get to the clinic we introduce me then find my accommodation to unpack. I'm in the Nissan Hut!! I have lunch then spend the afternoon doing orientation. All staff here are lovely and friendly. Lots of new staff, some on contracts like me, some here for 3 or 12 months. I think I'll like it here.

    Visiting outstations

    May 29, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

    First day doing proper work.
A permanent nurse and midwife Melinda and I go on an outstation run today. Utopia services many outstations and every day 2 cars go out and see people there. Most of them are old bores from when this area was a working station. Each car usually has 2 nurses and another nurse stays at "the big clinic" to see pts there.
Melinda was great continuing to orientate me and to work with. We take all gear we need, medications and laptops to use Communicare software offline. Each outstation has a small she'd used as a clinic.
We went to Mosquito Bore and Kurrajong today. Was great and we were back to clinic by 1.30. After lunch we saw pts and more orientation check offs.

  • Utopia explained

    May 30, 2019 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Named Utopia by German settlers in the early 1920’s, the lease to Utopia Station was sold in 1970s by the Chalmers Family to the Aboriginal Land Fund Commission and in 1978 the station was claimed under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976.

The traditional owners of the Utopia region were displaced from their lands into overcrowded remote communities and fringe camps of major towns during the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1970s, however, they gained freehold title to their land and returned to it, adopting a dispersed way of living in 16 outstations spread over 10,000 square kilometres of country. In re-establishing themselves on their traditional lands, the people of Utopia also set up a community-controlled primary health care service, Urapuntja Council Aboriginal Corporation to provide health care to the outstations.
Located 270 km North East of Alice Springs, Urapuntja (Utopia) clinic provides health services to the Eastern Anmatyarre and Alyawarre people who are the traditional owners of the land.

The larger community of Alparra, 10 kilometres south of the Utopia Clinic, has a store that sells the usual items found in a small community supermarket, along with hot take away food. Alparra is also where there is a police station that serves the region along with a primary school & a campus of the Batchelor Aboriginal Institute.

Outstation populations can vary from 20 to 100. The Utopia Clinic is situated 10kms north of Alparra & is its own small community with housing available for clinic staff & a small clinic school, which is a primary school whose pupils are drawn from the health workers families of Utopia & some of the surrounding outstations. Be very careful of feral horses, camels, cattle & donkeys when on the road.

Utopia has an extreme desert climate. Summer is hot and winter nights very cold. Utopia is a dry alcohol region. This applies to everyone, including visitors

    Getting into a routine

    June 4, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Spent the weekend just chilling, watching movies, sorted photos.
2 of the nurses and I have started going for walks around here at about 5.30pm each day.
Our work day is 9-5, loving the 9am starts!!
Yesterday and today I was rostered in the "big" clinic here at Urupuntja to see pts that walk in.
Tomorrow I'm back on the road to out stations.

    Mosquito Bore and Kurrajong Bore

    June 5, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Gemma and I get out of the office today and do some outstation visits. The same ones I went to last week with Malinda.
Bitterly cold today though, getting those cold snap wind's from the East. Had to wear my coat and put the heaters on in the mini clinics.
After work, another walk with Angela and lovely sunset.

    Mulga Bore outstation visit

    June 6, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Today is a big drive down to Mulga Bore, it's half way back down to Alice, nearly back down to Plenty Highway. Once past Arlparra , it's the sandy, rocky dirt road again. High 4wd was good to stop slipping around and still travel at a decent speed.

Suzel and I was rostered on to do this today. I was excited as I like a good drive. Suzel has been doing a lot of on-call and getting call out's at night so was a bit tired and asked me to drive 👍👍. Loved it.

It was a bit quiet to start with but ended up giving about 10 flu jabs. This camp is a friendly good community. The 7 kids who go to school here are going on an excursion to Sydney next week.

When we got back to clinic, the Police were there as there was a mental health Evac in progress. They were saying the Mulga Bore was overrun by horses but that they all died at a dry bore. There was 1 horse we saw and the dogs were having a good yap at it.

    Alparra

    June 6, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Suzel and I popped in on our way back to visit the 3 nurses and doctor from Utopia visiting this clinic today.
We also popped into the Store.
I noticed AFL is a big thing here too. It appears most outstations barrack for their own team. There's the Arlparra Dockers, Kurrajong follows the GWS Giants, Mulga Bore support the Pies, Soapy Bore goes for the Carlton Blues.Read more

    On-call weekend

    June 10, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    I've been on-call since Friday night- 1st on-call Friday, 2nd Saturday, 1st yesterday and 2nd today. You do 2nd on-call after you've done a first.
We have also come out of our cold snap and now back into high 20's. Either weather the pesky little black flies are a nuisance.
Sunday brunch at Dave and Melinda's to farewell Suzel who leaves this Friday. Suzel is originally from France, has done a lot of humanitarian work, now lives in Sydney and has got a job there organising remote Evacs and another humanitarian role too. Lovely lady. She'd been here 3 months but was ready to move on.
Over weekend, I've been doing a long stitch and sorting through Fiji photos and finishing that Penguins blog.
We've had some lovely sunsets and rises. And I've now seen the horses!!!

    Back on the road

    June 12, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Yesterday I was rostered in the clinic so saw pts in there all day.
Today Suzel and I were rostered to go out to Apungalindum and then Aniltye (Boundary Bore) outstations.
Apungalindum is a small one and no-one was there. Further down the road is Boundary Bore and most of those had left "for the shop" but we did see 7 people. A visiting dietitian, Ingrid, is here this week and she joins us for a while.
    Hot again today.
