Yellowstone National Park Day 1
17 luglio 2021, Stati Uniti ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C
Not sure how to feel about this, but the pandemic has stopped people from other countries to visit our national parks, so we didn’t see any tour buses, which means even Old Faithful was not that crowded.
We made sure to leave early from our hotel from Yellowstone West, a tourist town right outside the park’s west entrance. The morning temperature was about 40 F, I was so glad I did my research before coming here and we were fully prepared for 40 F morning and 85 F afternoon. What we did was: wearing a pair of long pants over our shorts, and wear a light winter jacket on top of a T-shirt. As we were walking around comfortably in our cold-resistance attire, people in shorts were shivering around us. 😉🥶
We waited about 30 minutes for the Old Faithful to erupt, but it was so worth it!! The power of nature was truly a magic sight! And then we climbed a hill next to the Old Faithful (climbing on a 8,000 feet altitude hill is no joke!), and watched it erupt again!
Can I offer another suggestion here? Go to the picnic area before noon! Since I like to do my research thoroughly before I visit anywhere, I took an excellent suggestion from an article that suggested we pack our own lunch in order to avoid crowds in the few restaurants in the park, and it worked out great! Seeing all those people waiting outside of the restaurants proved we did the right thing. However, another great thing we did was to reach a picnic area around 11:30 AM, so we were able to eat our lunch in a quiet forest settings, before the crowds showed up around noon.
After lunch, we head to Yellowstone Lake. The lake is 136 square miles, a huge body of water inside of the park. The geyser area the lake is called West Thumb, because the section of the lake looks like a thumb of the lake (and it’s on the west).
we then went to Biscuit Basin that’s also covered with many unique geysers, and 2 of them erupted right in front of us. It was awesome!! At the end of the boardwalk, was a a very lovely hiking trail to Mystic Falls. Almost the entire hike was accompanied by a crystal clear river, with beautiful wild flowers on the banks. A nice water fall at the end of the trail rewarded us even more beauty of the nature.
The best thing about going to the park early was how much crowds we had avoided. On the way out of the park, we had seen so many overflown parking lots, and the road to Old Faithful was completely jammed!
Since we have 5 days in Yellowstone National Park so we will have plenty of time doing many things, we left the park around 3:30 PM when the park was super crowded.
After a bit of rest in our hotel room, we went out for Chinese food! I’ve decided to try a restaurant called Red Lotus, and was very surprised how good the food was! Even to my very picky Chinese taste buds, the food exceeded my expectations! Highly recommended!
A successful first day!Leggi altro

2019 Australia Trip - Day 12
6 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌬 12 °C
Today is Evan’s 14th birthday!! We were picked up from our hotel really early in the morning, started 6 and 1/2 hours tour bus ride back to Ayers Rock. The tour guide Jordan happens to be Rita’s boyfriend, and had learned about Evan’s birthday from Rita. So he suggested everyone on the bus to sing happy birthday song to Evan in everyone’s native language. There were people from at least 5 countries represented on the bus, so the song was sung in French, Chinese, English, Dutch, Swiss German. How awesome is that!!
We arrived at our hotel before noon. The big celebration of Evan’s day has just begun.
After a nice lunch at the town square, we joined the camel tour.
When we arrived at the camel farm, we saw a line of camels arranged in a perfect line, sitting quietly and patiently for us. Evan and I rode a camel called Hugo, Steve’s camel is called Buddy (nick name is psycho! He is the only camel that has to wear a mouth guard). It was a bit startling when the camel first stood up, because it’s so tall. But we soon got very comfortable riding it because it walked so calmly and slowly. Our tour guide walked alongside of us, taught us a lot of fun facts alit camels. Do you know Australia has the biggest wild camel population in the world? Australia camels also maintained some good qualities through the years, that the Arab camels had lost, so the Arab countries actually import camels from Australia sometimes.
The most exciting events are coming up!!
Tonight, there were 4 events planned with Ayers Rock Resort - Night of Field of lights program:
1) We had drinks (Steve had several glasses of champagne; Evan and I had soft drinks) and hors d’oeuvres with sunset over Uluru rock
2) We had 3 course meal with fantastic Australian food. Our table mate told the event organizer about Evan’s birthday, so everyone there (about 80 people) sung happy birthday to him. Evan was so embarrassed. LOL!
3) They turned all lights off, so we were engulfed by darkness and silence. Then an Astronomer came out, gave us a fun talk about Southern Hemisphere stars and constellations
4) A walk through the Field of Lights! There is no words to describe how cool this art installation is, so I will just give you some facts:
- the artwork is made up of 300,000 individual components
- over 380 km of optical fibers is used
- 50,000 individual handcrafted delicate lights stems covering an area of over 49,000 square meters, equivalent to over 7 football fields
Standing in the darkness, looking up, you see thousands of brilliant stars twinkling; look down, you see a field of lights stretching to the horizon! The lights change color every 6 to 12 seconds, seems to have a life of its own.
The time seems to be frozen as you lose yourself in the awesomeness of the perfect conversion of nature and art, and the truth of “forever and always” creates a sense connection between the ourselves and something larger than life. This is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had!
This concludes our time at Outback, since we are leaving for Sydney tomorrow.Leggi altro

2019 Australia Trip - Day 11
5 giugno 2019, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C
After a much warmer sleep last night while wearing 4 layers of warm clothes, I woke up super early, under a sky full of stars! We left the camp site by 6 AM, heading into King’s Canyon.
Today, we hike the rims of the canyon. The entire hike takes about 3 hours.
It started with a very difficult climb up a steep hill called “heart attack hill”. Evan, with his young legs and excellent health , climbed way ahead of us. The rest of us huffed and puffed our way up. We were greeted with a magnificent view of the canyon and land far beyond. Blue sky, red land and greens extended all the way to the horizon.
We then continued on for hours, admiring the beautiful rock formations all around us, and hiked to a calm waterhole that’s surrounded by large vegetation called Garden of Eden. I have to say my daily workouts paid off here since I was able to keep up with Evan, climbing up and down on many, many rocky hills. Winter wind chilled our faces, and bright sunshine warmed our backs. We hiked fast and efficient, with no one else but our camping group behind us.
Next leg of the trip is far more boring, we basically needed to drive 5 and 1/2 hours to Alice Springs. The vast Outback landscape stretched in front of us, on and on. However, we did stop for a bathroom break. Rita told us every tree is a loving tree, feel free to relief yourself around it. LOL! I think this is the first time I heard a tour guide encouraging us to relieve ourselves outdoors!
We stopped at a small town on the way to have lunch. There is an Emu enclosure here. While trying to feed them, Evan’s finger was bitten! Fortunately nothing serious.
After a long drive, we finally arrived at Alice Springs!! We will sleep in an actual bed tonight! Woohoo!
There is some mishaps about the hostel the tour group booked for us. So we decided just book a much nicer hotel - Doubletree hotel here for tonight instead of sharing room with strangers. Private bathroom too! What a treat after roughing it for the past 3 days!Leggi altro

Well, sleeping outside on the dirt ground with just the Swag in Outback winter is not my thing. It’s so, so cold!! At first I was using my winter jacket as a pillow, but after being waken up by the cold wind too many times, never able to be warm enough to fall in sleep, I figured I could wear it instead Have you ever try to put on a winter jacket inside a sleeping bag? Not easy! I then put on my socks too. Felt some warmth after that. Finally fell in sleep. I dreamt I was Jackie Chan’s manager, had to take him to hospital after he got hurt doing stunts. Is it wired!? I guess I was really stressed.
Woke up too many times throughout the night, hearing the snoring. Steve was snoring up a big thunder in my right, Evan was snoring up a small thunder in my left, I was raining tears in the middle. I was so jealous of them that could sleep to soundly!!
Finally time to get up at 5:30 AM. We then headed back to Ayers Rock to see the sunrise and have breakfast. It’s truly a majestic sight! As the sun slowly risen, the sunshine slowly turned the rock into bright red. Amazing!
Next, we climbed a mountain called Kata Tjuta. Steve and Evan chose to do a more challenging climb that’s 4 km longer distance than the rest of us, and I stayed with the rest of the group, worried abut my heart problem, and didn’t want to slow them down. They hiked the whole 4 km of rocky road in one hour!
The best thing about this hike, besides the fact we were surrounded by red mountains and blue sky, is the fact there was no flies in the morning. Steve had a much time because of that.
But the flies returned after noon. Fortunately we were just driving to King’s Canyon which is about 2 and half hours away. And on the way there, we stopped at a small town, bought our own flynet (a net cover your whole face to keep the flies away)! YAY! Never thought we would be this happy to buy some nets!
Did you know billions of years ago, Australia has a huge inland sea? There are still many salt water lakes remaining in the Outback area. It’s kind of cool to see a large body of water in the middle of the desert!
We gathered firewood for tonight’s camp fire. As soon as we arrived at Kong’s Canyon camp site, we started a big fire.
Upon learning about Evan’s 14th birthday is just 2 days away, Rita and couple other ladies gathered some local fruits, baked an amazing birthday cake with the camp fire! The entire camp group gathered around the fire and sung happy birthday to Evan, who was completely surprised by all this. Pretty amazing birthday celebration!!
Another night under the stars deep in the mountain! This time I am prepared! I am wearing a shirt, a sweater, a vast and a winter jacket before I get into the swag. Should have a warmer night with all this preparation.Leggi altro

F*#king flies!! Pardon the language, but I’ve never seen this many of flies in my life!
Our trip to Ayers Rock (the largest rock on earth) will forever be remembered as the place that has millions flies!
Too bad we were not prepared for them. Some people got flynet which keep them from your face. As for us, if you stand at one place for a minute , the flies would cover you from head to toe! They invade every inch of your body and you face, in your eyes, nostrils and even ears! It’s absolutely horrific!! You have to keep your mouth closed too, because they will fly into it if you don’t.
Steve was so miserable that he said this is one of the worst experiences he has ever had in his life!!
However, the Ayers Rock was magnificent! The red rock towering over us against the blue sky, absolutely beautiful!
We walked around the base of the rock, trying hard to be less annoyed by the flies. But the more you sweat, the more you attracted the flies. People told us, summer time there are even more flies!
Our camping guide/driver/chef Rita provided some excellent introduction to the native stories and cultures. The natives were the first people ever made bread! Thousands of years ahead of the Europeans.
We all helped out Rita with dinner preparation and washed up. Veg noodles stir fries and curry chicken. After hours of walking, we were all hungry and tired. Everyone inhaled their dinner!
Tonight, we sleep in this thing called Swag (kind of like a bigger sleeping bag) which is placed directly on the dirt ground, with no tent, and nothing cover our head.
Billions of stars are blinking over my head. The Southern Hemisphere has different stars than northern ones. We will have the chance to learn all about them in a few days.
I am hoping for a good night sleep, and no poison bugs visiting overnight!Leggi altro

Woke up by the chirping of the tropical birds. Stepped out to the balcony, gazing into the mountains and the greens in front, with gentle breeze on my face, I felt at peace.
This tree house is the best property we have ever stayed! With its open floor design, the living room and kitchen open directly to the balcony. There are no exterior doors! I was a little startled when the owner didn’t give us any keys, but since there are no doors against the nature, there is no need to lock out the everything the nature has to offer. The property is well hidden by the rainforest; since it’s opened a decade ago, no one but the guests have visited here.
There are 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and can sleep up to 10 people (more if people willing to sleep on the huge sofas around the house). There are only 3 of us here today, so the space feels huge. It has a swimming pool, a hot tube and a BBQ. The entire house is elegantly decorated, you can tell the owner has some excellent tastes! With the principle elements of Zen and Peace, perfect combination display of Eastern and Western arts, you truly feel like you just stepped into a piece of paradise!
Steve made sausages and eggs, I made oatmeal and tea, we had our breakfast at the dinner room which occupies a corner of the massive balcony. A couple wild turkeys and many birds busied themselves in the forest... we felt like we were part of the nature.
Evan and I jumped into the hot tube after the breakfast. It was so nice and warm! But Steve dragged us out of tube and “forced” us to get the day started.
Nearby our house was a beautiful waterfall called Crystal Cascades. A very nice walkway took us all the way to the top of the waterfall, about 0.8 mile stroll. Too bad the water was too cold for a swim.
Next, we drove all the way to downtown area for a farmers market that only opens on weekends. Some tasty street food totally filled my belly. We got some ingredients so dinner can be prepared at our awesome kitchen tonight too.
Tomorrow, we fly to the Outback for our camping trip. Not sure about the Internet connection there and if I will be able to upload my travel journals. We will see.Leggi altro

ViaggiatoreNo keys?!? How do you lock your stuff up? (Maybe I've lived near Chicago too long lol)

Today we went to the oldest Rainforest in the world called Daintree Forest. The drive on the coastline was absolutely lovely! We crossed a river that’s full of crocodiles on a river ferry! Too bad we were not allowed to be out of the car, so we could take a closer look.
We arrived at Daintree Discovery center, and took some nice walks in the rainforest. Went up to the canopy tower that had a nice view of the top of the forest, and learned a lot of fun facts about the plants and animals. As we were leaving the center, we drove to the wrong direction and had to make an u-turn. After the u-turn, we suddenly saw a car’s headlights! It’s driving directly at us! Steve suddenly yelped “I am driving on the wrong side!” The Australian driver politely waited until we corrected ourselves and drove on.
Continue on to go deeper into the forest, we passed by an ice cream shop called Floravilla. Let me tell you, this is one of the best ice cream shops in the world! All ice creams were made by hand by an old lady named Betty Hinton, and all flavors were so unique! She made them with local fruits and herbs. I am pretty sure some flavors are not available anywhere else in the world except this very shop! The shop itself is also a garden, with beautiful native flowers surrounding us while enjoying some really amazing ice creams! How awesome is that!
Next, we went to a boardwalk to a beach. Steve got lost a bit, drove in circles a couple times. Just as we were laughing about it, 2 cassowaries suddenly apparently on the side of the road! Cassowary is a native Australian bird that has some very unique lifestyles (as we just learned at the Discovery Center). The female bird usually lay 4 eggs. After she laid them, she walks away and continue enjoying her life of party. It’s the male cassowary spends 80 days sitting on the eggs until they hatched. Then the Dad will bring his kids around with him for the next a year and half! What we saw, was the rare sighting of a Dad and his chick! Poor guy has to bring his kid with him while trying to find mate. Good luck nice bird!
Next, we headed to Jungle Surfing - zip line through the rainforest! One fun thing about this zip line is that in order to get to the first canopy, someone has to run in a giant human hamster wheel to get the line moving. Evan had a lot of fun doing it. As we zipped through the forest, the super knowledgeable guides also showed us many cool things to see. Very nice!
We were finally heading to Cairns and plan to check into the coolest property of the world: a treetop house in the jungle. The owner waited for us to arrive, and showed us around.
Let me just say this: there is no word to describe how cool this massive tree house is. When we first lay our eyes on it, our mouths didn’t close for at least 10 minutes!! I will try to describe it in details tomorrow, since it’s late now, and we have all day tomorrow to fully utilize everything in here.
Dinner was 15 minutes drive away at a place called Red Beret Hotel. A very interesting place that’s a hotel, a sports bar, a casino, a kid’s playground, and a fantastic restaurant! Saturday night, many locals were here.
Evan ordered a 18’ hotdog, and didn’t quite finish it. LOL!
Finally! After a full day of activities, time for bed!Leggi altro

We boarded the Quicksilver cruise ship in the morning, after an hour and half, we arrived at the renowned Agincourt Reef, which is at the very edge of Great Barrier Reef. A step away from where Nemo separated from his Dad by grabbing a boat, and brought back to Sydney (for the few people who haven’t seen the movie, this is a scene from “Finding Nemo”).
The Quicksilver Cruise actually has a pontoon in the middle of the ocean, which is perfect for me since it’s far more stable than a boat, less likely more me to get motion sickness. And since it’s off season, only less than 100 people are on the boat instead of 400 of its capacity.
Steve and Evan were scheduled with 2 dives, and they started one soon after we arrived at the pontoon. Steve later told me, they saw a lot of fish hiding in and around the corals; countless species and many different sizes. Both of them have Go Pro attached on their wrists, so they took a lot of videos! Can’t wait to see them!
By myself, I took the submarine ride twice, and had a full lunch (poor Steve and Evan didn’t have much lunch, because by the time they finished they dives, most food was gone!).
Dinner was at an excellent Vietnamese restaurant. A nice big bowl of pho was exactly what I needed!Leggi altro

Today is a travel day. We got up early for our flight to Cairns, didn’t realize how fast and efficient Sydney security line was. By the time we reached our gate, we had an hour to spare!
As soon as we landed at Cairns, we could feel the warm breeze on our faces. It sure was nice to leave Sydney’s 40 degrees weather behind.
Show time!! Steve was going to drive on the “wrong” side of the road for the first time! It felt wrong when we got into our rental. Everything was backwards! Even the seatbelts were buckled on the wrong side. Steve kept mistaking windshield handles for turn signals handles, so every time we needed to turn, the windshield started swiping. I think the locals could tell the tourists apart simply by the frequent windshield actions. LOL!
The drive from Cairns to Port Douglas was absolutely gorgeous!! The coast line was dotted with white sandy beaches. The hour drive was like driving in a paradise.
Once we arrived at Port Douglas, Steve felt a lot more comfortable driving on the wrong side.
Our apartment has 2 bedrooms with their own bathrooms, a nice kitchen and a balcony. The beach is just a 2 minute walk away. Everything is absolutely perfect!
Steve and Evan spent the afternoon swimming while I was chilling on the beach. A relaxing and calm day today.
Big day tomorrow! Steve and Evan are going to go scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef!Leggi altro

We finally got our luggage now! Steve was tired to wait around and went to airport himself instead waiting for them to deliver them. He was shown to a room that had about a hundred misplaced luggage. He immediately found ours, and brought them home. So glad he did that because with so many bags that needed to be delivered, who knows how long we would’ve waited.
This is the last day in Sydney for us, and we had a lot of activities planned.
The first thing we did was climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge! This activity allows us to climb to the top of the bridge, scale about 1,400 steps. What made this experience even more memorable is the fact it’s super windy today. At the top of the bridge, the wind reached more than 55 miles per hour!! I don’t think I ever experienced a more windy situation in my life. Our guide said this is the most windy day for him as well.
Fortunately we were all well prepared. The company gave us jumpsuits, beanies, gloves, fleece and of course, safety harnesses. Even though the wind was threatening to blow us off the bridge, we actually felt very safe.
We then walked to the Sydney Opera House, joined a guided tour to see the back stages and all theaters. Our tour guide absolutely loves this building! His enthusiasm was fantastic! We had the chance to learn all the history behind this amazing architecture marvel, saw the inner works at the back stages.
We actually ate at the fancy restaurant instead of the opera house. The food was among the best we’ve ever had! Check out the desert! Shaped like the opera house!
Sadly we are leaving this wonderful city tomorrow.Leggi altro

First of all, an update on our luggage situation. They have finally arrived in Sydney now! Unfortunately, they need to be inspected, which could take up to 48 hours!! We are leaving Sydney on Thursday. So we will see if we can get them before we leave.
We had a very active day today!
We joined a small group tour to go to The Blue Mountain. Our driver/guide is a super fun true Australian. He actually calls you mate, and says crikey , full of bad jokes and fun stories. Really likable guy!
Blue mountain is absolutely gorgeous! We took a cable car across the a beautiful valley, then the world steepest rail train which angled at 52 degrees (Evan loves the thrill of it)! After a nice walk in the rainforest, we took another cable car with a view of a canyon larger than the Grand Canyon!
Traveling in Australia in winter time can be good and bad. The good thing is that since it’s not a peak season, there are a lot less people around. The bad thing is the fact it’s COLD! Especially on top of the mountain! The bitter cold wind chilled me to the bones.
As we were waiting for lunch at a fantastic hotel restaurant, Evan noticed there is piano in the hallway with a sign reads only pianist is allowed to play. Evan went to the manager and asked to play. She said go ahead. So Evan sat down and played Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Everyone was stunned with amazement! I was surprised how much he could play without the music sheet.
Here are the links to his performance:
https://youtu.be/o4BOR1t8-EQ
https://youtu.be/9fN5SJE-_NU
Next stop, a wildlife park. What an exciting place! We took pictures with a koala bear, fed some friendly kangaroos (their have really soft tongues and fur! I could feel their teeth when they generally ate food off my hand. At one point, I was feeding 3 kangaroos all at once! So cool!), saw dingos and many, many different types of birds. Evan’s knowledge on animals is astounding! He can often name those animals before we read the information on the fence. What a little know-it-all! But I was happy to see how excited he was the entire time we were there.
A nice river cruise took us back to Darling Harbour. Dinner was at a Chinese Noodle restaurant where they make noodles by hand. Excellent food!
By the way, when we are the buffet at Sydney Tower yesterday, we actually ate kangaroos meat and emu sausages. Emu sausages looked like roasted potatoes, and we were all surprised they are weird tasting meat when we bite into them. LOL!
We had a truly wonderful day today!!Leggi altro

2019 Australia Trip - Day 2
27 maggio 2019, Australia ⋅ 🌬 20 °C
Well, after 16 hours of flying, we are finally in Sydney! Unfortunately, our luggage didn’t come with us. After spending more than an hour with Qantas Baggage Service, with them calling both Kansas City and Dallas airports, we discovered our bags are still in Dallas!! This is the 3rd day we have no change of clothes!
Since we have no idea when they can send our bags to us, the first thing we have to do in Australia is to shop for underwear, socks and shirts at Target! How frustrating!! When that’s done, we are finally starting our sightseeing.
To kill 2 birds with one stone, we took our super friendly Uber driver’s advice and had a nice buffet lunch at the top floor of Sydney Tower Eye, the tallest building in Sydney. The food was fairly good, however, to continue our bad luck streak, the rain started. The top floor rotate 360 degrees, so we can see the whole city while sitting at our table, but the rain affect our view a bit. Fortunately the rain didn’t last long. By the time we finished our lunch, the rain stopped.
Walking among hundreds and hundreds of people on the street, we marveled how bustling the city is. On our way towards Darling Harbour, we saw many shops and restaurants lining the streets. Cutting through the vast Hyde Park, many interesting looking birds caught our eyes. Looking closely, we realized they are ibis. They are acting like pigeons! Not afraid of human at all.
The famous St Mary Cathedral towered over us soon after we started walking. It was a beautiful and majestic culture landmark! Although the Chinese tourists elbowed Steve at the door. The site wasn’t even crowded! I guess they were just so used to do this, they don’t even realize how rude that is.
Kept walking, we soon found ourselves looking at the famous the Sydney harbor dotted with giant robot sculptures (transformers alike). Very cool indeed.
Next stop, the Maritime Museum. We visited a tall ship that’s modeled after a captain Cook’s ship, a submarine and a destroy ship called Vampire. Evan was so happy, checking out every corner of all the ships.
Considering we arrived Sydney at 6:30 AM, and had to rush to every place we visited, everyone agreed that we needed to go back to our Airbnb to shower and rest.
And that’s exactly what we did. Hot shower! How nice!Leggi altro

Day 1 - Dallas
25 maggio 2019, Stati Uniti ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C
A major thunder storm delayed our flight from Kansas City by more than 2 hours, therefore caused us to miss our connection in Dallas. Instead of spending a day in Sydney, we have to stay in Dallas today.
We didn’t realize the airline doesn’t comp weather related delays, waited in a long line of people needed to reboot their fights, only to be told we have to find our own hotel. Since we already paid our Airbnb in Sydney, and tonight’s lodging is VERY expensive! And we lost a precious day in our trip! So frustrating!!
Well, we will try to have a good time in Dallas today. Since we are all dressed for Sydney’s winter weather, and we are not able to retrieve our suitcases, long pants and shirts are not well suited for hot Texas day. Our plan is to go to the Art Museum and stay inside with air conditioning.
The first stop is Nasher Sculpture Museum. Nasher Cafe by Wolfgang Puck is located inside of the museum. Don’t be fooled by the casual atmosphere and simple menu of the restaurant, the food is actually really good! My salmon salad was so light and tasty!
The Sculpture Museum itself has a well designed landscape, and some exhibit pieces are very interesting. However I do like the photo I take of Steve and Evan trying to figure out if the “Do Not Touch” sign is a exhibit piece or not. LOL!
Across street is the Dallas Museum of Art. I like the fact the Museum is free to the public! Steve commented the Ancient art from China (from 5,000 years ago) is better than art from Ancient Rome. I think it’s nice Steve appreciates Asian Art so much!
Dinner is at a nice Italian restaurant. We all stuffed ourselves since we don’t know when is our next meal.
Back to the airport, and boarding the exact flight 24 hours late.Leggi altro

Day 6: Wuhan/Shanghai
22 novembre 2018, Cina ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C
Another day of yummy street food for breakfast! We finally able to order the right food at the correct amount. It’s nice when there is no leftovers.
Since my mom wasn’t able to walk too well anymore, my brother and I simply sat around her and talked all morning. With so many memories to share and discuss, the time passed quickly.
The farewell luncheon was at the same restaurant we ate the first day we arrived Wuhan. My mom was getting more and more sad as the Luncheon progressed. By the time to say goodbye to her, we all had tears in our eyes.
Once again, we took the high speed train back to Shanghai. Less than 4 hours later, we once again arrived at this magnificent city.
The Airbnb apartment we rented today is in a modern high rise. It has 4 bedrooms, 2 bedrooms and even more stunning view than the last apartment! The apartment is very spacious and the decoration is very tasteful. If the last apartment gave us a taste of how a middle-upper class Shanghainese lives, this apartment gives us a taste of how the very rich lives. Too bad we only stay one night here.
Back to the States tomorrow!Leggi altro

Day 5: Wuhan
21 novembre 2018, Cina ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C
Instead of having the boring hotel buffet for breakfast today, we chose various street food. Our rule is trying out the stall that has longest line. It didn’t take long for us for find such a stall, a line was constantly forming in front of this noodle shop. Steve and I got the Wuhan sesame sauce noodles, and Evan got spicy tofu noodles. I told the cook to make Evan’s noodles extra spicy and he delivered. Evan said it was one of the most spicy things he’s ever eaten! We also got a spicy meat pancake that’s cooked in stones (basically a layer of dough cooked between hot stones), which was very tasty.
We then headed to Wuhan university. I had lived my whole life right here by the university, went to Middle school, High school and university here. The hill in the middle of the school was part of my playground. I had climbed this hill for so many times, had my first date with my first boyfriend at the age of 15 in this hill, shared our first kiss here. There are so many beautiful memories!
For the first time in 20 years, I climbed this hill again. Nothing much changed, which is so rare these days in China! I recognized the stairs, the rocky slopes, the large holes that are likely fox holes during the war with Japanese, the forts that are long abandoned. I absolutely loved the experience!
Walking around the university campus, the posters are advertising a large event to celebrate 125 years anniversary for the school. As one of top 10 universities in China, this school is also one of the oldest and biggest. Our 2 hour walk hardly covered 20% of the school.
I was happy with the fact the school seems greener than 20 years ago, but sadly the outdoor movie theater is now a parking lot. Although my brother said they still show movies occasionally (just need to ask the cars to move out first). A small forest near the school grand entrance had been turned into a park.
The more I walked, the less I recognized.
I am glad I will always have Lujia Hill, the only place remain unchanged in China for me.Leggi altro

Day 4: Wuhan
20 novembre 2018, Cina ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C
We started the day with a buffet breakfast at the hotel, then headed to the Yangzi river ferry boat with my brother and mom. My father’s ashes were spread near the intersection of Han River and Yangzi River, which is in the path of the ferry boat ride.
I used to take this ferry boat ride every day when I worked at the other side of the river. My commute consisted of a long bus ride from home to the river, then a ferry boat ride to the other side of the river, and then another long bus ride the other side of the river. One way trip would take me 2 hours!! Just recently, I had a nervous dream about not able to catch the bus to get to the ferry boat on time. Clearly this 4 hour commute still haunts me to this day.
We arrived to the other side of the river, and visited a Wuhan history museum. I was happy that Steve and Evan had the chance to learn a bit more about my hometown.
Wuhan holds a significant role in the history of China. After Opium War between Britain and China in mid-19th century, the Western winner of the war forced China to open its ports to allow the Opium trade (mainly for Britain to dump massive amount of Opium to China and made millions of Chinese drug users), Wuhan was the port that reached furthest inland for the Westerners. The city was then divided 5 ways among Britain, France, Russia, Japan, and Germany. The unfair treatment of Chinese by the foreigners caused deep unsettled feeling in the city, and a death of a paddler caused a uprising which resulted in a massacre.
10/1/1911, a revolution to replace more than 2,000 years old feudal system with a republic of China started in Wuhan, which lead to the overthrow of Qing Dynasty. It became the first Capital city of the Republic of China. Then during WW2, it was captured by Japan, became a major port for Japanese Amy’s transportations. After WW2, 8 years of civil broke out, this city was once again a major battle ground due to its significance in transportation.
After the Communist Amy won the war, Wuhan was once considered as the Capital of the New China, but they decided to choose Beijing instead.
OK, end of the history lesson, back to the journal.
My sister in law met us after our visit to the museum, with several bunches of white and yellow chrysanthemums. We then went back to the ferry boat, feathered at the tail of the boat. Once the boat started moving, we each took some flowers, and throw them into the river in remembrance of my father.
Stood against the railing, I cried.
I remembered when I was about 5 years old, my dad held my hand walking towards an outdoor theater to watch a movie. The moon was full, the summer night was hot, he was reciting a famous poem about the moon to me, and I recited back to him. I kept looking at the moon, wondering why the moon kept following us.
I remembered one morning when I was a teenager, my dad forced me to get up early in the morning to climb a hill with him. The morning dew wet the bottom of my pants, the mist made the air cooler, waking me up from my sleepiness. Once we reached to the dirt trail at the middle of the hill, he started practicing his Tai Chi, and I started with my run against the rising sun.
I remembered when I was preparing for my college entrance exam, I was studying none stop for many, many days. My dad saw my exhaustion, and took me for a walk against the sunset. We talked and talked, until the moon rise.
The boat arrived, l said goodbye to my dad.
At night, my brother and mom came to my hotel room. We talked until midnight, about my dad. After sharing many memories, we concluded that my dad was a flawed man, but a good man.Leggi altro

Day 3: Wuhan
19 novembre 2018, Cina ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C
Sitting on the balcony with some really yummy street breakfast food (varies fried dough and hot soy milk), enjoying the Shanghai magnificent skyline right outside of our apartment window, was the highlight of our trip in here.
This Airbnb apartment is walking distance from subways, the Bund and Nanjing Pedestrian Street, which we took full advantage while staying here. I think it was really neat staying among the Shanghainese. A lady took interest in my family when we rode the elevator with her. She asked do you live here. I said no. She asked are you a guide for the foreigners. Before I answered she already concluded that no, that’s your son, right? I said yes. She then said your husband is very handsome!
Generally people are curious but polite.
Shanghai Railway station, according to Steve’s research , is the biggest railway station in the world with 1.3 million square meters!
The high speed train only took 4 hours to bring us from Shanghai to Wuhan. We thoroughly enjoyed our first class seats with spacious chairs, large clean bathroom and nice services.
It was an quiet and emotional reunion with my mom and brother. No tears, just a lot of talks about my father’s memorial service. We will be visiting his burial site in the river tomorrow.Leggi altro

Day 2: Shanghai
18 novembre 2018, Cina ⋅ 🌧 11 °C
Today is the only full day we have visiting Shanghai. We started the day with some really tasty soupy Potstickers. These little dumplings had soup inside and crispy bottoms. So yummy!
We then headed to one of the biggest pedestrian street shopping centers in the world called Nanjing Road. You can find most of the fancy shops from all over the world and Chinese company flagship stores. Occasionally some shady characters would come up to Steve (seeing he is foreigner) and offering Rolex watch in poor English. I still remember I once bargained with a lady years ago near here. She offered Rolex for $10, I asked if she was willing to sell me one for $1, she was so offended that she walked off in anger. No such drama today; Steve simply walked away without saying a word.
We walked through a really big Lego store here. The LEGO displays in this store are massive! They must’ve used hundreds of thousands legos for them! Very impressive works! Next door is one of the very fancy Starbucks that only serves reserve coffees. Steve ordered a pour over and said it’s delicious.
Next stop, Yu Garden. This tourist site used to be the home of some very wealthy people in history. It’s originally built in 16th century, then continually being added with more elements throughout the history since. It’s a really big garden in the middle of this restless city, like a little calm oasis in the middle of constant chaos. The garden is built with many, many twists and turns, with beautiful flowers, interesting rock formations, ponds and tiny bridges. You simply have no idea how big the garden is when you first walking in. Then every corner of this garden offers more details, every turn offers a different displays of beauty. We enjoyed this site very much!
Next stop, the second tallest building in the world, called Shanghai Tower. Due to rain and lower hanging clouds, we didn’t go to the observation deck because it’s in the clouds. So we walked through a massive underground system that offers many more fancy stores and restaurants, and then arrived at the famous Pear Tower.
Since Peal Tower is Lower, we decided to go up. It offers 3 levels of observation decks at 360 meters, 296 meters and 250 meters. When we reached the highest level, it’s surrounded by thick clouds, we had to wait for breaks in the clouds to see out. The second tallest level was a bit more clear; we could see many high rises and had a nice view of Shanghai. The lowest level, which is still really high, offers glass bottom view, meaning you would stand on the clear glass and look straight down. People with vertigo should definitely not to attempt this.
Dinner was at a restaurant called Xingdalu, a one star Michelin Star restaurant. This was the first time we went to a Michelin Star Chinese restaurant, and the food was indeed really, really good. Their attempt to reinvent tradition dishes was very successful. For example, a simple Mapo tofu had some really nice abs mild fish fillets in it, brought some tender sweetness to the spicy dish. The pork belly dish was magnificent!
This amazing meal brought our day to a perfect ending !Leggi altro

Day 1: Shanghai
17 novembre 2018, Cina ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C
Visiting China for this Thanksgiving Week, and Shanghai is our first stop.
Several years ago, we took the maglev train( Magnetic Levitation train) when we had a stopover in Shanghai but never exited the station. This time, since we plan to spend a couple days here, we took the train again. With the speed of 435 mph, we arrived our destination in 7 mins! So cool!
Instead of staying at a fancy hotel, Steve booked an AirB&B apartment. Since it’s located within a normal apartment building, finding it among hundreds of apartment buildings proved a bit harder than a hotel. Fortunately the owner gave us some pictured instructions. It’s kind of neat to live among 21 million Shanghai residents for a couple days.
As soon as we walked into the apartment, we were at awe when we looked out of the window: a magnificent Shanghai skyline displayed right in front of our eyes!
Exhaustion didn’t stop us from heading to the Bund, and check out the skyline up close.
After a satisfying Hotpot dinner at a famous restaurant, we walked alongside thousands and thousands tourists towards the Bund.
The Bund is a very unique site: this waterfront area was the Chinese headquarters of most major financial institutions from all over the world during the colonial period, so there are many historical buildings at this side of the river. But if you look across the river, you will see one of the most impressive skylines in the world! Many architectural achievements are displaying their glories in colorful neon lights, welcoming visitors from all over the world.
The stark contrast of the sights perfectly demonstrated the 2 Chinas: the old colonial China in Shanghai was once famous for the signs on its buildings read “Chinese Native and dogs are not permitted to enter”; the new China that has the development speed that is unmatched in the history, is changing the skyline of this city in daily basis, showing off the enormous economic power.
After coming back to the apartment, with the ever changing neon lights from the high rises in my eyes, I have to say I am proud of my motherland.Leggi altro

Day 5: Singapore

Day 5: Singapore
This is our last day in Singapore. We focused this day for fun activities.
We first went to a VR Game Center called Virtual Room. Utilizing the latest VR technology, we were trying to save the mankind by going back in time to destroy world ending elements. Each of us was in an individual small room with our VR headset and 2 controllers. Once the game started, we could use the controllers to pick up items, throw items, using bow and arrows. As a team, we visited several times in history: Egypt, prehistoric time, medieval time and moon landing. We were transported virtually into the space together and could see each other, interact with each other. The experience was truly magical! I am proud to say that working together, under Evan’s leadership (he was so good at solving puzzles!), we destroyed the evil and saved mankind! You are welcome!
Lunch was at a hawker center where the most famous Singapore chicken rice dish is located. Anna told us usually by lunch time, the line for it is out of the door. We went there super early and didn’t need to wait in line at all. I liked it a lot but Steve and Evan thought it was just ok.
Afternoon, we went to an obstacle course place called Forest Adventure. Steve and Evan had a lot of fun walking on ropes, balancing on planks and zipping across the trees. I couldn’t join them because my foot still hurts from when I injured it back in January. The boys likes it a lot, Calling it challenging and fun.
Thanks to Jody Havens’ suggestion, we went to a Chinese restaurant called Seafood Paradise, seeking a dish called Chili Crab. The crab was really fresh, and the sauce was really tasty. Another great dinner for the last day.
Have to head to bed early tonight, and going to Wuhan tomorrow.
I think Facebook is banned in China, so this may be my last post for this trip.Leggi altro

Day 4: Singapore
Today’s main mission is the Singapore Zoo. We took Anna’s advice and went there in the morning.
Despite what we heard about the greatness of this zoo, Steve and Evan were reluctant to come because they hated to see animals in cages. Well, guess what? For a lot of animals here, there weren’t any cages! We walked into the zoo and saw a lemur causally sitting on a tree right in front of us! Walking in further, several monkeys were swinging on vines right above our heads! We were so delighted to see them out in the open without being confined!
After several hours of watching the animals shows and seeing many animals, we have concluded that this zoo is indeed the best in the world! Unfortunately the food in the zoo is still just as bad as other zoos.
We came back to the hotel to rest for the afternoon, and finally swam in the famous rooftop infinity pool. What a view, what a luxury, what an experience!
Dinner was at the famous soup dumplings restaurant called Din Tin Fung. I had always wanted to eat their soup dumplings but never had the chance until now. After taking one bite, I understood why it’s so popular. The dumplings were perfectly made and extremely tasty! Highly recommended!
After dinner we headed back to the zoo and joined the massive crowds in the Night Safari part of the zoo. There were so many tour groups here that everywhere we went had a lot of people. We waited in a queue for a very long time to get in the tram to see the animals. I have to say that it’s worth the wait. We saw a lot of animals that normally would be sleeping during the daytime. Now at night, they were so much more active! I never seen a tiger pacing around before.
Another wonderful day in Singapore!Leggi altro

Day 3: Singapore
We met with Anna again today, to check out more unique places and neighborhoods.
We started our day with an amazing tour of a unique museum called Intan. Alvin, the owner of the museum also lives here with his family. Started at the age of 7, Alvin became passionate about leaning his Peranakan (this unique culture started about 200 years ago when the Chinese men married Malay women) heritage, and he found he could do so by collecting antique pieces. The Peranakan families speak English at home, follow Chinese traditions for holidays, weddings and funerals, but follow Malay culture for food and clothing. The fusion of different cultures created some very interesting antique pieces that combined all 3 cultures. From our conversations with Alvin, you can tell he is very proud of his heritage, and very passionate about preserving it, which displayed in every corner of his house. After some traditional home made tea and treats, we left the museum/house with big smiles on our faces.
We then visited Little India, the Bugis Street and the Malay center. It’s so strange to step into The Little India, it transported us back to India! The smell, the color and the people, were exactly same as what we saw when we visited India. Same can be said about the Bugis Street too. I thought I was back to China already! Right next to the Malay center is Arab Street with a masque, and the very next street over is one of the most trendy places in Singapore with bars and live music.
Only in Singapore where you could be placed in a different cultures just a few blocks away!
However, the absolute favorite thing for today is our dinner. The restaurant is called Nox - Dine in the dark. What an unique experience we had at this restaurant! Everything about it is top notch with attention to detail. The food is amazing, the service is full of caring and gentleness, a truly must do experience if visiting Singapore.
We were greeted by our downstairs server with a warm smile, and he took a note of any dietary restrictions from us and served us drinks. We then put our phones and watches into a locker so nothing would create any light on our body.
A blind waiter then slowly lead us to upstairs, which is completely pitch black! You truly can’t see anything! There were 3 course meals, each meal comes with 4 dishes. You supposed to eat from the 6 clock position, then move to 9 clock, 12 clock and 3 clock positions, to consume all dishes. The challenge was actually when I need to pour water out of a bottle into my glass.
When we were not able to see what we were eating, our sense for tasting has heightened a lot. Everything tasted so much more intense and delicious. I especially loved the steak and fish dishes.
Through out our dinner, we were guessing what we were eating. After the meal, they gave us a sheet of paper to test how much we could taste. Believe or not, we got more then 80% correctly. The waiter then displayed all the photos of our dishes, and explained every ingredient in the dishes. It’s so much fun!
Another interesting day in Singapore!Leggi altro

Day 2: Singapore
We met with our tour guide Anna this morning. She is a proud Chinese Singaporean, who has vast knowledge of the history and architecture of this amazing city.
We started our tour with a Temple in Chinatown, where seamen preyed for safe passage when crossing the ocean to reach Singapore for the past hundred years. There is one very unique thing in this temple that you won’t find it anywhere else in the world. There is a figure on the beam that’s holding up the roof, it supposed to be a British person. Because when the British East India company colonized this city in 1800s, they were the much hated overlords of the common people. Having this British guy holding up the roof in a very uncomfortable position was a subtle way for the people to show their hatred.
Food is super important for this city. Due to its diversity of different cultures, the food here are a wonderful fusion of many flavors. The best places to experience this are the many hawker centers in the city. We visited 4 of them today and tried 8 very different dishes. Oh my goodness, everything we ate tasted amazing!! I was so full at the end of the tour I had to cancel our dinner reservation for tonight.
I don’t know if you have heard of a fruit call Durian. People call it the King of Fruit here. It’s famous for its bad smell when opened and unique tasty flavor. Under Anna’s guidance, we had the chance to try it out. We had to hold our noses before we put it in our mouths, and try eating it without smelling it first. Only after we took the first bit were we allowed to use our noses again. Well, I have to say the taste is indeed very interesting, I cannot even describe it because it tastes like nothing I had ever eating before. After I took the first bit, I didn’t experience any bad smell. I guess Anna’s advice really worked! Will I eat this fruit again? Maybe.
Another very unique thing about Singapore is their public housing. 80% of people lives in public housing here, and they are the nicest apartment buildings in the city! Rich, Middle income and Poor people all living together at the same space. The only difference is that the rich people can afford to buy the unit and the poor people need to rent it. But the living conditions are exactly the same!! What a truly innovative way to offer equality among everyone!! Anna said we are going to learn more about the process more in our tomorrow’s tour. Can’t wait!
By the way, the public housing apartment building picture I showed in the post has the 2 levels of outdoor gardens (one at middle and one on the top) in the building. They are the largest in-building gardens in the world!
The more I learned about Singapore, the more I fell in love with it!
The day ends with a wonderful music and light show at the Garden by the Bay Supertree Grove.Leggi altro

Day 1: Singapore
After a very nice breakfast buffet at the hotel (the pancakes they served were all precisely same size and really yummy), we walked to the beautiful Garden by the Bay park.
The Flower Dome in the garden is a lovely botanic garden that has unique flowers from all over the world, and the Cloud Forest features a very tall indoor waterfall and a winding walkway through the vertical rain forest.
We then crossed the river on the pedestrian bridge that double helix shaped, towards Singapore Flyer, the massive ferries wheel (one of the biggest in the world!). From the bridge, you can also see our hotel and the art museum at a nice angle.
The view from the Singapore Flyer is very similar to the view from our hotel room.
Steve and I then visited a Fish Spa, where you put your feet in the pool, allowing the fish to eat the dead skin off your feet. At the beginning I screamed a bit because it’s so ticklish when the fish were nibbling my feet. But after a while, I got used to it, and started to feel very relaxing. My feet feel so smooth afterwards!
After a longer than intended nap time at our hotel room, we went to Candlenut, a restaurant specializing Strait-Chinese cuisine, very unique Singapore food. The food was very good and the deserts (all 5 of them when eating their tasting menu) were even better! Check out the gold on top of my tiny bit size cake!
The plan of visit the rooftop infinity pool was canceled after realizing how tired we all were. Heading straight to bed after an amazing day!Leggi altro

After 16 hrs of surprisingly pleasant flight (Singapore Airline is truly the best!), we arrived at our hotel: Marina Bay Sands.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marina_Bay_Sands
This hotel is legendary and massive! With hundreds of shops, restaurants, theaters and rooftop infinity swimming pool! We actually saw a show about this hotel at the Travel channel once, never thought we would actually stay here one day.
Hotel room is big, the bathroom is really nice, love the balcony overlooking the bay as well.
This is our home for the next 5 days. Can’t wait to jump into the famous pool, and explore the city tomorrow.Leggi altro
