  • Vimy Ridge Visitor Centre, France

    26 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Today we visited the Vimy site. Our first stop was the visitor centre. The staff consists of Canadian university students who are their for 4 month shifts. They are incredibly friendly and wonderful to talk to as we understand everything they are saying (no accents). Right away we toured the trenches and tunnels. The trenches have been rebuilt but are in the exact locations and formations We saw both the Canadian trenches and the German trenches as well as "No man's land" in between. The tunnels were the most interesting. We came out of them right where the Canadians would have come out to fight in the middle of no man's land. The visitors centre was new last year to the site for the 100th anniversary of the battle.Baca lagi

  • Vimy Ridge Memorial, France

    26 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

The Vimy memorial was very impressive and we had a beautiful day to see it as it really stood out against the blue sky. It wasn't as big as we were expecting based on what we had seen on TV. There were not too many other people there and we were able to go all over it basically on our own. As it's a very bright white marble and it was a bright and sunny day you had to be very careful. It made the large steps all over it very hard to see. We were very impressed and felt incredibly lucky to be able to see it.Baca lagi

  • Givenchy-en-Gohelle, Cdn Cemetery, Franc

    26 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This is a Canadian WW1 Cemetery that is located right at the edge of where John Kennedy fought at Vimy Ridge. We had to hike in to it. Along the way we were seeing craters in the woods from the bombings much like in the Vimy park. We also spotted 4 barbed wire posts left in the woods. We reached the cemetery and it was incredibly well maintained. We continued hiking further as Doug was hoping to spot landmarks and find some shrapnel balls. He had no luck but we did find poppies growing wild.Baca lagi

  • Givenchy-en-Gohelle, France

    26 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This village is right beside Vimy and it's a village that shows great appreciation for the Canadians. There's Canadian flags flying around the town and they put maple leaf stickers on everything from their garbage pails to their mailboxes.Baca lagi

  • Les Boves (caves), Arras, France

    27 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

There is a cave and tunnel system under the village of Arras dating back to the 1100's. It was very interesting touring and hearing if it's various uses throughout history. Of special interest of course was the fact these were part of the system that housed 24,000 men during WW1. This meant all these men went undetected by the Germans. When it was time for the battle they all poured out of various entrances right in front of the unsuspecting Germans and they won the battle of Arras.Baca lagi

  • Place des Hero's, Arras, France

    27 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This is the Grand Place and Place des Hero's. Basically the town squares of Arras. We were lucky and hit market day. The foods in the booths were amazing. Much of the buildings were destroyed in the two world wars and then rebuilt. There's still bullet holes in the columns. John Kennedy spent a day during the war in one of the buildings in the Grand Place.Baca lagi

  • Anzin-Saint-Aubin, France

    28 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Today we made a special point of visiting the small village of Anzin-Saint-Aubin as 100 years ago to the day, Doug's Great Grandfather was in this exact same village serving as a soldier in WW1. What a special occurrence!
Although not able to pin point exactly where in the village they were billeted, we did see the church he attended. We also tried to see the river they swam in while they were here but it now runs through the middle of a golf course.

  • Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery, France

    28 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

The Commonwealth War Graves Cemeteries are extremely well kept and beautiful. This one is called Cabaret Rouge. It is a rather large one with more than 7,650 soldiers buried here. We have included a picture of the headstone from the unknown soldier who was removed from this cemetery and now lies at the War Memorial in Ottawa.Baca lagi

  • Hill 70 Memorial,Loos-en-Gohelle, France

    28 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We were looking forward to this stop as it's a new memorial (dedicated by the Governor General just a year ago) and honouring a lesser known battle that John Kennedy participated in. It was a terrible disappointment. It is completely overgrown, we almost couldn't see a bench because the weeds were taller than it was. The parking lot has also been blocked off with big cement barricades.Baca lagi

  • Hill 70, Loos-en-Gohelle, France

    28 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

This was rather interesting. Doug had pinpointed the area where John's specific battalion fought in the Battle of Hill 70. Part of it was woods and part was farmers field. We decided we would go out into the field to look for relics from this battle to go with the Vimy relics. We saw someone else out there as well and figured they doing the same thing. It turns out it was the farmer and he finds things all the time. I am not even going to tell you what he offered us. Needless to say we refused as we are certain it's a big no no on a plane.
After our scavenger hunt, where we had luck again, we headed to a Subway which is part of a shopping complex now located on the same land John was fighting for. It is right on what was the German lines.

  • Beaumont-Hamel, France

    29 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

This is a really nice site to visit. We did a tour with a Canadian guide from Newfoundland. Her Great Uncle was killed during the battle here. The site was full of British teens on school trips and Doug felt like he was in a Harry Potter movie.Baca lagi

  • Fenain, France

    30 Jun 2018, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

This is the village John Kennedy was in on the day the War ended (armistice day). We strolled around. There's pretty brick work and it happened to be market day.. It was very interesting to be at the market Saturday morning, in an out of the way village in France.Baca lagi
