  • Wyndham township WA

    16 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

Do a drive around - stopping at points of interest. We start with The Big Croc, then the Warriu Dreamtime Statues. Then the "Biggest Boab in captivity" at the Caravan Park (nice and tidy, good facilities). Next we go and check out the Fishing Jetty and Boat Ramp.
Wyndham Museum has so much to look at I've given it it's own 'footprint. Drive past the Meatworks Train display and The Residency Ruins (no photos taken), before heading back into the town area to the Wyndham Oasis Cafe. We buy drinks, cappuccino for Rog, Noah's fruit juice for me, and 4 fried dimsims to share $27 - phew pricey. Now driving back towards Kununurra- going to drive along King River Road just out of Wyndham. Hoping we can 'loop' onto Gibb River Road and check out Pentecost River crossing - this turns out not to be.

    16 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

Started off on this 4wd road happily to check out some noted points of interest from our tourist information sheet, but also hoping it would join us onto the Gibb River Road (giving us a loop back onto the Victoria Highway). Turns out that it would via The Karunjie stock route (extreme 4wd track) - just not happy to tackle this on our own on a 40° day (which it is at this moment). Will have to tackle this one another trip - hopefully have company.
With our in and back trip (70km at least) we get to see Proposal Falls (dry), Moochalabra Dam, Aboriginal Rock Art and the Prison Tree.

We park and walk in to the swimming spot - it's beautiful. There's already a young couple swimming here so we just take some photos and head off again.

Anyway we retrace our steps and go to another walkway that takes us to a good vantage point to lookover Kununurra.

  • Spring Creek Rest Stop

    18–19 sep. 2024, Australien ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

This rest stop can be used for overnight stays, and is just near the entrance to the National Park that is home to the Bungle Bungle Range, so we find a spot to unhitch and leave our caravan while we go check the Bungle Bungles out. Roger deflates the ute tyres to 24psi before we head off.
We return around 4pm to find our caravan exactly how we left it, and plenty more 'neighbours' as other campers have been arriving. Roger gets busy, reinflates the ute tyres and mends the ute awning, as one end come loose on the corrugated gravel road today (held it in place with a tie down strap to get us 'home'). I set out our chairs and enjoy some drinks. We both have showers, then have leftovers for tea. Cold silverside and salad for Rog, mince pasta (reheat in saucepan) for me.
Now just relaxing until bedtime - Rog reading, me writing this up.
Well, we're still waking up quite early thanks to time change, get up 6.30am and have leisurely breakfast. Both eating our porridge outside at a table near our caravan when I notice a corella hanging around nearby making some noise. On watching 'him' he flys to a wood 'knot' on a close tree, and to my surprise and delight I realise he's visiting another corella sitting in a hollow in that 'knot'. Unfortunately I didn't have my mobile to take a photo of them together - could tell the sitting one happy with the visit. I took a photo before we left - when 'she' just sitting quietly by herself. We do our tidy up, pack up and we're heading off from here by 8.00am. We're just going to drive today, and see if we find somewhere appealing to stay on our way to Derby....

Going to do the 53km gravel 4wd road into the park's information centre. Then go from there to Piccaninny to do the Cathedral Gorge walk as suggested in my book 'Top Walks in Australia by Melanie Ball'. This book a gift to me from Robert and Stacy - makes me happy using it! Roger drives us in, I do the drive on the way back out. We have our lunch once we arrive at Piccaninny - there are sheltered tables to use. Roger has cold mince pasta, I have some cold silverside and an apple.
We are lucky with the weather today - normally at this time of year it's too warm at this time of the day (midday by the time we start the walk) - today is overcast and mild.
Enjoy this walk with Rog (he's good to walk with 🥰) and the scenery is stunning. Such a different landscape. Walk takes us about an hour and a half.

  • Kimberley Entrance CP Derby WA

    19–22 sep. 2024, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

Well we didn't feel the need to stop today - though I did discover Mimbi Caves on the way past - a spot that you are required to pre book to stay and tour, so not on our 'radar' while concentrating on upcoming our Horizontal Falls tour.
We arrive here in Derby - finally find this Caravan Park that we're looking for (I'm driving so Rog navigating 🤣). Book in for 4 nights - to cover our outing with our tour, and as the park is so quiet (end of season) we can chose our own site. We select 43 as it's nice and close to amenities block. We settle in - as it's hot, we enjoy the air conditioner in our caravan. We relax and do not much. Rog reading and I prepare and cook tea with the Thermie - Asparagus risotto tonight. Followed by a shared block of Cadbury chocolate (a $2 bargain - Lamington 😁). Tidy up dishes, then I set up 9Now on our TV so I can watch 'Postcards' as they have a couple of episodes that feature Dunkeld. Now I'm in TV watching mode so Rog and I to bed and I watch a movie on Prime (so bad a pick, though it did make me laugh, I can't remember it!).
Friday morning, sees us happy we're coasting, already here for our Horizontal Falls tour tomorrow. Roger gets up 1st and has his weetbix for breakie, I get up 6.30am and have my porridge etc. We get ourselves ready for a walk, to go check out the main shop area. Off we go around 8.30am, excited to find the Tourist Information Centre open 8am to 2pm. Learn that we should check put low tide and high tide at the Derby Wharf, there's an Art Studio with a Museum attached that is open in the mornings until 1pm - worth a look. Plus good to checkout the sunset with the sculptures that are in place around the foreshores. So that's pretty much what we did for the day. We finished our morning walk - with Rog getting the ute and meeting (I walked of course!) me at the wharf to see low tide. Then went and checked out the Art Gallery - a beauty, showcasing local talent, with a small selection of art museum pieces to check out as well. Next we drive to the Bakery and get pies for lunch - beef curry Roger, chicken curry for me and a Apple turnover to share. Very yummy all of it! We take these back to our caravan to eat, and it's after finishing lunch that I receive a phonecall I wish I didn't have to get.......our Horizontal Falls tour is being cancelled due to the forecast of heavy rain and bad weather (huh....?). I'm quite in shock during this call (disappointed seems an understatement - Roger and I have been so keen for this 'lash out') but I do get that our chance for this type of tour is done for this year - and the day tour is about to finish as well, and not likely to be convenient for us as in Broome....da de da da......
OK we get a full refund of the tour cost - just leaves us coming to terms with the fact we've booked here for nights we no longer need (and clear no refunds policy when we arrived) and we missed a few opportunities in making sure we got here for this tour. Oh well, just got to roll, and know some things just aren't to be! Doesn't stop me sulking for the arvo though! We now 'chill out' for a while - I fiddle with a new purchase from this morning's walk, a Thermacell Insect Repeller and Roger works on the broken caravan door latch (something that happened while Roger was setting up yesterday). When it comes time for high tide (a bit before) we go for a drive back to the Wharf to see - impressive! Back to our van to relax until we drive out again to watch the sunset on the water with the sculptures about the place - really lovely.
Afterwards back to camp and Roger prepares and cooks tea, while I look on the computer for other things we might do - definitely interested in the swimming with Whale Sharks in Nigaloo at Exmouth, getting to the end of their season though too.....so we'll wait and see...
Tea is a sausage vegetable casserole (pkt seasoning) with rice. Dishes get done and Roger goes for a shower (I had mine just before tea), now relaxing, Roger in bed already, I'm just writing this, then planning to update budget books before bed.
The alarm goes off at 4am - to see us getting up, having our breakfast, Roger making sandwiches for our packed lunch, while I tidy up and get organised for our outing to Tunnel Creek. We head off before 5am for the 180km + drive, seeing plenty of kangaroos at this time (hit a small one unfortunately). Planning to do the Tunnel Creek walk and look around the National Parks out this way.
We get back earlier than expected - around lunchtime - to our caravan after our outing to Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge, so we eat our 'packed' lunch in our van. It's got warm now so we're just wanting to keep cool. We relax in the van for a while, then Roger comes up with the plan that we could spend the rest of the afternoon at the Derby Public Swimming Pool. We've already checked its opening times 11am to 5.30pm daily - so we figure this will be the go! So we get ourselves organised into bathers, sunscreen on, camp chairs packed, bag packed with our reading books and snacks etc and jump in the ute and drive to the pool. Huh?? It's not open! We're stunned! Must be something to do with WA long weekend? Though that doesn't really make sense either! Oh well all we can do is head back to our camp site and relax and stay cool there for the rest of the day. Watch some TV in air conditioned comfort, Ghost Busters 2. Tea tonight is reheated leftover sausage casserole followed by fresh fruit salad and yoghurt. Tidy up, have showers, now watch a movie - not bad, then bed.
Sunday morning, I am up before 6.15am as Roger got up at 6am. I decide to go for a 'shuffle' - been a while! I go to the wharf and back - surprises me that this was over 6kms! Have breakfast of porridge with Roger (he waited until I was back) - he's been busy getting us ready to leave for Broome today. After breakfast I go enjoy a shower, then help finish up inside caravan details to leave. We head off before 9am.
Note: we leave after 3 night stay as we got a refund on the 4th we'd booked as no longer required once our tour got cancelled.

  • Morning drive Derby Gibb River Road

    21 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Our early start has us driving towards the sunrise, so lovely watching the sun come up, but having to keep an eye out for kangaroos crossing the road in front of us as well.

  • Bandilngan National Park

    21 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

The home of Windjana Gorge, where we drive past as we head to Tunnel Creek which is in Dimalurra National Park. We are following a couple of vehicles here this morning - so we're obviously not the only ones thinking it best to get our walking done in the morning before it really heats up.
We arrive at the parking area for the Tunnel Creek walk and others are already here. We get ourselves ready for the walk - we're in bathers with shoes on that we're prepared to get wet, hats, Roger carrying his water bottle and I've got my hiking backpack with a few extras in it (sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellant, head torch and a couple of muesli bars).
Once we get to the Tunnel entrance (only a short walk) and discover how much rock clambering involved with lack of light, I realise I'm overpacked with my back pack and my head torch (always been a weak one) is not really giving me confidence to walk in the dark. Roger quickly decides to leave his water bottle and hat near the entrance for collection on the way back. We proceed into the tunnel/cave finding we have to wade in water and tackle the gloom pretty much immediately. We continue through the 1st pool of water and try walking into the next larger pool of water - to find that it's going to be deep enough to have to swim. I realise I'm not happy to proceed as my backpack isn't waterproof and my head torch is not bright enough. Roger agrees as he doesn't have a light - apart from his mobile, and we've no waterproof bag to keep it dry. Oh well, we've enjoyed what we've managed - lots of fun, I hope we can come back and do it fully one day - we'll be better prepared! Less unnecessary gear - and better lighting and waterproof bag (small). Certainly don't need hats or sunnies etc! Head back to our ute and drive back the way we came in, so we can check out the Gorge etc.

  • Tunnel Creek Walk

    21 september 2024, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We only managed a small section of this walk - guessing 150m of an 850m (meant to be 1.7km return). Disappointing, but we just didn't have quite the right preparation! Did get to see a couple of cane toads. Find out later that in the parks they like people to catch them (put in plastic bags and dispose of them). No one was doing this in our sight!
I would suggest for this walk if we can go again - eat and drink before you go (don't worry about taking this stuff with you), no hat or sunglasses required either, wear your bathers (or gear you're happy to get fully wet), reef shoes (or runners OK to get wet), decent head torch and a small waterproof bag for your mobile/camera. That's it!

  • Broome Caravan Park

    22 sep.–2 okt. 2024, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

This caravan park is on the out skirts of Broome, on our way in from Derby. We decide to go with it, as it is so much cheaper than the caravan parks that are right in Broome. We book in for 2 nights $35 per night powered - Jean, one of the owners of the park, is so friendly and helpful - we take to the place immediately! Jean chose a site for us 156, and told us we were welcome to ring her on the provided number if we saw elsewhere free that we'd prefer. This happened, and we selected and got site 154 (more shade and closer to amenities). We settle in, then realise it's lunchtime and we require some bread. This means our 1st trip into Broome to get some groceries. We have a little drive around the main shopping area before we chose to go to Coles. Get our groceries then go for a drive to find the RSL. We do and we call in for a drink and book ourselves in for tea tonight. Next drive back to our caravan, unload groceries and have lunch. Meat and salad rolls. Time to go utilise the pool. Very relaxing afternoon spent at the very nice pool. Showers, spruce up and go out for tea. RSL Club roast night. Roast served by one lady from a bain marie - good plateful and delicious. After our meal and a few drinks, we go back to our van - relax until bedtime.
Wake up abit before 7am - Roger gets up and has his breakfast muesli, I get up and get ready to go try a class of yoga - held Monday and Thursday 7.30am beside the pool. Roger decides to come along too $5 each for a 60minute session. Simone, the lady who does the yoga. very good instructor - even though Rog and I novices, we felt we had a good workout for our bodies and minds. Once this class finished I go back to our caravan and have my breakfast muesli and yoghurt and get in my bathers ready for a swim. Roger is doing some caravan maintenance- checking the wheels and their bearings, I enter a team into the RFDS Oceans to Outback October fundraising challenge. Have called the team For Mint Condition and pledged to raise $500. So far the team made up of myself, Roger, Stacy and Gabe - Rog and I have pledged to walk 96km in the month of October. Good motivation to keep moving. Rog and I go for a quick dunk in the pool before we have lunch - raisen toast and apples. Then after lunch we decide to go for a drive to see what we can do on a public holiday here. No, Moontide Distillery not open today (normally is on a Monday) , yes Matso's Broome Brewery is. Then go driving checking out some of Broome's beaches.
Return to our campsite around 4pm, for Roger to put on a lamb roast in the Weber Q. I make up a bread and butter pudding - so it's ready to cook later (leave it in the fridge for now). Roger has been to the pool for a refresh while I did the dessert, so now I go to the pool while he gets the vegetables for tea sorted. I stay at the pool, chatting with other campers, until 5.30pm pool close time. Go have a shower, ready in time to make the gravy (instant powder) for the lovely roast. I cook up the pudding in the airfryer - not sure about the look of it, but it tastes good. Dishes get done, Roger has his shower. I get on the computer and pay some bills (water rates). Relax until bedtime.
Tuesday - wake up to a wet caravan park with water puddles laying around as it rained throughout the night. I decide this is a good enough excuse not to do the clothes washing as planned - it can wait until tomorrow, weather is going to be dry (still warm of course). We're happy to have a 'rest day' - so we just have a lovely day at campsite. I catch up with Sharon and Stacy via phone calls - all good. Some swims in the pool when felt like - only outing is to drive to Cable Beach in the evening to watch the sunset (also to pick up Roger's old Akubru hat that we left behind yesterday at Cable Beach House). Once we get back we have leftovers (roast lamb etc and pudding) for tea, then have our showers, watch "The Beekeeper" movie on Prime before sleep time.
Wake up early (as we seem to do!) have our breakie. Washing priority this morning, so get 2 loads done and hanging out to dry. Then get ready to go into Broome for the morning and get out it's shopping areas. When we drive in and park in one of the main streets, we can see some police activity going on - obviously got someone/s they are trying to catch up with. Thankfully this doesn't interfere with our browsing - Rog and I do our 'own thing' agreeing to meet up for morning smoko. I prioritise collecting my Specsaver glasses that have been posted from Palmerston to the Broome Post Office - do this no hassle. Then enjoying looking in shops, end up purchasing a few gifts, some toiletries and a cute pair of sandals (dress up casual style) for me. Roger and I have a lovely drink and snack together at Dragonfly Cafe (on a main corner) - pancakes and cappuccino for Rog, citrus tart and 'green goddess' fresh juice for me. Continue our separate look about town until we've had enough. It's late lunch time now so we decide to drive to Spinifex Brewery. Once finished here, head back to camp to get our washing off the line, folded and put away. Relax around camp, I make a booking for us to go out to the Sun Pictures Outdoor movie theatre - movie we're seeing "Thelma" cost $44 for the 2 of us. We have a very light tea (still full from our days eating!) - cold roast meat followed by fresh fruit salad. Get ready and head off for our movie that starts at 8.15pm. Enjoy the movie, come 'home', bedtime.
Thursday morning - last yoga class with Simone at 7.30am, she's finishing her season here in Broome and about to head to India next with her yoga classes. Roger doesn't attend this morning, so off I go anyway - another good 'workout' for body and soul.
Next is breakfast - my usual porridge mix and cup of tea. Now I get busy on looking up about a Horizontal Falls day tour that I read about last night in bed, from Broome Visitor information booklet. Wow- there is one tour left for the season and it's tomorrow and appears to have availability.......This sends me into overdrive as we already have a couple of other tours booked for tomorrow.....if we can reschedule them....? After some phonecalls - getting no responses, just messages saying book online or 'send in an email' etc Roger and I figure we'll drive to the Tourist Centre and see if they can help sort us out....they do. Yippee, we're now doing a Horizontal Falls tour tomorrow, so excited - will be an early start though. Head back to our caravan, spend the rest of the morning tidying up and then relaxing happily. Roger alternates between reading and going to the pool. He has lunch, a meat and salad sandwich followed by fresh fruit. I'm holding off on eating until we go out this afternoon - we're going to try some oysters. We get organised to go out for the afternoon - this includes us having our bathers. Off we go at around 2pm.
When we get back it's about 5pm. Time for a swim in the pool for both of us (it closes at 5.30pm every day) before I have a shower while Roger prepares tea - BBQ marinated steaks with salad and airfryer chips (home-made by Rog). I do dessert - thermomix custard served over fresh bananas. Rog washes dishes, then has his shower. I dry dishes and tidy up. We'll have an early night (earlier than usual early lol) to be ready for our 5am tour pick up.
Well we're up at 4.30am this Friday morning to be ready for our tour pick up. No need to worry about breakfast - that's provided by the tour once we are on the Ohana - the charter boat. We catch our tour bus with 2 other couples from our caravan park.
We are returned from our tour by the same bus at around 7.30pm. Roger heads straight for a shower, I get ready for bed. Earliest night to bed for me in ages. Sure we're asleep before 8.30pm! It's been a great day out.
Saturday sees us up around 6.30am. Roger has his breakfast, but I decide to 'hold out' to have my breakfast at the Broome Market that we're checking out this morning - it starts at 8am. We drive into Broome to the Market. It's a good one. After we finish at the Market we drive to the shopping area and go to the Red Cross shop to drop off some of our reading books and buy (cheaply) a couple more. Next we go to Coles and get a few groceries, before driving back to our caravan. Now have a tidy up then go for a swim in the pool, Roger has got to the pool earlier and is happy reading his book on a lounger in the shade of an umbrella. We relax at the pool until we go back to our caravan for lunch. Roger decides to go back into Broome to get some beer (can't purchase alcohol until after 12noon) and some more grocery items (avocado and mushrooms) so we can have bacon and eggs tomorrow morning. I have my shower while he does this - then we have lunch together when he gets back. Sandwich for Roger, open toasties for me. Now just get ourselves organised to be ready for our bus pick up for today's tour we've got booked. It's a cruise in Roebuck Bay to spot for Snubfin dolphins and other marine species and birds. Goes for 3hrs on the water, including watching sunset. We then relax and wait for our collection time of 2.15pm at the front entrance of this caravan park.
When we get delivered back it is around 6.30pm. Roger and I can't be bothered with tea, after the lovely food we've eaten on our tour - so we just have snacks instead. Cabana, dip, cheese and biccies. Shower for Roger, then he's off to bed (reads a while). I stay up abit later - do some of my budget books to get up to date and write up this. Will sleep well tonight I think! We've got another tour booked for tomorrow morning.
Sunday morning we're up nice and early as Roger is going to cook up our bacon and eggs feast - toast, avocado, tomato, cooked mushrooms, bacon, eggs and goat cheese - YUM! Then we tidy up and get ready to head off for our tour this morning - kayaking looking for marine and bird life. We're driving to the Broome Visitor Centre to be collected at 8.30am for the tour. When the tour finishes we are returned to the ute at the Visitor Centre and we head back to our caravan park for a swim in the pool, before I go have a shower. Then get ready to drive to Moontide Distillery. When we return from here we just have a relaxing remainder of the afternoon. Then get organised to drive into Broome to go to the movies again - abit earlier tonight, starts at 6.15pm. When we get 'home' we can't be bothered with preparing tea - think Rog has some weetbix and goes for his shower, and I just have some fruit salad. I catch up my budgeting books before bedtime.
Monday morning up around 7.30am, we both have porridge for breakfast. Tidy up and relax until it's time we can go do some grocery shopping. Roger drives us to the shopping centre that has Woolworths, so we do our shop, then have a wander about the plaza for a look. As Roger's got our 'cold stuff' taken care of in the Engel and eski we decide to go for a drive about Broome and check out some places we haven't yet done. After this we go back to our caravan park, unload our grocery shopping and make up sandwiches for our lunch. Roger goes for a swim, I muck about on our laptop - sorting my emails and thinking about dates to go to Canada next year. Afternoon slips by, Roger prepares tea, he crumbs Ronnie's Barramundi and pan frys it, serving it up with a garden salad and airfryer potato chips. Delicious meal. Tidy up, and relax before bed.
Tuesday - clothes washing day! Have breakfast and get 2 loads of washing happening. Once it's all on the line drying - swim time. Lunch, sandwiches, then more relaxing and swims. I have a shower before we drive to Cable Beach to watch the sunset. We chose to go to the Surf Life Saving Club again - beaut spot to watch sunset. After this we go for a nice walk along the beach in the dusk, beautiful evening, then walk up in the street area with lights to finish off. Back at camp, I cook up tea in the Thermomix Asparagus Risotto and we follow this with Apple Crumble that Roger prepared this afternoon and has now cooked up in the airfryer. Roger goes for his shower, I do the dishes. Now time to catch up on writing this up before bed. A bit sad that we're leaving here tomorrow - but it's time to go look about again which is exciting.
